Should I convert my MTS (AVCHD) file to another file type before editing with elements 10

I know premiere elements 10 has project settings for working with AVCHD footage but after doing a bit of reading about how AVCHD (MTS) files are a lot harder for your computer to work with I'm thinking it might be better to convert my raw video files to another video file type before editing with premiere elements 10.
I have a reasonably good computer, but it's only a laptop with 361gb free memory, radeon graphics card, core i5 processor and 8GB ram.
If I should convert these files first what file type should I convert them to without loosing too much video quality and where can I find a program to convert them.
Many thanks
Sally

I have a reasonably good computer, but it's only a laptop with 361gb free memory, radeon graphics card, core i5 processor and 8GB ram.
My granddaughters and I have been using one of those to edit videos taken in (two) Sony and (one) Panasonic cameras.  The computer is a mid grade Toshiba laptop that is about three years old.  The cameras were purchased after the computer.  Our computer does not have a graphics card, but the other specs are about the same.
I know premiere elements 10 has project settings for working with AVCHD footage but after doing a bit of reading about how AVCHD (MTS) files are a lot harder for your computer to work with I'm thinking it might be better to convert my raw video files to another video file type before editing with premiere elements 10.
I didn't read that until after we had made videos.  The issue is the project preset that is set when you open a new project. If you guess wrong, PrE10 tells you so when you slide the first clip to the timeline.
There is confusion about AVCHD because there is a 1.0 and a 2.0.  The "high" setting for many cameras the last couple of years was 1080p60.  That did not become part of AVCHD until last July.  Now it is and is called 2.0.  PrE10 specs include AVCHD 1.0, so the 1080p60 is "officially" unsupported.   I didn't know that, so I tried a few presets when my files were 1080p60.  A preset of 720p60 worked best.
The "work harder" part primarily has to do with the preview window during editing.  If it is not going smoothly there will probably be a red line above the clip.  Pressing "Enter", getting a cup of coffee and patience will make the red line go away and the preview will be smoother.  The relationship between project presets and final output is a mystery.  My experience is that the presets have only to do with real time preview and little to do with output.  Output requires an entire re-encoding for the chosen viewing platform.  PrE10 seems to ignore the project presets, uses all the markers set in editing and builds the final products from scratch.
If I should convert these files first what file type should I convert them to without loosing too much video quality and where can I find a program to convert them.
Steve and Bill invest a lot of time here helping people like you and me.  But, my experience is that they are wrong.  I see no need to convert the files.  Conversion always has the risk of loosing a little picture quality.  PrE10 seems to handle AVCHD fine.  Let it do the final render using the actual source clips.
Sally, consider upgrading to version 11 where AVCHD 2.0 and 1080p60 is included.  I have.  Processing is a little smother.
Bill
PS:  Please, with all due respect to Bill and Steve who work hard here, I disagree based only on experience with 3 cameras and one computer.  User experience varies!

  • Do I need to pre-convert 1080i files to 1080p in Compressor before editing in a FCP X Timeline?

    I'm working on a project that's shot in 1080p, 23.97fps. A friend gave me some footage to add that was shot in 1080i, 29.97fps, on a Canon Vixia. FCP X will accept both, of course, as an event, and will even accept both in the same timeline, but what will happen if I try to edit or export them? Should I convert the 1080i to 1080p, 24fps. Final output only needs to be in 24fps.  Thanks for any help!!! I can't seem to find a straight answer on this.

    Difficult question to answer - if you convert it first, you'll be recompressing it - so you'll lose quality that way. I guess the best idea would be to de-interlace and save uncompressed.
    I'd be inclined to let FCP X take care of it but why not try a small section using both methods? If you can't see any difference in the result, I wouldn't worry.

  • Keynote 08 slide copying from one file to another file

    Hello from a MacBook Newbie,
    This is my first experience into the Mac world. I use Keynote every day. I also have a lot of PowerPoint files that I have converted to Keynote. I love the drag and drop feature.
    My problem is copying slides from one keynote file to another keynote file. The result is text box differences. When using PPT the files always seemed to keep all features intact on copying. Not so in Keynote. Examples are font size changes and text box spacing. The only way to resolve this is for laborious text box revising. I would understand if this were a PPT file converting to Keynote, however, the problem exists for me in copying Keynote slides into another Keynote file.

    Not sure if this tip can actually solve your issue but its a handy tip to have. When you press command+V it paste from the clipboard. Now if you press shiftoption+commandV it paste but use the current slide's formatting.

  • Problem copying a File to another File

    My routine to take one File's content and overwrite another File doesn't seem to work with xml. Could anyone explain this behavior?
         * replaces one file's content with another
         * @param sourceFile
         * @param file_to_overwrite
         * @throws java.io.FileNotFoundException
         * @throws java.io.IOException
        public static void overwriteFile(File sourceFile, File file_to_overwrite) throws FileNotFoundException, IOException {
            BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(sourceFile));
            BufferedWriter bw = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(file_to_overwrite));
            // overwrite destination file w/ source file
            String currentLine = new String();
            while ((currentLine = br.readLine()) != null) {
                bw.write(currentLine);
            br.close();
            bw.close();
        }when the overwritten file is opened in firefox I get this error
    XML Parsing Error: no element foundwhen I open up the two documents in notepad to visually inspect, I see some square shaped characters in the original,
    but not in the overwritten file.
    opening the documents in wordpad shows the overwritten file to be all on one line whereas the original shows the nested form of the xml document.
    Any thoughts or insight?

    thank you both for your replies
    FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(sourceFile);
    FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(file_to_overwrite);
    int ch;
    while ((ch = fis.read()) != -1) {
        fos.write(ch);
    fis.close();
    fos.close();this seems to be working perfectly except it cuts off the final tag, <\log>
    if i invoke another fos.write after the loop it inputs the value of -1 which is a "y"
    what's happening at the end of the loop here?

    Hi, Senthil.
    This Forum is not a general discussion forum.
    You don't believe that the InDesign SDK is a general purpose API. Do you?
    I think you must post issues like this where they belong, in this case in a Microsoft Word Forum.

  • How to link CS5 file to another file

    I've done a 12-page newsletter - complete with loads of images etc - using Indesign CS5 with links created by the TOC (Table of Contents) to each of the articles within the newsletter which will be a PDF.
    I have been advised that even as a PDF, the document will be far too costly to download on mobile devices/smartphones etc and that in order to circulate it to our mailing list, I need to produce a separate one-page Indesign CS5 file with links to the articles in my original piece of work.
    What I now want to do is create a separate file for the front page linking to the main document which will be on our website but having spent the past two days attempting to figure out how to do this myself and trawling through my books and around the internet, I'm none the wiser.
    I'd greatly appreciate advice/guidance on the simplest and easiest way to do this with a complete idiot's guide on the steps needed to do so.
    Many thanks

  • How to restrict to process a File until another File gets processed

    Hi Gurus,
    we have a sceario in our system where PI system picks unicode Text files which has product and Forecast data information which is also a Flat File (unicode Text) and updates in SNP System.
    For updating forecast information we need to have products to be set first in SNP system.. with out that Forecast signal are geting failedi in SNP system.
    in our scenarios, we receive both product and Forecast files at the same time..(which cant be changed) which has different Processes in PI and poll interval is set as 60 secs for both.
    But i want to restrict the Forecast Mapping Program process to be on hold for a certain time( say half an hour),so that Product mapping process will run sucessfully and updates all the products in the SNP System.
    Worst case is :
    Both files are getting updated at the same time, so that some Forecast signals are getting failed in SNP as product not found actually which is in the other file, because of that and we need to do lot of Recovery for those.. can some one please help me on this.
    any refernces on this is highly appreciated....!
    regards
    Sowseel

    Hi,
    you can use BPM if both the files have different processes. you can use switch steps with two
    transformation steps and use wait step in one of the branch.
    although 30 mins wait will consume much resources.
    thanks

  • Novice: How do you manually "move" one file above another file

    Hi,
    Sorry if this a FAQ, I'm an iTunes novice.
    I have a series of MP3s that need to stay/be played in sequence. Changing/renaming them will be a royal pain.
    The filenames are numeric, e.g.:
    1009x09
    1009x10
    1011x11
    The problem I have as I'm "Importing" them from the original MP3 CDs is that the file named "1010x10" keeps getting appended to the bottom of the list, rather than staying in sequence. This (so far) is the only file this is happening to.
    How can I "force it/move it" to stay in sequence?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    First, put them in a playlist.
    Make sure there is a little triangle in the space at the top of the number column. If not, click that spot to get the triangle.
    Now just grab any track you want and move it (by click and drag) up or down to where you want.

  • Copy content of a file to another file in 1 single method?

    Is there 1 single method in any java.io. classes that allows us to do this? Thanks.
    Example: someclass.copyFile ("c:\x.txt", "c:\y.txt");
    where content of file y.txt will be the same as x.txt

    No, you have to read the input file and write the output file separately (at least up to the last 1.4 release)

  • Saving file overwrites another file

    When i try to save a pdf file by clicking on "file, save as" (Using Pro 9, Windows 7) and attempt to put it in a folder, the cursor jumps to a file already in the folder and substitutes its name in the "save" dialogue box, the result being that it overwrites the file that is alreay there unless i rewrite the file name. No one in Mircorsoft seems to know what this is about. maybe you do? It only happens with Adobe, not with WORD, Below are the four steps in saving the file, and the last step is where it changes the file name from "40 Leading others....." to the name of a file already saved in the folder" EH Vaad...w
