Should I Buy one now?

I am a lifetime Windows user, and I hate it. I have wanted to get a Mac for a long time now, and when they teamed with Intel, it seemed perfect. When this new Macbook came out that was in my price range, I did a little research. I noticed that the new OS Leopard is comming out in late '06. I have read about the boot camp thing for that and would be intrested in that because I do use alot of Windows programs and it woudld be very nice to be able to run it when I needed. Would it be smart to buy the MacBook now and upgrade the OS when it is releaced, or should I just wait untill a new computer is releaced with it already on there, or will it even matter at all? Thanks

John,
First of all, welcome to the Mac community/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png You have taken your first step/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png I was in your shoes last April myself/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png Before that, I had turned my PC in "looking" like a mac and all the fun stuff, and yet I was still drooling over the beauty of the original macs. Switching to Apple was DEFINITELY the right choice for me/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png I love it/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png And while I still respect the choices of people who don't want to try Apple products, I think they are missing out/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png
Now, as per your question of whether to buy it now or not, I see your dilemma and also of Masna's claim that "you will never buy a computer then" if you keep waiting. Its compelling to wait for the "right" moment. Actually, I am (once again) in your shoes because I just sold my iBook and am also looking to buy a MacBook soon. But I am hoping/planning to control my emotions for another month or two.
I am holding off because Fall is coming, which means GOOD DEALS/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png August and September are the times when schools open, and so the tech stores have all nice little offers going on/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png For instance, I bought a Mac Mini last september, and here is what I got:
1) Mac Mini (retail value)
2) LCD Monitor ($30 off)
3) Microsoft Office: Student (FREE after rebate)
4) Apple Bluetooth Mouse (FREE after rebate)
5) Apple Bluetooth Keyboard (FREE after rebate)
6) Epson Printer (FREE after rebate)
That was really a sweet deal/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png I know deals like that don't come everyday, but I am guessing you can AT LEAST get a FREE printer :o)
At the end, it all depends on your situation. If you can hold off, I would recommend holding it out for at least August or even September. If you can't hold off that long, then just get one tomorrow/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png You won't regret it either way :-D
Good Luck/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png And welcome once again/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png :o)

  • Should I wait to buy an iPhone or buy one now?

First off, I know for a fact that I am going to get an iPhone, but I just can't decide if I want to buy one now or wait for iPhone 2.0. The main reason for my hesitancy is the lack of 3G. All of iPhone's other missing features don't really concern me because they can be fixed through software updates. If Apple is going to release a 3G iPhone within the next 6 months or so then I might want to wait, but if it's going to be a year or more, then I'll probably just buy one now and suck it up with EDGE. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas to when Apple might be planning to release a 3G iPhone? Any ideas that would help me make this decision would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Maybe you should get yer wife a V2 and keep the V1.
Are you saying he should get a new wife just to upgrade his iPhone? Or get a new wife for his existing wife? Depending on how much he likes his current wife, it may be simpler (and cheaper, frankly), simply to upgrade the phone and not the wife.

  • What OS would a new Macbook Air come with if I buy one now?

    Hi there,
I am thinking of buying an MBA. Some preliminary research suggests negative reviews about the latest OS Yosemite. Regardless of whether such reviews are accurate or not, I wonder what OS will a new MBA come with, if I buy one now (or over the next few weeks)?
    Thanks.

You can try, but probably not. Note that, since no new model of MacBook Air has come out since the release of Yosemite, even if it ships with Yosemite, it should be capable of running Mavericks. Mavericks is no longer available in the App Store, but you can contact the App Store support http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact/ and ask for a download code. If you've previously downloaded it on another Mac, it should be in the purchases section in the App Store.

  • Lots of Negative things about Ibook..should I buy one?

I have read a lot of problems with the ibook here and was wondering if I should buy one. I am ready to buy this week and this forum has planted some doubt. Are these common problems for Apple? I thought Apple was supposed to be very trouble free.. Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It is the nature of these Discussions that what you are going to see here are problems, problems, and more problems.
If people are happily iBooking away, getting work done, playing games, listening to music on iTunes, buying music from the iTunes music store, using their iBooks to load their iPods, downloading photos from their digital cameras, and buying books from Amazon.com, they are too busy to come here and say, "Hey, my iBook's working great!"
Many, many people are doing just that, with no problems whatsoever.
In this particular forum, some of the iBooks are over four years old. Some have had a lot of problems over the years; some have chugged right along and are just showing signs of their age now. Many more are still chugging right along, and their owners are oblivious to these Discussions and to the problems others have had or are having.
If you are thinking of buying a new iBook, I would not hesitate in recommending one to you. I would be more cautious with buying used because, like buying a new car, there is a chance you are buying someone else's problems.
Even so, I have bought three used iBooks. They have not been totally problem free, but I have been extremely happy with them, nonetheless. If you can find a businessman who replaces his iBook every year (my first iBook) or a new Ph. D. whose new employer provided him with a new Windows laptop (my second iBook), a used one can work out nicely. I have had my second one for almost two years, now, and I am looking at those new G4's with lustful eyes.
If you are buying a new one, I would recommend buying AppleCare. Maybe that recommendation comes from all the time I spend here helping people with problems. I'd rather buy AppleCare and never need it than need it and regret not having bought it.
If you're buying used, AppleCare transfers, so you can try to get one that has it. Or if it is less than a year old, you will have the option to purchase AppleCare on it for yourself, even if it doesn't already have it.
Don't let these Discussion boards put you off buying an iBook. The fact that they exist is just one more reason to buy one.
    Good luck.

  • Hey, I want to buy a macbook pro or imac mini, I want to know which is better and why, is their going to be new macbooks ect released in 2-3 months thats better that i should rather wait for? Or buy one now ?

Please help me i dont know which one to buy, and ive never owned one before but i have used my friends quite alot. Why is macbook's worth buying if you can get many products for the same price with better specs ?What makes it unique that it dominates basically the whole world.

    Hey,
Thank's 4 the advice , but one of my main problems is I live in South Africa and apple products is x2 as much as what the usa doller is for it. Eg Macbook pro starting price $1199 american dollars and directley converted to South African currency is R9160.30.... but the problem is if i want to buy it in my country it has been marked up alot and a Macbook pro starting price for me will be R13000 for 13 inch and if you directley convert our price into american dollers its $1704.30 american dollars, so thats +600 dollers more.
So its much more expensive to buy products in my country and thats just the starting price.
I want mobality but i was also thinking (imac mini) is kinda portable and can plug into any1  T.V u know.
So like i really do t know what to get and that, because its alot more money to spend than the US dollar.
So i really want you to put your self in my position you know...
And what is classified as a good monitor???
And i want to know why my friends say that the imac mini is pathetic , but i think it losts longer than most windows laptops, what do you think ??
And can i who lives in south africa buy products directley from apple them selves ??
Thank's man , hope you can help me out here!
Hope other people can c this 2

  • Is 8GB enough storage space? I am buying one now

The store I am buying from only has the 8GB iPhone 3G in stock at this time. The 16GB versions are out of stock.. I was wondering if 8GB is enough space for like games/movies/music and apps? How big are most of the apps anyways? size wise?
And movies? If I download a movie from itunes, what would be the size of it? Thanks I need to know right away so I can go out and get one today.

I have an 8GB and have had it for over a year. I have 7 pages of apps, 350 songs and podcasts and pictures and notes saved on it. I have not even come close to half way! I thought I was going to need the 16GB but now I am glad that I didnt spend the extra $$.
    Enjoy

  • Should i Buy one??

hi everyone first post here, Im looking at a G4 PowerMac i am sure its the Digital audio model, 1.25gb memory, 128Gb HDD, 733 MHz processor. First of all i will be needing it for wireless internet access just normal surfing, maybe some downloading here and there and to store music files. Also i was hoping to maybe be able to record a few things audio wise. Anyway do ya think this would be suitable or should i save a bit and maybe get a more powerfull newer model? Any help would be great. thanks

Despite the name I don't think the DA model comes with audio input. You'll have to use a USB input device or sound card which will add to the cost.
For most normal surfing it will be fine except now people are starting to see jerky video on sites such as YouTube. Those are really requiring a processor capable of handling H264 video.
This model computer cannot recognize more than 128GB of any size hard drive. If you start getting huge mounts of audio you'll want to find room for more. Either use workarounds for larger drives (various hardware and software options, all add a bit to cost, and some work better than others), or put in multiple smaller drives, or use external drives. We can provide details on the various options if you want.

  • Should I buy, one man's retrospective

I bought (4) 8gig iphones on the release date. Didn't wait in line, walked in to the Boise store, bought, went home, ported numbers from Nextel, started using immediately. Old phones were all blackberry, bluetooth, GPS enabled. Have since bought 5th phone and ported it over from Nextel. We have experienced none of the issues that are posted in these discussions, battery seems to charge fine, coverage is good (currently 1 phones is in Maine, 1 in Illinois, i in Oregon, and 2 in Idaho.) Bottom line, phone is expensive to buy, it is 1st generation, so one has to decide, if a $600 purvhase is going to create a financial hardship, don't buy the phone, if not, the phone is cool and does everything Apple said it would.

    I returned mine.
My top reasons for bagging it in no particular order:
    - Speakerphone echo
    - AT&T GSM echo
    - Phone makes my computer speakers buzz at home and work
    - Must delete one email message at a time
    - Battery life is poor if you use WiFi and Bluetooth
    - WiFi connections that are otherwise stable drop frequently
    - Too many taps to place a simple phone call
    - Unlocking phone becomes a hassle after cool factor wears off
I have all sorts of other minor complaints that are highly subjective, and not worth mentioning here. This all being said, it was still difficult to part with this super cool phone. I just use my phone too much to make so many compromises, not to mention all the money I was spending to adopt iPhone - from the phone itself, breaking a T-Mobile contract, and paying about $20 more per month to AT&T for a contract with 600 fewer minutes than I was getting at TMO.

  • Gaming on MacBook pro, should I buy one

    Hi,
My MacBook is now over 5 years old now, and I am thinking about getting a MacBook pro. My MacBook is ok except, I want multitouch gestures and the ability to play games, as my current Mac has intel gma 950 graphics. I am not good with specs, so I was hoping someone could help me verify that these games would work ok on the baseline 13" MacBook pro:
    Dc universe online
    World of Warcraft
    Portal 2
    Champions online
    Sims 3
Tell me if these work with intel hd 3000 graphics please
    Thank you ahead of time
Ps I will be using windows 7 in boot camp

First off i dont know what "shldr2thewheel" is talking about the 15" macbook pro has both onboard and dedicated video, aka Radeon 6750m which is 1 gig gddr5 .... it runs wow on full settings at 60fps-120fps.... also starcraft 2 on ultra!!! that guy has no clue or isnt a gamer, plus you can bootcamp windows for windows based titles such as skyrim and it looks beautifull. imo go for a mac

  • Nokia 301 should I buy one?

Hi I bought a nokia 206 recently but sold it within a few days as the call quality was terrible, my nokia 2610 is much better and thats years old, anyway im thinking of buying a 301 unlocked, but id like to know if the call quality is any good, as the 206 seems similar? And has the battery problem been fixed, any replies welcome im in the uk...

It really depends on what you want out of a phone. If you are looking for something basic or old fashioned then it's a good phone. Personally i'd buy a Lumia 520 instead but do understand that not everyone likes touchscreens.

  • Should I Buy an iPod Touch Now or an iPhone 3G After Waiting a Few Months?

I was thinking about whether I should buy an iPhone3G or an iPod Touch v2, but I couldn't come up with a decision. Here are my arguments:
    For iPod
    1. I can buy one now. Since I live in Canada, iPhone3G will arrive on July 11. However, so many people will want it that I most likely will not get one until a few months. Since my parents only let me go to electronic stores by myself over holidays, I will have to wait until Christmas before I can buy one.
    2. I use my phone about 10min a week. I don't text message either. (Most likely won't get a plan for iPhone until necessary or when the price drops)
    3. It can be argued that I will use my phone more in 2 years when I'm off to university, but by then the iPhone will be old.
    4. People say iPod Touch video graphics aren't that good, but watching videos on small screens tire out my eyes no matter how good the quality is.
    For iPhone
    1. More functions, such as GPS, phone when necessary, speaker, camera, etc
    2. If I wait, the iPhone will be the same price as the iPod Touch as of right now.
    3. I have a sim card phone and if Apple decides to go open network then I can replace my phone with this iPhone.
Please help me make a suggestion,
    Thanks in advance.

Since I live in Canada, iPhone3G will arrive on July 11. However, so many people will want it that I most likely will not get one until a few months.
There will probably be loads available, I doubt you will have to wait at all (except in line).
(Most likely won't get a plan for iPhone until necessary or when the price drops)
If you get an iPhone, you WILL get a plan as it is required at time of purchase.
Minimum 2 year, $40 voice plan required. A data plan will cost an additional $30.
    2. If I wait, the iPhone will be the same price as the iPod Touch as of right now.
As of the 3G iPhone, the actual price of the phone is less than a touch (but requires a 2 year plan).
    3. I have a sim card phone and if Apple decides to go open network then I can replace my phone with this iPhone.
If they do offer the phone without a plan, it will undoubtedly cost $100-$200 more since ATT is subsidizing the price.

  • Should I buy Aperture in July 2014 even though it's EOLing?

I appreciate this may seem a bit like asking 'should I buy a house when the government has just announced the new freeway is going to run through the back garden', but…..
I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist with a bit iPhoto library and some Photoshop knowledge.  I was planning to buy Aperture when Apple next updated it because I liked the idea of being able to do more sophisticated Photoshop-esque tweaking of levels, curves, filters etc whilst still only having one unified photo library for iPhoto and Aperture.  It's important in my household to have photos accessible in iPhoto too.
But then Apple announces that instead of updating Aperture, it's ceasing development.  So now I'm torn.
So should I buy Aperture now - seems like there will be one more update for Yosemite - because it will still do what I want it to do?  Or should I adopt Lightroom on the grounds that at some point in the future, as with FCP 6, later versions of OS X will stop supporting old apps like Aperture and I'll be forced to switch to Lightroom or find another solution anyway.
Better to do this now than before I learn the new app and have a ton of images with changes that won't cross over.
    Thanks for any advice/insight.
    Andy

Have a look at Capture One Pro as well - IMO it is the most Aperture like tool out there, it doesn't have as big a feature set as Aperture, but what it does have is very good quality some of it better than Aperture. There is a free trial avaialble, and its on for half price right now.
There are a number of comparisons recommending  the quality ofCapture One's raw convertor; I personally like it much better than Aperture's raw convertor (admittedly only checked with my own Panasonic raw files). I also like its gradient brush, the ability to copy masks between edits (and invert them), and the ability to assign multiple edit functions to the same mask. (I miss the ability to control levels, curves, highlight and shadow modification with a brush or mask)
After a week of evaluation I purchased a copy - I'm tired of waiting for feature upgrades, and don't like using a market trailing raw convertor on every image. I have a choice (not made yet) of doing some of my work, mostly organization and sorting, in Aperture, and RAW conversion in Capture One, or of making a clean break and doing everything from here on in Capture One.
But one thing is clear - I'll have to wait an uncertainly long time (but at least 6 months) before I get new or improved editing features or an improved RAW convertor for Aperture replacement (and then I'll be faced with an undefined cost to transition my images from Aperture to Photos), whereas companies like Capture One, DxO and Adobe can provide those improvements today, and are continuously providing more improvements to customers.
IMOthose other companies will see their revenues and R&D budget pickup as they acquire new users from the Aperture diaspora.

  • When should i buy a iMac?

I have been wating for a while to buy a iMac. Some sources say it will come out sept. 12, others say october, or even early 2013. i really need one now but should i buy now though? i mean what happens when i buy one now but then the new one comes out in october?

Don't buy anything from Best Buy.
But what about the new model being so close, i just dont want to regret the buy.
No one knows about any new models. Significant upgrade cycles for Macs has historically been on the order of every year or so. There is no guarantee that will continue though.
"so close" is not significant for a computer that will serve you well for several years.
If you decide to buy from Apple they have a 14 day, no questions asked return policy. Should you buy a new Mac and another one comes out during that short period, you can return it for a full refund and buy the latest.
There's nothing wrong with using your existing computer. Replace it when it no longer does what you need it to do. If that happens to be now, you have your answer.

  • When should I buy?

I am thinking about buying a new 13" Macbook Pro this summer. However, I leave to study abroad in August and don't want to bring my new computer abroad (so I won't even be using it from August to December). I'm wondering if I should wait to buy a new computer when I get back in December. I either buy one now, get to use my fun, new computer for 2 months, and get a free iPod touch with the student deal, OR I buy in December, and maybe by then there will be new updates to the Macbook Pro. Should I buy now or wait? Getting it now + free iPod vs. waiting and possibly buying a better/faster computer?

On this discussion board it is against the rules to speculate on when Apple will replace products. There are other sites that will speculate about that - macrumors does that.
It depends what is important to you. How badly do you want to get the free iTouch, and how important is it to you to wait for the next newer model, and how important it is to you to keep your old computer for your study abroad trip? Ultimately, what is most important to you?
There is also insurance available to purchase (Safeware), which might protect you from the laptop being stolen (you would have to check with the different ones and what they have to offer).
Oh well, those are just some things for you to consider in your decision making process.

  • Does anyone know if Apple are planning on releasing a new version of the iPad in 2013? I want to buy one, but would rather wait to get the latest one if they are planning on a release of a newer version later this year.

BEFORE JUST REJECTING MY QUERY, AS A POTENTIALLY NEW CUSTOMER I WOULD APPRECIATE SOME FORM OF AN ANSWER!!
I want to buy an iPad (my first one), but would rather wait a couple of months to get the latest one if they are planning on a release of a newer version later this year. I certainly cannot afford to buy one now and then update when a newer model comes out, especially if it's released only a couple of months from now.

The latest one came out just 4 months ago. Doubt one is coming out soon.
There are always going to be people who are one day out of their return period when a new device comes out, and that's just that. No one can predict. And we are all just users here who would have no idea. But I would get an iPad now given the last one came out four months ago.
