Should I exchange my freezing iMac?

Hi I just got my 24" iMac 2 days ago. Yesterday the iMac froze 3 times.. .twice within 5 mintues! and twice today already. Now I know Apple is aware of this issue but I am also aware this does not happen on every iMac, so should I send this back into Apple for an exchange? What did you do about your freezing iMac?

First of all I can't believe Apple is letting this go on as long as they have. People buying new computers and right out of the box having issues is unacceptable.
I bought the first computer a week after they were released and had no problems until the Software update 1.1 was released then as soon as I downloaded it I crashed and froze all time after that. After nearly two weeks of phone calls back and forth with Apple I was told it was a hardware problem and that they needed to swap out the graphics card.
To say the least I was a little mad seeing how this was a brand new computer so I fired off a angry email to Steve Jobs. The very next day I got a call from a woman saying she was from the Apple executive offices and they were very sorry about my troubles and they would replace the computer. The next night I brought the computer home I turned it on, downloaded the updates and an hour later it froze. So at that point I removed the update called Apple again and told them the issue. And then unbelievably they told me to put the update back on the computer. So once again like an idiot I did it and had the same problems.
After that I said enough, I erased and reinstalled did not put the 1.1 update on my new computer but I went out on the web and downloaded the 1.0 update put that back on and everything has been stable ( I did have one questionable crash in the last 21/2 weeks which does lead me to think there is some kind of hardware issue which hopefully will be solved with a newer update. Though I don't want to be the first one to try it.) Also two days after I did this Apple made their "small number of computers" announcement.
So to cut to the chase if you can get your computer stable (maybe by taking the 1.1 update off and putting 1.0 on. Though a lot of people are saying that is not working for them either) I would stick with what you have. If not I would not put up with constant freezing.
I'm not buying the whole "small numbers" thing myself but thats just my opinion.

  • Should i shut down my imac

should i shut down my imac or leave it running all the time?

You should only shut it down when leaving the computer unattended for more than a few days or working inside the case. Otherwise, sleeping it is enough.

  • Will Apple ever address freezing iMacs

this is driving me nuts. i'm getting a run around.
will apple ADDRESS the freezing iMac issue properly? not some cheap software update that DOESN'T work.

Not likely. It is up to you to call AppleCare and request a repair under warranty. Info and phone numbers would have been included in the original box - the same are available online.
There will be no recall since there is not a hazardous condition.

  • How much RAM should I install for new iMAC ?

    Hi,
How much RAM should I install for new iMAC* running Logic Studio? It comes with 4 GB - is that enough? (can you run in 64 bit mode..)
    *(The 21.5" 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo)
Also, I was planning to get the stock 1 TB Hard Drive & save projects to an external drive.
    Does that sound reasonable?
    Any other recommendations?
    Thanks,
    Wm Heart

Unless you plan on running huge projects with enormous sampled instruments, 4 GB will do (very) fine. And your disk plan is sound. Choose an external Firewire drive, rather than USB. FW is easier on the CPU and can handle more tracks than USB.
What you should get, instead of more memory, is a (24 bit) external audio interface, if you want to do serious recording and playback.
What type of audio interface you'ld need, depends on what you want to do with it and of course your budget. From decent to brilliant costs from roughly 100 to several 1,000's of europounddollars. Avoid the 16 bit ones, they're worse than the inbuilt audio chip of your iMac. You can recognize 16 bit Audio Interfaces (in webshops) by their prize (often under 100€£$) and the lack of mention of their bitrate.

  • If I download/rent a movie on iPad 1 should it show on my iMac or in my library

If I download/rent a movie on iPad 1 should it show on my iMac or in my library of Apple TV

A movie rented on an iPad cannot be transferred to another device. If you purchase a movie, though, it should be transferred to your iMac when you sync the iPad in iTunes. You can then play the movie in your Apple TV.
Or if it's an Apple TV 2nd or 3rd generation, you should be able to play a purchased or rented movie through the Apple TV via AirPlay.

  • What should I do if my imac has a virus and my email has been hacked

what should I do if my imac has a virus and my email has been hacked

when you say your email has been hacked... Do you mean that people are telling you that they are getting emails from you that you never sent?
It is possible that it is a virus, but also it could have been due to a phishing scam.
Another possibility could be that someone is using a script or program that uses your email as an Alias (Mask) to cover up who the email is really being sent from.
As far as what to do if you think you have a virus, just make sure your software is up to date by clicking the () in the upper left and then click 'Software Update'.
You can get virus scanner software, and antivirus programs as well as Rudegar said as well.
Is anything else behaving abnormally other than your email?

  • Belle, E7, Exchange mail, freeze, hang

    Severe problem with Belle.
email acess is most of what I need; don't have many applications, don't have any running.
Have an Exchange mail account but if I reply to or send any message the screen becomes totally unresponsive.
Physical buttons still work, phone is not completely frozen - just can't do *anything* with it.
Power cycle restores functionality until email is accessed again.
    Phone is basically useless now.
Also: Is this related to Lync? I will never have any use for Lync but it always runs despite unchecking 'run at start', and it seems to hang waiting for a Lync server service that doesn't exist.
I love the idea of Lync but my comany doesn't use it, so... uninstall....
ETA: Uninstalled Lync, problem persists. Replied to an email and now the phone is inoperable.

How long? The answer is 11 days.  Worked fine until this morning, now entering Exchange messages freezes the touchscreen.
A hard reset every 11 days is not going to work for me.  No other Nokia phone in sight suits my needs, so this will be the end of the line for us.
Really hate all the alternatives. Walled garden iOS or cludgy invasive Android.  Would have bought a 950 in a blink.

  • Should I update my 2011 iMac?

Should I update my 2011 iMac from Mac OS X 10.6.6 to 10.6.8? it of course would be a combined update. Will it give me any problems?

How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and later.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. Download and install update(s) if updating:
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).
    E. To upgrade from an earlier major version:
Purchase the requisite installer package (Snow Leopard for example.)
    Boot from the installer DVD.
    Choose the install option:
    None required for Snow Leopard.
Archive and Install for versions prior to Snow Leopard.
Updates should not be a problem.

  • Solved freezing iMac

I thought I would post a separate thread as my experience may get lost in all the other threads about freezing iMacs.
I too like a lot of other people here suffered (sorry to those still suffering) my iMac freezing. It was not tied down to doing anything in particular it just did it when it liked.
After 3 phone calls to apple support and being refered to the higher level of support twice I told apple support that with all due respect I am going round in circles talking to you and will be taking it to the apple store in Birmingham.
Believe it or not but it didn't freeze once in the apple store, I asked the genius after he had spent half an hour on it that if it freezes again it has to be hardware. He confirmed this (not too loudly I may add).
On getting back home the first thing it did was freeze. I phoned up apple care again (no. 4) and basically said to them in no uncertain terms that they will repair or replace it. After trying to fob me off to the higher level of support again, they came back and informed me that there was a footnote on my file that said send it straight for repair.
Well after 3 weeks (busy local repair centre) I received my iMac in full working order; repair diagnosis - new graphics card. It has now been a week and it has operated flawlessly.
To those of you still having problems I would suggest that you ignore emailing them as I have still yet to receive a reply. But just keep phoning them and eventually you will get you just deserves.
Sorry to make you sit and read this but I just wanted to tell my story.
Now, a very happy iMac user and fully updated.

Hi bud ive just posted a thread about just taking delivery of a new imac..
When did you get yours fixed.. and could it be.. that my imac may have the same or a newer batch of graphics cards that may fix it?
I will be seriously urinated off if i have to send back a brand new £1500 computer.. like all of us i guess!!
I knew i shouldnt of googled new aluminium imac problems.
On another note i've also got an oldschool g4 emac arriving (strange ebay deal..!) so who knows where my next reply could be from, it arrives a week today

  • What should I do with an iMac that shuts down unexpectedly, freezes in an application and is difficult to reboot intermittently.

In the last three day the iMac has unexpectantly shut down, stopped responding, posted four panic reports and has been very difficult to reboot without several attempts.  But then will go through a day without any problems.  This morning it just stopped doing anything.  Unplugged it from the wall, waited several hours and then rebooted without a problem.  Go figure!   What are my next steps??

If you have AppleCare, call them up & let them deal w/it.

  • Should I exchange my I Book G4 for the New Intel IMAC

I just bought an G4 i book on 12-31 and maybe i should have waited untill after the conference to get a mac computer, but i really wanted the G4, and i been wanting to switch from PC to mac for a while, I guess i just chose the wrong time. I am not sure what to do now, should i take back my ibook and get an imac? I feel really dumb about getting the G4, even though it is great. I know they are going to come out with an intel one this year. Can anyone help me out and let me know what i should do? Any advice would be great. Thanks
    I Book G4   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

    Hi Daniel,
To your response about the programs not being able to work with the new Intels is true for the most part.Apple Developer Connection for a long time has had links on how to change program's code into Universal Binary. Many companies have switched their programs over to Universal Binary. Microsoft Office is available to work on the PowerMac. The PowerMac also works with FileMaker Pro and Quicken. I don't use MS Office or anything made by MS because I have iWorks '05, which is even better. It is fully compatible will MS Office.
I am getting a PowerMac solely because I need a faster and more powerful machine. I have 8000 photos (2000 on iBook 6000 on iMac) and I can't fit and edit them all at the same time. I need the portability and the power to run the "pro" applications.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon
PS I wouldn't say upgrade it to an Intel Mac unless you need to. The new Intel computers come with MS Office Test Drive, so I am guessing it works

  • Test for freezing iMacs

    Hello.
I am awaiting a new iMac, and though I realise it's a relatively rare condition, like many others I am anxious not to get a freezing one. I think it would be great if people could post "tests" for people to run on their new iMacs - i.e. processes or applications or combinations of applications that seem to bring on a freeze. This way, folks taking possession of new iMacs can subject their machines to some questioning as soon as they get them - and therefore remain within their 14 day return/replacement rights should patterns of freezing arise.
So, could a few people with freezing problems perhaps list some issues that commonly (or, even better: reliably) cause a freeze?
    Thanks

Here's what I did (all at the same time):
    1. I ran iTunes visualizer with the window open all the way so it was as close to full screen as I could get without hitting CTRL-F.
    2. I played a mini-movie in PhotoBooth that I had recorded earlier. It was 2 minutes long.
    3. I opened iPhoto, selected a photo, blew it up, and continuously rotated it using CTRL-R.
All of that, and I randomly went to my screensaver (Arabesque) and put it in sleep mode and woke it abruptly.
I've been testing it this way for a few hours and haven't had one glitch yet. A couple of slow-downs, but no video problems.
    Hope this helps.

  • Time Machine freezes iMac

Time Machine was working fine with external LaCie 500 USB drive. Since installing Mac updates on 11/5/07, when I open Time Machine--2 finder windows open and the whole computer freezes. Is this because Fire Vault was turned on during the software update??

It happens to  me  on my iMac as well using Lacie Porsche 500Gb. Can't use Time Machine. Every time I try  to launch TM it goes till a point where only the cursor is alive but nothing else. Sometime is half the way to the full screen in TM, sometime stars start  to glow...and then the cold universe freeze.
But the problem I have now I had it before  when I was using a 2nd partition on my iMac
    Exactly same problem.
Freezing all the time  using TM. I was afraid to have one of those iMac with freezing problem
but it never freezes any other time.
I guess using a Lacie is not the real problem. The problem is TM consuming probably too much memory. Spotlight doesn't remember I excluded TM disk from indexing and also Tm +Spotlight is deadly for Leopard.
Apple should do something and soon.
I feel I'm back at the time of classic, system 7: freezing and restarting,  freezing and restarting .

  • Cannot load exchange email on Imac

    Hello,
I am new to mac computers but have an Iphone and a ipad, both of which i have no problems connecting to the exchange server.  My IT guy said Imac cannot connect to the exchange server for mail.  Why would this be?  Seems like it should be able to do it.  I've tried every which way but nothing works.  Is my IT guy right?  Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Maybe yes, maybe no... probably no.
    But...
What version of Exchange server does your organization use? Are you using Mac Mail (what version of OS X) or Entourage, or Outlook (what version of MS Office is installed if any)?

  • The sound stops and freezes iMac

    Regards
For some time my iMac stops playing sounds, such as iTunes, games and movies. When that happens, the computer freezes momentarily, which is annoying.
I noticed that the problem seems to be software, not hardware, but I'm not clear what will be, because I do not notice anything strange in Activity Monitor or when Disk Utility repair permissions.
Any idea or solution for this case?

Back up all data before making any changes.
If you've installed something called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and reboot. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
If you've installed an equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and reboot.
If there's no improvement, or if you're not aware of having installed anything that fits the description, post again.
