Should I disable Java?

See this article in the Sydney Morning Herald. I've seen nothing in the UK press about this weakness. Why weren't we told of this by Apple? I fear the overwhelming rush for profits is blurring the Apply/Customer relationship. Maybe its time to move on......

If you don't need it, and odds are you don't, turn it off.  You can disable in the browser you are using and/or more globally using the Java Preferences too (in Utilities), General tab (uncheck the checkboxes).

    When i browse, randomly, (in the avast web page checker shows it as good with green mark) the browser it self redirects to unwanted adult site, and when i close click the next time, i get the original page. When i browse through the firefox history, it gives index index and then redirects to the page. It is sheer unwanted browser.

    Is this enough? or is there permanent solution.

    Interestingly enough, I had the same thing happen '''today''' when I clicked on a search result in Google. It hijacked my request and redirected me to this same bioderma(.)name(.)tr server. It only happened once though, and I cannot seem to reproduce it.
    May I ask what kind of plugins you are using? And most importantly, what DNS provider are you using. (That is, do you happen to be using OpenDNS?)

    Do I need Java 8 or should I disable it? What happens if i disable it? And what is the difference between Java and Java Runtime?

    There's no difference. They're both runtime plug-ins (they run when an app calls for Java functions).
    You only need Java if you either have Java apps on your Mac that won't run without having it installed, or you use trusted web sites that require Java to function (getting fewer and far between). Otherwise, you have no need for it at all.

  • Should I "disable" the older versions of Java Console prior to version 6.0.24?

    While exploring the new features of Firefox v4.0 I discovered, in the Add-ons Manager, that all of the previous versions of Java Console, back to v6.0.05, were still enabled. Should I disable all versions prior to the most recent?

    I'm quite sure that it is not possible to extricate Java from MacOSX. When installed, bits and pieces of it go everywhere and to locate individual items and remove them is next to impossible.
    That said, I believe it has been attempted, but whether successfully, I can't say.
    Reason I know this is because I ran into problem with latest version of JRE on MacOSX machine operating as FileMaker server. Latest version of JRE caused java-based administration console to break.

  • HT202447 Why doesn't Apple patch Leopard, 10.5, other than to say "disable Java"?

    Why doesn't Apple discuss what it is going to do with 10.5 (Leopard) other than to say "disable Java?"   Why doesnt Apple support its product, i.e., computers running 10.5 still COVERED UNDER APPLE CARE?   Why must we disable Java and wait (and pay) for a Leoparad to Snow Leopard upgrade disk to arrive by SnailMail?  Apple support your products especially when we own over $15,000 of your products.  I used to be your biggest fan, suggesting to everyone who would listen that they should "switch over."  Why are you ignoring us, still covered by Apple Care????????????

  • How to disable Java from OS X

    Need help as to removing Java from iMac & MacBook-Pro.

    There are rumors of another vulnerability that has not yet been fixed. See:
    Did Java just fall down again?!
    Because of the numerous times that Java vulnerabilities have been discovered and exploited over the last year, I definitely recommend disabling Java in your web browser if at all possible. If you haven't installed Java on Mac OS X 10.8, you don't have Java, so you're safe. However, if you have, you should disable Java in your web browser. That alone is sufficient protection.
    Note that running in a non-admin account will not protect you! All that will do is prevent certain types of infection, but a lot of recent Mac malware has used techniques that do not require admin access. Flashback, for example, was fully capable of infecting a standard user account through a Java exploit, without needing the user to do anything at all.
    Also, note that there have been some recommendations to use ClickToPlugin to block Java... however, if you read that plugin's site carefully, you'll note that it cannot block all Java applets, and is thus not good protection against Java exploits.

  • Disabling Java on W2K is that OK?

    When I travel its with an old laptop running W2K. FF has disabled Java for my "safety" (shades of MS). how much do I need Java? Note the problem isn't limited to Java.

    You most likely have a very old version of Java. Uninstall your old version of Java (Start, Control Panel, add remove programs) and then try to install the newest one from [http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=63691 http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=63691].
    You are also running a very very ancient version of Firefox that has many known security holes. I would upgrade to Firefox 12 ASAP to keep your computer more secure (Windows 2000 is an insecure OS anyway, but any bit helps)
    You also should know that Mozilla will be dropping support for Windows 2000 when Firefox 13 is released. Firefox 12 will be the last version of Firefox to receive any updates. • How do I disable Java on Mac OS X 10.5.8

    Do I need to and how do I disable Java??

    If you do not require Java it is best to leave it disabled in Safari and any other browser you may use.
    In Safari, make Safari Preferences look like this:
    Your version of Safari for Leopard may look a little different, but find the checkbox for "Enable Java" and un-check it.
    JavaScript is unrelated to Java and you may leave it enabled.
    Also, if you have a Java Runtime installed, disable it. To do that go to your Utilities folder and open Java Preferences.
    If you see the following dialog box
    ... then click Not Now and you're finished.
    If you see the following instead
    ... then un-check that box.

    I've been going entirely on the almost universal statement that installing Lion does not install Java by default. I'm very aware of the fact that older versions of OS X actually rely on the use of Java for some system functions, but I've been told that is no longer the case. If that were so, then there is no need for any Java to be present, yet you say it is there and you aren't the only one who has told me that.
    But exactly how much Java is installed by default? Obviously not enough to use it for browsing. In the days of the Java 6 Preferences app, it used to alert you that Java was not installed and offer to do so.  What happens with standalone apps like CrashPlan in Lion that require Java, do they have enough, by default, to run?
    The only Java component missing in these OSs is the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Peruse those installations, looking in these directories, and be enlightened:
    /Applicatons/Utilities/->Java Preferences.app
    /Library/Java/
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/->JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
    /System/Library/CoreServices/->
            Jar Launcher.app
            Java Web Start.app
            JavaVersion.plist
    /System/Library/Frameworks->
            JavaFrameEmbedding.framework
            JavaScriptCore.framework
            JavaVM.framework
    /System/Library/LaunchAgents/->
    com.apple.java.InstallOnDemand.plist
    com.apple.java.updateSharing.plist
    /System/Library/Java
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/->
            JavaApplicationLauncher.framework
            JavaLaunching.framework
    to name a few, but probably not all the Java components installed with OS Xs. Then, stop saying Java's not installed, when only the JRE component is missing.
    There has been speculation from some that perhaps it migrated from an older system or that Lion was installed on top of the older system. There's also some confusion these days about what actually constitutes a "clean install".
    AFAICT, it's speculated wrongly. As for the clean install, I define it to occur when the user wipes the drive, installs the OS, sets up everything, and then installs all 3rd-party software. Then, the installation is clean. If there's any migration involved, then it's not clean. i've not done one for over ten years and my OSs started with 9.2->Jaguar->to the current three.

    When should I use static variable and when should not? Java essential

    Static => same value for all instances of the class.
    Non-static => each instance can have its own value.
    Which you need in which circumstances is completely up to you.

  • Should I learn JAVA or C#?

    Should I learn JAVA or C#? Or...both of them!?

    For the record, C# does not support multiple
    inheritance. It is very much like Java except that it
    has a few extra goodies thrown in. For my tastes, it
    is not as pure as Java, but it is an improvement over
    C++ and it has a few things, like operator
    overloading, that would look nice in Java. Hey! Wait!
    Stop! Stop the tomatoes! Please!Ugghh, operator overloading. What a nasty nasty thing that was. Why change something you have been seeing since you were in diapers to mean something else. + should alwalys be plus because we have all grown up knowing that. Imagine if you had a child and for the fun of it you taught him growing up that his left hand was his right hand,think of all the confusion he would have when he is learning how to drive and his instructor tells him to take a left. Even though he may learn that what he believes is left is now right he will always first think of his left hand as his right.
