Should i buy modem separately after buying airport express?

Should i buy modem separately after buying airport express?

It depends entirely upon the way you wish to connect to the Internet.
First of all, an AirPort Express does not contain a modem.
If you have access to the Internet through a direct LAN (Ethernet) connection, no separate modem is needed.
If the Internet connection is through DSL (ADSL), your Internet service provider should supply a DSL modem (this modem may be combined with a router/switch). Ensure that the modem has an Ethernet port if you want to use it with an AirPort Express base station.
For a cable (TV) Internet connection, the Internet service provider would supply a modem. Make sure that this modem has an Ethernet port if you wish to use an AirPort Express as a base station.
For mobile broadband (3G or 4G) there are different solutions, such as a USB mobile broadband modem or a mobile broadband hotspot. A USB mobile broadband modem stick is for direct use with a computer (often with special software) and cannot be connected to the USB port of an AirPort Express. A mobile broadband hotspot converts the mobile broadband to local Wi-Fi, which can be received by a computer having Wi-Fi capabilities. In principle, an AirPort Express (n) could be configured to connect to a hotspot as well.
Please post back with details about the intended setup, Internet service type, et cetera if you need additional information.

A Time Capsule is an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive to allow your Mac(s) to back up automatically, so it's a logical choice if you need a wireless router and back up capabilities for your Macs
The AIrPort Extreme has a bit better antenna arrangement than an AirPort Express, so it would be a good choice for a two level house.
Depending on the location of the "main" wireless router, you may find that you still need to add an extender or two in other parts of the house for full, fast wireless coverage. The AirPort Express is a good choice for this duty.
To compare the 3 Apple devices, see this Apple support document:

i want to buy airport express for my ipad and iphone, but i need to know if my sony smart tv and my sister's phone can connect with it?

It would be difficult to guarentee that all wireless devices can connect to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), so at best, your Sony Smart TV and your sister's phone SHOULD be able to connect ... as the AX is basically no different than any other manufacturers wireless router.

  • Advised to get an "extender" to be able to stream netflix, etc. through new digital tv.  Apple store told me to buy Airport Express and set up WDS.  Upon reading about WDS it stated cannot set up WDS with Airport Express 802.11n,

  • Is to good to buy Airport express

    Hi ,
I am a student just graduated , now i am moving to a new place, is it good to buy airport express or to buy time capsule, i think i hardly need back up?
    so what do you suggest?

I have to ask. Why do you think you don't need a backup? It really depends on your needs on which to buy. For the price difference I would buy Time Capsule as you get the wireless hard drive and a base station too.

  • I can use a modem 3G in the AirPort express, put it in gate USB of the equipamentos?

I can use a modem 3G in the AirPort express, put it in gate USB of the equipamentos?

No. The USB port on the AirPort Express is designed to be used only for a USB printer.

  • Which to buy airport express or extreme

I want to go wireless for my mac mini as well as use it to stream videos to my TV, use it for wireless printing and with my two iphones. Security is #1 however speed to almost of equal importance. I have my internet connection thru my cable company and would buy an apple TV for streaming video to my TV. In addition to buying and streaming video I would also use the TV to show my slideshows and video. What hookup would be best?

Unless you have an additional networking requirement to support wired clients, then the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) should be able to support all of your stated requirements.
Both base stations provide the same security levels and both allow for streaming. However, the Extreme does have the feature to operate on both the 2.4 and 5 GHz radio bands simultaneously, whereas the Express can only operate on one or the other at a time. The Extreme also support sharing USB HDDs and/or USB printers attached to its USB port, whereas the Express only supports a single USB printer.
Also, the Express, like the Apple TV, can be used as iTunes speakers, whereas the Extreme cannot.
The best hookup for the TV would be HMDI.

  • I'm considering buying airport express

    Hi guys/gals,
I'm considering buying an airport express but have a few questions, I'd be grateful if anyone could help!
Current situation is I have one of the new iMacs in my house currently not near a telephone socket at wall (hence my need to go wireless). I also have an iPod Hifi situated elsewhere in the house which I would like to be able to stream music to from my iMac. (The iPod Hifi just happens to be beside a telephone socket at the wall - if this is of any benefit??)
My main concern is - does the airport express need another wireless router to access its signal or can it actually act as a router itself? if so, how do i connect to my internet connection?
Am i correct in thinking I should plug the airport express in beside the hifi so as i can obviously run the audio cable to it and if the airport express does not need another router then I can just connect it to the telephone socket beside the hifi for the internet connection?
I'm sorry if any of this is vague, any help would be appreciated!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Stephen

I am using a Mac Pro with airport extreme card in it (the card was an option)- I suppose iMacs have this card built in as standard. If so go for it. (as to how to install the AE in your case check the manual - it's pretty straight forward)
If you have a good hi-fi system (with a receiver having toslink connection) I strongly suggest you make use of the Airport Express toslink connector (you have to purchase the toslink cable (optical) cca 20 Euro if you do not have one already. The quality is unbelievable (use apple lossless codec for your files).
I do not have a receiver but an external DAC (digital to analogue converter) connected to AE with the toslink cable. The DAC is connected to my hi-fi system by RCA cable.
I just finished transfering my CD collection to an external MyBook 1TB USB 2 HDD (all files in Apple Lossless codec !) and believe me the quality is so good - I will probably never use my Hi-End DENON SACD player again...

  • Buying AirPort express vs another wireless base?

... basically, what the header says. i have an iBook G4 with AirPort pre-installed (if that means anything; i don't know..)
if i get the airport express, i'd have to also buy a router to split my cable connection for my desktop and for the wireless.
if i got a wireless router (for HALF THE PRICE), i'd save myself a bunch of money and cable clutter.
so, is there any special reason to buy the AirPort? besides the wireless printing and music streaming (not worth the 60 bucks to me)

If you don't need wireless printer sharing, or music streaming, then there is no reason to get the Airport Express.
A typical wireless router would most likely be sufficient for you.
I would probably make sure that whatever router you purchase supports WPA wireless security. Many of the newer wireless routers do.

  • Can I Use Time Capsule to Stream iTunes or Do I have to Buy Airport Express?

I have a 2TB Time Capsule and wanted to know if I can use this to setup a multi room sound system with ceiling speakers.  From what I've read I need the Airport Express, but wanted to check with more experienced Apple users.  Thanks!

The Time Capsule does not have any audio capability or ports for audio connections. You need an AirPort Express.

  • Can't Connect Properly to Router After Successful Airport Express Setup

Hello - this is my first time posting here, but I had a weird issue I was hopeful someone could assist with.
Basically, I was having a lot of trouble setting up my Airport Express to join my existing network to steam audio to a set of speakers. After trying a number of permutations and searching on the internet, I found out that when selecting to join my home network I needed to select WEP-40 rather than WEP-128. Once I did this, it worked!
Unfortunately, the only issue now is that my PC laptop (I'm using a Mac desktop)...has trouble connecting to this same router for my home network. I am able to get it to connect, but only when I change the "Network Authentication" in the Settings to "Open" from "Shared" (which it seems to have been at previously when I could connect before Airport setup. When I do this though, the Wireless Network Connection area says that it's "Not Connected", but it is connected. Now, this laptop can connect to all other networks no problem, as well as other devices can connect to my network fine. I would be able to deal with this minor annoyance, but it does seem that the network will drop from time to time now, where it didn't before.
Very appreciated if you made this far and followed along - I'd really like some help with this issue. I am very, very confident it is directly correlated to the set up with the Airport Express, as this became an issue immediately following getting it connected.
    Thanks!!
    David

Welcome to the discussion area, dgbruce!
Your post did not indicate whether you had performed a full power cycle on your network. You should always do this whenever you make any changes on your network. If you have not already done this, follow this procedure:
Power everything...all devices...down, order is not important.
Wait a moment, then start the modem and let it run a moment or two by itself.
Then, start the next device connected to the modem the same way.
Keep starting devices until you have everything powered back up.
    What are your results?
If no help, can you tell us if you made any changes to your main router? If no, power down the AirPort Express only. You are now back to your original condition. Can the PC connect now?
If no, then the connection issue is between your wireless router and the PC (because the AirPort Express is not even on the network)
If yes, and the PC connects correctly now, power the Express back up and watch for any changes. What are the results?

  • DSL Modem to Router to Airport Express ??

I am trying to setup a network at home. I recently bought a D-Link DI-604 wired router to plug into my DSL modem so I could connect my eMac with an ethernet cable and my MacBook Pro with Airport Express. I have it setup so the DSL modem is connected to the D-Link router and then their are two cables running from the router. One is going to the emac directly and the other is going to the Airport express.
If I don't use the router then I have no problems surfing the net with the DSL modem to Airport Express on my MacBook Pro. The problem I'm having is when I split the connection with the D-Link router. After running the connection wizard built into the router, I can surf the net on both computers temporarily but when I turn both computers off and then back on again a few hours later I've lost the net connection and I have to reboot the router and run the wizard again.
I didn't do much research before I set this up because I assumed it wouldn't be a problem. However, now I'm beginning to suspect that connecting a router (DLink) to another router (Airport Express) might be the problem.
If anyone can address this issue I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

    Hey there Other Tim,
    Welcome to the forums!
I'd recommend setting up the D-Link router with only the eMac connected. Once it's up and running, join the Airport express to it. I would recommend resetting the AEX:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
Once you've got it going, go into Airport admin in the Utilities folder, click configure, and disable "Distribute IP addresses" under the Network tab.
I'm pretty sure that will work.

I am trying to decide what the best ISP to go with for my new airport extreme. I have Comcast currently and they are terrible(and they are totally less than helpful with setting it up)...are there any other ISP's in particular that work really well with airport extremes?
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Generally someone only has the choice of one or two broadband ISPs. If service from Comcast is reliable, I'd go with them if they can supply you with a "dumb" (i.e., no router functionality) modem. That should make setup of an AirPort Extreme very simple.
Reliability is the most important thing. In theory you only need configure things once, but you're dependent on reliability every day.
By the way, is there a reason you posted your message in the section for "AirPort for Windows"?

  • Is double use of  ip adress after installation airport express a problem?

Just installed my airport express through my ipad.
Everything works fine, but i did actively ignore the analised problem of using the ipadress double.
Should i fix this? And why?
I allready found on the web how to fix it, but since all is working, not sure if i should take the risk of messing things up.
    Looking forward to get advise!

    Hi,
The dswsbobje web application (war file) is mentioned in SAP IK XI 3.1 install guide to explain how to get the SAP authentication option available in Business Objects products such as Live Office, which use web services to log on to BusinessObjects Enterprise.
The source files for various Business Objects web applications are available in "businessobjects_root\BusinessObjects Enterprise 12.0\java\applications\" folder. Refer to "Deploying the web applications using wdeploy" section in SAP IK XI 3.1 install guide to see how to repackage those web apps and deploy them using wdeploy tool.

  • TimeCapsule has disappeared after installing AirPort Express

I installed an Airport Express (bridged) over ethernet to my existing Time Capsule.
Now In the Airport Utility I can no longer see my TimeCapsule.  In the Time Machine utility  I see the TimeCapsule after I press "Select Disk" but it times out and I receive msg "OSStatus Error 2".
Internet connection through the TimeCapsule still works fine.

jlybly, Welcome to the discussion area!
Assuming you have an iBook G4, your problem is different. The iBook G4 is ONLY compatible with the AirPort Extreme card.
If, by chance, you actually have an iBook G3 then you need the original 802.11b AirPort card. The iBook G3 is ONLY compatible with the older AirPort card.
