Should i get one or not?

I've been thinking of getting a new computer and i've been doing a lot of research lately about the MacBook Pro, mainly just reading forums and reviews about it.
It's going to be my first MAC (i'm excited), but i do have a few worries about the whole thing.
See the thing is, the more i read about it, the more apprehensive i get about getting it. I read about all these problems with whining and screens flickering and heat and fan problems.
My question is, to those who have purchased MBP's, should i get it or not?
Are all these issues truly that bad, or is it the result of people being too demanding and unreasonalble in their complaints?

Well, if i was in the states i probably would be talking on discussion board using my MBP, but im not.
I'm in Kuwait, and thats my main concern, if i do get one and it's defective or has a serious problem, then replacing it or even taking it to the apple store isn't as easy.
Thats why i want to be sure.
It's just that, as one user said before, rarely do people go on discussion boards if the are satisfied with a product, therefore you only get people with problems and complaints. And this bombardment of complaints gets you thinking that everybody with a MBP has had a problem, when in truth there could be thousands out there who have no complaints at all and are more than satisfied, and are simply surfing the web or listing to music or watching a movie or gaming, instead of coming into these discussions.

Mousing shows all the available pre-formatted page available in each template to give you an idea what is there, but you only get one, sometimes 2, when you create a new document. All of the other pages can be accessed via the Insert menu. Insert > Sections in word processing & Insert > Pages in page layout.
If they all loaded when you opened a template, you'd have to go through & delete the ones you don't want & duplicate the ones you want more than one of.

  • Yoga 2 owners - should I get one?

    Hi (:
I have a question for Yoga 2 OWNERS,
Other than the wifi and screen colors issues that I am aware of, and trust Lenovo to take care of that or replace the HW for these 2 issues,
What do you think about this laptop in general, in a daily use, as a laptop (:
Can you recommend this model for a heavy use for at least 1 year ?
I'm a PC a enthusiast, and I had beautiful laptops in the past, so mid-class built \ keyboard \ trackpad going to hurt me the most, I guess.
Many thanks and enjoy your new computer! (:

Sure Yoga 2 Pro is worth it, you can always calibrate the colors if you like. And WiFi issues are always solvable if there are any.
I would not doubt getting one, there is always still the ThinkPad Yoga.
    Both are great machines.
You should always take complaints with a grain of salt. I am talking from experience with my Yoga 13, plenty of complaints on the internet, but I have never been happier. I have none of the issues!
    Go for it!

  • Should I Get One?

OK well I'm going to need a laptop for college in the future. I originally wanted a Mac but I got turned off of them when my iPod Touch wouldn't work with my dad's Mac because he was 0.0.1 versions away from what was required. I thought to myself if I have to upgrade constantly to have things work (since there's a new operating system in the works as soon as one comes out) would it really be worth it? And they're also so much more expensive than some quality HP and Sony laptops out there. Those reasons the website gives don't convince me enough because I've had windows all my life and never really had trouble with it (except for Word, I HATE word lol). So what do you think?

In my opinion, a MAC is just another computer.
MACs are good looking, reliable (unless they do silly thing, like any other soft/hardware combo).
The OS is solid (I'd wait for 10.5.2 at least if you new MBP comes with Tiger).
The letdown may be that there are many more programs for PCs.
If you are going to do engineering type of a course, you'll find that many programs may not be available for the MAC platform.
You can run windows in OSX, but what's the point...
The bottom line is: if you WANT a MAC - absolutely get one, they are great. The price difference is often only superficial. Get a proper quote for a PC laptop with all the stuff a MAC has as standard - hires screen, airport, FW etc. and you may find that a MBP is the same price or cheaper (I recently got a quote for a full spec sony, and it was more expensive)
On the other hand, if you don't care what you get, get a PC - you'll have a great choice of software and you'll learn much more about computers. All the fun you can have chasing drivers, DirectX, plugins, fighting trojans and dealing with messages like this one: "wireless connection lost - cable unplugged"...

what's the best antivirus for mac?? and also should i have one on my mac or not???

Mac's use a Unix based operating system and other controls that make it hostile for viruses to thrive.
However it's possible to carry Windows viruses to other Windows machines by a Mac, also there might be some corruption if your dealing with a lot of Windows files.
So all you really need is a scanner to run when you need it, something like the free ClamXav is good.
    http://www.clamxav.com/
Apple includes a anti-trojan/malicious program type anti-malware service built into all latest versions of OS X, it works and updates in the background.
There has been many attempts at trying to "trojan" or trick Mac users into installing rogue software on web pages. If you see soemthing like this, best to just Force Quit the browser by clicking on the Finder and selecting Force Quit from the menu.
A alternative browser like Firefox will offer more protection.
If you run your typical day to day operations on a Mac in what's called "Standard User", with a separate Admin User account, you'll need to update your Apple Menu > Software Update and your Apple Menu > System Preferences > Security > toggle the "Automatically Update Safe Downloads List" check box on/off about once a week.
Standard User provides more security restrictions, but is also designed not to intrude into those who are less capable use of the computer.
Third party plugins for your browser like Flash and Silverlight (used on Netflix) require a once a week check for updates.
Use a free service like the Mozilla browser check here:
    https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
Always back up your personal data and never install programs that your not 100% you trust the source of.
If you have any questions or suspicions, simply ask the opinions of the more senior users here on this forum.
Good advice is not to install any anti-virus like Norton that demands the operating system remain a consistent state. Apple changes things all the time, which breaks software like Norton or OS X itself when a Software Update occurs.
There are two great free 3D games, simply search for: Nexiuz Classic and Cube 2 Sauerbraten.

Good Luck and enjoy your Mac.

  • New Macbook (should I get one?)

My friend own a PC but is starting to see the light.
so i got him to type out a few question
    My friend asks:
Should i save up and buy a macbook at around £700.
Its just that for the same price i could get a pretty amazing spec pc or laptop running windows.
I want to word proces,s play music, surf the web, chat, create and edit videos/pictures.
I want something that can mulitask without freezing up on me. Im running windows xp n had vista for a while n its terrible i hate it.
So yeah just wondering is it worth paying such a high price in comparison to a reasonably low spec mac.
    So here is the spec...
    2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    1GB memory
    120GB hard drive
    Cheers

You can exceed those specs with a new or refurb MacBook - and the price might be surprising. I'd add new RAM, of course.
What you're paying for is (1) quality/reliability, though an Extended Service plan is mandatory on all computers, if available; (2) extreme ease of use; and (3) usability on all platorms.
Ask your friend to go to an Apple Store to play around with the gear before plunking down the cash. And do consider Refurbs - a great bargain. The new batch should be available soon.

  • Ipod nano, should I get one.

With me wanting a new ipod, I decided I would like a ipod nano but with people saying that the screen cracks and the case get scratched really easily, is there much point in buying one?

I f you want to throw your money out of the window go and buy one...got mine yesterday and it already looks as if it was 3 years old. Cracking shouldn't be a big problem but it's the scratching!!!!!! Don't spend 250 buck and then have to buy some sort of protection. Besides the scratching the iPod nano is just great! Make you own decision...I just wanted to tell you about my experiences...probably Apple will shut all these topics down anyway!!!

  • Should I get *one* of the x-fi extremegamer cards: *which* on

hi all. I recently got a? special emacine with Vista on it with AC 97? onboard sound. I was fearful of trying a "real" soundcard due to Vista and other things, I recently looked at the USB-dri'ven Li've 24bit, but was not so impressed which leads me to my question. I play only games on this computerathlon 3.8nvidia 8500gt.2 gigs ram.either a 300 or 350 power supply. there are TWO x-fi extremegamer cards, i see....the fatality 64bit version, a huge huge box.2...the creative older version, maybe 6 or 24 bit, of the extreme gamer. a small box. so which one, if any of the two, for my Oblivion, morrowind, two worlds, neverwinter and 2?!?I was heartened by reading that the power consumption of a sound card is somewhat small, but i wonderfor me if the smaller 6bit card would be 'safer" for me to use with my 300 or 350 watt power supply. or am i really better off with my ac 97 onboard with a later driver for it's!?thanks...freestoneMessage Edited by freestonew on 0-22-200806:4 PM

thanks odawq!?I was looking for something like this here!!?most of the review sites give the fatality card glowing reviews, often such reviews can be wrong wrong!!?and i wondered, too,
If it would be overkill for my system!?here Google and avsforum and all have nothing much to say. I did read that few games are supported, as you say. I just want something that will just "work" better than my ac 97 onboard, giving me better sound and a bit of fps help as an extra. I read that in Oblivion mod forums , on beth's site, why they tell of how onboard sound does not work so well with any sound-adding mods, in Oblivion, too too much to process. probably Vista will not even give to me EAX, but with my 2. denon system, even regular sound will be better. so I am happy to read this, thanks again.... freestone

  • Should I get a router for security?

My iMac connects to the Internet using a DSL modem through SBC/Yahoo with a static IP address.
    I've never used a router...should I get one for security? (I wouldn't get a wireless probably.)
If I get a router, what steps are necessary to install it. Different network preferences?
I know nothing (never gave a router any thought in seven years of DSL service). Thx.

Dianne, I see you have another post on the same matter. Aside from the advice given there why not unplug the router at either end? If it still works then, tell us the make as it is a remarkable device. This ignoramus has often used the unplug to stop a connection either from a router to the internet or computer to printer or whatever, rather than consider some complicated manipulation of the software. The only other use for the router I can see is direct connection between computers and you don't suggest that.
Here in the UK the BT network which handles part of the internet route sometimes does not drop for some time after breaking the connection and the persistant links cause a "stale" connection and a failure to reconnect. The usual advice is to wait 30 mins before logging on again. That is the only snag with my cheap and nasty disconnection.

  • Why should i get an apple tv?

What does an apple Tv do? why should i get one? are they any good? how do you use them?

Any good?  Im a grumpy "doesn't like anything person"   AppleTV is far and above worth the $100 cost of same.
Tons of free content. You can wifi beam your screen to your TV via the AppleTV,  beam movies, youtube content on the screen.
AppleTV doesnt even have a bottom, plug it into the wall, plug HDMI cable from IT to your Tv set.....
3 mins to set it up with remote and then its all cruising from there.
If you get one, youll only be upset that you didnt buy one earlier.

  • Not sure if i should get one

I want a macbook,i really do. But its getting closer and closer to the time that im planning on buying one, and im not sure if i should get one yet. Im a sophmore in highschool, and i need a computer for highschool. I know im going to end up getting some bias answers but--Should i get a macbook now, or should i get some other computer? The computer that im going to get is going to have to last from now till--hopefully--the end of collage. So is there another computer that i should get, and get a mac sometime in the future? maybe even before collage and just have some cheap thing for highschool. I just want your opinions, im not trying to starts some kind of mac v. not mac arguement. I just didnt know where a good place to ask would be so i decided to ask here. Thanks Alot.

I used both Mac and PCs during college.
As a recent graduate, it was very important that I paid attention to my major and class requirements. Several classes I had required Internet Explorer, MS Project, and Visio.
At the time the best choice for me was a PC. However, as a owner of a MacBook, I now dual boot and have the best of both worlds. However, dual booting does require a Windows XP Pro "SP2" disc.
    *Getting Windows XP*
Around college you should not have a problem getting this. A single XP license actually allows you to install the OS on (1) PC and (1) Notebook. Finding another copy shouldn't be that difficult. And if worse comes to worse, you just call Microsoft (some place in India) and activate the copy over the phone. Just tell them the copy is on one PC to make it a quick phone call, they can't understand much more let alone any explanation of the license and if it was uninstalled off another computer.
    *Word Processor*
I use Word 2004 for Mac. It functions well, but I feel Word 2003 is still better.
    *School Software*
I would also check with your school and see what software you get with your tuition. Some schools just give out AntiVirus crap, others provide entire Office Suites. So if you are going for broke, keeping software cost in your plan is a good idea.
    *Final Opinion*
If it were me, I would go with the MacBook. Because I know how to hunt for software, I don't figure it paying for any. The MacBook is actually a very competitive price. Since Apple provides the option to run Windows, why not get a MacBook to take advantage of both OS X and Windows environments.

  • I do not own an adobe product and want a one-time payment licence for students and teachers, what should I get?

I do not own an adobe product and want a one-time payment licence for students and teachers, what should I get? There are so many licenses to choose from and at least 3 lightroom licenses for students.

If all you are looking for is Lightroom, I would suggest going to your campus computer store. The computer store where I worked had Lightroom in stock. If your store doesn't have it in stock they can order it for you. There is really only one Lightroom 5 license that comes with the standalone version, student or otherwise. The program is identical either way. Licensing for the creative cloud is handled through the web and the payment method, But you aren't concerned about that.

  • I am concerned about the health of my current computer but have not yet made the commitment to a new one, but: 1) How can I transfer my iTunes account to a new computer when I get one... and 2) What can I do if my current computer suddenly implodes and I

    I am a bit of a computer/Internet/iTunes dummy....
I am concerned about the health of my current computer but have not yet made the commitment to a new one, but:
    1) How can I transfer my iTunes account to a new computer when I get one...
    and
    2) What can I do if my current computer suddenly implodes and I have not yet 'copied/'saved'/otherwise protected my account, as is? -- I have already had my computer crash once and had one of your people help me restore all of the paid for songs (none of the uploaded from my own collection of CD songs, of course, so I had to spend a long time rebuilding that) -- and I believe I was told you could only help me recover that material one or two times altogether, no?
WithOUT purchasing a Mach or iCloud (I actually think I have one of the later, but rarely have checked it) account, is there anything I can do to responsibly protect my account?
Thanks for any time taken on this!!!

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • One Application deployed OK;  my app always gets error "404 Not Found"...

I am trying deploying my application from within JDeveloper 10.1.3.4 to the standalone oc4j on the localhost, before deploying it on an application server. I am a newbie and I am doing this by following a tutorial. The tutorial application is deployed fine, but my application always gets the "404 Not Found" error after deployment.
The standalone oc4j is set up on my Windows XP PC by running the <jdev_home>\jdev\bin\start_oc4j.bat file, and works fine because the tutorial application is deployed and runs fine.
For the tutorial application, deployment is the last chapter (Chapter 10). I started from the nearly completed tutorial application from the end of Chapter 9, and went throug all the steps in Chapter 10 and the application is deployed and invoked successfully.
My application starts with the login.jspx page. The applilcation runs perfectly when invoked directly within JDeveloper by right-clicking login.jspx and selecting Run. But when going through the same steps as with the tutorial application, my application always gets "404 Not Found" in the browser.
    The steps of deployment are:
    1. Right-click the ViewController project, select New and then Deployment Profiles/WAR File, to create the deployment profile. When creating this profile, I entered "ZBV" as the custom root context.
    2. Right-click the deployment profile (ZBV.deploy), and "Deploy To..." the standalone oc4j on the localhost, and accept the default configuration. The messages in the log window in JDeveloper are all clean without error.
    3. Open a browser, enter the url "http://localhost:8888/ZBV/faces/staff/login.jspx and get "404 Not Found". I have undeployed and gone through the same steps several times and always got the same error. I use /staff/login.jspx after ZBV/faces because in the Application Navigator, the login.jspx file is located in the ViewController/Web Content/staff folder.
I wonder what could be wrong with my application. In the tutorial it is said that both an .ear file and a .war will be created but only the .war file needs to be created because of the dependency of the ViewController project on the DataModel project set in the application. My application has this dependency set therefore I went throug the same steps as with deploying the tutorial application.
I hope the experienced and experts and gurus will shed light on me with their experience and wisdom.
    Many thanks!
    Newman

    Hi, Shay,
You are right. I checked the log and found one notification message:
Unable to dispatch JSP Page : Exception:java.io.FileNotFoundException: /staff/Login.jspx
The capital L is a typo when creating the page file. During development you never need to type the file name but just click, and I always thought it was login.jspx. When that is corrected in the url string, the application is invoked and runs as it should. The one letter drove myself crazy for a whole day.
Sorry and thanks! And to Dom too!
    Regards,
    Newman
