Should I download OS X Mavericks?

Last time I downloaded Mavericks, It was a nightmare Waited hours for the download only to have it restart every 15 seconds after I logged into my user. Fixed the problem but had to wipe out my computer! Should I re download? I know a precaution to take would be to back up my computer but I have no idea how to do that plus I don't want to spend money on any external drive or whatever.

If you don't want to do what is necessary to backup, then you risk further loss of data. An external backup drive is a requirement for backing up. Your decision.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
     drive being backed up.
3. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least double the
capacity of the drive(s) it backs up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
  1. Carbon Copy Cloner
  2. Get Backup
  3. Deja Vu
  4. SuperDuper!
  5. Synk Pro
  6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
  1. Cool Drives
  2. OWC
  3. WiebeTech
  4. Firewire Direct
  5. California Drives
  6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Is downloading OS X Mavericks a good idea for my mac book pro?

I have heard alot of controversial information about downloading OS X Mavericks. Ideally I would like to download it but I am afraid of losing everything on my macbook. Should I download it anyways? or not? or back up my mac and then download? if so, how would I go about backing it up?

That's a very logical question, and yes... that's exactly what you want to do.
Get an external USB hard drive. They're cheap on Amazon, or you can often catch a good sale somewhere else. I'd start by formatting it with Disk Utility as 1 partition, GUID, and Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) NOT case sensitive. If you don't know how on that part, just write back and someone will walk you through it.
The other thing you want is Carbon Copy Cloner. It's not free, but unlike its competition it will also copy the recovery partition. Use CCC to make an exact copy of your existing drive before you install Mavericks. That way if you have any problems it's very easy to go back.
By the way, good thinking. A lot of people don't consider this and it's pretty hard to go back without doing this procedure.

  • How do I see the downloaded percentage of Mavericks?

Last night I started downloading Mavericks but accidentally shut down my computer mid download. When I restarted my computer today I tried to resume the download by right clicking the Mavericks icon on the dock but the download wouldn't restart. So I thought I'd get rid of the Mavericks icon from my dock and start again from scratch.
So now tried re-downloading Mavericks from the App Store and now there isn't an icon on the dock telling me how far along my download is. However, according to the App store it is downloading but there's no status bar about how far along it is. I'm not entirely sure if it's downloading either. How do I see the status of the download/restore the Mavericks icon in the dock during the download? And approximately how long will it take? I'm currently on 10.6.8 on my iMac.
    Any help would be appreciated!

The download time will be dependant on your download speed from your ISP. It's a large file (5.31GB, I believe) so, with 60 Mbps speeds that I have, it can take up to 45 minutes (and that's depending on how responsive Apple's servers are at any given time).
You should be able to see the download taking place in your Launchpad icon - and in the Mac App Store as well. I'm a bit confused about what you call the "Mavericks" icon as there should be no Mavericks icons in your Dock when you're downloading.
Try the download again - check your MAS window and your Lanchpad icon for progress.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Download os x mavericks

i have a late 2008 mac pro model. trying to download os x mavericks and won't let me. i meet all the requirements to download but unable to. why is this?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
What error message do you get?
If the Mac App Store tells you that your Mac is not compatible, open System Information (in /Applications/Utilities) and check Model Identifier. It should be "MacPro3,1" or higher. If not, your Mac is not compatible with OS X Mavericks

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Hello! i downloaded OS X Mavericks on my mac .since then my computer didn't restart properly. My desktop image doesn't appear after logging in and i'm unable to shut it down.

Hello! I downloaded OS X Mavericks on my Mac and my pc didn't restart properly.my desktop image doesn't appear and i can't shut down my pc. what can i do ?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Should I download Aperture 3.6 compatibility update before or after downloading Yosemite?

I'm running Mavericks OS on my late 2009 MacBook.
I would like to download Yosemite but I'm worried about my photos on Aperture 3. Should I download the Aperture 3.6 compatibility update before or after downloading Yosemite.? Thanks.

I bought Aperture 3 from the App Store some time ago but got it updated regularly
Does that mean, you are now running Aperture 3.5.1? Then you should be seeing Aperture on the Purchases tab of the App Store and your Aperture license has been associated with your Apple ID.

  • HT5293 download OS X Mavericks

I have been trying to download OS X Mavericks, it runs through the whole system of down loading (which I might add is very slow) but for some reason when I check it in the app store under purchases it says it as not down loaded, and then starts the whole proccedure again. Can anyone explain what X11 is?
Also I am very new to my mac so would be grateful of an idots guide to my problem.
Hope someone will offer me some advice PLEASE!

Don't be concerned that Mavericks is listed in your Purchases to Download after you've apparently downloaded it. Mine says, the same even though I downloaded and installed Mavericks some time ago - it remains there should you need to download it again in the future.
Does the following not appear to be the case on your Mac?
What should happen is that it downloads to your Applications folder as a file called 'Install OS X Mavericks' (or similar). Normally after download you are automatically presented with the installer screen to run by clicking on the 'install' button. On successful installation the installer file self-deletes from the Applications folder, so it's a good idea to make a copy of the 5.3gb installer file before running it as it may save another huge download later.
Check to see if you have the installer in Applications. Also if you go to the Apple Menu>About this Mac, what version of OSX does it say you are running?
What is X11: https://support.apple.com/kb/ht5293 (you can probably ignore it, but I don't think you can delete it).

It's very sad that we Apple customers should have to justify why we want an Apple operating system. I don't expect Apple to continually support older versions (except for security updates - Microsoft supported security updates for XP for a decade, for crying out loud), but we should be able to do whatever the heck we want with our computers. We bought them.
I don't think it is sad at all to ask why someone thinks they want to do something.
So frequently they are wrong or think that their solution will solve their problem when in fact it will not or there a much simpler solution that we can offer once we know what their problem is instead of their proposed solution.
Besides I didn't see where anyone ask you to join this discussion anyway.

  • I downloaded OS X Mavericks...

I downloaded OS X Mavericks on my MacBook Pro and now iPhoto is disabled. Is there a fix?

You must update iPhoto to latest 64 bit upgrade version on the Mac App Store.
Older versions of iPhoto no longer work on OS X Mavericks.
Older versions of iPhoto do not work with Mavericks because the older applications are not written for a fully 64 bit operating system architecture.
When updating then launching iPhoto, iPhoto is going to rebuild your existing iPhoto Libary to be compatible with the new iPhoto app.
This means that your iPhoto library will no longer be accessible to older version of the OS, generally, and no longer accessible to older versions of iPhoto, specifically.
If you want to retain your iPhoto library in its current unaltered state, you need to go into your Pictures folder, create a new folder calked something like Previous iPhoto library, them hold down the Option Key while dragging out copy of your iPhoto Library( already in your Pictures folder) into this new folder.
Confirm that the duplicate library has been put into this folder.
You can choose to leave this where it is untouched and/or now save this library to burned CD/DVD and/or save another copy of this unconverted iPhoto library to a Mac formatted, high capacity USB Flash Drive, and/or purchase an external hard drive to use as a storage medium or backup solution and store a copy of the unaltered iPhoto library there.
This way you end up with multiple copies of your unconverted iPhoto library in case you still need these to work with an older version of OS X and older version of iPhoto.
You should have a high capacity external hard drive for data backups, anyways. No computer should be without some major backup plan and hardware setup.
    Good Luck!

  • Os10.09 should I download it

I am wonfering if I should download 10.09 Maverick, or should I leave well enough alone ??

Whatever you decide, have a good backup (preferably a clone) of your nice working system.   Really, don't skip this step even if it means waiting until you get an external drive.
After that, Mavericks has some nice features and integrates well with iDevices.  I have my whole family on it now that 10.9.2 has been released.
I have installed Mavericks many ways on several different Mac's and I've had the best luck with the following methods....in order
    1) Clean install followed by manually adding data back (iCloud has made this much easier than before)
    2) Install directly over an existing Mountain Lion installation (one that works well and has no flakey problems)
    3) Clean install followed by using setup assistant or migration assistant
Number 3 has been the most problematic for me.  Sometimes it works, sometimes you get really messed up file ownerships and permissions.  Number 3 is not a clean install eventhough many think it is.   I really have stopped using this method all together.

I downloaded OS X Mavericks over the weekend and it has made my Macbook very slow. Browsing has become slow. Mail hardly moves. 2) if you can't live without the app, then at least research it to see if it is compatible with Mavericks, and make sure you have the latest version.
