Should I get two hard drives-1, OSX and 1, XP? (help please)

I'm configuring a Mac Pro. If I get two hard disks, can I set up one to run OSX and the other to run XP?
Does anyone know if this works and how to do it (i.e., both to install and to boot).
Thanks for your help!!

Yes, you can have one drive each for Mac OS X and Windows. All you need to do is install the Boot Camp 1.1 beta and follow the setup assistant.

It is probaly so easy it everyone will LOL but I cant get it happening.

Do the HD icons appear on your Desktop?
If not, adjust your Finder preferences:
Also check "Hard Disks" if you want your internal HD to appear on the Desktop.
Open one, open the other, should be no problem.

  • How can I get two hard drives connected to the Airport Extreme. There's only 1 USB port.

I believe I want to use TWO USB Hard Drives with my Airport Extreme, but it seems there is only 1 USB port.
I am currently using that USB port for my backup external hard drive (works with Time Machine). But now I have decided I want a common hard drive for music, photos, etc. for the two Macs in my home to share. I read that you do that via the same port.
What should I do? Is there a way to use 2 hard drives - a common shared and one for time machine?
    Please advise and thank you!

    Use a (powered) USB hub.

I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.

  • Should I get standard hard drive or fusion drive on a new 21.5" iMac?

I'm thinking about getting a new 21.5" iMac.  How do I decide whether to get the standard hard drive (5400 rpm) or the Fusion Drive?  Besides Web surfing and email, I would be using it to play flash games, listen to Internet radio, and stream movies occasionally on Netflix.

    @TmanW:
Technically you cannot control where data goes on the Fusion drive 100% of the time as in the case of a two drive setup (SSD + HDD), but you can tilt where the data goes by watching disk usage and also partioning. My understanding how the Fusion drive works from MacPerformanceGuide.com (where they tested the Fusion on a late 2012 27" iMac) is that as long as you do not have more the 112GB filled on the Fusion, the drive won't kick data to the HDD when peforming tasks that use more than the 4GB buffer. I interpret this to mean as long as I keep the capacity below this 112GB threshold, I am more likely to get SSD performance. And to keep things under this threshold, one could just use the Fusion drive for system and apps only and perhaps targeted file usage (working Photoshop files that would be transferred back to non-SSD storage afterwards).
MPG also tested the Fusion drive with a partition method that biases the first partition to be 2/3 SSD and in this scenario a user can effectively (though once again not 100%) target SSD usage most of the time.
Once I get my new iMac, prior to cloning my existing system on to the Fusion drive, I will see firsthand if these tests are true to form with their results.

  • After new hard drive, Leopard installed, cannot log in - Help Please!

The local Apple store installed a new hard drive and Leopard on my G5 desktop yesterday. I attempted to restore my applications and documents, using Time Machine from my external G-Drive but am getting the message "you may need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item (Turbo Tax Premier 2007)". I also tried to install the application iWork which I purchased and it too would not let me because it was asking for a password. I typed my old password and user name that I had given to the Apple store (they asked me for it) but it was not accepted or recognized. Should I return to the Apple store and let them do this for me, or is there a reason my password and user name is not being recognized? Also, I do not have the Leopard DVD that they installed from to make any changes or reset the password (I have the original Leopard that I purchased when it became available but hesitate to use it since it caused my Mail App to become corupt which was the reason I went to the Apple Store in the first place as my other Leopard applications and system seemed to be working ok - but when they attempted to reinstall the OS, that's when they called me and said I needed a new hard drive since the attempted installation failed.) Sorry about rambling on, but wanted to give you as much info as possible about my situation and would appreciate any suggestions and help.
Will I have to reinstall all my applications such as Quicken, TurboTax, iLife, ect or should they be restored from my G-Drive? I'm worried about loosing my "documents" as they were created using the older "Appleworks" application; that's why I purchased iWork, to transfer them to.
    Thanks again.

  • Hard drives microsoft computers and macbook.. help!!

hi everyone, im not at all savvy when it comes to computers...
i have two old computers (non apple) i have an external hardrive that has all my pictures on from those computers but i now neeed to clear my macbook air and when i plug in the hardrive it comes up with something called time machine, when i go to press back up it says something about wiping all the data on the hard drive??? i dont want to loose all the pther pictures???? what can i do?

Do not use your external drive containing your photos for Time Machine.
It is likely that your external drive is formated for a PC.
If it is formated in NTFS format, your MacBook Air will be able to read from the drive but may not be able to write to the drive.
I suggest purchasing another drive formatted for Apple Mac just for your MacBook Air.

  • External Hard Drive not allowing Macbook enough Privileges - HELP PLEASE

    Hi all,
Im new to the Apple Notebooks, bought my Macbook pro yesterday.
I need your help with moving pictures etc to my external hard drive which is a Buffalo DriveStation 2TB USB 2.0...
I've tried a few online video's explaining the "Change your import storage to the External hard drive" etc and holding and dragging into my hard drive but no hope.
My mac pops up with something like "OS X doesn't have enough privileges" also another note came up "Microsoft Software is not supported on the OS X"
Any tips or should I look for a different hard drive?
Any help with be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jo.

The drive is probably formatted in the Windows NTFS format. you need to format it in the Mac format. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a partition table of GUID. You do that in Disk Utility.
Go to the Utilities folder in the Applications folder and open Disk Utility. Select the top most entry for that external, it will have the drive model and size. Click the partition tab and then select one partition from the Partition Layout area drop down. Make the Format as stated above and then click the Options button and set that to GUID. lose the Option window and click the Apply button. All data on that drive will be erased so if you have Windows files on it that you want to keep save them to a Windows computer before you start this process.

  • Using two hard drives - one external and one internal

As my macbook pro only has 100 gig HD I keep my most recent photos on that HD and edit the photos when I have the time on travel. I then have a 500gig external firewire drive with older photos. My question is two fold
    1. Do I have to keep re-setting the preference for the startup library to switch between the two or can I see both at the same time?
    2. At this point I can only see one library at the time, how then can I move my current images into the external drive, or asked another way, how can I merge the two libraries?
I receive version 2.0 today, but I can't think I am the only one with this issue, nevertheless, I can't find much about the topic.
    Thanks for your help

The biggest reason I wanted to do it was that for 2007 I took all my photos and put them in a project by month - so I have 12 project folders taking up all this space. Whereas, my older years, going back to 2002, they are in folders for each month in a project for the year. I did this when I bought aperture and moved my files over from Nikon View. All my other years where on my other library and my 2007 was on my library on the computer. So essentially I'd like to collapse the 2007 projects into one main area.
    Make sense?
Thanks for al your help. What a great resource.

  • How to use the same external hard drive for OSX and XP

Hello to all. First off, thanks for all of the helpful comments that have been posted in the discussion board, they have helped me a lot with my problems and curiosities. My question has been touched on in the past, but nothing concrete so I figured I'd ask a bit more specifically.
I recently loaded Windows XP (FAT32)onto my MacBook. Everything is running smoothly, but I was just curious how I could format my external HD so that both operating systems can read it, i.e. I only have 20 GB's partitioned for Windows XP, and i'll be using it to download music and movies. I would like to be able to play these straight from my external rather than use up the disc space. Let me know if anybody can help! Thanks.

Unfortunately, Disk Utility doesn't just move everything around. It has to erase everything, and then resize. I find it a little odd, seeing as other disk utilities can resize everything just fine. Anyway, yes, you will have to erase your drive to reformat it as FAT32. What I usually do is try to copy everything from the drive to free space in the internal drives. I haven't had too much data on my drive yet, so I've been lucky so far. I don't know if you have enough free space on whatever drives you have, but that's probably the best way to do it.
    1) Transfer everything over to a folder on the internal drive
    2) Use Disk Utility to reformat the drive as FAT32
    3) Transfer everything back to the external drive

  • Hard Drive makes Airport Extreme Restart. HELP PLEASE!

It's been more than a month since I startes trying to tackle this problem, now I'm pulling my hair out. My small 60GB Lacie (non powered) works fine, mounts, etc. but my big WD 320BG Lightes Combo makes the Extreme's status light go solid amber when I turn it on.
So, after reading a thread, I formatted the drive to Mac OS Extended. The drive then did nothing, and it appeared in the Airport utility. However, when trying to mount the disk, either with airport disk utilit or manually, back to the same ols story, the Base Station's light goes solid amber and I lose te network.
So the problem isn't the file format. It has to be something to do with the disk. But I had it replaced by WD yesterday and I have a new one! No change.
could anyone please suggest something? has anyone experienced the same problem?
    Thank-you

A little update... spoke to Apple Care... they said that this happens and then are aware that this happens, but had no answers how to fix.
Unfortunately not much help... anyone else have any information?
    Please help!

  • Can't get two IMacs to connect with Migration Asst. Help please.

Trying to get my older and tired IMac connected to a newer one via Migration Assistant.  They don't see each other and they both are on my home network.  Help please

Mike is absolutely correct, use a direct connection such as an Ethernet cable. Even better is if you have a Time Machine backup of the older machine simply connect that to your new iMac and use Migration Assistant to restore from the backup.

  • Use of a NAS Drive, iTunes, Movies and Apple TV - Help please

I have an IMAC and i have a number of movies stored there within Itunes.
My Mac is operated in a Wireless Environment and when using Apple TV sometimes the IMAC cannot be located despite home sharing being on both devices and when it can be located and I watch a movie that is stored there sometimes the signal drops off which interrupts the movie.
The Apple TV is connected in a wired environment.
SOmeone has suggested that I should move my Itunes library music and movies to a NAS drive and connect that to my router which is hard wired,
    Suggestions help and guidance welcomed

Update: I've found a work-around that lets me watch the movies, although it disables the iTunes Extras content (but it's not deleted).
While looking through the files for the Extras content, I noticed that for the two films I've had trouble with (X-Men Origins and Twilight), the Extras content was located in a separate folder from the actual mp4 movie files. For all my other movies that have the Extras content (and that were working), the content was in the folder with the movie. I tried moving the content into the movie folders, but that didn't help. Eventually, I removed the extras content from my iTunes library, without actually deleting it.
This caused the Apple TV to pick up the movies as if they were by themselves without the Extra features, and allows me to play them directly without going through the Extras menu. Something about the way that the Extras content was downloaded and associated with the movies seems to have gone wrong with those two movies, whereas for the others it worked correctly.
This is obviously not a long-term solution if you want to watch the Extra content, but at least this way the movie is streaming correctly on the ATV.
PS: for those two movies I mentioned above, the Extras content was listed separate from the movie itself in the iTunes library; whereas for the correctly functioning movies with Extras, the content was listed as another "track" under the movie.

  • Two hard drive icons on my desktop, would like to have only one...

Hello  everyone, I recently got a PowerMac G5 (I think it's a 2.3 GHz). It came with a hard drive inserted 'Untitled', which came from my old 1.6 GHz G5. On the desktop though, I get two hard drive icons, my main start up drive called 'Untitled', and another one called 'Spare'. I was told that my G5 has only one drive inserted 'Untitled', so I'm trying to either get rid of 'Spare', or merge it somehow into 'Untitled'. Under the Volumes folder, I was not really able to get rid of it, is this something to do with Disk Utility?
BDAqua - under Get Info, when I was on Leopard, I tried changing a User Permissions category called 'Everybody' from Read Only to Read and Write. Upon restart two days later, Leopard would not start up (loads of writing on the screen, with the Mac power button, asking me to restart). To cut a long story, I am now back on Tiger lol (Leopard issues for another discussion lol), so now I dare not play with anything which says Read Only, especially when it's probably not even necessary. I am writing this from the library, so don't know what exactly it says in Get Info - User Permissions for either drive at the moment. If this is relevant, I can have a look later and post back, I'll also verify permissions in Disk Utility for both drives, but I think they are fine. Actually, when I was on Leopard, my 'Untitled' drive took ages to verify permissions, and always loads of writing appeared! Now that I'm on Tiger, the other day when I verified Disk Permissions, it was quick and fine!
    Thank you
In the screen shots, 'Untitled' is model ST31, 'Spare' is model WDC

Hi BDAqua, sorry I should have just opened it in the first place! I don't know why that man told me there was only one hard drive inside, perhaps a misunderstanding.
It seems that there are actually two hard drives inside, one in A, and one in B (see photo)! So, if this is the case, I don't have a problem with the two hard drive icons.
I guess if a G5 shows two hard drives on the desktop, then there's two hard drives in the machine!
    Thanks for helping anyway.

  • HT1386 Ever since I had to replace my PC hard drive, my outlook contacts and calendar no longer sync.  It acts like it's syncing, but it isn't.  I now have two hard drives - c and g, but I'm pretty sure the Outlook data is still on c.  Any other ideas?

Hello - I just had to replace the hard drive on my pc, and now my Outlook calendar and contacts won't sync to my iphone 5s.  I ended up getting two hard drives (C and G), so I'm afraid that might have something to do with it - although I'm pretty sure Outlook files still live in the normal place on C. Itunes sync acts as if it's working, but nothing changes on my phone.  Any ideas?  Thanks!!

    "2MEM/1/4: DIMM3/J14"
Replace the memory in the DIMM 3 slot.
If you are running Mac OS X 10.5 you can use this program to test your G5's memory:
    http://www.kelleycomputing.net/Rember/
It will subject your RAM to a more thorough test than Apple Hardware Test.

  • CC on two hard drives

I have just installed a second hard drive in my Mac Mini and aim to use this as the startup disk. The old hard drive has OSX and CC installed. I downloaded CC for the new dive and logged in and it says that some apps are installed - I assume it is picking them up from the other drive. I would like to have them on the new drive so do I need to uninstall the from the old one before I can do this? It would be useful to have the second drive still available as a backup startup disk.

I don't think this is actually a LR ability... others will correct me if I'm wrong.
What you probably want is a program like mirrorfolder (pc), or Synchronize! Pro (mac).  then you really only need to copy it onto your lightroom drive, and let the other programs do the synchonization for you.  This would create a "live" backup for you, if that's basically what you were asking for.
    Cheers!
