Should I/Can I upgrade my RAM?

I have a 2012 MacbookPro 13 inch, with 8GB RAM. I edit often with FinalCut Pro X, would it make sense to upgrade my RAM to 16GB? I have a 500GB hard drive.

If you have this model, Apple specs state max memory is 8 GB. Crucial and OWC confirm 16 GB max memory:
MacBook Pro (13-inch, mid 2012)
Number of memory slots
2
Base memory
4 GB
Maximum memory
8 GB
Memory card specifications
- Double Data Rate Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module (DDR3) format
- 67.6mm x 30mm (1.18 inch)
- 2 GB or 4 GB
- 204-pin
- PC3-12800 DDR3 1600 MHz type RAM
Additional notes
For best performance, fill both memory slots, installing an equal memory module in each slot.

Crucial's Link:
  2012 MacBook Pro 13" 15" – Up to 16.0GB 1600MHz DDR3 Memory
Should you?
From Activity Monitor > Memory Tab > Check the number of "page outs" and "swap space" used listed on the bottom pane. If page outs are regularly > 0 and swap space exceeds 1 GB, yes, you definitely should. 8 GB should be enough for your purposes, however.

you can upgrade to 16GB if you wish to do so...
average price for 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 is around $50 - $75 depending on the brand.
why not spend $100 and go with 16GB 1333MHz from Crucial or Corsair.
you can get them from Amazon.com or newegg.com

  • Can you upgrade the RAM on a Retina Display Macbook Pro?

So I've been looking around for information on whether the RAM on a Retina Macbook Pro can be upgraded and the mixed messages have left me confused. If I take my Macbook Pro (Retina Display) to an Apple store for a RAM upgrade and offer to pay them for the RAM and installation, would they do it for me?
Thanks and if you can't, please explain why.
I am aware that the RAM is soldered into the motherboard making it very difficult to perform the upgrade, but will some stores actually do it for you?

The MacBook Pro with Retina display is soldered onto the logic board, so RAM can't be added without replacing the logic board.
I know there are shops that may try to add more RAM without replacing the logic board, but they aren't official resellers and if something happens, the warranty will be voided. Apple won't do it.
If you want, you can sell your MacBook Pro and get another one with more RAM. It's the best way to do it, because I don't think you want to spend a lot of money replacing the logic board or you want to take it to a non-official technical support, putting the Mac in risk

  • Can i upgrade my RAM on my MacBook Pro Retina 13 inch late 2012?

    Hello,
Since yesterday i keep getting a screen which says my Program memory is low. and it keeps pausing the programs which are currently open.
then it gives me the option to force quit them. I also did disk utility. i cleaned languages which i don't need on my macbook. and i also cleaned my Cache.
I went from like 21 GB to 33 GB free of 120 GB.
Later i got an message again. so i'm really wondering if i should upgrade my RAM. its 8 GB 1600 Mhz.
As im a graphic designer i only use adobe programs. i don't got films or anything like that which could be the problem of a lot of disk space.
So i really don't know how this is possible.
    Greetings,
    Lars

  • I have macbook pro 13 inch 2.9GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7 with 8GB RAM can I upgrade my ram to 16 GB?

I Have bought The new MacBook Pro 13-inch:
    2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7
    Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    750GB 5400-rpm hard drive1
    Intel HD Graphics
My Q: Can I upgrade my memory ram from 8GB to 16GB ?

Sure. Make sure that you buy the RAM specified for your computer - 204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs - and purchase from a reputable dealer such as Crucial, OWC, etc.
You can go to the Crucial website and use the System Scanner app to get the correct RAM for your unit.

  • Can I upgrade my RAM more than apple recommends?

I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch (late 2011) that has 2 2gb ram installed. i want to upgrade my ram to speed up my computer and apple says the computer can only take up to 2 4bg sticks, while other websites say it can take 2 8gb sticks and use the full 16 gb with no issues. Is this true? Can I order the 2 8gb?
    Thanks

It all depends upon the type and number of applications you use.    If they are resource hungry and tend to require more than 8GB RAM, then 16 GB will be useful.  Most users will find 8 GB to be sufficient.
    Ciao.

  • Can I upgrade the ram memory of my Macbook air from 4gb to 8gb?

Anybody knows if I can upgrade the ram memory of a Macbook Air from 4gb to 8gb?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The memory in the MacBook Air is soldered onto the logic board, so you can't upgrade RAM after buying your computer. It's important to buy your MacBook Air with the amount of memory you will use because you won't be able to install more RAM

  • Can I upgrade my RAM/Flash Storage on my late 2013 13" retina display macbook pro?

I had just purchased my first macbook  on Christmas and it came on January 3, 2014. I realized that I only had 128GB of flash storage and 4GB of RAM. Now I am wondering if I can upgrade to 8GB of ram and 256GB (for future purposes)? If so, how much will it cost? If not, what do you recommend to save/gain flash storage?

If you exchange it, the Apple Store will assist you in migrating your data. Just, obviously, make sure to ask before the actual exchange occurs. You can alternatively make a Time Machine backup of your current machine and use Set-up assistant on the new machine.
The cost of flash storage/GB is dropping rapidly, but you are so much better off exchanging it if you are still able too. Most importantly, the new PCIe based flash storage for your model has not yet surfaced outside Apple. So, currently, 1) it wouldn't make sense to perform this upgrade, 2) you can't, to my knowledge. Your iMac10,1 has four (4) RAM/memory slots. You currently have two occupied slots and two empty ones. Each slot can accept up to a 4G RAM/memory modules for a total of 16GB RAM.
You can double you RAM to 8GM by installing two 2GB modules in the empty slots, or even fartherr to 12GB by using two 4GB modules. To get to the ful 16MB, you  will need to remove the two modules that shipped with your computer and put larger modules in their place.
    Installation is easy:

  • Can i upgrade my RAM on a macbook air

I have a 13 inch, first generation Macbook air, and i was wondering how i would go about adding more memory to it

You cannot. The original MBA came with 2 GBs of RAM on the motherboard, and there are no memory slots for expansion. The only way for you to get more RAM is to buy another computer that can handle more RAM.
