Should I get an HD camcorder?

I was considering updating my camcorder from a DV that records on digital 8 tapes to something more modern. I have been trying to figure out if an HD camcorder would be a good choice. I do like to the edit the family footage. As far as I can tell, that seems to be a problem. Am I correct in that:
1. It takes a while to download HD footage to edit.
and
2. There is no simple way to output the edited HD footage to my HDTV in HD quality?
I appreciate any advice or anecdotes,
Ray

I have had great results with my HD camera, and I never use my DV cam anymore.
On my computer, it takes about 1.5 times real time to import the footage. Editing is fast, no different from DV.
The best way I have found to watch it on my HDTV (50" Plasma) is through Apple TV at 540i. I have also used BluRay at 1080i, but the difference in quality is not great enough to override the convenience of the AppleTV and having all my movies accessible through a menu.

  • Backwards Question:  Purchasing PE7 is a given, but what camera/format should I get?

I've enjoyed PE3 for the past couple of years and it is matted quite well with my little Panasonic GS-320 MiniDV. I'm realatively new to camcorders and I really lucked out finding how great the PE series really is. Therefore, I consider myself pretty loyal to the Adobe line and especially this forum (special thanks to Steve and Paul for awesome advice and comments over the years --you have no idea how much time and frustration you both have saved me).
Anyway. I'm strongly considering entering the high-definition realm and I really want to upgrade to PE7. The only catch is that I will have to make due with my current hardware setup, which is as follows:
Intel Core 2 Quad QX6600 @ 2.4GHz and 2Gigs RAM. I also have SATAII drives and an nVIDIA 7900 (yeah the vid card is kinda old).
I could upgrade to 4Gigs RAM, but would VISTA 32 recognize it?
So Question 1 is: Could/should I get 4Gigs of RAM?
I'm struggling between the two HD formats: HDV and AVCHD. So I hear HDV is probably the easiest to edit (I do a LOT of editing; lots of scenes and transitions) and less taxing on the computer. I like the idea of HDV, but I'm a bit weary of the real time capture and time limitations per tape.
Therefore, Question 2 is: Should I go the route of HDV or get an AVCHD camcorder that can record more material without the need of switching tapes? HDV seems the more seemless route, but I'm equally concerned about quality. Would the footage be better if I get the full HD resolution in AVCHD at 1920x1080 and downgrade it to 1440x1080, or just work front to end with HDV at 1440x1080?
I will be using the camcorder mainly for general use, with some interviews here and there, some fast paced action scenes as well. I really like vivid colors (I love the 3CCD concept, but most cameras in the $1,000 range dont have 3CCDs anymore, I'm finding) It seems everyone is going to CMOS or 3MOS these days, which I know little about. Ultimately, I really would like vivid colors and smooth video.
Thanks in advance for any help/advice!

In my opinion, if you want to edit with Premiere Elements, you want to get an HDV, tape-based camcorder. Most any will work, although the Canon HV20 and HV40 are very popular and produce excellent results. (The HV30 has some problems.)
You definitely have more than enough power, even with 2 gigs of RAM, to do this. But, with Vista 32-bit, you can use as much as 4. With a quad-core processor, that's up to you. You'll know after you test drive.
The challenge with Premiere Elements is that it edits AVCHD natively -- as opposed to, say, Apple's Final Cut, which uses a proxy (sort of a lower resolution preview clip) for editing, then uses your native files for final output. This means AVCHD in Premiere Elements puts a tremendous strain on present technology.
With your rig, you can probably still handle it. But, in my opinion, you're better with having power to spare than working at the edge of your computer's capacity.
    Does that help?

Hi, I have a G5 2.5 Power Mac 7.3. I bought ILife 06 and am trying to edit DVD's I copied from tape to make another DVD. iDVD says my Mac does not have a supported superdrive. Copying home-made DVDs is easy (Disk Utility) but editing is more difficult.
iDVD says my Mac does not have a

Your drive shows as supported, so it may be some iDVD problem. Does the drive burn with other applications. e.g. Disk Utility, iTunes, or Finder.
How do you plug in video to this computer?
You need a video input device. It could be a PCI card (depending on your computers bus), a FireWire device, or an USB device. If you have a digital camcorder it can be used to input video via FireWire. If you have to buy something, look here: <http://www.elgato.com>

  • What display should I get for my macbook pro?

Hey Guys. I think this is in the correct section.
So I have a Macbook Pro (specs at the bottom) and I am looking to add an external monitor to use as a second monitor and at other times a screen for my playstation. I have never had a monitor before so not sure how big? What resolution? What ppi? HD, UHD, 4K? Someone said something about refresh rate. I have no idea what that is. None of this stuff I know.
Obviously I want the best screen I can have and I would connect my Macbook to it by HDMI using a Thunderbolt to HDMI converter and connect my ps3 to it by HDMI.
What is the highest resolution a HDMI/Thunderbolt can handle?
    What screen should I get?
Also I connected it up to my TV once and if I put my mouse at the bottom of the screen and then moved it onto my macbook screen it disapeared and didn't appear again until I moved it up and I don't want this problem
    How can i solve this?
All help is very much appreciated.

  • Brand new Mac customer-should I get Lion?

    Hi everyone,
I'm writing because I'm looking for support.  I just recently bought my first iMac (it was between this or a Mini) after having my 4th PC die on me in 10 years.  While I already have the machine ordered I have been doing extensive research on what to expect with my purchase and one of the things I have been reading has been some compatability issues with Lion OS.  After having gone through several Windows upgrades myself I am nervous to be jumping into a new format all together only to find that Apple is going through an update to their OS (perfect timing I suppose).  That being said:
I apparently am eligible for the FREE upgrade to Lion with my iMac purchase.  Should I get it or stay with Snow Leopard?
I have the newest iMac out there that is the base model but includes 4GB of RAM and AMD 6750M graphics card.
I'm also considering the newest generation Time Capsule (2TB).  Will that work okay with Lion as well?
Also, last question, since I haven't received the Mac yet I want to make sure I got an okay model.  I was trying to pick what appeared to be middle of the road between a Mac Mini and the iMac line.  I'm not expecting to get it until tomorrow but am sure I can trade an unopened computer if  that's best.  Because I had a 23 inch monitor and keyboard/mouse with my former PC I had a hard time choosing.
Thanks for answering any or all of my questions.  Sorry if this message has the new guy feel.

Almost certainly if you purchased your iMac directly from Apple it will come with Lion on it already so you won't need to upgrade.
Time Capsule will work fine with Lion.
If you bought directly from Apple you have 14 days to return the computer, so if you are not happy for any reason they will refund your money. At that point you can decide if you want a different model or not.
I'm sure your experience will be a good one so don't worry. Reading in these forums sometimes can jade a new user, however please remember these are technical help forums that people come to when they're having issues and are not representative of the general population.

  • Excise invoice should not get created without PGI

    Hi,
I have a scenario where the billing document is being generated by the customer without PGI after creation of outbound delivery for exports. (This is as per customer's requirement - Copy control maintained in VTFL for the same - copying requirements 11 )
This creates a situation - excise invoice can be created without PGI - which creates problems for customer. This should not happen.
Customer wants a check during the excise invoice creation - excise invoice should not get created if PGI has not been done.
Kindly advise as to how this can be done.
    Regards,
    T Saravanan

    Dear Saravanan
    Two options are there
    -  in your existing routine itself, you can specify the control in such a way that unless the preceding document is PGId
    -  apply excise user exits like J_1I7_USEREXIT_EXCISE_BEF_SAVE to achieve the requirement.
    thanks

  • Excise Invoice should not get created without J1ID data for all material

    Dear All,
We  have a requirement that excise invoice should not get generated unless chapter ID data is maintained for all the materials in the invoice.( when there is more than one item and chapter id is not maintained for all the items)
At present excise invoice is getting generated for single item which has chapter ID maintained and  the items without chapter ID data are left out from the excise invoice. This results in an incorrect invoice.
We want to ensure that excise invoice is not created, unless all the items in the billing document have chapter ID maintained.
Kindly advise as to how this can be done.

    Dear Muralidhar, Lakshmipathi,
    Thanks for the solution.
I have been able to solve the problem using the user exit mentioned by you.

  • Should I Get an iMac, Macbook Pro, or iPad (3rd Generation))

I'm getting a new "computer" this summer, and I was wondering: Which Apple Device is right for me: iPad 3, iMac, or Macbook Pro? I realize WWDC is this summer (a day after I was planning on getting a Macbook Pro, June 10, which is my birthday) and Apple will be releasing/ unveiling their new products there. I realized that the iMac is more bang for your buck, but people are starting to lean towards portable devices, such as laptops over desktops, and tablets over laptops (mostly). I had planned to get a Macbook Pro (when the 2012 models come out) as of Sunday, April 22. But, as I realized that the prices for each are so different, considering their value, I realized this:
    iMac:
    "Land" - Locked
More Power for money (student discount)
Will last me longer (at least 2.5 years)
    Macbook Pro:
    Portable
Costs less (as of student discount)
    iPad 3:
    Even More Portable
    Costs even Less.
Considering these, which do think I should get by the following:
    Me:
Go upstate every once a month or so.
Going on vacation in the summer w/ family.
Do light gaming (Sims 3, Civ 5, Spore; not much)
Plan on bragging about being the only one in family w/ Mac (bring to relatives' houses to prove a point to my cousin that he's not the one w/ the coolest computer)
Lots of Word Processing (can use pages on iPad)
w/ iPad, I'll have more money to use on accessories (Step dad giving me $500 towards computer, I'll have $350 by June 10)
    Mostly do web browsing.
Want to use in school (high school)
If I get an iPad, I can afford to upgrade it every year, but not the Macs
Will be reading lots of books next year (will be taking AP English)
Lots of notes next year (Doing Government in Social Studies next year)
Will use iTunes U if needed
Need something to fit in backpack if using in school.
Not sure if teacher will allow laptops/ tablets.
Mostly do my computing at home
So what do you think? Should I get an iMac, Macbook Pro, or an iPad 3? Thanks! Best answer gets 5 ***** for the long reading!

Wow, using computers in school. I remember when I went, teachers flipped out if you had as much as a cell phone
A couple things I would like to point out:
1.) WWDC /=/ product releases. While it is likely, no one knows for a fact what will happen at WWDC other than usual events. I would expect it, but don't jump the gun and say "a new Mac will be launched at WWDC", because they have been released before WWDC.
2.) The iPad is in a different tier than Mac, IMO. I believe iPads should be supplements to PC's, since if troubleshooting need occur, you must still have a PC to restore. (Mac is PC). So say if you suddenly go into Recovery mode, you will be stuck until you find a PC to restore to. One downfall of iOS devices, so for that reason, I will not recommend the iPad alone.
If you plan to do most of your computing at home, I would get the iMac. I am a college student, and plan on replacing my Macbook Pro (selling it) with an iMac if I can afford it. I agree with you on the "bang for your buck", but even then, iMac is still pricey. With $850, you're still shy $300 of the $1149 price w/education discount. If you want to upgrade your processor (which I would), that's even more $. Plus, software if you need it.
What exactly are you going to do with a Mac that you cannot do with a Windows PC (outside of just using the Mac OS)? The playing field is leveling out quite a bit. But, if you plan on developing of any sort, get a Mac.

  • How big of an External Hard drive should I get?

I have a macbook pro, and I'm looking for an external HDD to back my system up to. Now, lets say that I have a 250 GB HDD in my Macbook, should I get a 250GB HDD external drive to back up to? Or will that fill up too quickly?
I guess my real question is, does Time Machine compound backups on top of eachother? If my 250GB drive is filled to 100 GB Capacity, will my 250GB external drive be full before three backups? Or does TimeMachine severely compress the backups?
    Thanks!
    Psych

Time machine doesn't do compression, but it does only save changes.
This means that your first backup will consume the same amount of space as your source data.
Then each subsequent backup copies the files that have changed since the last backup. Some applications may support backing up specific parts of files, otherwise TM will copy the entire file even if just one bit changes.
Therefore the amount of disk space you need depends on:
    1) how much data you're backing up (bear in mind that most people don't TM their entire drive, just their personal data)
    2) What percentage of those files change on an hourly/daily basis
    3) How large those files are.
So if, for example, you work mainly with text documents and you have 50GB of data in 50,000 files (average of 1MB per file) and you change 100 files per day your backup will consume 50GB to start, and grow by 100MB per day. Under this model a 250GB TM drive will have about 200GB of space for incremental backups (250GB - 50GB initial copy), which is enough for about 2,000 days, or several years worth of changes.
On the other hand if you work with large video or graphics files, and have 50GB of data in 50 files and you change 3 files per day you'll still start with 50GB of backups but your backups will grow at 3GB per day. That way your 250GB drive will fill in about 2 months.
Only you can determine your data pattern to predict your needs. Personally I use a TM drive that's about 2x my internal drive. I have almost a year's worth of backups and it is still less than 1/4 full.

  • How large of a backup drive should I get for my 500 GB MacBook Pro?

I have a MBP with a 500 GB hard drive. How large of a backup drive should I get for time machine backups? If I get a 500 GB drive will it just back up everything twice (as I have 250 used) and then delete the second backup every time it rebacks up so I will just have 2 backups? Or does time machine only backup changes every time it backs up? Thanks in advance.

    tehsnyderers wrote:
OK, so I ordered a Seagate 1.5 TB external drive. That should suffice for my iMac w/ 320 GB and MBP w/ 500 GB shouldnt it?
Probably. See #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Should I just partition it 750/750? or maybe 600/600/300
Use roughly the same proportions as the data on the two Macs, adjusted for how you use them. If one changes lots of big files frequently and the other doesn't, give more space to the first one.
so I have space to put random files as well?
If you put important stuff on a 3rd partition, you can have TM back it up, too (unless the drive is attached to your Airport), but it will send you a warning reminding you that it's not a good idea to have both originals and backups on the same physical disk. You'll be much better off finding another way to back that up, perhaps archiving to CDs/DVDs.
Am I able to partition it and use it with my airport extreme?
    Officially, no: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
    and: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2426
But some folks (including me) are doing it anyway!
So if it works for you, just be aware it's technically unsupported, and you'll get little or no help from Apple if there are problems. And a future update may break it.

  • How much RAM should I get my new MacBook installed with?

How much RAM should I get my new MacBook installed with? I'm planning on getting a new Macbook sometime this fall. I'll probably be a light user, mostly internet, email, and your occasional Letter/Envelope.
Are their any other options that I'll want to make sure that I get?
Oh, and this will also be my very first Mac.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

In the link Alvin Ray posted it shows the different configurations that can be used in RAM. Officially Apple states that the MacBook supports 2 GB Ram. It can hold 4 GB but only uses 3 GB. The 4 GB would only benefit the matched pair use for optimum graphics. Unless you do a lot of very graphic intensive work 3 GB should be fine.

There are a lot of drives out there as others here will let you know, there are good NAME drives but they also fail, POPULAR drives also fail, select the one you are happy with for your system and how you plan to use.
i suggest if $ is not a problem get a big drive you will find someting to put on it and is better.
