Should I buy Aperture?

hi all
very simply question from a newbie
i've been a pro photographer for many years now
i went digital about 5 years ago and never looked back
i've mainly edited my work in photoshop and am contemplating purchasing aperture but would like to know what its pros and cons are
what makes it so different to other image editing packages?
is it designed to edit photos or more to organise them?
i'm not in the habit of taking umpteen shots of the same thing and comparing them - i don't believe in this practise, i think you take one photo and make it a **** good photo (that's just my 2 cents)
any and all comments welcome
cheers, S
ps. my main camera is an olympus evolt, if that helps
Mac Pro 17in, 2.16, 2Gb, 100Gb 7200rpm, BT, AP   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

i find that Aperture is an excellent complementary tool to PhotoShop. though increasingly, i find that i'm not going to PS much anymore with the exception of some real fine blemish/hair removal work in my portraits just prior to printing. many people claim that PS is required for final sharpening, but i find that a properly focused image from my D200 rarely needs much additional sharpening!
Aperture brings a speed of processing and organizing that i just couldn't accomplish with PS CS (version 1). i work on a per-project basis, so being able to organize everything into projects with all the smart albums and web galleries to gather the best ranked shots, and book layouts in one place makes it easy to archive using the Export Project right within the application. the Export Project feature is excellent for taking your work on the road too. i will typically export a project on my desktop, import it on my laptop and then i can work on the road or take to a client site for review. PS doesn't really offer this kind of one-click ease of working with an entire project or shoot.
also, with some clever Automator work, you can easily do tethered shooting in the studio:

this is a fantastic workflow for still life and product photography!
in all the app has had some shortcomings, but they're being addressed and i am quite certain that apple will continue to mature the application. good luck!

  • Should I buy Aperture in July 2014 even though it's EOLing?

I appreciate this may seem a bit like asking 'should I buy a house when the government has just announced the new freeway is going to run through the back garden', but…..
I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist with a bit iPhoto library and some Photoshop knowledge.  I was planning to buy Aperture when Apple next updated it because I liked the idea of being able to do more sophisticated Photoshop-esque tweaking of levels, curves, filters etc whilst still only having one unified photo library for iPhoto and Aperture.  It's important in my household to have photos accessible in iPhoto too.
But then Apple announces that instead of updating Aperture, it's ceasing development.  So now I'm torn.
So should I buy Aperture now - seems like there will be one more update for Yosemite - because it will still do what I want it to do?  Or should I adopt Lightroom on the grounds that at some point in the future, as with FCP 6, later versions of OS X will stop supporting old apps like Aperture and I'll be forced to switch to Lightroom or find another solution anyway.
Better to do this now than before I learn the new app and have a ton of images with changes that won't cross over.
    Thanks for any advice/insight.
    Andy

Have a look at Capture One Pro as well - IMO it is the most Aperture like tool out there, it doesn't have as big a feature set as Aperture, but what it does have is very good quality some of it better than Aperture. There is a free trial avaialble, and its on for half price right now.
There are a number of comparisons recommending  the quality ofCapture One's raw convertor; I personally like it much better than Aperture's raw convertor (admittedly only checked with my own Panasonic raw files). I also like its gradient brush, the ability to copy masks between edits (and invert them), and the ability to assign multiple edit functions to the same mask. (I miss the ability to control levels, curves, highlight and shadow modification with a brush or mask)
After a week of evaluation I purchased a copy - I'm tired of waiting for feature upgrades, and don't like using a market trailing raw convertor on every image. I have a choice (not made yet) of doing some of my work, mostly organization and sorting, in Aperture, and RAW conversion in Capture One, or of making a clean break and doing everything from here on in Capture One.
But one thing is clear - I'll have to wait an uncertainly long time (but at least 6 months) before I get new or improved editing features or an improved RAW convertor for Aperture replacement (and then I'll be faced with an undefined cost to transition my images from Aperture to Photos), whereas companies like Capture One, DxO and Adobe can provide those improvements today, and are continuously providing more improvements to customers.
IMOthose other companies will see their revenues and R&D budget pickup as they acquire new users from the Aperture diaspora.

  • Why should I buy Aperture in 2014?

    Hi there,
I have recently made the transition to Apple from PC (which I'm very happy about!) and have been looking to purchase photo editing software to start editing some of my recent photos. I would class myself as a serious enthusiast and have some previous experience of photo editing, so iPhoto or similar will not be enough for what I am looking to do, but the full Photoshop suite of tools would be wasted on me.
Which has led me into the Lightroom vs Aperture debate. To be honest I was all set to give Aperture a go based upon the cost and because I like the way iPhoto structures files (I'm told Aperture will be very similar In this regard?). And then I read that Aperture will no longer be supported.
I'm still tempted to give Aperture a go on the basis that I'm not planning on upgrading my camera anytime soon (D300) and that I would be happy enough if I got a couple of years out of it to let me see what the Apple replacement for Aperture is like. And also because I don't see the need to subscribe to the Creative Cloud if it's only Lightroom I'm after. And because on testing Lightroom recently there were issues with importing NEF files (I hope Aperture does this easily?).
Is this a daft thing to do? Should I not be touching Aperture with a barge pole if it isn't going to be supported? Or is it the case that if it works for me now then it will still work in the same way in a couple of years time?
Also, if I purchase Aperture now, does anyone know if I will be able to migrate across easily to the new editing software that Apple is releasing?
Have I missed anything? This is my first post and any help or advice would be gratefully received!
    Thanks,
    Andy

Aperture is no longer in active development, which is a far cry from saying it won't be supported. It will run on the new OS when it is released - Apple have promised that - so it'll be good for another 18 months minimum. That said, it's $70 for an app that is at the end of its development life.
Lightroom is a very capable application, but twice the price to buy, and even if you go the rental route, the 18 months will cost you $180 compared to Aperture's $70. One thing that LR misses is the integration with the OS offered by iPhoto and Aperture.
There is another way to go. That is to use iPhoto (Free) and an external editor for those things that iPhoto won't do for you. Spend some of the $$$ on an app like Photoshop Elements, Acorn or Pixelmator and set it as an external editor. That way, when the new Photos app comes along you won't be chucking that $70 away, but rather still have a capable editor to use along side it.

  • What is the difference between regular Aperture software and the app? If I were to buy an app or a software as a hobbyist, what should I buy??? Little confused between the two...Please advise.

    Dear All,
I am a newbie to MAC world. Being an ex-PC guy, I am used to CDs and traditional software. I want to buy Aperture as my main photo editing software. I have been using DXO and Photoshop in the past. I downloaded Apeture trial version and I am comfortable with it. If I were to buy it, should I buy an app or traditional software CD. I edit approx. 4-5 pictures a day, just for personal use though. Please advise.
    Regards,
    Gurpreet.

That's a function of your Credit Card not of the Software
But you're right, I was vague. Whether you buy from the App Store or the Disk makes no difference to the functionality of the software. It's the same.

  • I have been considering buying Aperture 3 but the numerous, negative reviews are making me wary.  Should I buy the first version - Aperture 2.1.1 instead?

I have been considering buying Aperture 3 but the numerous, negative reviews are making me wary.  Should I buy the first version - Aperture 2.1.1 instead?
I have a 2009 MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard.  I do not think I will upgrade to Lion because I was warned that it may conflict with some of my applications.
There have been so many reviews that talk about how Aperture 3 is so slow and spends too much time searching for Faces and eventually crashes.  And, many reviews mention that you need to add to your RAM which I can't do right now, especially on a 3 year old computer.
There are some copies Aperture 2 on Amazon.  Would that be a good place to buy a copy or a used copy?
I would appreciate some good advice.  Thanks, Taf Schaefer

Obviously you haven't read the reviews of Aperture 2
FWIW I use Ap3 on both a 2010 MBP (8 gigs of Ram) and an 2008 iMac (4 gigs) and I have no crashing issues whatever. Remember, you can disable Faces if you don't want to use that feature.
    Elv07 wrote:
I used to use iPhoto and I will probably revert to that (although it has fewer function like no RAW import etc.)
Just an FYI: iPhoto supports exactly the same Raws as Aperture.

  • What are some things i need to know before buying Aperture 3? because i know a little about digital photography

    Help please

Your Mac seems to be compatible with Aperture (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1657), but is your camera? Here is a list of cameras, that are supported by Aperture, see: Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
If your camera is not on the list, you can work in Aperture with jpegs, tiffs, psd images, but not with raw images.
because i know a little about digital photography
That is a bit ambigious - do you want to say that you have some experience with digital photography, or nearly none at all?  Have you tried iPhoto and do you like it? iPhoto comes on every newer mac included for free, so you could give it a try. Aperture and iPhoto are related, they are both supporting a lossless workflow - you can always undo all edits and your original images are preserved, and both are compatible. Each application can open the photl library of the other app.
Only Aperture has advanced editing tools and more possibilites to organize and search your images.
To elaborate on Kirby's question: To help you decide, it would help to know, if you have used any software for organizing a photo library previously, and and what you are looking for. If not, give iPhoto a trial run - it should be on your Mac. If you see, that you need more advanced features than the basic set in iPhoto, check, if Aperture will give you those and then buy Aperture. You can continue right where you left off in iPhoto.

  • How to buy aperture when having a test version installed

i´d like to buy aperture in the appstore but after pressing the "buy" button there´s a message telling me that aperture is already installed and i should try to search for updates via the built in software update feature in mac os. Yes, i´ve got the test-version installed, but how do i go on now? Thanks...

Delete the Aperture app from the Applications folder. Then you'll be able to buy it from the App store.
Any libraries you have will work (after upgrading them) with the paid app.

  • Buy Aperture or Photoshop??

    Hi all,
I am about to purchase a new maxed out iMac along with an Adobe Creative CS 3.3 (w/my academic discount), as well as a few other things I need to update my software for the Intel processor.
My question is this: I worked w/Photoshop and Illustrator for years, professionally and for my personal projects.
I also plan on purchasing a new digital SLR (undecided on brand, but probably the latest Canon Rebel version.
I am NOT a professional photographer, but have taken tons of photos w/my old Canon G2 (not to mention my old trusty film SLR that I had forever...) I guess I'd rate myself as a fairly knowledgeable amateur photographer, and w/a good sense of composition from my art and design background...
Point is this: having worked in graphics (my life career). I've done tons of photo & color correction, used layers, filters, curves, etc., etc., etc., in Photoshop, and am comfortable with it. Yet, I use iPhoto quite a lot for it's ease of organization and quick fixes for little projects.
How does Aperture compare to Photoshop? Are they at all comparable? I will most likely buy the CS suite, as I can hardly pass up the savings, esp since it is bundled with Illustrator, etc., so here is the question:
Should I buy both Adobe CS AND Aperture???
    I appreciate any/all suggestions!
    Thanks-

Aperture and Photoshop aren't really the same thing.
Aperture is more of a DAM program with a great ability to adjust photos. It's really the only thing that I use 99% of the time.
But then again, I don't edit my photos with layers/masks etc. Which is where Photoshop excels and where I need to dabble in that 1%.
But that's me. I have both and try to use the right tool for the job.
Just one word or caution don't buy Aperture on the Education discount, it's not eligible for an upgrade. So when you're done with school you'll have to pay the full price anyway. If I bought the full version when I was in school I would have saved money in the long run.

  • Buy Aperture 3 or wait for Aperture 4?

I'm looking to buy Aperture, but rumor has it version 4 is on the way. Should I buy version 3 now and hope 4 is a ways away or wait it out?
How likely is it if I buy version 3 now, apple will let me upgrade to 4 for free? I know there's no upcoming apple events (that have been annouced anyway), but is it possible they will just push it out without an event?

No one here can answer your question. We are users just like yourself so we know nothing about what when Apple will release anything.

  • Buy Aperture at the moment?

    Hello
i'm new on OS X and searching for some great photo software. i heard about the actual aperture situation. should i buy it at the moment or should i wait 'till the "new" photos app is presented?
    thx for your informations......

Aperture is a waste of money at this point. It is only barely cheaper than many competitors (especially since many are running sales now) for a product that is going nowhere but the grave. And obviously some of us disagree about it's ease of use and integration with other software you may use. Maybe Photos will be better; we don't know when it's gonna show up or what it will be beyond a brief preview, so if you need something and can't wait, try others.
It's a matter of personal preferences, what you need, and how you like your images to look. But even before Apple axed Aperture it had gone a very very long time without anything but minor upgrades. Meanwhile, the competitors have been improving.
Also, you can't try Aperture. But you can try demos of all the competing products. Some favorites besides Lightroom/Photoshop (pretty much the professional standard right now is, and has been, Photoshop) are Capture One Pro (now supporting external editing with software like the Nik/Google products, Photo Mechanic (a favorite for news and sports photographers), DarkTable and Lightzone (open source alternatives), Corel AfterShot Pro, and others. Some like DxO OpticsPro use photo browsers instead of the digital asset management scheme of Aperture and Lightroom, and some prefer that model. DxO excels in RAW processing, as does Capture One, if RAW is important to you. Others are more Photoshop alternatives for image retouching and manipulation, like Pixelmator, Photoshop Elements, Acorn, GIMP, and others. Another worth looking at (again, we don't know your needs) is Graphic Converter, which has a browser, and editor, and great tools for metadata editing.

  • Which OS and software should I buy to  merge photos

I read several discussions regarding to the merge/combine iPhoto library but still not sure the right step to do because my computer and software is quite outdated  I have
    1.  IMAC Processor  3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo OS X Lion 10.7.5 iPhoto 7.1.5 with  20,000+ photos and 2000 + movies. and
    2. Macbook air  1.3 GHz Intel Corei5 OS X 10.9.5  iphoto 9.4.3with 7,000+photos
i would like to merge the photos from Macbookair to IMAC and update iphoto in IMAC to the version that can play vdo (currently i have to see vdo from i movie). some pictures are the same in both computers,
    please help recommend
1 do I have to update my operating system first which OS do you recommend
    2. what software should I buy i.e. aperture, iphoto library manager( i saw this name from one of the discussion).
it would be nice if you could advise a step by step to me as Im not good at computer
Thank you very much in advance

If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($30) version of iPhoto Library Manager
As a: Aperture is more expensive and b: it's no longer developed, Library Manager is a better buy for your usage.
I would ask on the iMac forum about the best OS for that machine. Once you know that you'll be able to choose a version of iPhoto appropriate.

  • Can't buy aperture

I had  trial version of Aperture.  It expired.  Now I am trying to buy, but I am caught in endless loop:
fromApp store, buy:  "Aperture is already installed on this computer, Choose Software Update..."
    Software update: no updates

Move your trial version of Aperture from the Applications Folder to the Trash, but keep your Aperture Library in the Pictures folder. Then you should be able to buy Aperture by signing into the App Store.
    Regards
    Léonie

  • This maybe a dumb question but...If I buy Aperture are the updates already installed into the purchased version or do I need to update them?

This maybe a dumb question but...If I buy Aperture are the updates already installed into the purchased version or do I need to update them after the prograam is installed?

Should come updated from the Mac App Store. Obviously, it's tough to keep things up to date when they are sitting in a box on a store shelf.

  • It seems that my Office 2008 is incompatible with the Yosemite OS that my friend just installed on my iMac. My Word no longer works. Also, I can't access messages on Entourage. What version of Office should I buy?

My friend installed OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on my iMac. Since then, I can barely use my Miocrsoft Word 2008.  The spinning pinwheel, things freezing up, template and formatting trouble, and I can't get any Entourage messages more than a year old, which is a disaster.  I read that Yosemite won't support Word 2008. What Microsoft Update should I buy, and will that fix my problems?  I am desperate. Thank you in advance for your help.  Here is the result I got from EtreCheck. Remove Office 2008 for Mac using Microsoft deinstall procedure. Reinstall Office 2008 for Mac.  If there are updates, apply them. Using Disk Utility, verify/repair permissions on your boot drive.
