Should I flash the bios? K8T NEO FIS2R

Ok... I have a K8T NEO FIS2R mobo.  A couple of friends of mine have been telling me to flash the bios to the most current version...  Then some other people have been telling me that it is too risky and I should hold off untill something goes wrong that I know a bios flash can fix...
I'm just wondering what is the concencious here... should I flash it, or should I stay with the current version I have now(the one that came with the mobo)  I Like to have my computer as up to date as possible, but all the reports of bad flashes have me a little worried.  This is a procedure that I have never done before, and I dont want to mess it up.
If I should flash, Any insight, tips, tricks, special instructions, etc... would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks!
Magnum

Thanks guys for the quick responces...  I'm used to not getting a responce from forums for 12-24hrs and here it is less than 24hrs later and I have 10 responces.
I'm not at my computer in question right now, but I am almost positive that my bios is ver1.0.  Same one that came with my mobo.
At this point I am leaning towards flashing...  If basically the only way to mess it up is to have my power fail, then I dont think I will have a problem.  I'll just borrow an UPS from work here to be on the safe side.
hypothetically if i follow the instructions to a tee(windows flash/live update) are there any other ways it can mess it up?  I just want to get a hold on all the places where I could mess it up.
Will live update take me all the way through the procedure, or do I need a separate set of instructions to read off of during the flash?
Also what gear will I need...  floppy disk? anything else?
Sorry about all the questions, just want to make sure I do this right the first time!
Thanks!

  • [Athlon64] MSI K8T Neo FIS2R BIOS Update when? CnQ no workie!

    The MSI K8T Neo FIS2R (MS-6702) hasn't had a BIOS update since 3-4-2005!
I put a Sempron 64 3000+ in my motherboard, and was very disappointed that it is recognized as an "AMD Unknown Processor".  Sure, it works, but one of the reasons I bought it is in the hopes of getting AMD Cool n Quiet to work.  However, apparently the AMD driver can't recognize the CPU due to the old BIOS on the motherboard.
Every other MSI skt 754 board supports Sempron E6 revision already.  Why not the K8T Neo FIS2R?  Where have all the MSI BIOS programmers gone?  I have been waiting 2-months for a BIOS update to support the E6 Semprons.  I have asked and begged MSI Tech Support.  I am tempted to switch to ASUS or some other company that is actually timely with BIOS updates.  Only reason I haven't yet, is this board is everything I want EXCEPT for Cool n Quiet not working.  It's starting to look like there is no BIOS update in sight, so I am very disappointed.
Anyone here work for MSI can confirm there are no plans for a BIOS update?  Because I don't want to wait around for something that's not going to happen.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply I thought the mods here are MSI staff... I was just kind of hoping there's MSI staff lurking here, seeing what people think of their products or seeing what people complain about.
No, pretty much C 'n Q is the only reason I'm disappointed, but it was something I was really set on getting to work since this is a server that's up 24/7, but isn't utilized but maybe 4hrs out of a given day.  I could reduce frequency and voltage, but unlike C 'n Q, it won't automatically increase speed and voltage based on demand - which is something I want since although it's a server, I also use it as a regular PC as well.
I've even tried the 2.33 beta BIOS with no change, and even found a 5.52 BIOS in their BIOS testing directory.  I guess that BIOS was for a different kind of 6702, although I had pulled out the peripheral modules with AMI's MMTOOL and they looked the same as the existing BIOS, but that BIOS killed my motherboard so it couldn't have been for a regular 6702.  I had to desolder the BIOS chip with a heat gun, reprogram the old BIOS back on it with an EPROM programmer, and solder in a socket.  I guess that shows my dedication to get C 'n Q working!

  • MSI K8T NEO-FIS2R: RAM problems

    I have the motherboard K8T NEO-FIS2R with AMIBIOS 2VMS V2.0 010505.
    I tried these DDR-RAM:
    DDR-RAM 512MB PC400 CL3 Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512
    DDR-RAM 512MB PC400 CL3 Samsung
but the motherboard recognizes only 256 MB for both. The RAM are good: I tried them in an other pc!
Now I have installed an A-DATA ram 256 MB and the motherboard recognizes 256 MB!
Do you think that my motherboard is defective?
    Thank you in advance.
P.S. I'm sorry for my bad english.

No the memory controller is onboard the CPU so in any case the MB is not defective. However the CPU revision may hold you back on some RAM especially if you mix make and model RAM on the same channel. A socket 754 CPU only has one channel so all RAM must be matched to work properly.
If those Sticks can only be seen as a wrong value when used by themselves it is likely that either they have errors or the timings in Bios are improperly set to azllow them to work. In this case you can normally find out what is going on by running memtest86. If you get errors on test 5 or 7 then you have timgs timed improperly and any other errors would show bad RAM.
Another case is not having enough power for everything to work properly together. Usually this happens when you don't have enough 12v amps for these newer rigs.
Post complete specs and test results and maybe we can help you further.

  • Msi K8t Neo Fis2r-revision Differences

Hi everyone,  Ive been trying to get rev 1.1 of the msi k8t neo fis2r  but with no luck. Can anyone tell me the difference between the 1.0 rev and the 1.1 rev.Is it just a bios difference or is there more to it than that.
thankyou for any help,i find this forum most informative.

    Hi Apple Renegade,
Thankyou for your prompt reply.I am fully aware of the 1.0 to 1.1 differences in bios. This tells me [obviously] that there ARE differences but does not tell me if it is tho  ONLY difference between the two version mobo's, that is why i came to this forum where there are people with far more experience and knowledge than myselfd. If the difference is only bios then i have no problems going with the 1.0 version and doinga bios upgrade but if there are more differences then i need to know what they are.     Regards.

  • High frequency sound with K8T Neo-FIS2R

    Hello!
I have the MSI k8t neo-fis2r mainboard with bios v 1.6 and sometimes it makes a horrible high frequency sound and I cant figure out why.
    My system are:
    amd 64 3000 cpu and
    Corsair Value S PC3200 DDR-DIMM 512MB Unbuffered, Non-parity, 64Megx64, CL2.5
My other components does not cause the sound (that I have found out by testing).
I wonder if the ram causes the sound? Can you please help me. The sound is so bad that I cant use my computer. It only appers during heavy system load, and not in windows. It has nothing to do with my video card (because I have tried with several different cards). My bios settings are default values + cool and quit enabled. I have the core center installed so the progam controls the cpu fan.
I really hope someone can help me.

The sound does not come from the speaker and I dont think it comes fom the cpu fan either. I think it comes from the motherboard, ram or the cpu. When I dont use my mouse it is quit but when I clik it makes this sound. Can it be that I have to set all values in bios for ram etc. manually instead of automatic?
When it comes to other electrical sources I have a TV standing 0.5 meter from the computer. Could thins cause the problem? I did not have the problem with my old motherboard which was a MSI K7T Turbo2.
The sound usually appers when I am benchamarking my system. For example 3dmark 2004. Because of this I thougt there was a problem wiht my vga card but after a changed to a new one...the situation was just the same.

  • Motherboard Monitor settings for MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R

I'm new to motherboard monitor and there are no predefined settings available for the MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R.
Anyone help me with the appropriate settings to monitor temps and fans?

    Lunchbox,
Yeah I can do that - but I'm not confident of the settings or readings.  For example - the CPU temp Is only sort of correct if I set it to sensor Winbond 2 2N3904.  But after displaying what I believe is correct for a few seconds it changes to something ridiculous like 7C.  I've tried all the other board sensors listed and they either say my CPU temp is 118C or 7C.  System temp seems to work, but again I'm not sure.   Hence my post here.
It is also odd that CoreCenter and MBM disagree about a few things.  Like the +12.00 rail Corecenter says 12.00v and MBM says 12.22V.  Or Fan 1 that is easly 2X what corecenter says.
And if you run CoreCenter WHILE running MBM all kinds of wierdness happens - like CPU temp fluctutating wildly or CPU fan speed synchronizing and then not.
Plus clock speed is a consistent 2001 with CC and 1998 with MBM.
So I want someone who knows what they are doing to do the configs - clearly that's not me.

  • MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R VIA K8T800 Issues

I am thining of switching from a P4 system to a athlon 64 system. Only I have a few problems.
Will I be able to use an amd athlon 64 3000+ on the MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R VIA K8T800 motherboard??
and also will I be able to use my OCZ 1GB (512x2) DDR533Mhz PC 4200 RAM (DUAL CHANNEL) on the motherboard as well?

    Hi
I use Elixir from Ebuyers, thats the cheapest I could find, works flawlessly on the AMD 64 3200+, the label says
    ' M2U51264D88HB3G-5T
    512MB DDR 400MHz- CL3
    PC3200U-30330
The sticks were taken from a KT4 Ultra, where they also worked faultlessly.
    Hope it helps

  • MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R, BIOS flash???

I'm trying to flash my bios but i get this wrong message after restart: CMOS SETTINGS WRONG, if you have built sata raid array previously, go to "P20378 sata controller" set as raid. I've tried that but it dosn't help.......what should i do???
    Motherboard: MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R
    Harddrives 2 x S-ATA Western Digital 250 Gb, 2 x IDE Seagate 80 Gb

i used to get that almost every time i update BIOS. I forgot the fix, but we need to know as Tiresmoke said whether u r at all using the promise. if Via serials r enough for u (which in this case they r since u only hv 2 sata hd's) then just use these and see what happens.
did u also try to load bios defaults? i think i used to do this when i get that error msg

  • K8T NEO FIS2R can't use the RAID controller....

I have this very strange issue.
As soon as I connect a harddisk to the Promise (378) controller of this board and assign it to an array, the system doesn't work like it should.
    Symptoms:
    - MS Windiag (a memory testing application) reports thousands of errors
    - Memtestx86 causes a spontaneous reset within seconds
    - I can try to install Windows, but the process never completes; during the installation everything works really really slow (partial XP installation takes over 2 hours!)
    - Linux gives me a kernel panic while booting
    My system specs:
    - MSI K8T Neo FIS2R (bios 1.5)
    - Athlon 3000+
    - 2x 512MB PQI memory (tested with GEIL/Kingston/Infineon memory as well, the problem persists!)
    - Radeon 9700
    - Levicom PSU (34A RMS on 12V line) (also tried Enermax 460W and Antec tru power 480W)
    - 2x WD Raptor 36Gb (RAID 0 array 1)
    - 2x Maxtor Diamond plus (RAID 0 array 2)
    - 4x optical drive
I just can't figure out what's going on here... if I don't use the onboard RAID controller everything is fine.... but I need it for my two arrays... (besides that, it should work, shouldn't it?).
Is this perhaps just a bug in the BIOS of my system? If so... MSI please resolve this issue, my computer is worthless for the time being.. :(

YAY! This memory tester seems to work correctly..!
If I put a single module (PQI memory) in DDR slot 1 I get loads of errors. In slot 2 and 3 they work just fine. When combining two modules, using slot 2 and 3, I still get some errors (32, all above 1000Mb)... but it's the best I can get out of my 1Gb.
Is it safe to assume that this is a compatbility issue that can be fixxed by buying some supported memory?

  • K8T Neo-FIS2R - Best Bios Version?

The subject kinda says it all!
I read a topic here where someone was having a problem, installed an older bios, and his problems were solved!
Is there a "preferred" bios for my motherboard (K8T Neo-FIS2R)?
Things are more or less working reliably, except that I cannot boot properly when Cool & Quiet are enabled, but I'd be willing to take the risk of downgrading the bios if you guys feel an older one potentially better.
    Thanks!

do not update BIOS when everythink is working fine. BIOS flashing is always risky.

  • K8T Neo-FIS2R and 2.2 bios problem

I flashed the bios of my K8T Neo-FIS2R to version 2.2.
Everytime I boot the system, I can just see the Windows XP logo appearing for a second, then the system reboots again.
I reflashed from a floppy to version 2.1 again, but still the same problem.
My HDD is a Western Digital SATA drive on the VIA controller.
Can somebody please help me out?
    THX!
    Marco

    Thanks for your support!
After reflashing to 2.0 I still had the same problem.
The bios was not causing the problem. In some way, Windows couldn't load the SATA driver properly, I think.
I removed the SATA HDD from the VIA controller and connected it to the Promise controller, and surprisingly, Windows started again.
The HDD LED works on the Promise, but not on the VIA, so I left the HDD on the Promise controller. The LED problem is now solved as well.
I still don't know exactly what was going on. Anyway, it wasn't MSI or the new bios, it was Microsoft...

  • Cant get into Bios, New board (K8T Neo-FIS2R)

I just put in a new board and cpu, everything seems to start up fine. BUT I press DEL to get into the bios settings and it tells me theres no bios installed. My HDs wont autodetect at the start so i havent gotten to windows yet, HD taken from old pc with winxp on it already.
Im totally lost here as what to do.
Can i just DL the newest bios drivers and flash?

    no bios installed
...that's the Promise controller...you have to press Delete when you first power on, you're probably missing the timing because of the Core Cell screen...
...you don't want to flash the BIOS until you get a stable system...well, you could, but...

  • K8T Neo FIS2R AMIBOOT.ROM not working

    Hi
Had a game crash on my system, and froze everything, so had to restart manualy - now I get the error BIOS is not installed..
I have downloaded a copy of the bios (not latest) and changed the relevant ROM file to AMIBOOT.ROM and copied to a freshly formated floppy.
I inserted the disk, held down CTRL and HOME and started the computer...
After a while of running through the messages of BIOS not installed and no SATA installed (which is correct), the floppy drive light comes on, and then after a while (afet I have released the CTRL and HOME keys) I get a message saying "Remove disks or other media, Press any key to restart" then nothing, if I press any key - it says the same thing untill I remove the floppy... and then it restarts again.
I have tried to restart using the floppy and the CTRL and HOME keys about 20 times so far - always the same result - I have even tried diferent versions of the BIOS.
    Any ideas?
I only have one stick of RAM (256Kb - 333) and two IDE HD's
    Many thanks in advance
    GreenBoy

    Hans
My Set up is as follows (from the top of my head as I am doing this form work)
    K8T Neo FIS2R.
    AMD 3300 745pin chip set.
1 stick of 512Mb ram (non branded - baught from Watford Electronics)
    2 x 200Gb Maxtor HD's
    1 40GB Seagate HD
    1 DVD RW
    Power 500W
Dont know what else you need...
Anyway - last night I reset the CMOS in the way you described.
Still cant find the VIA settings in the Advanced Chipset or elsewhare - but I will. urned of SATA in Intergrated Peripherals...
Anyway - what then happens, is it says it cannot boot.
I tried using a Win98 SE boot disk - and all the  drivers were listed as not possible to load  or something...
Any way - deciding I did not have anotehr boot disk to hand - tried Symantec Ghost - still same result.
Finaly I tried WinXP Pro, and found that this installed all the bootup files no problem at all - what was then found was that my C: partition was missing - yup boot sector had completely disapeared.
Anyway knowing that I have recent full backups og my primary drives using Ghost, I took the plunge, created a partition in the unalocated space, reformated the drive, and reinstalled WinXP... all seems ok for now... except the message regarding no BIOS - but from what you say as soon as I fing the switch I will loose that again.
The strange thing is I never used to get this message before, and do not remember setting anything up for SATA - couldnt afford the disks at the time....
Thanks for the help Hans, you have been more than gwenerouse with your time  , but can you please give me some more information? (Im a bit of a Nooby at playing with BIOS etc as they scare the crap out of me! )
    1) Why is the detail of my system so important? I have made no Hardware changes for approx 6 months and everything was fine untill the game crashed, so therefore, dont see why this should affect things.
    2) Why did the flashing of the BIOS not work? I was following the instructions carefully - but nothing.. therefore in my Nooby mind this means there is something else wrong, stopping the flashing from working.
    Again - many thanks

  • [Athlon64] K8t Neo FIS2R V1

Hi. Trying to set up a K8T Neo FIS2R V1.0 with an AMD Sempron 2800+. When I hit the power button it powers up for 1 second then dies. The green light on the tower flashes and manual says CPU overheat. Checked cpu is seated ok, checked RAM ok. If I unplug the 4 pin power connector the cpu fan then runs ok but nothing else works. Tried different video card, diffrerent RAM, different PSU. I have cleared the bios as stated but problem still exits. Could I have a faulty board? Thanks

You should use at least bios version 2.0, which if i remember correctly is the first one with support for semprons. I recommend 2.1, 2.2 causes some problems with agp aperture size on 256mb.
I don't see any other possibility than getting a "normal" amd 64 processor and then update your bios (of course it would be unnecessary to install the sempron then, because normal 64's generally perform better).

  • Flashing the bios in DOS

    Hi
I wont to try flashing my bios from dos. Have created a boot disk and copied the latest bios onto this.
How do I then go about flashing the bios as read the instructions but does not seem to work
Have a K8T NEO FIS2R and want latest bios on it.
Computer has crashed that why I want to try it this way?
    Thanks

    Hi
Setting CC to auto should not damage a disk, unless OC'd.
What Connectors are you using SATA or SER fotr your drives, SATA = VIA. SER = Promise.
Disable the non used one, I think Via is better and less problems with read/write.
Make sure the FDC controller is on enabled not auto, (just below the via controller SATA IDE) in Integrated peripherals.
When you boot, press F11 it bring up boot menu, all the recognised bootable devices are shown, are your SATAS there? If so click on each till you find the boot disk, and set that in Boot sequence.
If not then use use XP CD and get to repair console, select the partition that is your boot disk, normally C:>, then type   FIXMBR, follow prompt, that should reinstall the MBR on the disk you boot from.
Remember all the SATA driver files are on the boot partition, so if you re format you will need to re install them with F6.  If the above does not get you into your disk, then do you have 2GB spare disk space, or an empty partition, you can install another copy of XP, and then read your disks from that, AND back them up.
    Cheers
    jocko
