Should I calibrate before first use?

I received my MacBook pro a few hours back and I haven't started it yet. I have kept it to charge fully. Should I calibrate it right away? Or would that be a waste of a cycle.

It isn't essential but should be done before you plan to use the computer on battery power.

  • I forgot to charge my Creative Zen mp3 player fully before first using it

I forgot to charge my Creative Zen mp3 player fully before first using it, and started syncing music onto it while it was charging for the first time. How much damage do you think this would have caused, and is there anything I can do to correct my mistake? Thanks.

I didn't fully charge my player the first time I used it and it works fine. The battery life seems to be on par with everyone else's. Also if you just plugged it into the computer and started syncing music you don't have anything to worry about. Even though you were syncing music you were still charging and not depleting the battery. I think the recommendation means that you don't "use" the player meaning unplug it from your computer with only a half charge and then run the battery out. Anyways, your player will be just fine.

  • "XI demo examples must be configured before first use"

Trying to execute the "Checking Flight Seat Availability" (Proxy-to-Proxy Communication) in Client 105 but there seems to be a problem. A new SAP screen states "XI demo examples must be configured before first use, Read the documentation under Help - Application Help", and unfortunately there is no content in the Help either. I am 100% sure that the example have been properly configured according to the Configuration Guide but obviously I have missed something. The BSP application in the SAP system of the Integration Server (client 105) has been activated.

Please note the following points from SAP help. please note the sentence in bold wich states that you must create the configuration objects yourself. Since different customers have different requirements in an integration scenario, Integration Directory content is not shipped. It is the task of consultants and administrators to configure the data in the Integration Directory at the customer site
The features of the demo examples include several complete integration scenarios and comprise the following parts:
    ·        Design objects in the Integration Repository
The design objects are defined and shipped by SAP.
    ·        Configuration objects in the Integration Directory
You must create the configuration objects yourself. SAP provides comprehensive recommendations to help you.
    ·        Example applications
SAP has implemented example applications for the communication parties involved. These example applications also contain user interfaces. You use these to execute the demo examples.
    ·        Configuration guide
Detailed configuration instructions for the standard configuration recommended by SAP are available for the demo examples. These describe all the steps required to configure the demo examples in detail. A basic knowledge of Process Integration is sufficient to be able to make the relevant configuration settings.
    ·        Documentation
Besides the detailed configuration instructions, additional documentation is also available. This also describes how to use the individual demo examples and explains the technical concepts addresse

  • Do you have to fully charge the battery before first use?

I just bought a macbook air and i'm wondering if I should wait for the battery to fully charge before I turn the computer on (like you usually do with phones, cameras etc.)
or can I just plug in the AC charger and get started right away?

    Hi Alice,
I recommend you check out this article for some advice.

A good practice that I follow is to do a battery calibration right away and then plan to do one about every 4-6 weeks.

  • First use of MBP

When I buy a new MBP, do I have to fill the battery before first use, like the old cell phones, or is it already charged, ready to use?

I would plug it in and use it on AC power. The battery may be partly drained when you receive it, depending on where it's been and how long. You won't do it any harm if you start right away using it on battery power, but you may find yourself needing to charge it before it's convenient for you, so it will be better not to plan on a long unplugged session right out of the box.

  • Should I upgrade to Mac OS X v10.7 before I use Time Machine for the first time?

I bought a macbook pro in 2008. I recently purchased an external hard drive and I can't decide what's the best option:
    1. Use Time Machine using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 ?
    2. Upgrade to Lion before I use Time Machine (first time)
    3. Or just drag my photos and music manually (those are the only things I need to back up)
    Thoughts?

I see. My only fear is there seems to be a lot of people who orginally were using Time Machine on SL, then upgraded to Lion and now Time Machine becomes screwy.
Also, if I buy a new Mac (eventually) with Lion, I worry that if I've been using TM on SL, the transition to Lion wont be smooth. I may be overthinking this, but I just want to get it right.
But I see your point: I need to get a full back up of my system as it is now before I make any changes. Thanks for your help.

  • I have two hard drives on my mac 10.5.8 power pc and hear the clickking sounds of the first hard drive and think that it may be dying, can I install everything on the other hard drive also and wait for the first drvie to die before i use the other drives

I have two hard drives on my mac 10.5.8 power pc and hear the clickking sounds of the first hard drive and think that it may be dying, can I install everything on the other hard drive also and wait for the first drive to die before i use the other drives? Or, what is the best way to handle this?

I do not know what you are waiting for.
I'd make a backup of your important stuff before cloning the entire disk.
Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external  firewire drive.  You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

SuperDuper is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless. Its incredibly clear, friendly interface is understandable, easy to use, and SuperDuper's built-in scheduler makes it trivial to back up automatically. And it runs beautifully on both Intel and Power PC Macs!

  • Is iphone required to be kept for charging for 8 hours before its first use?

is iphone required to be kept for charging for 8 hours before its first use?

No!    The phone can be used if there is any charge in it at all. It can be charged at any time, regardless of the current state of charge, and for any duration. It cannot be overcharged, it's too smart.
I think Kappy was having a NiCad moment...   lithium batteries make far less demands of the user.

  • I started to do a backup from my iphone 5s following a notice the device gave. but it was unsuccessful and in the first use I saw my iphone battery drains drastically. what should i do now?

I started to do a backup on my iphone 5s following a notice the device gave. but it was unsuccessful and in the first use of my iphone I saw my iphone battery drains drastically. I had upgraded the software to ios 7.1. what should i do now? is this a problem with the battery?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

Here's the article on how to calibrate your battery:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
I don't know if you will be able to calibrate your battery successfully at this point or not. If you can, it will likely look even more unhealthy.
Sadly, I think your battery is on its way out. As Retired Engineer points out, it hasn't had enough usage for optimum performance at only 69 cycles in close to 3 years. They also will deteriorate over time, whether or not you calibrate them or use them properly.
You might find Battery University an interesting read:
    http://www.batteryuniversity.com/partone-21.htm
Also this kb article from Apple:

I don't think there is any way to bring this battery back to health. Unfortunately, the cure is going to be a new battery.
    Good luck!

  • 2 Qs PRIMARY Q: Should one compact before deleting TB email or vice versa

HELLO, MY PRIMARY QUESTION: Apparently compacting is part of deletion. But should one Compact before Deleting TB email or Vice Versa OR does it matter which comes first?
SECONDARY NOTE & QUESTION;i have read the article on compacting but still do not know exactly what this word means- (e.g. does it means compressing & why is it absolutely necessary for deletion? In this regard the TB compacting article says in PERTINENT part; "IF the message is marked as DELETED or moved, Thunderbird SKIPS that message and moves onto the next message." The preceding quote would seem to say that compacting is not part of deletion, yet i know (or think I know) that both deleting a email and compacting it are necessary for its TOTAL DELETION in TB. Can anyone explain this seeming contradiction? ( I used to use Outlook and i do not remember the term "compacting" with that system).
ANY ANSWER TO EITHER QUESTION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU

Deleting a message marks it for deletion and hides it. Compacting actually removes it and frees up the disk space. Delete then compact.
Despite the poorly chosen name compacting has nothing to do with compressing files as in zipping them.

  • Should i calibrate ipad 4 battery? and best way

I have had iPad 4 for 1 and half years. Battery performance is still good but battery meter is acting weird. Battery jump drops to stuck at a percent for long. I have never calibrated battery as told by apple of full discharge and then full charge as i have heard it hurts the battery. Should i calibrate and how(best way)?. Thanks.

    Battery care
    1. Make sure you run the battery down to 5% and then charging it to 100% once a month.
    2. You should start charging your iPad when the battery charge is less than 10%. Over discharging the battery will shorten the lifespan of its battery.
    3. Never store the battery fully discharged. Apply some charge before storage, and then charge fully before use.
    4. When possible avoid frequent full discharges. Instead, charge the battery more often. There is no concern of battery's memory when applying unscheduled charges.
    5. Avoid iPad from overheating > 35°.
    6. Remove casing/sleeve when charging to allow heat to dissipate from back cover
    7. To save battery power turn off :
    a. background app refreshing
    b. push notifications and/or push mail
    c. lower screen brightness
    d. minimize the use of location services
    e. increase Fetch New Data interval.
