Should I cut the power to my TC when I close down my iMac?

Hi,
Sorry to be asking such a dumb question on my first visit here.
My new Time Capsule and iMac seem to be working perfectly - I'm connected to the internet via a Virgin cable.
I'd just like to know if I'm going to experience any problems with reconnecting to the net if I disconnect the Time Capsule plug from the mains supply overnight?
I'm 'old school' when it comes to switching things off overnight and I'm also a complete novice when it comes to Apple stuff.
I did search the Forums before asking this question but couldn't seem to find a n answer. I also had a good look through the 'instructions' but, again, didn't see what I was looking for.
Perhaps I'm too stupid to own a computer - but any advice on the above would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading this far,
TonyM

Welcome to the discussions, tonym6!
Apple designed the TC to be powered up 24/7...that's why there is not an "off" switch on the device. Electronic components tend to last longer when they left on than when subjected to a constant on/off cycle.
The reason for this is that a rush of current runs through a device when it is powered on from an off state. There is actually more stress placed on the electronic components when you power it on repeatedly than there is if you simply leave the device on all the time.
You may get some varying opinions about this of course. If you are going to be away for a period of 3-4 days or on vacation, it might make sense to power off the Time Capsule during those times as a compromise if you don't want to leave it on all the time. It does consume a small amount of power, so I understand the need to save where possible.
Speaking of your iMac, the same thing applies. It will go into "sleep" mode after a period of non use, which keeps a trickle of power available to the device.

My wife downloaded an app. (couch to 5K) on to her IPad. Now when I try to access my ITunes account on my computer it locks up while trying to download the app. When I say lock up, I mean I have to cut the power to my computer to get it to boot back up.

    Hi CBrown5414,
You may need to disable automatic downloads of Apps to your computer.
The information in the articles below should help you with this.

    Hi David,
I got a gigadesign 1.467 single processor upgrade for my tired 'ol G4 466 about a year ago. I paid around $450 at the time and now they have a 1.8 single for $299!
I have zero bad things to say about the upgrade. Easy to install (although a little nerve wracking!) and it's been running hassle free ever since. It's given me the juice to take advantage of Space Designer as well as keeping up with my CPU sucking Native Instruments software.
I did plenty of research as far as compatibility before comitting to the upgrade and have had zero issues.
Obviously a new computer is the next step but that processor upgrade has kept me chugging along enough to stay in the game thus far.

  • Does it "hurt" the timecapsule if i cut the power every night?

i use my timecapsule as a wlan rooter and do not want to have the wlan active over night. since there is no on/off i simply cut the power in the evening. do you think this will hurt the timecapsule over a longer period?
    thanks

Wireless does not continuously transmit.. when you don't actually pass packets over wireless, the signal is just a short poll, every few seconds.. a burst to tell wireless devices I am here. The actual level of signal is extremely low..
If you are concerned about security.. WPA2 Personal with 20 character key.. full combo of upper, lower and digit alphanumeric.. will not be broken.
If you are concerned for safety.. the power rf output of the dect phone is 10x greater than wifi. The radio and communications signals in your house from mobile phone towers for instance could be greater.
If you are concerned for power and environment.. the actual standby power demand of the TC is around 8W. The problem is shutting it down every night produces expansion and contraction issues. Replacement of the TC faster than normal counteracts any benefit gained for power saved. But that is the point we don't know.. will it break or how fast. Hard to know.

  • When should I use the power adapter?

I just installed a wireless router. Should I use the power adapter when I'm not going to use the Macbook for several hours? Does the Macbook drain the battery when it is shut down or sleeping?

When should I use the power adapter?
Whenever you are near a power outlet. Not 100% of the time, of course (you have to flex the battery sometimes) but as often as possible.
Should I use the power adapter when I'm not going to use the Macbook for several hours?
If you are near an outlet, yes.
Does the Macbook drain the battery when it is shut down or sleeping?
When sleeping, it drains a negligible amount.

Chances are, there was a signficant power surge or voltage fluctuation just before the power went out. This type of thing can cause the AirPort Extreme to reset back to default settings.
If this occurs, your only option is re-configure the device again, just as you did originally.
In order to improve your chances this next time this happens, (especially if you live in an area where thunderstorms are severe), a good quality surge suppressor / voltage limiting power strip will really help, and may save you the entire device or a nearby computer next time something like this occurs.

However, when I signed into the appstore with my account I have used with all of my Mac products, it now said I had to purchase each program, like iPhoto, iMovie, ect. seperate. I have already logged in and out of my account and called the "free" part of tech support. How can I reslove this issue?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you really have a new MacBook, iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand come with the Mac for free.
As you see their price at the Mac App Store, it's clear that there's a problem with your MacBook. Simply return it if you purchased it less than 14 days ago and you will receive a new MacBook

Click here for information; if the computer beeps three or fewer times, remove and reinsert the computer's RAM. If it beeps four or more times, it needs to be repaired. If it's a G5, it will ignore RAM modules that aren't part of a matching pair.

I have an app that I started to download. It is stuck in "downloading" and I cannot get it off my iPad. The "x" won't appear when I hold down on the app icon.

Boot off your iPad and turn it back on.  Hold the button on the top until the "slide to power off" shows up. When you boot back up it will be gone and then you can re-install the app.

  • My computer is running slow after Yosemite install -but in the Mail program, when I open an email and then open the attachment -all is good -when I close the attachment the Mail program goes away, and I have to reopen it in my Dock -every time -been

My computer is running slow after Yosemite install -but in the Mail program, when I open an email and then open the attachment -all is good -when I close the attachment the Mail program goes away, and I have to reopen it in my Dock -every time.

I tried this, but no luck. I went to Previous System>Users. There is nothing inside the "Users" folder, so I hit a dead end.
I can find my new e-mails -- those that came in since I re-installed the system -- in my NEW system (which I did to see if I was correctly understanding the advice), by going to Users>Home>Library>Mail>POP account name>Inbox.
Let me add a new question: I am running PhotoShop C3. It opens OK, and I can use it, but when it opens I get this message: "One or more files for Adobe Application Support folder are missing. Please re-run the PhotoShop installer."
I don't like re-installing working programs if I can avoid it, because it always seems to lead to other issues. Any idea what files are missing, and where it/they might be in the Previous System folder?
    thanks

  • Cut the power to my iMac and now it will not complete rebooting when trying to restart

    Please can anybody help me?

When this happens to me, I like to work from the outside in.  Booting in safe mode can fix issues with with certain things not loading during boot.  Resetting the SMC can fix issues like the wrong boot volume specified or a non-standard startup drive.
I like to start with booting from a USB or in your case the install DVD (I see 10.6.7 if your sig).  From the install menu you can use disk utility to check out your boot volume and repair it.
If you can describe what you see when you reboot it would help people understand how far you are getting.  Also, do you boot to a login screen or straight to the desktop?  Did the power go out while booting or while working?

My 17" MacBook Pro, mid-2010, refuses to come out of sleep. It has never had a problem before, even after installing Mountain Lion. It doesn't respond to the power on switch or any keyboard activity. Help?

    BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:
    kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128
I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps?
