It shouldn't matter. If iTunes promps you to update your iPhone when you plug it in than you have a new enough version and should be totally fine.

OK. If both of you are Windows 7. Make sure you go to Windows update (START button, type in Windows Update). Check for updates and update whatever that are available. (especially Microsoft .NET Framework 4 )
After that see if you still get this error message.
The last resort would be to unistall and reinstall the whole thing.
Follow the steps below:
1. Go to Microsoft website to fix install and Unistall problems. Click "Run now" from Fix it to remove all iTunes & related installer files:

Follow the instructions from Apple article listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 to remove all components
3. Reboot your computer. Next, download iTunes from here:http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and install from scratch -
I too cannot download latest itunes version. Apple needs to respond and fix what is certainly a software defect. Am seeing all of the same error messages including MSCVR80.dll is missing from computer. For Windows 7 a "Error 7 (Windows errror 126) appears. How do you get Apples's attention. It is impossible to link up with real support from their website?
Remove old Apple programs, and use Explorer web-browser. (Firefox or Chrome will not do)

You can triple-click a line to select all of it, then press Ctrl+C to copy, switch to the command box and click the icon at the top left of the window to access the paste menu. Which components you have depends on whether you've unpacked the 32-bit or the 64-bit installer.
The log files might provide further clues as to what is going wrong.

Have you figured this out yet? I am having the sane trouble and can't get it to load either. I updated my older MacBookPro yesterday. I downloaded Leopard and then Lion. I currently have iTunes 10. I have a brand new iPhone 4S 16G, and a brand new iPad 2 3g 64g. I went with the 16g phone because I decided to use iCloud and not store all my songs and photos in the phone. However, now I can't seem to get iTunes 10.5 so the iCloud is just an idea at this point.
When I use the upgrade to 10.5 link on Apple's home page, my screen flashes and says "Upload successful." then I go into About iTunes and see that I'm still 10. There is no iCloud in my menu and I'm stuck.
I'm a regular PC user and am trying to convert myself over to Mac once and for all. So I'm early in the learning curve on how this all works. -

Downloaded latest iTunes with iPad hooked up. Using iTunes for windows. After download and install, rebooted when requested but lost monitor when it came back up. When playing a video I have downloaded from iTunes I get the message "This Movie Cannot be played on this machine". The weird thing is that I downloaded the film from iTunes and while it was downloading I was watching it with my kids on my IMac. Once it had finished downloading I went with them to the living room Tao carry on watching on our apple tv. The apple TV wouldn't play it and said I needed to authorise my Pc, then the IMac gave the message above and I haven't been able to play it since. All my other downloaded films play. I have the same problem. Been trying to find some answers, but not a lot of info about this. It seems to happen only when:
- itunes library is stored remote (NAS or external HD)
- starting a movie/show before download has finished will make it fail next time you try to start

I have the same issues. I keep getting a "network error" even though my connections are fine. I have installed Bootcamp fine on another Macbook, but am having major issues with my brand new one. I have read the support forums where they say to keep trying because the servers are notoriously slow, but this seems a little ridiculous. Hope I can get some help as well.
