Should I Freetalk or Skype phone?

Hi,
Can I use my regular cordless phones using Freetalk to make my Skype calls (I have an annual subscription to Canada)? I have my own Linksys wireless router with a parental control filter/router called iboss.
Also, I don't know if it would be easier if I just get a Skype phone instead. I currently use Vonage (voice IP phone) with my own cordless phones & answering machine.  I don't know what's the best way to utilize my Skype capability.
What I'm trying to achieve is-
1. use Skype for all my phone needs (US and Canada).
2. be able to use my own answering machine.
3. if possible, to use my own 3 cordless phones.
4. be able to use my own router.
Please give me your expert advice on the options that I have.
Thank you very much.

It is virtually impossible to fix a water damaged electronic device.  Replacement is the only logical choice.

  • Freetalk ConnectMe Skype Phone Adapter

I'm in the UK and received my product this week.
The current firmware is 1.0.5.5 and I'm judging from the other posts that the latest should be 1.0.5.6 although this still seems to suffer from numerous minor issues.
Despite having the download time changed, and being reset, I still haven't been able to get my device to upgrade to the latest firmware.  I have tried contacting support by as others have found there certainly is no response in the target 24 hours, I'm past 48 hours and waiting.
Does anyone have any advise?  Does anyone have any information about the next expected firmware release date?
It would be really helpful if Freetalk were to publish the latest firmware version number on their support pages.
    Comments appreciated.

I answered a similar question like this before.  You can view the thread here:

My device has not updated higher than 1.0.8.0.  There is a possibility that there may be different releases in different regions or sub versions of the FreeTalk Connect Me device.  So a newer release may not exist in your area or for your box, as of yet.  Only FreeTalk support would know for sure.  I live on the west coast in the US and my updates pulled from a webserver in Texas.  I'm not fond of the update procedure, but it is what it is.

  • Skype Phone/Adapter Recommendations? (disregarding...

I am looking for recommendations for a Skype Adapter or Phone, other than the ConnectMe from Freetalk. On a separate thread I plan on documenting my woes with the Freetalk ConnectMe once the dust settles.
My desire: A device (I'll refer to it as an adapter) that connects to home network via RJ45 or wireless, that has an output RJ8 connection that can plug into existing telephone system (Panasonic base station with wireless handsets). This device provides Skype telephone service for outgoing and incoming phone calls without the need of a connection to a running computer at all times.
An alternate solution would be a Skype phone system that connects directly to the home network (not to a computer running Skype).
There seem to be a pile of old solutions. A couple of hours of research points to a bunch of poorly reviewed solutions, all of which seem to be 3-5 years old.

You can try using the adapter I mentioned here.
    http://community.skype.com/t5/Windows-desktop-client/Problem-Phone-keeps-ringing-after-call-answered...
It still works with Skype 6.21 and has physically outlasted all the Freetalk Connect Me devices I have purchased.  The only Freetalk Connect Me that has survived many years is one that I own on 1.0 firmware that has yet to fail or update and Freetalks support was pretty much "too bad, so sad".  Which really doesn't bother me since it actually still works yet has no Caller ID.  This also leads me to believe the majortity of Freetalk Connect Me failures are software failures due to faulty firmware, updates, or power spikes and they offer no means of restoring the device in a hosed stated other than suggesting you buy a replacement which will of course have the same failure rate as the one before it.
I wish the B2K device was a standalone.  It  sort of can be if you dedicate an inexpensive computer/netbook to it.  If it continues to operate in future releases of Skype then it may be a wise investment.  There should also be less of an issue with audio protocol negotiation with the newer releases that the Freetalk has issues with on Skype to Skype calls.

  • FREETALK Connect-Me phone adapter discontinued

I noticed today that the FREETALK Connect-Me phone adapter has been discontinued. Is there a replacement solution? My device has been working great for several years and I use it all the time for connecting my home phones to skype.

That's always a possibility.  However I'm not aware of it being discontinued by the manufacturer.  You can generally buy it from the Freetalk site (http://freetalk.me/). Occasionally I've seen it disappear from the site (like now) when they are out of stock, then reappear again.  It's also available on Amazon and Ebay.
Some people have used the Soundwin SP110, but there have been a lot of stability/quality issues with that device.  http://www.soundwin.com/style/frame/templates3a/product_detail.asp?lang=2&customer_id=824&name_id=40...

  • How do I reinstall iChat, how do PC users video iChat with me, and should I just use skype?

    1. I deleted iChat awhile ago by mistake. I searched ichat in Macintosh HD, and the only result was iChat the application file, but its icon is a faded out IWeb icon. When I click on it, it just bounces on my dock, until it disappears and an error message pops up stating it quit unexpectedly. I tried dragging the result to my desktop then redragging it into my Applications folder, but the same thing still happens (faded out iWeb icon instead of iChat icon, bounces, quits, error message). I also tried installing the iChat AV (forgot which version) and iChat Update 1.0 Universal, both of which said I had to have 10.4. I have 10.5.8. Also, if this makes any difference, the current faded out iChat in my Applications folder says its version 4.0.9. I do not have my reinstall CD, and do not want to call support and have them send me one. Considering I bought my macbook in late 2008, and my warranty is up, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't help me anyways. I also do not know of anyone who has a mac so the sharing option can be crossed offed. Is there a downloadable version of iChat for 10.5. users?
    2. If I somehow managed to reinstall a working iChat, how would PC users connect to me and vide chat?
    3. Should I just use skype? Would i have to download anything? Is skype video chat free? What are the differences between iChat and skype, and which one is better?
    Thank you for your time!

    Hi,
    Reinstall Instructions
Be SURE to Download (Manually) and Install the COMBO version of the last Update to the OS you did as iChat will need to be Updated (Software Update will think it is already done and you need to Fool it)
    Re 2).
In theory it is just a question oif you using a valid AIM name in iChat
This could be one registered with AIM or one from @mac.com or MobileMe if paid for or a current trial.
In Practice it can need a bit of tweaking at both ends
They Need to allow the AIM App through the Windows firewall as an Exception (AS with any Non Microsoft app)
They may also need to turn off the "Real Time" option that does not work to iChat and effects A/V chats as well.  (It is Sending as you type). It will be in one of the Menus of their Budy List.
Post back for more if you get stuck.
    Re 3)
Skype does offer free Video Chat and some people resort to it when iChat to AIM does not work.
It is free (At present - and you only pay for the Connection to and from real phones)
Skype was bought by Microsoft within the last week and things may change at some point in the future.
    iChat has better Video
Audio depends on the capabilities of your Mac and their PC but is probably about equal.
Connection methods differ and iChat's Video and Audio Chats are technically more secure (you can in fact log out of the Buddy List as they adre Peer-to-Peer where as Skype uses a little bit of everyone's bandwidth (Between 40 and 100 other End Users)
    Other options are here
Video options are from 8 onwards
Mebeam is now called Koowy. (Video Chatting in a Web Browser using Flash)
    NOTES;
Google Do a Plug-in for Intels to allow you to use their Web Mail Page Chat Option
It can Conflict with Flash if you use more than one option.

  • Can someone pls recommend this app of Skype Phone? + I used the Wi-Fi skype

    Good Evening!
Can someone recommand a Mac friendly Skype phone that
    1. the base unit plugs into the (or Router) and the phone(s) are wireless
(just like using a 2.4Ghz wireless phones on a cable router)
    2. To to be extra clear..... expansion phones that will work off the same base but it would be a drag to have to buy each phone with a base station just to expand the system.
    3. I used the Skype Wi-Fi phone this week if anyone is interested just post and I'll post my findings and what applications and lifestyle it may or maynot fit.

Hi Bill, I will follow below with what I've found but you'll have to see if it fits your application....
My application: To lower my Cell Phone bill to it's min. and to cancel my home cable ip phone from CableVision.
    Phone: SMC Wi-Fi Skype phone
Technically the phone sets up in a snap, first make sure you charge it the full 8 hours. No software required so the lack of Mac Phone support is not an issue here. There is s/w required however for the Skype account on your computer and now Skype does have a package out that works just fine with Mac.
After setting up your Skype account and charging your phone you should be ready to go.
Important to keep in mind: Skype is not a completely free service, if you live in the US you would pay approx $30 for SkypeIN for your own phone number of the Skype number and the ability to have any phone service, PSTN, Cell, Cable etc call you.
If you wish to use this phone for outcalls as well, your will pay approx $0.02 per min. unless your calling Skype to Skype.
In order to use your phone at home it's easy to for the phone to find a Wi-Fi network of yours and if need by enter it's security Key. Finding Wi-Fi networks outside the home is a different story.
Please remember that there is no 911 service so there is a risk there. Perhaps and hopefully not you have an emergency in the home at 2AM your skype is not charged, what happens if your Cell is not charged, so the risk here is giving up your landline. As a single parent, too big of a risk for me.
Inbound calls will ring both on the Skype phone and the Computer and I expect anywhere else you have the registered Skype service.
I'm not crazy about the inability to only store contacts for Skype Users in the phone. Now I have to go to my Treo Cell phone and bring up the contacts to call out on my Skype phone just to save some min. on my cell plan. Not worth it. So should I keep the Skype wifi phone just to have incoming free calls? maybe as a cool item for on 10 year old so he does not want a cell phone anymore.
I'm much more comfortable putting a Skype "Base" station in next to my Mac Desktop, attaching my presently owned Wireless phone base to that and using Skype as my Home service whereas I can use it as well on my Mac and use it as I travel on my MacBook Pro simply by using the iSight Mic built in to the MBP.
Bottom line is that while the Skype service may be fun and find some usage, it's a long way from taking over the world but Skype knows this and appears perfectly fine with it's niche for now.
Bottom Bottom line is if I work from home what does the Skype wifi buy me? Nothing at all and if I cancel my landline, I loose 911 which I'm not comfortable with.
Perhaps when Skype becomes more mature and feature rich and there are ALOT more users for Skype to Skype calls I'll look again.
    Thanks
    Tom

How do I find out my skype phone number I dont know it

Hi, john.bell980, and welcome to the Community,
Sign on to your Skype account dashboard where you manage your payment methods and subscriptions.  You should see a tile that says Skype Number; if you click on that icon/box/tile, your number will be shown.

It should be accessible from your Skype program or app.  Otherwise, log into your account on the Skype web site using the "Account" link at the top of this page.  Then click on Online Number, and you will see a list of Online Numbers on your Skype account.

  • Is it possible to have calls made to skype phone n...

    Dear all,
I have recently been missing some very important calls just because I am not on my desktop or my phone does not alert me of a skype call. Is it possible to get calls made to any of my skype phones on my mobile, through forwarding?
    I would appreciate any help.

You CAN create a DLL with a UI. All you have to do is set the VI Porperties to Dialog Box and the front panel will be displayed. So, if you rewrite your main application to dynamically load DLLs, this should work. You will need to have common inputs and outputs on all your DLLs so that they share the same function prototype. The other way doesn't require you to create a DLL. There is a shipping example called Plug In Example. It uses a Call By Reference Node to dynamically call VIs. In the example, plug in VIs are put in a specific folder and a list of them is generated. The user can select which plug in VI to execute. Agin, you will need to have common inputs and outputs so that the Call By Reference will work.

  • A skype phone that needs no computer --- just wifi...

    dear skype
microsoft owns skype . microsoft owns nokia . i do not understand why microsoft doesn't manufacture a skype only phone using nokia parts . this is a no brainer . every person who has a skype account ( millions of people ) will buy this particular device . skype costs $60 per year plus whatever you have to pay per month for internet . ( please quit saying skype is free . that is a lie . ) do not design a skype phone that plays games or mp3 music or takes pictures or does a bunch of worthless app tricks . all we need is a skype phone that works over any wifi connection ( without a computer ) and costs less than 100 dollars . you can have a model that makes skype video calls for $89 and a model that makes no video calls for $59 . this phone will be the biggest seller -- in units sold -- that nokia has ever produced . do not combine this with a cell phone or a land line phone . ONLY SKYPE OVER WIFI !  this handheld device should also be capable of loading the most recent desktop skpe version for total compatability .  thank you .

Solved my issue by setting up a new account on my daughter's computer. Not 100% solved, but i was able to get the update on my 3GS.

  • Looking for a skype phone that works via pc

I currently own the philips voip 321, great phone for the past couple of years, but a bit dated, basically im looking for a phone that has the same feature. I can use my computer to call somebody, and just pick up the phone and talk to them, or if somebody calls me the phone rings and i can enter pick it up using the phone or the pc.
Most of the new skype phones are just internet based without the need for computers, which is great, but i prefer the computer to phone routine, are there phones like this around?

One named NotePad is free, saves as .txt files.
Another, WriterRoom, costs $1.99USD, and saves as .txt and .doc files.

  • Desktop Skype Phones for Windows 8

Hi All, I've downloaded Skype on my desktop for Windows 8 (I wasn't too happy with the app). I use a Skype number through my laptop (used as a server) which is shared between me and another individual in my office. I wondered if anyone knew if there was a way to get a USB Phone that we could use for this skype account so that either of us can answer the call or dial out from it? Any help would be great thanks.

If you want to resort to using a USB-based Skype phone or adapter, I would suggest getting one that works in conjunction with SkypeMate.  That 3rd party application tends to get updated enough to be compatible with some Skype 6.x releases whereas other USB phones I've seen tend to discontinue support and only work up to the release when they were discontinued.
For more information on your options, please read my responses in the following thread:

    Hello everyone,
I would like to ask regarding USB Skype Phone Adapter, as I am planning to buy it. But, before I buy it I would like to know if I can still use skype to call locally using the land phone line (since it's by contract, and local calls are all free). Can I use the skype keypad to make those calls? Can I have access to my land phone line through skpye to make local calls, even though I might use it from a different country through skype? Please help me with issue. Thank you very much in advance!

First of all, you seem to be using some custom classes as there is no table and no SimpleTableModel in Java ME.
    That said,
The simpleTableModel is already attached to the tableSo when you assign the variable reference tableModel1 to a new object, it is the earlier referred object that is still 'attached' to the table, not the newly constructed one.
If you can head me to the right documentationThat would be available from wherever you got the classes.
