Should I get 2.0 quad or 2.7 dual mac mini for photography?

I am eyeing the new mac mini for my digital photography. I am a hobbiest, but shoot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II in raw, so dealing with pretty big raw files. I am currently using both lightroom (on a windows box) and aperture to handle photos. I am thinking I will use aperture on the new mini. I understand that aperture can be gpu intensive, but raw processing is cpu intensive. My question, get the 2.0 quad with integrated graphics, or 2.7 with discreet graphics. Other pluses with the quad are the dual 7200 hdd's, vs single 5400 on the 2.7. Any thoughts, let me know. Thanks.

I think Aperture takes advantage of hardware acceleration, so it will benefit from the discrete graphics on the 799 mini. LR does not. The quad core will benefit LR for sure. I found this an interesting read:

If only you could get the quad and the discrete graphics in the mini...

  • Should I get a high end macbook air or a macbook pro for digital graphics?

I wanna get into some 2d graphics. Drawing professionally with a tablet and such. Looking into 2D animation really. Maybe a little 3D. would a i7, 8gb ram 13 inch macbook air suit my needs? or should I get a pro for this? i really like the light design of the air and think it's a good enough size but the real issue is preformance. I guess it doesn't have to be such a powerhouse cause im planning to get a high powered desktop/imac anyways? I just wanna know which would give me the best results for on the go rendering.

The advantage of a desk top is that it is NOT portable, like the mobile devices. I do 75%/25% business/pleasure on my iMac 27" and it is as secure as possible in its location at my house. Because all these systems are so multi-function these days - Internet, photography, music, writing, and of course business - the temptation is always to have one around wherever you are.
For instance, I take my iPad abroad, or simply out for the day in case I get somewhere and find WiFi and want to use that.  If I only had a MacBook, I would take that out, and risk losing critical business data and images.
Sure, I have Time Machine backups, but for me, the trouble and cost of claiming for hardware and software [if I could prove I wasn't simply careless], and then messing about to get back to square one makes having a stable system at home very desirable.
Then I can take subsets of what I want out on the lesser hardware and not worry.
So it depends if you are playing or working, and of what nature the work is.

  • What is best mac mini for easy video editing? Late 2012 quad-core or late 2014 double core?

    Hi!
I want to buy Mac mini and don't know which one is best for me. Please don't tell me to buy anything else, because it is my choise. I only need to know what is better:
Upgradable late 2012 version with quad core i7, 2.3GHz, 8gb of RAM and Intel HD Graphics 4000
    or
Non-upgradable late 2014 version with dual core i5, 2.6 GHz, 8 gb of RAM and Iris graphic card.
I do short videos with a few effects, transactions, fades, titles, sometimes add CC. So which Mac mini do you recommend, guys?

as a windows/premiere user i can only speak to the hardware. 8gb ram in either should be fine for short & simple projects. the i7 is alot better, however the hd graphics 4000 is not as good as the iris and may require running the mercury engine as software only. this means no using the video card to help premiere run faster. anything outside of premiere using the cpu for day to day tasks would also appreciate the i7.  depending on the model of the iris graphics, it may be a couple times faster than the hd 4000 and therefore might work in premiere. according to adobe it lists the Intel Iris Graphics 5100 and 5200 as working  System requirements | Adobe Premiere Pro  if you get into other adobe apps, the graphics wont matter as much and the i7 will run faster.  it is faster video vs faster cpu, which to pick...

  • If you traded in your mac mini for a windows pc, what would you get?

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini and am just chafing to upgrade. It's slow as molasses.  But at the same time, I'm not willing to pay full price for 2012 model, and Apple is way behind in releasing an update. In fact I'm hearing speculation that Apple may be just discontinuing the Mac Mini.
I don't know... But I'm getting tired of waiting. And getting a different model of Mac doens't work for me, because I want to use my own screens. (I'm running two large screens in "portrait" mode.)
Also, I have a Windows 7 PC at work, and I've come to realize that I don't mind Windows 7 and don't see it as intrinsically better than the Apple OS. In fact Windows & has generally been mariginally more stable, and a lot faster then the OS on my Mac. In fact I got both systems around the same time and the Windows 7 system did better with less RAM and is "aging" better.
HOWEVER, what I really love about the Mac Mini is how QUIET it is. I have it in my bedroom, next to my bed, and it's noise is barely noticeable. So I guess I should look into seeing if there area any desktop PC's that are as quiet.
Have you considered switching back to a PC, and if you did what would you get?

I moved away from Apple in 2007 and have never looked back !
    I use the ASRock Vision X 420D  http://www.asrock.com/nettop/Intel/VisionX%20Series%20(Haswell)/
Its the same size as the current Mini but a bit taller - BUT it is FULLY user upgradeable and about the same price once you make a mini upto the same spec.
I run Windows 8.1 on it and love it - yes there are lots of people bleating on about the 'metro' style of Win 8 but if you configure it (which has been a feature from launch, not a 3rd party hack) you never have to see the metro interface and you have a standard desktop.
As to woodmeister50 comment of : Also, with Win8, many third party add on companies have dropped support etc. is that not the same for Mavericks ?!

    I have installed windows 7..
I also installed Broadcom 6.0.2 driver that supports Bluetooth audio gateway , but it keeps saying Bluetooth device not found, where as the Mac mini has an inbuilt 4.0 bluetooth ready!
How do I get the bluetooth audio gateway to work??

The GUI version of Disk Utility is very limited in what sort of RAID configurations you can create. It will only allow you to have a single partition on the disk and to make a RAID using that.
Boot Camp requires creating additional partitions on the disk and hence it complaining.
There is a commandline version of Disk Utility called diskutility (duh!). It has far more options available. Details for this command can be obtained by typing man diskutility in Terminal.app.
It appears that in theory you might be able to do the following.
Start off with both disks not setup for RAID
Use Boot Camp to create the Windows partition. Repeat this on each disk.
Then in Terminal.app manually convert the boot Mac partition to a RAID using diskutil appleraid enable
Then add the matching partition on the second drive to make it a working mirror using diskutil appleraid add
Then in Terminal.app manually create a RAID for the Windows partition using both drives and use FAT32 as the format using diskutil appleraid create
Then boot and run the Windows installer and tell it to erase the Windows partition as NTFS
I cannot gurantee the above will work and you should obviously have backups if needed. Another option would be to have the Mac partition covered by RAID but not the Windows partition, this would result in three volumes one Mac RAIDed volume, and two other non RAIDed volumes even though you have two physical disks.

  • Can not get Samsung 22" LED TV to work with Mac Mini (2009), 'No Signal' message. any suggestions?

I've just purchased a Samsung 5000series 22" LED TV to use with my Mac Mini (2009). I'm connecting using VGA with VGA adapter to MacMini. The TV is reading an error message saying there's no signal. Already tried with a 32" LG and it worked, as well as with a Dell moniter but can't seem to get this Samsung to work... PLEASE HELP!!

That is not totally true. Instead of using an analog VGA connection, try using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter and HDMI cable with that Samsung Monitor.

  • Getting 1080p on Proscan 40" HDTV with 2010 Mac Mini via HDMI

So I have been trying many things to try and get some sort of good resolution on my HDTV (Proscan 40") with the new Mac Mini, HDMI to HDMI. So far, no luck at all. Although the television says that it is full 1080p at when 1080p is selected in display the text is so jagged it is unreadable. I know very little about this type of thing so I am feeling out of my element.
I realize that the issue could be with the scaler on the tv (?) but since the menu is limited I cannot change it. I have downloaded SwitchresX and tried some things but really don't know what I am doing so if anyone has any pointers I would love to be looking at a beautiful 1920x1080 picture....

This is probably due to how your TV is handling the signal. On my Samsung if I label the HDMI port the Mac Mini is connected to as "PC" it handles the image differently to improve the picture quality from a PC. Fonts appear smooth as I would expect when viewing PC content on a monitor. The down side is I lose a lot of the settings that are normally available to different devices like a DVD/Bluray player.
I do not have it set this way and have the same issue as you where fonts are jagged. My reason for doing this is the color is actually better utilizing the connection as a device source than a PC source.
I didn't have a chance to look at the manual for your TV but I would check to see if you have an option like this.

  • Should I upgrade RAM or HDD to SSD on my Mac mini mid 2010?

    Hello,
I have a mid 2010 Mac mini with 2GB of RAM. My apps like E-Mail, Safari, Google Chrome and others are starting slow and sometimes running slow. Should I upgrade RAM to 4GB or 8GB or replace my 320GB HDD to SSD?
    Thank you yor help, DZetko

You are running a Core 2 Duo. Even a duck has paddling limitations. You are running Mountain Lion on a 2GB machine and it is starved for RAM. The performance is gravitational.
Upgrade your machine via the preceding MacSales link to matching 4GB modules for 8GB. I believe you will be astonished at the improvement. Make certain that you have used Disk Utility to verify/repair your system preferences, and then verify the boot drive while in Disk Utility.
In your login directory (~) go into the Library/Caches folder, select everything in it and move to Trash. Don't bother to empty the Trash just yet. Shutdown your mini.
Now, power on your mini. At the chime, press and hold the shift key until you see a grey horizontal progress bar. At the login window, press and hold the shift key again as you press the right-arrow icon to login. Release the shift key when the Finder menu bar appears. You are now in Safe Boot Mode. Empty the Trash. Reboot normally.
This just did a series of house-cleaning steps for you. It removed and/or rebuilt system cache files, including the Fonts cache. It also rebuilt the database governing the open with ... menu. So, if you had any duplication in there, they are repaired. Safe Boot Mode also does a low-level inspection of your boot drive. You should see some additional performance improvement. I do a Safe Boot Mode about once a month as routine maintenance.
With the improvements I have suggested and preceding pointers, you should have a 2010 Mac mini working as well as it can with Mountain Lion and a SATA II hard drive.

  • Getting photos onto my iOS devices from my Mac mini with beta library turned on.

I am using iOS 8.1.3 and have turned on Beta Library. I find that I can no longer get photos from my Mac onto my iPhone and iPad mini. In iPhoto, I've dragged them into Photostream on the Mac and they appear in Photostream there but not on my iOS devices. How can I get selected photos from iPhoto on the Mac to appear in Photos album on my iPhone and iPad mini?

The iOS OS doesn't give you direct access to the file system on the device, so will thwart your ability to upload files from your device. You can't interact with those files directly.
Perhaps there is an FTP app for iOS that would let you do this, but it might not meet apples terms of service for the App Store so would probably require a jail broken phone.
Even though limited by these restrictions, VPN is still helpful for other things. You can access a mail server or private website that's behind a VPN firewall. You can control airport base stations behind a firewall.  VPN can also make 3rd party apps more useful in other ways too. For instance I can remotely control a retrospect backup server using their iOS app with VPN to punch thru the firewall.

  • How to get the wi fi working again on the mac mini os 10.9?

    Hello,
I"ve had the computer for a year and this is the first problem I"ve had with the wi fi.  I used another device in my house and my comcast wifi works fine.  I ran network diagnositics and it said its fine but no web pages or web apps will load.
If someone could offer some advice that'd be great.
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x,/10.9 instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222

  • I bought a Mac Mini for the family but there's something very odd. Windows looks completely different and I'm completely confused. Is this because of Windows 8? How do I get back to my old Windows!

Windows looks completely different and we can't use the computer. We're flumoxed, we did some research and read about this new version of Windows - is this the problem? Is there a way to revert to the older version of Windows? Apple has shot themselves in the foot with this change. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Macs don't come with Windows. They come with OS X. If you want Windows, you'll need to install it yourself, or return the Mac and buy a PC.

  • Hi. Having trouble getting the superdrive on my daughters circa 2009 mac mini to eject discs.  Even the 'hold down mouse button on restart' trick isn't working now and there's a disc stuck in the drive. Anyone out there with a fix? Here's hoping :-)

It doesn't seem to matter whether it's a DVD or a CD it just won't eject :-(

Is there a very small pin hole, just inside the drive opening on the right? If true, you can very gently press the tip of a paperclip into this hole (with the machine on) to eject the disk.
With the mini off. Turn it upside down and thunk the bottom with your hand a couple of times. This may dislodge that stuck drive sufficiently to allow normal eject.
It may be possible to (again gently) pry up on an edge of that stuck disc with an old, unused credit card.
If you made it this far, better make an appointment with an Apple store to have the drive removed, disassembled, and reinstalled. If you go this route, might as well upgrade the memory too if it needs it.
