Should I buy this computer?

I am thinking about closing a deal on craigslist.com for a macbook pro. He is asking $1,200. Here are the specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz,
15 inch display
Mac OS X 10.49
2 GB ram
HD capacity of 120 GB
I checked the warranty and it is covered under apple care until August of 2010. The computer is apparently in mint condition with no repair history. The catch is that the system only comes with a new power adapter and not any original accessories or box (which seems slightly shady). The guy claims it was his brothers computer and he took/lost the original equipment.
Also, if I go and check out this computer what kind of diagnostic checks should I run to make sure everything is A OK? (I am a former PC user trying to switch to MAC so everything is still a bit foreign)
Any advice would be helpful!
Thanks,
Jon

It seems to be a good deal. There are several hardware checks. For RAM and Logic Board you need the DVD that come with the computer (I don't know if it will be included since that's a important item). You can run the processor test by typing "yes" in Terminal. This make the processor goes to 100% and if your computer doesn't crash after a few minutes while you're using other applications at the same time then that means there's nothing wrong with the processor. There's also Disk Utility to check for hard drive issues. You can see if the SMART status is verified (if it is that means its okay). Also you can use Disk Utility to fix any common errors. Also some features of Disk Utility requires the OS DVD so I could ask for the seller to find it (if he can't try knocking off a few hundred bucks for it).

    Depends
If you need a cellphone then No.
If he wants more than $1 then No.
I would suggest that you buy an iPod Touch from Apple.

What types of names do you use your computers ?
Whether you name them after quantum particles or the romantic poets...
They will each start to be appended with "-2" then "-3" etc if you auto configure network settings from Airport Router  DHCP service and you have this Change computer name issue where pop up window states name is already being used on your LAN

  • Dear Yoga 2 Pro owners - should I buy this for business use?

I'm a Lawyer and looking for an ultra book to do the majority of my work on.
My only requirements are good keyboard and trackpad, durability, high quality screen to make reading and creating documents as friendly on the eyes as possible, great wireless connection, speed, and for it to last hopefully 2 years before needing an upgrade.
I use acrobat pro and office 2013 extensively.
Will the Yoga 2 Pro be a good choice for me, or should I wait for the thinkpad x1 carbon to be released in my country? (UK).
Thanks for any help you can provide

The 1800p resolution is a gimmick since programs are not really capable with this resolution. That said, you will probably reduce the resolution to at least 1080p or worst. I use 900p because some programs even struggle with 1080p.
This model has wifi issues which is present on certain models of routers using 2.4 ghz band. Many have been lucky to be around new routers. However, you cannot tell a hotel, airport or coffee shop to change the router just for you. I personally suffer from wifi issue at my school. I have already made a batch file to reconnect instantly but, this is utter BS for a $1200+ laptop (don't forget tax).
The yellow issue is better but not perfect. In some modes, the mustered color is still present. I solved the issue by deleting those power plans from my computer. However, this is not an acceptable solution. That said, even on the fixed power plan, there is a slight green tint on the yellow. Also, Microsoft Office yellow (like the highlighter) looks like crap on all power plans.
The backlight on the keyboard is really dull compared to many backlit keyboards.
The trackpad deselects what you selects, if you crank up the trackpad speed. For me, the default speed is too slow. (However, it can be fixed by using a dell driver)
The micro HDMI slot is too recessed. You will need to buy special cables or cut your cables to fit the yoga.
The SD slot has little depth. This means there is not a SD card in the market that will sit flush with the laptop. This is a deal breaker if you want to have an SD card act as a semi-permanent extra storage solution.
The trackpad is a grease magnet and will look bad within 72 hours of use.
You cannot lock this version of OKR. This means that unlike the previous version (which cannot be installed), anyone can be a di** and reformat your computer with a push of a button.
The fan goes crazy within about 30 min of light use.
The screen flickers at low brightness.
Almost everyone has light bleed on their screen, to some degree.
It is impossible to clean smudge marks on the yoga's back shell.
There is an overheating issues when the yoga is placed inside a bag, while in sleep mode.
    The edges chip easily.
The Bluetooth constantly disconnect and a Bluetooth mouse is practically un-usable, useless you have a USB receiver (taking up 1 of 2 USB ports).
Speaking of which, 2 USB ports.... Really? Also, why can't they both be USB 3.0? Or the USB 2.0 also be an eSATA/USB combo jack?
Part of the keyboard driver, built into the Utility.exe file of the Power Management software, sucks. There are certain keys that will do nothing 1/2 the time they are pressed. The airplane mode key is one of them.
Lenovo custom install makes upgrading to a different version of windows difficult. To upgrade to Windows 8.1. Pro for example, you will need to jump through hoops and suffer from a failed update(s) to actually get Windows 8.1 Pro. I am lucky the feature I wanted works (in spite of the failed updates) but, I would not be surprise if certain features don't work since the upgrade failed 3x.
Oh and if you are a Dargon users, I hope you don't plan on updating your program. However, I will leave it at that since software can be uninstalled, like the buggy phone companion software (which sporadically works on limited ICS versions and rare JB versions).

  • Should I buy this clearance G5 iMac?

I'm in the market for a new Mac (my five-year-old Blueberry is starting to show its age). I was considering a Mini or an eMac, but then I found a place selling clearance iMacs.
I can get a G5 iMac with a 17" monitor, 1.6GHz processor, 80 GB hard drive, model number M9248LL/A, OS X Panther, for a nice clearance price.
Question is, is this a reliable machine? I'm guessing it's last year's model since it has 2004 software. Is this a first-generation G5 iMac that should be avoided? Should I get a new eMac or Mini, or go for this even though it's an older model?
    Thanks!
    Sue

Sue: I read over the ad for this machine. My impression is that it is not refurished, though it's possible it may be a display model, i.e., "open box." I suppose it could also be a "return" item that someone who purchased and then returned it under the store's return policy. But the company does say that it tests the computer to ensure it is running ok, whatever that means. Do they power it up and ensure all apple software is there and then shut it down?
Saving $400. is certainly a lot of money, esp. if you can get this beautiful machine for the same $ you could get the high end minimac. I also noticed that the ad says that some or all of the cd's may not be included. If that's the case then I would definitely think it's a returned machine. I have a Rev. A iMac I am thoroughly happy with and aside from some minor glitches, it has performed well. But many others had problems with Rev. A machines making lots of noises. If this is a returned machine which someone returned because it made too much noise, it may still work flawlessly but be aggravating. On the other hand, it may not have any problems at all.
So, if you can call the company and ask specific questions about the machine, they may satisfy you into purchasing it. If not, perhaps getting a refurb from Apple might make better $$ sense. By the way, I read the one year warranty as being covered by Apple, not CompUSA. Hence, you should have no problem purchasing Applecare, which I wholly recommend since these machines aren't cheaply repaired. Either way you go I truly hope you enjoy yo0ur imac as much as I've enjoyed mine. walt
PS: Since you will be doing some photo-editing, I recommend adding at least another 256 mb ram; the 256 ram for this machine is underpowered, hence the reason Apple now ships it's Rev B macs with 512mb. Of course, if you can afford to go with even more ram, that is better. I bought a 512 mb ram module from Crucial for about $70.

  • Should I buy this laptop?

So on a mac forum website I got offered a 2.0GHZ white macbook laptop with a new 160 GB HDD running leopard. he thinks he got it in 2007 and is running well. do you think this will keep running well for a while? do you think it will last for years (until I graduate high school and get a new laptop for college) or will it crash or slow down a ton in he next few years? He is offering it for 350 do you think I should take it? or if its not gonna last should i get an ipad 2, cause Im not gonna spend over 600 for a laptop/tablet and it seems like an ipad would run smoothly for 4 years.

You always take a chance when you buy used from non-Apple dealers.  Best way to buy used is to get it refurbished from Apple.   ****If**** it works its, a great deal, you just can't tell.  Life's like that.  Good luck.

I am in the market for a laptop and want a Mac of some sort, and will probably be getting a used one. I will be using it for Logic/Final Cut, but not as my main machine. Other than that it will be used for other everyday computing.
I had been set on getting a used black macbook, but recently saw this one advertised locally for $550.
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP13 it is the 2.2ghz Core 2 Duo 15 inch. on the left.
Would you recommend this laptop? I am not familiar with the older MBP's and any issues they may have had that I need to be aware of.
There is also a mint condition Black Macbook for sale locally for $625 with these specs: 2.0 Core 2 duo, 2 GB RAM, 160GB Hard Drive.
Which would you recommend? I like the black, but could used the extra screen size.

The original MBP's just had the two chips that I mentioned earlier. Of the two, it's probably better to go for the NVIDIA Ge Force 8600M GT since it is covered by the Apple program and because it is newer and faster than the earlier one. And as has been pointed out, not all of these chips had the problem--just a few of them. My 17" MBP has that chip, and I too have never had a problem with it. I mostly wanted to be sure that you were aware of this potential problem before buying. The 15" you are considering is still a very fine computer and would serve you well.
My own late 2007 machine has been very trouble free, and I agree that most of the Macs with the NVIDIA chip have probably not had any problems. You may want to add more RAM and possibly replace the hard drive at some point if that hasn't already been done, but otherwise I think this MacBook Pro would be more machine for the money than any MacBook.
I agree with getting all the original system discs and discs for any other software--that's really important. Also test it out as much as possible before buying.
    Good luck!

  • Should I buy this game

Ok so I'm kinda broad looking for a brand new FPS game and I wranded into kill zone 3 and it looks amazing, should buy it yes or no

You can't play this game like CoD. mindless running around on maze maps does not translate to Killzone. I would say just try to play "as if" you were actually there. maximize your kills while minimizing risk to yourself. WHILE keeping the objectives in mind.
I know it sounds like common sense but I always see people running into rooms/areas outside of cover with complete disregard for their own life. Then they get gunned down and wonder why.
I usually play against Bots on hard difficulty. Every now and then someone will join my game, get killed a few times and then leave. I think I've seen two players join my game and actually play until the round finishes. Which brings me to my next point. You have to stick with it. you'll probably suck a$$ at first but that is to be expected. I definitely did. but I stuck with it and you'll gradually see you're KDR improve while getting missions done.

  • Advice solicited - should i buy this camcorder?

I think I am going to buy a Canon XH A1S camcorder, but before I do I wonder if any Forumista is using it and can tell me how it relates to Final Cut Express?
There are a number of posts about it, but they relate to specific problems, not a general view of the camcorder itself.
I have read a multitude of reviews and they all seem favorable (in some groupings with suspiciously similar effulgent comments) save for one gentleman who said the camcorder was "shoddy" and the front mic holder "wobbly." Too, one reviewer talked about the A1S but referred to working with mini DV tapes, so I am hoping that he is confused and means the XH A1.
How is working with SD tapes and FCE? Good? Should I look elsewhere?
Any comments would be appreciated as I will soon be putting pen to check and submitting a claim for some of that stimulus money that is floating around.
As always, thank you in advance.

Nowhere in this camera's specs does it mention tape. Only an SD card. Am I missing something?
As for AVCHD I remember reading that it must be laboriously converted to the FCE format before it can be edited. Another step!
I m spending more time on research than Sloan-Kettering.
Thanks for the reply, Sasha, and reminding me that you ARE Sasha. I felt uncomfortable calling you Skalicki.
Can anybody out there recommend an AVCHD professional camcorder that works well with FCE and which they use that won't require me to go back to stick-ups?
    Thanks,Sasha.

    1) Is anything overkill?
    2) Is anything underkill?
    3) Any incompatible things I've researched?
    4) Anything I've missed?
    5) 32gb 2800mhz ram is about the same as 16gb 3200mhz ram, what to pick?
    Thanks!
    Mr D

    1) Is anything overkill? yes, get a single GTX 980 instead of the dual 970's
See my above reply. Let me know if you think i'm still in "overkill", seeing what I've been told on Blender forums are contrary.
    2) Is anything underkill? yes, go with a 6 or 8-core for a Premiere Pro x99 build; if that is too expensive, get a earlier gen x79 6-core with much less $$$ DDR3 memory
The processor is a 6 core, is it not? Did I show you the wrong one? Let me know!
    3) Any incompatible things I've researched? nope, you're good there
    4) Anything I've missed? DVD or Blu-ray burner?
I have a Blu ray drive already.
    5) 32gb 2800mhz ram is about the same as 16gb 3200mhz ram, what to pick? Definitely go with 32GB; this will help lots more than speed
    Sounds good!
    Thanks!

  • When I tried to download some music to my IPhone off of my PC and it said "Should we trust this computer?" and I accidentally clicked Don't Trust. How do I fix it so it will trust my computer?

How do I fix this? I need this music downloaded so I can pratice for a play.

When you connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new computer or another device attempting to access the files of your iOS device, you’ll be asked to verify that you trust the connected device. Tapping Trust will allow this device to access files stored on your iOS device.
If your iOS device is passcode locked, you need to unlock the device before you're asked to trust the connected computer or device.
    To trust a computer:
Connect the computer or other device to your iOS device.
If your iOS device is locked with a passcode, unlock it.
    Tap Trust.
If you're about to sync the device with iTunes, click Accept.
The trusted computer or device can access the files and settings of your iOS device. A trusted computer can sync with your iOS device, import photos, access movies and videos, contacts, and other such content, until you disconnect. The data stored on your iOS device is not exposed before you enter your passcode (if enabled) and choose to trust the connected computer or device.
If you choose not to trust the connected computer, you can charge your device, but the connected computer won't be able to access any content on your device.
    Additional Information
Note: If you select Trust, the computer will be trusted indefinitely. If you select Don't Trust, you will be asked if you want to trust that computer each time you connect your device to that computer.
RECONNECT IT AGAIN AND PRESS TRUST

  • Performance and import stuff - should I buy this program?

    hey guys,
as I was looking for a easy-to-use program for my video workshops with kids I stumbled upon premiere elements.
looks cool, but some things puzzle me:
    1) I´m trying it on a brand new i7 notebook, but its running as slow as if I´d be using tons of material and a 10 year old mashine.
(there is only one pal video (15sec) and 10 photos. the project settings are the same as the video)
    2) when I want to import a soundfile from a SD card, he only lets me import via "video importer".first he lets me choose the file in the browser, then he says "you want to import from a removable media, use the video importer"? do I have to copy it to harddrive first? unnessecary step.
and then, in the video import window, he shows me all files on the card, checked, so if I click "import", he loads all the stuff on the card, again. so I uncheck everything, but there is not the wave-file I recorded and chose 1 minute ago in the browser, just all the mp3s and videos...
this is pretty f**ked up and counter-intuitive.
can someone tell me solutions for that?
otherwise I simply cant buy 10 licences for a program that makes every single kid ask me how to import and stuff.

What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?
When you started your Premiere Elements project, which settings did you select? If you've selected the correct project settings, you will NOT see red lines above your clips when you add them to your timeline. Is this the case in your project?
The key to efficiency with this program is matching your project settings to your source video, as discussed in the first two parts of my free 8 part Basic Training tutorial series.

  • Should i buy this MSI K8N NEO board or shouldi skipp it ?

Im reading so many problems that you guys are having with this board that it makes those reviews i read seem fake.   For one i was gana buy a Dangerden RBX waterblock to continue the watercooling on my pc which iv done for 2 years now, with a 3000+ clawhammer Mobile and this MSI K8N NEO platinum board.
Now im reading on here in the faq and from otherp eople that the board supportsm obiles but has tons of Quirks in it, people o nthe overclockers.com forums with mobiles and this board have to run @ 1.7 to get the cpu to run @ stock thats pathetic.  Also i keep seeing people o nthese forums that are only getting 166fsb/250HTT ratios, or lower.
I thought this board can do 300HTT or maybe close to it.  Yet tons of people are getting only 210-240HTT max on thier board's. because they cant seem to lower the multi's.
Now that i read all this stuff im thinking of buying the new Epox board with a desktop 3200 clawhammer, unless thier are some people out thier who havent had any probs with mobiles and overclocking.

It isnt just the Graphic issue with the 9600's im talking abut, its the whole bunch of otherp roblems, where people cant install windows xp or 2000, or are having overclocking issues, or having issues with 2 or more sticks of ram, where some boards support mobiles and some dont and the ones that do like the K8N NEO have major problems like Multiplyer and voltage issues.
Its really very sad.  Im pissed off right now iwanna upgrade my pc but it seems any mobo i wanna go to has major problems.

  • Should i buy this Imac G5

its on ebay, here the link
advertises, 20"screen, 2.1Ghz processor, isight, 1.5Gb Ram, 250GB Hard drive, elgato eyetv for digital freeview and MS office for mac.
I know the advertisement leaves alot to be desired, but say i collect and pay there given the mac is sound. Do you think its worth me paying upwards of 1000 GBP approx $1750 US for this 2nd hand. Does the spec look plausible for 2 months old?

    maty_poo,
    Maybe.
I bought my Power Mac on eBay for about 55% of the price of a new one. It was an easy transaction and I am very satisfied.
    My suggestions:
    1. Spend some time "watching" machines that you are interested in to get a feel for how much they are selling for. "Some time" in my case was about 3 weeks.
    2. Pay attention to the seller's "reputation". Be sure to read every negative review carefully. My seller had a 98% postive rating so I felt comfortable.
    3. Pay only with a credit card. American Express is the best at defending your interests.
    4. Insist that the seller insure the shipment. Insist that the seller ships via a trusted (e.g., DHL, FedEx) method.
    5. Don't get caught up in the excitement of the auction. Know your maximum bid before making your first one. If you lose to a higher bidder, then so be it.
