Should I go convert from WinXP to Mac Leopard ?

I have not used Mac Leopard before and not sure if it is easy to use ? I have tried watching the video but the video is only showing off some amazing features of Leopard but I am still not sure on the filesystem etc. I am used to Unix command as compare to DOS command and am not sure whether it has a command prompt program (for running unix) just like what WinXP does ? Thanks.

I wanted to escape from Microsoft for years before I finally bought a MacBook Pro about 1 1/2 years ago. Though I loved it in general, I was shocked to discover that I had to mess around with all that command line/terminal stuff in order to set up PHP and MySQL (which I never completely resolved). I thought the whole point of using a Mac was user friendliness. I actually found PHP and MySQL easier to set up and tweak on my PC than on my Mac.
Still, I think Mac is better than Microsoft (even XP) overall, even after going through a nightmare install of Leopard. Now that Leopard's up and running, my computer seems to be operating better than ever, apparently with even fewer bugs than I had when I was running Tiger.
I'm thinking of purchasing a program called MAMP PRO, which automatically installs and configures Apache, PHP and MySQL. However, if you're familiar with Unix, then all this stuff is probably easy for you.

  • How tedious is it to convert from windows to mac?

My windows (sony vaio running XP) is dying.  Got the dreaded 3 beeps on start up today...so will be shopping for a new desktop soon.
I have an ipad and iphone that I've owned for about a year now...and I must say I REALLY like them.  Have been contemplating going all mac....but EVERYTHING i do on my desktop is obviously windows based.  My biggies are quicken....i have files that go back 10 years and all my excel docs.  Has anyone recently made the jump from windows to mac...how hard is it really to convert everything over?

Millions have done what you are contemplating, most don't have any issues at all. I f you haven't already go to your local Apple Store and ask your questions and you will get honest replies, I did when I made the switch 7 years ago. I converted from Quicken to iBank which imported my Quicken data extremely easily. As for MS Office, simply get MS Office for Mac and you're set. It's compatible with the Windows version and opening files is the same across platforms.
I would also STRONGLY recommend you look at this Apple Mac Basics article:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbasics/pctomac/
Also when you get a Mac and turn it on for the first time, one the steps it has is asking if you are migrating from a PC to the Mac. Simply choose yes and follow the on-screen prompts and you're set. You can also Google Migration Assistant for Windows for more detailed info if you want.

  • Converting from PC to MAC

    Hi:
I currently operate on a PC and use Adobe Photoshop CS4. I understand that if I move to a MAC I would have to use Adobe Elements 8.
Will I be able to easily move all my files over from the PC to the MAC despite the assumed difference in the programs? Any help is greatly appreciated.

First, why do you think you must use Elements because you are changing to a Mac?  There is a PsCS4 for Mac and I'm not aware of any major differences between it and the Windows version.  So I guess my question is, why Elements?  While you may consider going from PC to Mac an upgrade, going from PsCS4 to Elements is certainly a step the other way.  Just my opinion.

  • Converting from Tape to Mac

I want to edit some tapes from my Sony Handycam DCR-IP7E in iMovie but it cannot detect the camera. Is there any way that I can get the files onto the Mac so I can edit in iMovie?

I have the correct cable it just does not recognise the camera.
As Daniel pointed out: Your camera is NOT compatible with iMovie. Take it back or sell it.
Is there another way to import the tapes?
Sort of. There are two methods:
A: Using a sample application from Apple's Firewire SDK, you can get the MPEG-2 files off the camera and onto the hard drive. Then you can use MPEG Streamclip with Apple's MPEG-2 QT playback plug-in to convert to DV, which you can import to iMovie.
B: Have your camera act as an analog VHS VCR:

  • Converting from Windows to MAC

So I am moving everthing from my windows environment to my new MAC environment.....
I was using a windows home server to to house all my music files, the PC with iTunes had a mapped drive to the folder with the music files.
on the advice from the genuis at my local apple store I copied all the music files to a USB hard drive, then connected the USB drive to the MAC and copied all the files into the music folder on my MAC
When open iTunes it does not show the files or folders and I can't find the "import" command on the new iTunes.  If I search for a song or artist it does find it and I can manually add it to the library from the search box.  I am not intersted in clicking on 3500 songs to manually add them all.
    Thoughts, advice, comments?
Every thing I have used so far with Apple just works and I love that, so I know there is a way to do this without driving back down to the genius bar and asking them.
    Thanks in advance

  • Sound VI convert from PC to Mac

I don't really understand the help files for using a PC and creating a Mac complatible VI that will play sound files. I am a new to Labview 8.6 and I have created a VI to play sound files on a PC. Now I need it to work on a Mac and I'm having trouble figuring out how to do that. Could someone go into detail on how to do this?

I have not tried this in recent versions of LV, but in the past I usually had to change parameters like the sampling rate and stereo/mono, 8-bit/16-bit, ... The default values tend to be different but the VIs themselves work on both platforms.  You can determine programmatically which OS you are using by a property node (I do not recall the property name at the moment) and use that to select a case with the appropriate values for the sound parameters.

  • From Windows to Mac, as a developer?

    Greetings.
Seeing as I am moving away from 'hardcore gaming' and more into game development, I have played with the thought of selling my gaming pc and buy an imac. At our school, we have borrowed macbook pros, and while I think the mac in itself is really slow, it feels like ios is a very friendly designer operative system.
Is there anyone else here "in my shoes" who have converted from windows to mac? It might sound silly, but if I actually decide to go for it, I have to sell my current pc to afford an imac. The prices should be about the same, so that's not a problem. What's kind of scary is the big leap from being a native windows user.
Anyone here who might know a great deal about both? Would there be a direct + in using mac instead of windows?
I am using Unity and Photoshop, and there are no windows-exclusive software I am using.
Thanks in advance to anyone taking their time to answer.
    - Mothil

I don't know what was wrong with your borrowed MacBook Pro. Don't let a misconfigured school machine cloud your judgement.
But why an iMac? I suggest last year's Mac Mini. You could use it with your current monitor. You can also get a new MacBook Pro. My 13" 2011 is my primary machine. You just have to do your research before buying a new machine. Apple is going 110% into the consumer market. Make sure you don't buy a machine that is $100 cheaper but half the power. Double-check the memory. When Apple says the memory is "upgradeable", they mean you can pay double to upgrade it at time of purchase. After that, you are stuck with it.
The biggest plus to using a Mac is that it is a requirement for iOS.

I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open these documents up from the DVD storage and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for your quick response.  I should add....it worked before.  When I previously inserted the two DVDs into this remote drive, and I went into finder, I could click on the "remote device" line and see all my saved documents (excel, word, etc) on the DVD and open them on the Mac.  Now I cannot see them, when I try to open them on the Mac, nothing happens, nothing is displayed.  I just re-tested the remote DVD drive with a CD and, no problem, it opened up the CD via iTunes and I cold play the CD.  SO......I know the remote DVD drive (it's an LG by the way) is fine, it's something to do with some settings on my mini mac, especially where I could open it previously.  I do not remember changing any settings since then.
When I go into system preferences and click on CD/DVD it gives me options of how to open up a music CD (default is iTunes), a DVD (default is iMovie), etc.  The problem is my DVD is all miscellaneious files/documents.  I just want to be able to see them in the finder.  I also tried to open them via microsoft word, from the remote disk and again, it could not open the drive, even though some of the documents were microsoft word documents.  Again, I was able to open them previously and the DVD is not corrupted in any way.
    Any additional advice?
    Thank you!

  • HT5409 can i convert movies from iPad to mac laptop

Ihave  download a movie from ipad but it will not play on my mac air laptop with quicktime installed..??

Ihave  download a movie from ipad but it will not play on my mac air laptop with quicktime installed..??
Are you going to give us any additional clues as to what you are really asking here?
    1) The "HT5409" in your subject title reference implies you are dealing with AVCHD content. If true, then how did you transfer them to your iPad and how did you transfer them from your iPad to your your MacBook Air platform? As the HT409 topic clearly stated, this can be very important. In addition, how are the files stored? For instance , have you extracted the MPEG-4 AVC content as transport streams or is the content still in the device recorded file form? Are you trying to edit the content or convert it to M4V, MP4, or MOV files directly?
    2) The "can i convert movies from iPad to mac laptop" part of your subject title is confusing. Yes, AVCHD files can be converted to simpler MPEG-4 AVC content that is compatible with all current and most older Mac computers and Apple mobile devices in MOV, MP4, and/or M4V file formats. However, how you do this will depend on the current form of the data and the target settings you wish to employ to ensure compatibility with the various target device possibilities. Further, non-AVCHD content (e.g., HD iPad video recordings) can also be downconverted to simpler settings in a similar manner if needed or required if that is your questing.
    3) Depending on your operating system, both AVCHD and MPEG-4 AVC content should already be compatible with QT X v10.2 and v10.3 players if properly transferred to your laptop from the recording device. And, even if improperly transferred, may still be converted to useable/compatible formats as long as the file itself has not been corrupted by your, as yet, unspecified workflow.
    4) What does "will not play on my mac air laptop with quicktime installed" mean here? Are you trying to play an AVCHD movie in the QT 7 player or one of the QT X players? If the latter, which one? Are you getting any error message? If so, what are they? If not playing in your main user account on the computer, does it play useing a different account? Do the files play in other, third-party multimedia players?
Basically, your question is the equivalent of my saying my car won't start but failing to mention whether or not I am out of gas, my battery is dead, or that I have removoed the distributor cap, wires, or spark plugs from the engine. To properly solve the issue we need all possible information that you can provide describing exactly what you are doing, how you are doing it, what is not working as your expect it should, and what your goals are. In cases where you cannot answer such questions, it is often helpful to simply post/upload a sample "problem" file and let other users here examine it to determine the problem and/or suggest a specific solution for your particular system/configuration combination.

  • Do I have to get all new apps if I convert from PowerPC Mac to Intel?

Do I have to get all new apps if I convert from PowerPC Mac to Intel?

but they perhaps loosely paraphrase " How compatible your application is with Rosetta depends on the type of application it is. An application such as a word processor that has a lot of user interaction and low computational needs is quite compatible. An application that requires a moderate amount of user interaction and has some high computational needs or that uses OpenGL is most likely also quite compatible. One that has intense computing needs isn’t compatible. This includes applications that need to repeatedly compute fast Fourier transforms (FFTs), that compute complex models for 3-D modeling, or that compute ray tracing."  as including Photoshop among apps that have " intense computing needs " - maybe the wiki author found that to be the case on an older machine?.
Very loosely!  Actually that quote from Wikipedia is wrong with regard to Adobe Photoshop and should be corrected (at least as it applies to version 9, CS2, after which, later versions, starting with CS3 do not need Rosetta in any event).
While I am not sure about the rest of that quoted phrase (acually in most of my posts on this forum indicating my solution for running PowerPC applications [Installing Snow Leopard with Rosetta into Parallels] in Lion or Mt. Lion, I do note: "Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization." I do, however, see this as a virtualization problem and not a Rosetta problem (as opposed to these programs running on a computer that can actually boot into Snow Leopard and run these programs in emulation, where Rosetta should not pose a problem).
My experience with Adobe Photoshop is limited to CS2, which is now available for free download from the Adobe website.  My uses for this program are limited, such as when one frustrated Mt. Lion upgrader noted that Apple should post a flag about the loss of Rosetta (see my graphic posted above).
But my understanding is that Adobe Photoshop (at least up to version CS2) does not require any rendering, which could be hampered and slow in virtualization and perhaps additionally with Rosetta.
Use of Photoshop 9 (CS2) appears to be similar to use of Freehand MX and none of the users of either of these powerpc applications have come back with any complaints after my suggestion to them on how to continue to run these powerpc apps in Lion or Mt. Lion.

leave as is and add NTFS driver to write to the drive / migrate maybe / reading NTFS drives isn't always perfect, some times external drive case has trouble mounting or staying mounted and suffers slow copy speed after awhile or with large files which is why I suggest Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X.

In converting a two page chart from Word for Mac to Pages, only page 1 converts. But because of the way I built the chart, I can't cut and paste one page at a time from Word and then convert.
