Should I fix or buy new?

Hey,
A few weeks ago I was charging my iPod Mini when I realized it had gotten really HOT. The charger part actually got burnt a little bit (I can see the black part on it) and it smelled like burning electronics.
Anyway, before this I could tell my battery wasn't lasting as long as it used to, but now it won't hold at all. Even if I plug it into my computer, it won't charge. I can only charge it in my wall charger, and the minute I take it off it says "low battery" and dies.
I know I can replace the battery...but what about the charger connection that looks burned. Would it be unsafe to use? Should I just buy a new iPod?
Your help is appreciated!

  • Should I upgrade or buy new?

I currently use a G4 running OS 9.0 (400MHz, 128 MB, 20GB) for QuarkXPress and Photoshop/Illustrator. I also have access to my partner's Windows machine which I use for web browsing, email etc. I would like to be able to update/upgrade so I only have to use my Mac but am confused as to how to go about it. I also have a very limited budget.
Can I install newer OS on such an old Mac (is it capable of handling it, is it compatible) and can I do so without having to reinstall other apps (I have lost the installation disks for some of them). Also all my files are on the internal disk.
Would it be better just to buy a newer one (perhaps a reconditioned iMac) and new software? The cost of this (even an older new model) is scaring me slightly...

Hi! You are in a fix! Your best bet would be to start new but that won't be cheap as all your apps as well as your machine need a makeover. If you use Quark and PS for work you are wasting a lot of time. Frankly I didn't think PS would run on 128mb. You can buy a Mac mini used for 300-400 bucks that would be a step up and you could "probably" run your OS9 apps in "classic" mode under Tiger 10.4.You could upgrade your existing machine but a new processor and ram will run 350-500 bucks. A new iMac with new apps is the best approach but you talking serious bucks. I would probably advise you to buy a good used mac mini that came with the original Tiger install discs but you will need a higher version 9 os that is higher than 9.0 which you will have to buy. There are no real easy and cheap fixes in your situation. Tom

  • Shuffle died-fix or buy new one?

Some how hit my second gen shuffle with a dumbell and dented the case very slightly.
Worked for a moment afterwards but when i went to another song got a loud screeching sound,
tried to turn on and off, then nothing. Just wondering is it worth trying to fix it or chuck it and buy a new one and be a bit more careful around the weights.
Love it for working out so definitely want it or new one.
It is less than a year old.

Check online Apple Store's refurbs for a refurb shuffle...when listed, they're only $49 taxshipping.

  • Little off-topic: Should I wait with buying new MacBook?

As U C I'm typing this on a PC. I would like to buy a MacBook, but I'm not sure if it's the right time.
A Leopard is expected to arrive in October and maybe an iLife '08 will be included with MacBooks. On other hand I can get a MacBook 10% cheaper now. Don't know what to choose...
I've heard rumors of a new MacBooks coming late '07. How sure is that? Is it worth to wait even longer?

Nobody here can answer that question for you, as your computing needs and budget are different than everyone else's. If you need a computer now then buy, otherwise if you keep waiting for the next best thing, you'll always be waiting.
*"I've heard rumors of a new MacBooks coming late '07. How sure is that? "*
Sorry, but nobody here can answer that question either as Apple does not discuss unannounced products, and discussion of such rumors is a violation of the terms of use of these forums.

  • I had a broken iPad mini. Screen cracked and not working. I want it fixed or buy new! Discounted if I'll send my old mini to apple?

    I need guidance?

You can either do an out-of-warranty replacement of your mini at your nearest Apple Store (make a Genius bar appointment) or sell yours for parts and use the money you get to buy a new one.

  • Stretching "text" when going fullscreen, making it hard to read. Using Latitude E7240 notebook 16:9 1366x768 connected to a 16:10 1440x900 sms22a450 samsung monitor. Any way to fix without buying new notebook?

    Basically what the title says.
The rendered text is fine when I'm not using full-screen, but as soon as I change it to full-screen the text becomes blurry (most likely tied to the difference in native resolution and aspect ratios).
Using a Latitude E7240 notebook docked and connected to a Samsung SMS22A450 monitor. The notebook has an aspect ratio of 16:9 with native resolution of 1366x768 while the samsung monitor has 16:10 1440x900.
Have tried fiddling with the resolutions, aspect ratios, Windows ClearType, DVI, HDMI, DP.
Is there any setting or something I can do inside of Adobe Reader to maybe fix this problem? Full-screen is very nice when I'm reading study material so I'd love to be able to use it.
    Thanks in advance!

You can try to play with the Display settings
You can change the display resolution and the type of Display (Monitor vs Laptop/LCD). I have no problem with huge displays, Mac or PC, using a 2nd monitor with or without mirroring the second monitor.

  • Upgrade MBP or buy new?

    Hi!
I am currently using an early 2011 13"mbp. As of recently it has started being sluggish and showing its age. I also get to work on a late 2013 13"mbp which makes mine look really slow!
I have though of buying a brand new one, like the one I use at work ,but I also thought that maybe if I upgrade the RAM and the HDD to an SSD i just boost its performance close to the 2013 model.
Has anyone made such an upgrade? And if yes, is the speed boost worth it?
    PS1
For those who will tell me to check WHY my computer became sluggish.. I am very carefull not to install app i dont use. I also use Appcleaner so any app I used once and got deleted I delete all asociated files with it. Plus I check to have enough space on my HDD.
    PS2
My personal computer specs are: MBP 2,3GHz Intel core i5, 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ram, 320Gb HDD, OSX Mavericks.
The computer i use at work is: MBP-Retina 2,4 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz ram, 256 GB PCIe-based SSD, OSX Mavericks
So what do you think? Should I upgrade or buy new?
Money is not a problem but I also dont want to spent upgrading to an SSD, RAM and installation costs and then go buy a new MBP if the speed bump was not worth it.

There's no telling why your computer is sluggish. It could be a number of things: eminent hard drive failure, software conflict, bad system configuration, etc.
I upgraded my Late 2011 with 15" 16GB of RAM and a SSD shortly after I bought it. It's a very fast machine.
Upgrading the RAM will allow you to run more apps concurrently and will boost some applications speeds. A SSD would speed up disk intensive tasks. Upgrading your model would be less expensive that configuring a new model with 16GB of RAM and a 256-512GB SSD.
    My 2¢...

Buy it for the other computer. Mountain Lion is preinstalled on the new Mac, but you can only use it in the new one

You got ripped off. You bought a hacked/jailbroken phone. That's what error 1015 means. Return it and get your money back if possible and buy a phone from a legitimate source.
Discussing jailbroken / hacked phones is forbidden by the terms of service. Jailbreaking / hacking voids any warranty and forfeits your right to support here or from Apple. You can not get help here.

  • Recently bought new macbook pro , transferred data over and thought microsoft office would work on new laptop. Icons are there , although don't have my key codes!! should i just buy new software package ?

recently bought new macbook pro , transferred data over and thought microsoft office would work on new laptop. Icons are there , although requires key codes and I don't have my key codes anymore as dog chewed the packaging!! should i just buy new software package ?  I am told that this is a microsoft issue not a mac issue !! But all my other data on the old macbook pro transferred over even the icons for office for mac on the bottom app bar. only now I can't open any of my word or excel files without key code! I thought that there may have been something that could be done before having to bite the bullet and fork out for new software package.??

If this is Office for Mac 2011 then it will work on your new computer. Reinstall it. If you don't have the key code call Microsoft's activation line to get a new key code. Explain that you lost the original key code and want to install Office on your new computer.

  • Should I wait to buy a new Macbook?

Should I wait to buy a a new Macbook until the Mountain Lion Software comes out?

I wouldn't wait - you are eligible to get Mountain Lion download free if you buy a new MacBook now, and it'll tkae Apple a few days (longer if not purchased directly from the Apple Store) to update the image. You aren't missing anything placing the order now.

    i wish i hadn't bothered with lion..
reading though this discussion forum this problem seems to be happening to others... so why it seems is apple ignoring it ?....
now if i need a new drive because of this upgrade why didn't apple say your optical drive may need to be upgraded to work with lion before i started ...
i was quite happy with snow leopard...
i mean apple do say keep your machine up to date ..do they not!
    terry dissapointed
    in the UK.

Restore your bootable backup/clone or Time Machine of your previous Snow Leopard installation and see if the problem persists.

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.
