Should I change ISP before configuring a new MacBook?

I'm fed up with the expense and the attendant junkmail from my Demon account and would like to change ISPs. Is it best to do this before confuguring my newly-purchased (and unopened )MacBook ... or doesn't it make any difference? Any suggestions as to the most Mac-friendly ISPs?

Unless you are able to testing your ADSL connection after a change and before you get your MacBook you may find yourself having to possibly battle any issues on two fronts… is the ADSL connection or is it the MacBook.
I would ensure you have a stable and consistent connection before your MacBook arrives. That way you have one less thing to worry about.

    4. In case any of the previous operations work but the settings don't "stick".  There are two plists associated with the settings:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.XXXXX-XXXXXXX.plist
The first is global to all accounts while the second is in your home directory.  The X's are a sequence of hyphaninated  letters and numbers.  If you can get these removed then it will probably revert to a default resolution.

  • Before purchasing the new macbook 2.0, a simple quastion.

As I went over the technical aspects of the new macbook 2.0 13.3/ MACBOOK pro
I have noticed that the macbook 13.3 doesnt support esata or firewire connections
while the macbook pro does (firewire), why so?
What if I wish to buy an external fast-safe-data hard drive connection, like the "WD studion book with" firewire\esata?

hmmm, well ive got a problem.
you see, im living in israel, the new macbook costs about 7100nis = 1800$
while the new macbookPRO costs 11,000nis= 2900$
I cant afford myself such an expense, after all.
From your experience is it possible to watch a movie (with no lags) or listen to mp3 files while their physical position located in the ext' hard disk with usb port?
And how about PSD\Flash or other adobe format files?

  • Configurations to new macbook pro with retina display?

I decided to get the new 13 inch retina macbook pro. What I am trying to figure out now is if I should configure it for a faster processor or if I should get more RAM? The things that I will be running on it would be internet browsing, watching videos, microsoft office, and a game like Civ 5. But if I'm playing a game then I wouldn't be running other apps. I know little to nothing about computers. My understanding is that more RAM is better for running programs simultaneously. Right now I would be getting the baseline 13 inch one. So is it necessary to make any configurations/ will it run fine?

Remember that that nothing inside the Retinas is user-upgradeable, so you need to get what you need at the time of purchase.
Be sure the game(s) you want to play are compatible with the Intel Iris 5100 integrated graphics chipset in the Retina 13. Some games will not run at all on intergrated graphics.
Also understand that notebook computers, in order to be smaller than a New York City phone directory, have tiny cooling fans and limited airflow paths. The computer can get very hot running the more serious games.

  • Suggestions before I buy new Macbook - to check, bargain, confirm ?

    Hi All
After doing my research and comparisons on Macbook vs Macbook Air I have finally made up my mind about going for a White Macbook 2.2 Ghz, from apple store in Manchester.
Just wanted to check if any one has any suggestions/advice before I do collect it from the store like freebies (.mac account ???) , checks, missing stuff etc ?
Also, going through these forums I am pretty convinced I should upgrade it to 2/2.5 GB on my own. Anyone who would suggest against this ?

I'll just state my experience (all prices are in US Dollars). I bought an 12" iBook G3 600 20GB HD w/ combo-drive in early 2002 for $1500. I later saw that by the end of the year, the upgraded G3 800 (w/ combo-drive) was $1299 with a 30GB drive and several upgraded features. I don't think will happen any time soon, but sometimes the prices do get a little downward adjustment.
I don't know where to find a bargain per se. I know of a few local retailers that don't discount but throw in extras like a bag and/or extra memory. My last two Apple purchases were from Amazon.com, and both came with rebates, but that's US only.
Also - I wasn't sure exactly which "Manchester", although I was guessing the largest one. You might be better off getting one at your local Apple Store.

  • How can I put OSX 10.7 on a new Macbook Air. Maverick no longer allows "open file in a new window" and I really miss it. At the Apple Store they told me it can't be added to the new OSX 10.10 so I  want to change the OSX on the new Macbook Air and it

I have been using a 2012 Mac pro to do HD video editing. I bought a new portable Macbook Air only to find that Maverick no longer has "open files in a new window" which I use all the time in the very large folders of video clips and royalty-free music. I asked at the Apple Store how I could get this back on the Macbook Air and they said it couldn't be done so I thought I would re-format the HD and install 10.7 on it and was notified by the Macbook Air I can't put 10.7 on that computer. Apple use to give this as an option but now they have gone more to the attitude of "Do it our way or go to ****!" In anger I went out and bought a Dell Laptop and Pinnacle Studio 17 which I have been learning to use. I have been an Apple/Mac user since 1979 and would still rather do my video editing on a Mac. Is there any way that I can force the Macbook Air to let me load in OSX 10.7 where there is still the option to  "open files in a new window" or is there a way to add this to Maverick? The experts at the Madison, WI Couldn't give me any help on this.

Choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on the General tab, and uncheck the box to open folders in a new tab.

  • Problems configuring my new Mac

When I was configuring my new MacBook Pro, in the step of migrate my files to my old PC to the Mac, the PC turned off and my Mac is now blocked. How can I solve this problem?

I'm also planning to upgrade to a new Mac Pro, and just waiting for newest Intel "Penryn" processors:
    http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/
Having eSATA ports for external eSATA drives would be great.
I will go with a RAID, but haven't decided on the configuration - I'm thinking of having 3 or 4 drives in RAID 5; I perceive a benefit in going with the Apple RAID card rather than a cheaper third party card - it's designed to work well with the Mac Pro and with Apple Care you'd get warranty coverage. Can't decide if it's better to save money and buy drives from a third party (and maybe end up with them not covered by Apple Care), or to pay more and get the drives with the machine.
I got burned many years ago by four failed IBM 75GXP hard drives, so I think choosing a reliable hard drive is very important; I'll probably go with a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 or Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000. Great info here:

  • Should I wait to buy a new Macbook?

Should I wait to buy a a new Macbook until the Mountain Lion Software comes out?

I wouldn't wait - you are eligible to get Mountain Lion download free if you buy a new MacBook now, and it'll tkae Apple a few days (longer if not purchased directly from the Apple Store) to update the image. You aren't missing anything placing the order now.

  • I want a new Macbook!

    Dear friends,
at the beginning of the November my friends will be in New-York. I want to buy extended configuration of new MacBook Air (13 in., i7 1.8). As I understand this configuration is not available in retail Apple Stores and should be pre ordered for the delivery to concrete address.
According to this I’ve got few questions:
    - Can I order my new laptop via apple web-site and ask to make a deliver to my friends hotel? Can I use my AppleID (registered in Russia) and my card (of      russian bank) for this purchase?
    - Can I order my new laptop via apple web-site and ask to make a deliver to one of New-York’s Apple Store? Same questions – сan I use my
AppleID (registered in Russia) and my card (of russian bank) for this purchase?
Is there a way to deliver a laptop of this configuration in a retail Apple Store, so my friends bought it there? In this case I have to be sure that laptop of this configuration is waiting for them in store.
I want to find simplest way to buy MacBook Air of non standard configuration in US.
    Thanks a lot.
    Best regards. Kirill Kuznetsov

Apple does not provide store/purchasing support via email (at not least not until after you have placed an order).  You can call them, their phone number is listed on the web page.  The store customer service line is 1-800-676-2775, and will only work from inside the USA (since the USA store doesn't do business outside of the USA, they do not bother paying for an international toll free number).
    see http://store.apple.com/us/help/contact/
You cannot make a purchase from the Apple USA web store with a foreign credit card and foreign credit card billing address.

  • Prior Cloned Drive(s) won't recognize on New Macbook Pro

    Just bought a new (mid-2012) 13" MBP 2.9GHz i7; tried to either:
    swap it's drive with my prior (late-2011) MacBook Pro 13" (which I've swapped without issue before);
it yet it only shows a circle with a diagonal line through it (meaning it doesn't see the drive)?
I've always done this with a couple of my SuperDuper! (Lion 10.7.4) cloned drives before; yet this new macbook pro isn't recognizing them internally. They DO show up via Firewire/USB from my External; yet I am NOT able to boot from the External (as I used to be able to prior this new mbp).
    Also, please note:
    - I've used Disk Utilities (showing no issue).
    - I zapped the PRAM immediately.
    - The new Mac came with 10.7.3 (and my drives were 10.7.4).
    - I've updated this shipped drive to 10.7.4 (command-r).
    - I've tried to hold down the c-key upon startup.
Does anyone know why I could swap drives to my prior mbp; (as well as Boot from my External, but not with my new mbp?
Any suggestions to solve this are most welcome, thanks!

No, because in order to download it you must be using the new computer. Now, if you have an external enclosure for your existing drive, then you can connect it to the new computer and reinstall Lion. Since you would be booted on the new computer's Recovery HD, this would download and install the version of Lion compatible with your new computer onto the selected drive of your choice, such as the old drive in the external enclosure.
    The essential process:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Of course you would change the target drive to the external drive before starting the installation. Reinstalling may take upwards of an hour to complete excluding the time needed to download Lion.

    Help

    Hello Jen,
Congratulations on your new MacBook Pro!  I understand how important is to have your email account setup on your new computer. I found a couple of resources that I think might help.
You can check the Mail Setup Assistant for the server settings for common email providers.  I recommend checking your email settings here first to verify they match what you have in the Mail application:
    Mail Setup Assistant
    https://www.apple.com/support/macosx/mailassistant/
If the Mail Setup Assistant does not provide settings for your email account, you can use the following article when contacting your email service provider to gather the necessary information to setup your account:
Configuring Mail for your email account
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1277
If you are able to setup your account but messages are not being downloaded, I recommend reviewing the following article:

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Firefighter Configuration - FF Owner should not change the configuration

    Hello Experts,
We have requirement to restrict Firefighter configuration changes only to Firefighter Administrators.
    1. Restricting Firefighters to make any changes in Firefighter Configuration -- SAP Note 1101665 Superuser Security Role Modifies Tables - Successfully Achieved.
    2. Restricting Firefighter ID Owners (having /VIRSA/Z_VFAT_ID_OWNER) to make any changes in Firefighter Configuration --> Need your inputs on how to achieve this.
We want that Firefighter ID Owners can only assign the FFID to Firefighters and assign a new controller only, but no following should be allowed to Firefighter Owners -->
    a. Creating a new owner for a FFID.
    b. Changing Firefighter configuration.
    c. Creating or changing Reason Codes.
And which role should be assigned to Firefighter ID Controller?
Looking forward to hear from your experiences.
    Thanks & Regards
    Davinderpal Singh

Thanks Alpesh and Simon for your valuable inputs.
My observations are, if you assign Firefighter Owner and Controller role only, then user is not able to make any configuration change, Reason Code change, etc, etc - behaviour is as expected.
And in our case, this problem is coming as FF owners/controllers have been assignbed few other roles/profiles which seems to override the authorisations of FF owner role and allow changes in FF configuration.
Now searching through each of these roles/profiles for extra set of authorisation objects is a huge security job.
And we don't have much experience in Security - so as per your experiences what should be the best way to restrict FF owners to not make any change in FF configurations, without removing existing roles/profiles ( as we don't know what all would be removed if we remove all of these roles).
Is it possible to specify a condition/check so that if a user has been assigned FF owner role, inspite of whatever extra permission he has - he should not be able to make configuration changes - please bear with me if i am expecting too much over here.
Which authorisation objects controls FF configurations changes?
    Best Regards
    Davinderpal Singh

  • I have an Ipad first generation with IOS 5.1.1. and I have just got a new ipad mini. Should I use the back up of the old Ipad from Itunes copy to configure the new one, or it is better to configure the new one from scratch?

I have an Ipad first generation with IOS 5.1.1. and I have just got a new ipad mini. Should I use the back up copy of the old Ipad from Itunes to configure the new one, or it is better to configure the new one from scratch?

Contrary to the opinion above, I see no reason whatsoever why you can't set up the new iPad from the backup of the old one. Obviously you will have app updates to make and complete and that sort of thing, but if you want to retain all of your app data and device settings (some of which will change because of the updated iOS), I would certainly restore from the backup first.
If you find that to be problematic, you can always start all over again.

  • Change of ISP - need to deploy new IP address or DNS name to Active Sync phones

Greetings! We are changing ISP's tomorrow and we JUST finished deploying a bunch of new Galaxy S4's. Before, we were using Blackberrys and the thought never occurred to set up a DNS name for ActiveSync, we were just using the straight IP address. So
it just hit me that, when we switch over tomorrow evening, all the ActiveSync devices will cease to connect. NOT a good thing! Is there a way to push out a DNS name (to replace the IP address), to all the Active Sync clients via a policy update, script or
other mechanism? Otherwise we will have to contact each user and get them to manually update their accounts by entering the new DNS name. If anyone knows a method by which we can do this, please advise and thanks in advance!
    Mike
    Mike Vain

    Hello,
I agree with Ed's suggestion. After you change ISP, please change your DNS entries to the new IP address.
You can also change DNS A record for autodiscover to the new IP address.
The activesync will use autodiscover service to update profile.
