Should I buy the WRT610? What say you Linksys???

I am in the market for a new wireless router and found majority of the reviews out on the web to point me in the direction of the new wrt610n. Here is the problem that I have seen so far. I come to the site here and all I see from WRT610N owners is how many issues they are having with this router. I also see a ZERO lack in response from Linksys in this matter which is very discerning.
Linksys are you there??? How about some info on whats going on with this latest product of yours? Has these issues been looked at or does everyone have to wait for the next release of the product... What does a guy have to do to get a decent wirless N router without heading over to apple (no offense meant to apple people).
So in short why Should I buy this product? Feature set looks great but is that all this router is all looks and nothing else? What say you?

This is a community forum.  As far as I know, the only Linksys employee here is the forum moderator, and he rarely answers questions.
The forum is designed to help people solve their router issues.   So naturally, the vast majority of the threads contain reports of various router problems.  You should also consider that the most popular routers have the most postings, not because they are bad routers, but because many (often inexperienced) users are using those routers.
I would estimate that about 75% of the router problems are actually just "user error", that is, not understanding how to setup your router and network properly.  This category also includes users who insist on trying to push the limits of the router, for example, trying to use a brand new (cutting edge) WRT610N with their Windows 98 computer, using a wireless b adapter with an 8 year old driver.   (In theory, this should work, but in reality, there are often problems.)  Another 15% stem from poor wireless connections caused by such things as overcrowding in the 2.4 GHz band, buildings that have "radio dense"  walls  (i.e. walls that have building materials that are hard to penetrate), and the fact that the wireless n standard is not yet finalized (this causes some incompatibilities).  The last 10% of the threads might truely be problems that Linksys could potentially fix.  Linksys generally gets blamed for far more than the problems they are actually causing.
The good news about Linksys is that they have this forum available (Not all router manufacturers run a forum), and it is widely used, so there is a lot of router info here.     Also, to my eye, Linksys seems to have the best documentation of any brand of router.  The other thing is that, especially with newer routers, Linksys does appear to be actively working to correct firmware flaws, as evidenced by their postings of updated firmware.
As to whether or not the WRT610N is best for you, that really depends on a lot of factors including  (1) what other wireless equipment do you own (is it wireless n, g, or b ? ) ,  (2)  how fast is your Internet connection?   (3) how are you planning to use your wireless n?  game play?  large file transfer?  ordinary web surfing?  (4)  do you have any special networking needs (VoIP, video cameras, web servers), or do you just need to surf the web?  (5) Are you willing to buy additional equipment, such as wireless n adapters for your computers?  (6) If you already own a router, what is the make and model?
Please describe you networking equipment, and the planned network workload, in detail.

    Hello SBentley22,
I can only imagine how upset I would be to discover that over $1000 in gift card funds seemed to be missing. I certain that I would not do well with the additional complications that you've described either. I apologize for you and your boyfriend having to cope with this situation. Certainly this was never our goal.
I was unable to locate the purchases or returns that you mention using the information you provided when you signed up for Best Buy Unboxed. I would very much like to look into this situation for you and do what I can to help, but I will need more information to begin. If you will please send me a private message that includes your full name, telephone number, and the Customer Service PIN from the receipt where the gift card was issued, I'll get started with my research.
Please know that I'm extremely grateful that you took the time to bring your situation to our attention. I look forward to hearing from you.

i have downloaded an album off iTunes and some of the songs stop half way they just go silent! should i buy the album again? or what can i do to fix it?

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

I just downloaded Ilife 9 and now my Iphoto doesn't open. The error message says: You cannot open your library using this version. Quit and use the older version. What can I do?

iLife '09 is not available as a download - it is only available as a purchase
iLife '11 is available as a DVD purchase and the compoments of it are available from the App Store (iPhoto '11 (version 9.1.5), etc)
Exactly what did you do? And exactly what does the error message say?
On the surface it appears that you are attemptying to open a new library with an older version (iPhoto '09 can not open an iPhoto '11 library for example)

  • With the new ipad coming out soon, why should I buy the ipad 2?

with the new ipad coming out soon, why should I buy the ipad 2?

I can only echo what Pogo says about buying based on what it does today.
3 weeks ago I bought a Mac Mini. A new Mac Mini model has been rumoured to come out anywhere between the same week I made my purchase and the end of August. None's been released as yet.
I wanted one in the week of June that I bought mine so I bought it based on the fact that it did what I wanted and I couldn't imagine anything which could be added that I'd want - my MacBook Pro doesn't have Thunderbolt so the most likely addition isn't really going to be much use for me.
Basically you have to buy what you what based on what's out at the the time.
I can promise that within seconds of the iPad3 being released, the web will be full of rumours about the next one!

    Hi David,
I got a gigadesign 1.467 single processor upgrade for my tired 'ol G4 466 about a year ago. I paid around $450 at the time and now they have a 1.8 single for $299!
I have zero bad things to say about the upgrade. Easy to install (although a little nerve wracking!) and it's been running hassle free ever since. It's given me the juice to take advantage of Space Designer as well as keeping up with my CPU sucking Native Instruments software.
I did plenty of research as far as compatibility before comitting to the upgrade and have had zero issues.
Obviously a new computer is the next step but that processor upgrade has kept me chugging along enough to stay in the game thus far.

  • Should I buy the new MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro

Should I buy the new MacBook Air or the MacBook Pro?

it really depends what you are going to be doing, if you are going to be video editing and doing intensive stuff the Macbook Pro.
if you are going to be just browsing the web and doing lite video editing and not that intensive stuff than you should go with the Macbook Air.
Also if you want a cheaper computer than you should get the Macbook Air.  By cheap, I mean less expensive.

  • Why should anyone buy an EXTENDED WARRANTY if you won't honor it? Yamaha Receiver fails and so do U

Spent about $300.00 bucks on a Yamaha Receiver. At first I had heard all the stories about lack of customer service, but my wife talked with me in the car and I went back and figured what the hell.....so I got it. Supposed to take over after Yamaha's warranty ran out. Instead when I went back to deal with the problem, Receiver in hand to my Local BEST BYE, we could not find a manager. Then they could not find the warranty. Seems like when it benefits you stuff just vanishes.

    Hello IbedoctorGonzo,
Welcome to the forum, and I sincerely apologize for the delay in replying to your post. Buying the Geek Squad Protection plan is a great way to ensure that should something go wrong with your Yamaha receiver, like a manufacture defect, you are covered, and I'm very sorry they were not able to locate the plan when you took it in for service.
The Geek Squad Protection plan ID number should be on the purchase receipt if you still have it. Using the e-mail you registered on the forum, I was unable to locate your information.  If you would like me to assist in locating your plan please send me a private message with your full name, e-mail address, phone number that we have on file for you, and zip code. To send me a private message simple click to the right of my signature below.
Thank you again for posting here on the forum, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Should i buy the latest ipod touch 4G 2011 ,or wait for an update on it's hardware ?
Do you think guys that it will take about a year for it's future update ? Please help me decide .

Only Apple knows what they will be doing and they have not told outsiders yet.  Maybe new harware in about a year but maybe earlier or later.  If you wnat the4G purchase it.

  • Should I buy the top-of-the-line 15" MBP or the Baseline 15" model (isa)

Now, I'm looking to buy a new 15" MBP when Mac OS X Lion comes out (isa). But my problem is should i buy the top-of-the-line model or the Baseline Model (isa).
So, I'm also waiting for the MBP with the new design maybe 2013 model (isa) so let's say the MBP is going to stay with me for 1 and a half years or two years(isa). I also have to tell you that I'm NOT THAT MUCH OF A GAMER, so tell me guys, with all the info that I've given you. which one do you recommend. O, btw, this is my FIRST Mac (isa).Plus, I'm also planning to upgrade the screen resolution to 1680 by 1050 resolution and the HDD to 500GB@7200RPM (isa)

It really depends on how your going to use it. For general usage, the baseline 15" model will be fine. The major difference between the baseline and top of the line model is the graphics card. Since you don't do much gaming, the improved graphics the top of the line model offers won't really effect you and the graphics card included in the baseline model is plenty fast any way. The faster processor clock speed offered by the top of the line model will offer a negligible performance improvement in day to day use too, only really benefiting you in more advanced tasks like video editing.
Finally, since you only plan to keep the MBP for 1 & 1/2 years, there's really not much point in spending large amounts of money on upgrades when you plan to replace the system soon.
Overall, in your case, there isn't much point in getting the top of the line model since you don't need the extra graphics performance unless your doing high end video editing, photo editing or gaming (which you say your not). Stick with the baseline model.

  • Should I buy the new ipad air?

I have an ipad 4 without the cellular capability and have always wanted one with that capability.  I've been waiting for the new ipad and now that it's out I'm asking the experts here - should I buy the new one or get an ipad4 with cellular?

My first iPad (first gen) was a 16. I managed well with it. Then upgraded to a 3rd gen with 32 GB. What I found was that if the space was there, I used it, even though I thought 16 was plenty. And suspect if I had gone to a 64 or a 128, would have found the same thing. If you think there is a chance that 128 would work better for you, that's what I would go with. Better to have it and not really need it, than not to have and wish you did.

  • I have been considering buying Aperture 3 but the numerous, negative reviews are making me wary.  Should I buy the first version - Aperture 2.1.1 instead?

I have been considering buying Aperture 3 but the numerous, negative reviews are making me wary.  Should I buy the first version - Aperture 2.1.1 instead?
I have a 2009 MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard.  I do not think I will upgrade to Lion because I was warned that it may conflict with some of my applications.
There have been so many reviews that talk about how Aperture 3 is so slow and spends too much time searching for Faces and eventually crashes.  And, many reviews mention that you need to add to your RAM which I can't do right now, especially on a 3 year old computer.
There are some copies Aperture 2 on Amazon.  Would that be a good place to buy a copy or a used copy?
I would appreciate some good advice.  Thanks, Taf Schaefer

Obviously you haven't read the reviews of Aperture 2
FWIW I use Ap3 on both a 2010 MBP (8 gigs of Ram) and an 2008 iMac (4 gigs) and I have no crashing issues whatever. Remember, you can disable Faces if you don't want to use that feature.

Just an FYI: iPhoto supports exactly the same Raws as Aperture.

  • Should I Buy the 17" Macbook Pro

    Hi
Should i buy the 17" Macbook Pro now or should i wait to there have been some reviews of it, or until after August when apple is expected to upgrade to the new 64Bit processors.
    Thanks in advance

I have written a thread on the problems with the 17"
Please look at it and be willing to accept that all or none may effect you
After looking at the whole picture I decided to go ahead and buy a 17"
Within a week there will be a better picture of how widespread the problems are, you may wish to wait till this point to see.
I would Not wait for merom
    1) I feel the wait is going to be longer than expected
    2) benefits of merom:
64 bit: it will be a year or more past introduction for most programs to get to 64bit
800 FSB: probably be the thing people will notice the most
4GB maximum ram: 2gb sticks will be outrageously expensive for quite some time, so not a factor unless you are willing to dish out the dough.
    3) given the wattage of merom heat may be a big problem
Overall I think the benefits of merom will be felt in years not months for most consumers. I am picking up the current 17" to serve me for a few years and then sell on ebay and upgrade to 64 bit.
I hope this information helps you.

  • Should I buy the imac with expandable memory slot for future os upgrade size?

Should I buy the imac with expandable 8gb memory slot for future os upgrade size?

I Always try to have a little more RAM on my computers that I think I'll need when I purchase them. Either have more ram installed when you order the iMac or purchase one with open slots for upgrading.
I Purchase my iMac 5K with only 8 GB RAM but it had two open slots. As soon as I received the iMac I purchased two 8 GB modules form Other World Computeing. That brought my RAM to 24 GB. I run multiple applications and the iMac runs smoothly.
