Should I give up on Gmail IMAP?

Can somebody help me feedback about my Gmail IMAP problem, please?
I switched from pop to imap in November and as a first step successfully uploaded my ~2GB of old pop messages up to gmail to have everything in sync. I did this by copying the old folders across into the gmail folder and as far as I can tell this worked fine - all messages are there in gmail with correct labels.
I also set up gmail just right, I think, with the Sent, Trash and Draft folders of Mail.app mapped correctly to their gmail counterparts.
So what's my problem, you may ask? Well, I find with this set-up, Mail.app has become so slow and dangerously unreliable that I just cannot work with it. As soon as I am online or open a folder, Mail starts very lengthy caching and synching processes that seem to near freeze all action. For example, opening folders can take forever and I cannot use Mail Act-on properly as it just takes waaaaayyy to long.
But what's worse, although I have the option checked to download full messages and attachments, because I want to have copies for offline viewing, this doesn't work properly! All old messages should have still been on my mac in the first place, as I copied them from there, but they are not. Many are blank or garbled, when they appear fine in Gmail.
Finally, it seems that the data tranfer/caching/synching old folders that Mail.app attempts as soon as I go online somehow buggers up Gmail remotely, as when I have Mail running online, I often have problems receiving messages - they will arrive with lags of several hours, which is a total dealbreaker for me.
I tried switching to not downloading messages but it didn't even make a difference
My question is now, can anybody think of a way to solve my problems and still use IMAP, or should I just revert to pop and manually update what I have read and keep my sent messages in sync?
I probably use gmail's web interface for most reading and quick writing, but absolutely want to keep offline copies and use mail for the great ical and address book integration and for emailing with ease from apps like iPhoto and Journler.
Am really gutted that IMAP doesn't seem to be working out for me and would be very grateful for any tips.
Many thanks,
Nora

Hi there,
Interesting to read that you have a Rule to move Mail into 'All Mail'...
This is not necessary, 'All Mail' contains a 'copy' of every message, including Sent, and every message in your Folders, so you are moving a message into a folder that already contains a copy of that message (if I am guessing correctly).
A quick theory (as an example), if you have 500 sent messages and 250 in your Inbox and Folders, All Mail will contain 750 messages - copies of your 500 sent and 250 received Mail). Again, this is so Google can have 'Labels' instead of Folders on the Web side of Gmail.
Try stopping this Rule from moving messages to All Mail and see if that helps with your syncing...
Regarding your post before the last one, if you have 20,000 sent message alone, my best guess (in ideal situations) is it would take *at least* 3 or 4 days to successfully Sync with Gmail's servers...
Have you thought about Archiving your messages, for instance by year? I say this because syncing 20,000 messages will take an awfully long time, no matter how fast your internet connection is or how streamlined your database is. Also, do you actually need access to 20,000 messages at the click of a mouse? By archiving you can save Disk space and have a faster sync... a little link here:
http://www.it-enquirer.com/main/ite/more/archive_email/
It isn't a serious problem in OS X Mail with IMAP, because every message is a small file (you can see them in ~/Library/Mail) so there is no chance of the database becoming corrupt so badly that your messages are lost... unlike Outlook which stores EVERYTHING in one file (all your eggs in one basket, anyone?) and I have had that happen to clients. Once Outlook decides it cannot read a PST file, that is pretty much the end of the road for your messages!
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Jamie

  • [SOLVED] Mutt having problem connecting to gmail imap

Just yesterday my mutt email was fine connecting to gmail via imap. I didn't touch .muttrc at all. Now when I run mutt it gives the "Connecting to imap.gmail.com ..." message and then times out with the "Connection to imap.gmail.com closed" error and I get an empty inbox. Any ideas on what I should be looking at?
Last edited by mutaphore (2015-01-18 19:19:22)

Offlineimap doesn't get your mail to you quicker - but it definitely does save mutt loading time.  Offlineimap runs as a daemon and keeps a local maildir copy of all your mail.  The main purpose for this is so you can read your mail while offline (hence the name), but an added bonus is that whenever you open mutt, mutt doesn't need to wait for the imap connection/download/sync/whatever - it just reads from the local maildir which is effectively instantaneous*.
EDIT: *often that is.  I do have a 'storage' mailbox with ~5000 emails in it.  When I swtich to that mailbox mutt still takes a second to read the maildir folder.  But if this were in online form only it could take a minute or more.  My inbox which  often holds 50-100 emails loads instantly.

  • Rules problem and sluggishness in Gmail IMAP

I just plugged in my Gmail IMAP settings into Mail, and it is not listening to rules set to move all of my sent mail into a sent folder (into either the "on my mac" or the "gray globe" folders). The mail from me just sits obstinately in the "all mail" or "Inbox" folder.
Also, every time I select an IMAP folder, it decides it gives me the little piechart time indicator symbol and I have to wait 20-30 seconds to see my messages.
    Ideas?

First of all, for the issue w/ the sent/junk/trash/drafts folder - if you select any of those folders in the sidebar, then go to the 'Mailbox' menu and select 'use this mailbox for' - you can manually set those folders to be used as the default folders - so in turn no need to use the rules. -The inbox however should store all incoming messages automatically.
One issue that I need to point out is that for some reason Gmail is placing all the chat logs from Google Talk into your 'all mail' folder...
Now why Gmail IMAP is so horribly slow compared to most other IMAP services, I honestly don't have a clue, and I must add I'm having the exact same problem.

  • BUG: Mail (GMAIL IMAP) no longer connects over ethernet, only wireless

I too was puzzled last night when I couldn't get my gmail account to go online. I did a lot of reading, and tried various things (to no avail), but ultimately decided it was just a configuration error, or combination of other programs running...or maybe even (as read in other posts) Google's servers. I found the server problem unlikely though, since I could also log in via the web interface.
Mysteriously, opening Mail on a separate MBP over either ethernet or wireless was 100% normal...as was the imap connection on my iPad via 3G or wireless...so what was causing my brand new MBAir to choke? Sleep on it, I said to myself.
Well here I am on day 2 of Mail refusing to connect. Connection doctor always shows 'green' next to connection status (Mail was able to connect to the internet), but red for both imap and smtp servers, with messages reading "Mail could not connect to this IMAP/SMTP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in Account preferences. Also verify the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the 'Use SSL' checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences."
I've eliminated the server issue, because my MBP still opened Mail just fine while connected to my network here at home.
Then, just for fun, I decided to unplug my ethernet (which is attached via Apple's own USB Ethernet adapter), and turn on my wireless. Almost instantly, Mail popped to life on my MBAir, and started syncing with gmail/IMAP.
In the two months I have owned this MBAir, getting Mail to work over ethernet had never been a problem. My issues seemed to parallel the recent influx of problems reported with gmail & IMAP.
I still cannot get Mail to access gmail over the USB Ethernet Adapter. What gives, Apple? Anyone else experiencing these symptoms on these new MBAirs?
    Model Name: MacBook Air
    Boot ROM Version: MBA31.0061.B01
    SMC Version (system): 1.66f54

Turns out I was a victim of my own [tight] security. I had a SOCKS proxy enabled on my Ethernet for when I take this laptop on the road...I used it to connect securely to my server back home. Obviously at home my SOCKS proxy was not connecting from within my private network. As soon as I removed the SOCKS proxy, voilá! GMAIL IMAP works perfectly over the USB Ethernet adapter once again.
I hope this serves as a reminder to thoroughly check your network settings before driving yourself mad!
    Cheers!

  • Z10 Issues with GMail Imap / Microsoft Active Exchange

    Hi,
I have seen lots of posts coming in on here and on crackberry.com about issues with emails. But I couldn't find any posts on the issues that I am having.
Just purchased a new Z10, coming from a BB 9900.
I would like to setup my gmail account on here but I am getting unexpected results. I have tried many different ways, gmail, imap, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and pop3.
What I find different from everyone is that I have a bunch of filters set up that auto direct some emails away from the inbox and into labels (folders).  So I know things have changed from the 9900, but the way it happened on there was that a new email would show up in my unified inbox on the BB whether or not it was filtered. Then after reading it, I would have to search for it because it wouldn't actually be stored in the inbox. Which I was fine with.
We'll have my email description setup as "Personal"
    Issues that I am having:
    Imap set up:
    - When I go from hub to my "Personal" box, it is a duplicate of my inbox. Looks the same as my inbox in mail.google.com, all nice and dandy.
    - Emails that go directly to my inbox show up nice and quick and give me a notification in the hub etc.. that an email has shown up.
    - Now when I receive an email that is being filtered. Gmail.com has it right away in my labels. So I know it's there. I can wait the 15/30 minutes that is setup for the sync, but I never get a notification of the email. If I go to the folder (by clicking on the drop down by the email description) then it shows up there with the yellow mail saying that it's a new mail. But there still isn't a notification saying I got a new email.
    So that's IMAP.
    M$ Exchange ActiveSync set up:
    - Initially, going straight to my personal box from the hub makes it look somewhat like what it did on my 9900. Inbox, and filtered messages all showing up in the default view.
    - If I receive a NEW (not part of a conversation) message that is/is not being filtered it shows up in this default view and I get a notification in the hub.
    - Once I read that email, then go back to the default view. IF it is a msg in the inbox, it disappears and the only way I can find it is by going to the drop down then to the Inbox. But this seems to be random, sometimes it stays, sometimes it disappears. Also, if it gets moved directly to the inbox and I get a reply to that message I don't get a notification for a new email.
    - If the email is a filtered email, it stays in the default view.
    - Now if I get an email that is part of a conversation to a filtered email, I don't get a notification that I have a new email, but if I go to it from the hub, it's marked as a yellow mail symbol stating that it is new. Read that email, it stays in the default view.
    So that's M$ EAS.
    Email:
*******@gmail.com, so not a Paid Account or anything, just a regular gmail account. IMAP settings turned on and setup.
    Hub Settings:
    Display Style: conversation
    Display order: name, subject
    display message count: on
    display new message indicator: on
    show filed messages: on
    show sent messages: off
    delete message confirmation: off.
Oh when I tried the gmail setup I believe it just used the same settings as IMAP. Pop3. just a disaster, all my messages were brought in (sent/receieved) marked as unread. Won't even bother with Pop3.
I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong with my setups, or that this is the way it is designed. I really don't want to have to check each folder everytime to see if have a new email. And I don't want to change my gmail setup so that nothing is filtered. I thought I had solved it with the M$ EAS but with the random moving of messages to other directories, it's a no go aswell.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for me it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Curtis

    Hi,
I'm the author of the article linked to above.  I appreciate the reference, but I don't think my article solves the OP's particular issues.  To date, I've not found a way to enable notifications on new content in subfolders.  I think this is a limitation in the BlackBerry 10 email client.
Since the paint is still wet on this OS, we can expect to see some improvements in forthcoming service releases.  CalDAV for example is known by BlackBerry to be broken with Google Calendar.  No ETA to fix at present.  BlackBerry will have to address that, and soon.
I don't yet know if OS 10 is going to gain the traction the BlackBerry needs to survive in the market.  If it does, I suspect we will see some third party email apps appearing in BlackBerry World in the future, with enhanced IMAP functionality.  There's some precedent for this and we've seen similar happen on other mobile platforms.  In any case, until BlackBerry does some email client rewrting, or an enterprising developer plugs the gap, I think the OP's niggle is going to remain.  At the time of writing, BlackBerry World is showing a White Screen of Death.  Figures.
One thing I'd urge all Google Apps users (especially of free accounts) to bear in mind is that Google will be pulling the plug on ActiveSync in the very near future.  I've blogged about this in more detail, in a followup to my previously-mentioned post: Gmail + Google Apps on the BlackBerry Z10.
I hope this clarifies the position, even though the reality is less than satisfactory.

  • Help with Gmail IMAP in Mac Mall: Folders transfered from Exchange server

I'm in the process of migrating a mail account from an Exchange server over to Goggle Apps. I've transfered all old mail and the existing Exchange folder structure over to Gmail. Gmail doesn't recognize folders but instead reads the folder structure as Labels. When the account is subsequently imported into Mac Mail it appears that the orgiginal Exhange folder structure holds on the other side, which was my intent. These folders appear in Mail within the Mailboxes>Inbox.
However, there doesn't seem to be a way to insert a new folder into the Gmail IMAP account within the Inbox folder structure. I have successfully created a new "Mailbox" in Mail, but this appears to get inserted into the local version of the Gmail account much lower on the left hand side bar. It seems that I can pick up the "Mailbox" once it is created and move it up into the intended location, but only as a sub-folder. I am not able to promote it to the desired heirarchy or intended location.
Does anyone have any history with this or possibly a fix or suggestion?
    Thanks!

My recollection is that unless you are a paid Hotmail account member, you cannot use Mail. Do a search within the discussion group, as I am not an expert, but I recall not getting Hotmail for that very reason.
    Perhaps give gmail a try.....
That said....I still need some help with my posting! So please and thank you.

  • Mail won't find emails in gmail imap account

I'm having this problem since I moved to the Mailboxapp on my iPhone.
I changed the gmail account to using imap instead of pop3.
Now, when I search in the Apple Mail app, it doesn't find messages with the "any" search directive.
E.g. searching "theo" with any, won't show the mails contained in the imap inbox, sent or important folders on the gmail imap.
If I search for "theo" with from, it finds the emails in the in the imap inbox. If I search with to, it finds the ones in the sent imap folder.
    Is this expected behaviour?

Thanks Griff and Eric. I tried both and it's still the same.
It just won't display messages matching the search term in the from field when using the any search.
It will only find them when searching with the from criterion.
I also want to point out that I followed these Instructions for setting up Mail for Mailboxapp:
    http://www.mailboxapp.com/help/client-config/mail.app.html
If you do follow those instructions, "Store draft messages on server", "Store sent messages on server" and "Store junk messages on server" will be checked under the Account settings' Mailbox Behaviors' tab.
But searching *should* still work as expected imho.

  • Gmail IMAP on Mac/Exchange on iPhone  HELP!

    Hi.
Hopefully someone can tell me my best option here.  On my iPhone I have my Gmail account set to use the Exchange active sync...however if I try to use the settings I have in my phone for Mail.app the server just times out. Since the iPhone works fine I'm only going to talk about my Mac.
    I'm running 10.8.2
When I first set it up using Preferences > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, I made sure that I cleared out any possible old keychain entries as I used to have this account set up as IMAP on my Mac.  When I first set it up, it simply said that the server (m.google.com) was unavailable (I had that set as both the internal and external server).  In looking at the ports, which were set to 443 and 80, I changed the 80 to 443...that at least got mail checking the server but then it just times out.
The main question is does anyone know how to set up GMail Exchange on Mail?  I have a feeling the issue is getting the proper Internal and External server paths.
If you do you might be able to help....the problem is further complicated by the fact that I'm using Gmail to handle mail from my own domain...so its not [email protected] but [email protected]
Why the settings my phone uses aren't sufficient is beyond me...
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

True. And that doesn't help. It only messes things more. I guess Both Google and Apple want things their own respective ways and that's creating trouble for us.
yes, they do and yes, it does.
I don't have an iphone so don't know how things work there but here is how things work with Mail and gmail.
    1. you mentioned something about suffix. it should be set to
    [Gmail]
    2. go to webmail gmail interface->settings->labs
and enable the "Advanced IMAP controls" lab. then go to settings->labels and remove the "ll Mail" folder from being offered from IMAP download. there is no reason to have it downloaded as all it will do is download everything the second time and eat up your hard drive space. you can also optionally do it with the Spam mailbox.
    3. an important thing to understand is that gmail and mail create their own folders for several things and insist on using them by default.
Gmail default folders: Mail default Folders:
    Sent Mail Sent Messages
    Trash Deleted Messages
there is no way to force webmail gmail to use nondefault folders. but you can do it with Mail. i suggest you do that to keep things synchronized between webmail and Mail
select the "Sent Mail" folder in the IMAP section of gmail. then go to mailbox menu->use this mailbox for->sent
do the same with the "Trash" mailbox in the gmail section and set to use it for Trash.
after this you can delete Sent messages and Deleted messages mailboxes from the gmail IMAP section unless you want to keep looking at them for some reason.
The drafts mailbox is called the same both in Mail and gmail so you don't have to rename it but I suggest you choose the option not to keep drafts on the server. but that's up to you. same for the junk mailbox. I have the option NOT to keep junk mail on the server.
I had to do this one every mac I use to access gmail via Mail but it's all pretty sane and in sync now.

  • Mail not updating to show replied/forwarded on gmail imap

    Hello,
I've been reading about the various issues with Mail in Mavericks and Gmail Imap but none that addresses this. I access my account via imap on iPhone, a Snow Leopard MacBook Pro and Mac Pro running Mavericks. Everything has always worked just like it should - messages marked as replied to or forwarded on all devices when replied / forwarded on one of them. But Mail in Mavericks apparently just ignores this bit when it's not been on the local machine - that is, if I reply from my iPhone or the MacBook, Mavericks Mail does not display a replied/forwarded icon.
    Any help?

It does, but you can do better then that. You can set gmail as exchange, it will give you even more options.
The only thing that you need to know additional to regular stuff, is that instead of gmail you have to use Microsoft Exchange, and the name of google server is m.google.com. Instructions right here.

  • Problems with Gmail IMAP and 'use this Mailbox for..'

Basically trying to re-setup Mail for Gmail IMAP after having to Time Machine back to a previous date after something or other stopped it working. Only thing that remains wrong is the Mail Trash. I have remapped the Drafts and Sent folders correctly, however the trash does not appear.
I am using the Gmail Labs feature that lets you show or hide any of Gmails folders.
If I try and delete a message it doesn't seem to go anywhere - if I delete it again it does dissapear (but I don't know where to!). If I force the Trash to appear in the sidebar (command 5) the little circular progress thing appears when i do the delete, but clicking on the Trash can shows no contents.
Should I 'show' Gmail's Bin and set that for the Trash in Mail?
I've obviously done something wrong here remapping or whatever so can anyone help me to sort it out? Please!

    No ideas?

  • Apple Mail vs. Gmail IMAP disagreeing counts

A friend has two iMacs (10.6.5), iPad & iPhone (iOS 4.2) recently switched to gmail for his primary email service.
The problem is that not all the devices “see” the same Sent, Drafts and Trash mailbox.
Working with other IMAP services, I never see issues like this, so I know this is a gmail specific issue - there’s a disconnect between the way Gmail organizes it’s IMAP mailboxes vs. the way the Apple Mail does.
For instance, when you configure Apple Mail for a gmail IMAP account, it assumes your Sent mailbox will be called “Sent Messages”. And on the gmail web side, a Label always gets created called “Sent Messages”. My experience is that without any intervention, when you send email, it shows up in Apple Mail in the proper “Sent” mailbox, but in gmail it shows up in “Sent Messages”, NOT gmail’s Sent mailbox.
For some reason, with a gmail account, the old trick of Mailboxes > Use this Mailbox for doesn’t work because the options are grayed out.
So, how I’ve improved this situation is to open up PropertyListEditor and edit com.apple.mail.plist. There is a key called ‘MailAccounts’ under which is an “item” representing the Gmail account. Underneath, there’s an entry for ‘SentMessagesMailboxName’. I’ve tried changing this to both “Sent Mail” or “[Gmail]/Sent Mail” and both work in the sense that any email sent from Apple Mail ends up in gmail’s Sent mailbox, and NOT in “Sent Messages”
    Here’s where the mystery deepens.
In my friend’s situation, when I do this, when path is set to [Gmail]/Sent Mail, I see two Sent mailboxes
in Apple Mail, I see 886 messages in the Sent under ‘Mailboxes’, and 823 in ‘Sent Mail’ under GMAIL section
in gmail, the ‘Sent Mail’ mailbox has 651 items and there exists a “[Imap]/Sent Mail” mailbox which has 609 items
When I edit the plist and change the path with PropertyListEditor to just “Sent Mail”, Apple Mail only shows one Sent mailbox with 823 messages items, but is missing the message sent within the past couple days.
Any ideas how to make sense of this?

No real answer to your problem, but I can confirm the problem exists...I've been chasing it forever. Another issue (that is equally as perplexing) is that no matter how you configure deleted message behavior in Apple Mail, when you delete a message it NEVER shows up in the Gmail TRASH folder. If someone would just create a definitive guide for using Gmail and Apple Mail they could probably sell it.
