Should i go with a dell or apple

ok i got a job this summer to save up for a computer for school this year i have been doing tons of research and i am almost positive i want a apple macbook but i want some honest opinions because every time i look people are always fighting over which is better now i have some questions about apple in a windows world will my computer connect to my linksys router, will i have tons problems with doing papers for school, is mac extremly easy to get use to, is the macbook good for doing photo and video editing and is it worth buying a macbook or should i go with a dell or shouls i wait a littlw while for upgrades to the macbook. Also price wise i plan on buying a Macbook 2ghz with 1gb of ram and a 80gb hard drive with iwork installed
  Windows XP

Okay, so it's obvious that some people are frustrated with the whole MacBook/Apple experience...but it's okay
So maybe fekimoki does belong in a Dell forum, but at least he's providing some sort of input from "the windows side".
Parker731, I was in the same situation as you just a few months ago. I'm a new college student, and I was making the choice whether to stick with Windows or whether to purchase my first Apple computer. Needles to say, I went ahead and purchased a Macbook, and it's awesome. I can honestly say that I'm never going back to Windows again.
Of course, it's not for everyone. However, based on your questions, it seems like a good choice. My 2.0GHz 80GB Macbook (similar to the one you're considering buying, minus the iwork) is great for photos, videos and school papers, and is extemely easy to get used to. I wouldn't know about the router, though; I use a netgear, but linksys should be okay.
You're hearing about a lot of problems in these forums, but don't let it discourage you. The people with the problems are the ones who turn to the forums for help, and they represent a small minorty of the millions of users worldwide.
Or, buying a Windows computer is always an option. Not exactly preferred in these Apple forums, but the choice is COMPLETELY YOURS! However, like most of the others here, I would recommend a Toshiba as opposed to a Dell. The price of the Dell right now might look attractive with all the school specials going on, etc. But if you go the windows route, Toshiba's quality is superior to Dell's and you'll be glad you picked it instead.
Best of luck!

Why did my charger from Verizon already go bad..bought another one and it went bad..now the phone will not charge..what a disappointment and a hassle..should have stuck with Apple..only had the phone 2 months. Hope they will exchange it!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is either a Phone issue or an Electrical issue in your home.!   when charging Do you always use the same electrical  outlet?  or did you try others..
You will know or should know if there are any issues with your other Electronics.. that you Plug into it..
If it is the s5 which it sounds like it could be then the Local Verizon store at there Discretion will determined if replacement is needed you have a 1 year Manufactures Warranty that covers for things like what your Describing I would take it too your local store see if they'll get you a Replacement or you may have to go through Samsung..
But I would Try another OUTLET just to see if your phone charges with it.. And Good Luck b33

No one here would know Apple's plans. But, if past history holds true, expect a new model iPhone sometime between now & the fall.

If you purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive, it will only work with select Apple devices. It won't work, for example, on my Late 2011 model that has a SuperDrive built-in, but it will work with an Air, Retina model, new 'drive-less' iMacs, etc.
As far as I know, though, you can only hack the drive to work with some other Apple devices, but not with Windows PCs. Which is a shame as other, less expensive DVD/CD devices will work with just about any machine.

Yes, you can find it at any electronics store or online. You may even have one lying around as many devices use it.

What apple certification should I start with?
I am confused with which certifications I should work on first to be able to work as a technician and application support individual.

I would start with the basic Mac Integration. It's a quick and easy test to see if you know the basics. If you can pass this, then move foward from there.

If you downloaded and ran the installer, you will probably have beta 12 and RC1 installed, you do not need both and can uninstall beta 12. Just make sure you do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data" is you uninstall beta 12, that option will delete all of your Firefox user data such as bookmarks and passwords.

does the refirbised iPad 3 have all the bugs out or should I stick with the iPad 2?

There a few reports of issues, but those expereincing them are in a very small minority. I've never had issues with either of mine.
My suggestion would be the refurbished 3rd generation. A refurbished unit will have had a little extra testing and basically be a new iPad. Also, the 3rd gen has a faster processor and a better screen than the 2, and will run Siri (the 2 won't).

  • Do I need to clean my computer like I did with my Dell?

Hi I have a MacBook Air
I was wondering if I need to clean up records etc like I did on my old Dell computer. I know very little about computers.
    Thanks Dennis

No. Any one or any thing that recommends you "clean" your Mac should elicit a visceral negative reaction.
If you're having trouble with your Mac explain what it is. Make no attempt to "clean" it, unless you want to create real problems. For more information read below.
There will always be threats to your information security associated with using any Internet - connected communications tool:
You can mitigate those threats by following commonsense practices
Delegating that responsibility to software is an ineffective defense
Assuming that any product will protect you from those threats is a hazardous attitude that is likely to result in neglecting point #1 above.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources.
Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
"Questionable sources" include but are not limited to spontaneously appearing web pages or popups, download hosting sites such as C net dot com, Softonic dot com, Soft pedia dot com, Download dot com, Mac Update dot com, or any other site whose revenue is primarily derived from junk product advertisements.
If you need to install software that isn't available from the Mac App Store, obtain it only from legitimate sources authorized by the software's developer.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iCloud, iTunes, or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose:Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
The same precaution applies to Adobe Flash Player. Newly discovered Flash vulnerabilities appear almost weekly.
Beware spontaneous popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > check "Block popup windows".
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but unsolicited popups are commonly used to deceive people into installing unwanted software they would never intentionally install.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever receive a popup window indicating that your Mac is infected with some ick or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
The same goes for a spontaneously appearing dialog insisting that you upgrade your video player right this instant. Such popups are frequently associated with sites that promise to deliver "free" movies or other copyrighted content that is not normally "free".
The more insistent it is that you upgrade or install something, the more likely it is to be a scam. Close the window or tab and forget it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. Most of these attempts are pathetic and are easily recognized, but that hasn't stopped prominent public figures from recently succumbing to this age-old scam.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Help with a tough decision Apple is forcing me to make.

    Hi everyone,
So, like many of you, I have been patiently waiting for about five months now for a Mac Pro refresh. With the newer cpu's, gpu's, and hds out now, I was expecting to have seen them update it by now, but they haven't. They also refuse to announce anything about when they might, in a greedy attempt to get people to pay top dollar for old stock. I need to get a new system for 4k video editing now. When it was first released I was impressed by the value. Building a comparable system cost about the same. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore, and since they haven't upgraded the system, or lowered their prices to compete, I feel like I need to abandon the dream and look else where.  Anybody disagree? Is there any reason why the Mac Pro still can compete at a $5,000 price point? If not, any recommendations on what I should get?

It is easy to start with as 4,1 $495 and have 4k and even 5k.

Apple is not interested in Nvidia the way customers are. A Classic Mac Pro instead of trashy 6,1 design is still holding its own and doing better, with affordable 6-core 3.4GHz processors and other add-ons, even dual GPUs (AMD and Nvidia, with help of add'l PSU)
Thermal throttling a workstation GPU or processor under load? Unhead of?
The bottleneck has been with spinning disk drives. Some users have tried using 2 x PCIe SSD controllers using four  SSDs to try to create large fast SSD arrays of 2-4TB and 1200-1800MB/sec.

    - Which basically is using Apple and Samsung PCIe-SSD devices to get 1200MB/sec out of a single device (256GB to 1TB) without controllers, just a PCIe adapter. Funny but even a 2006 1,1 have had this ability in firmware and logicboard all along since 2005 to support these small M.2 form factor devices.
Right now ebay for Apple 500-768-1000GB or an XP941 retail $400-750 (a small 256GB + adapter for $285 900MB/sec to give  you a taste).

  • Laserwriter IIf-can it be used with a Dell PC?

I have the Laserwriter printer which worked perfectly with a very old Apple laptop untill a few weeks ago.
As I do not have the laptop any more, and this is such a fantastic quality machine, I am wondering if the printer can be used with a Dell PC running Windows XP which is used to print out pages from the web.
I have a G5 machine linked to an Epson colour printer so I am still using Macs.
The printer has an Appletalk connection which was used to connect to the Apple laptop, olso a connector that looks like SCSI and an RS232c connector.
Can I make this printer work again or do I just throw it in the bin like the laptop?
    Thanks for reading

I currently have five printers for the use of the Macs at my home and workshop. Each is a stand-alone Network Printer. Two of these printers, a LaserWriter IIg and an HP 2550n connect directly to an Ethernet cable. The LaserWriter IIg prints using AppleTalk-over-Ethernet, the HP 2550n prints using LPR/LPD (Internet Line Printer Remote protocol).
The others are AppleTalk/LocalTalk printers. Rather than being attached to a specific Mac, each printer presents itself on my home Network and is available for any print job from any computer, regardless of whether certain computers are on or off at the moment. These three AppleTalk/LocalTalk printers are serviced by Farallon Ethermac iPrint LT converters. One side plugs into an Ethernet cable, the other side plugs into a PhoneNet LocalTalk network.
Another way of thinking about this is to call the Farallon box an Ethernet-capable Print Server for multiple AppleTalk/LocalTalk printers.
If you had already made the leap to Broadband, you would have the Ethernet infrastructure (a Hub, Switch, and/or Router/Gateway) in place to get multiple computers onto your Broadband Internet connection. Plug in a Farallon or AsanteTalk box and one more Ethernet cable and your printer becomes available to all your computers. Setting up such a network is described in this document:
106658- Creating a small Ethernet network
I am strongly biased against the "One printer per computer" way of thinking. It comes from PC's and printers that could easily connect with a parallel cable from a single computer to a single printer. USB printers (used without a print server or Printer Sharing) have helped maintain this distorted view of the world.
Today's feature-rich (and possibly colorful) printers should be accessible to all the computers nearby, not limited to a single computer that happened to have the right plug and a space next to it on the table.
Jim may argue that you can buy a used Laser Printer for each of your computers for $20 each, and that is certainly another way to look at it.

    Problems with Photoshop CS2
I originally purchased this software several years ago. At time I was running Microsoft Windows XP.
    This computer recently was replaced with a Dell running Windows 8.I reloaded my CS2 on this computer & it ran fine with a few exceptions as follows;
when the software comes up initially I get a message that says “could not complete your request because of program error”. Hitting OK allows me to continue using the software .
When I try to activate a function using CTLR or ALT keys I get this message “required application failed to load and the product cannot continue. Please reinstall the application”. This causes the application to abort.
Reloading my CS2 continues to generate the same messages when I depress the CTLR or ALT keys.

Your original copy is obsolete and Adobe is offering a free replacement you are entitled to. Download and use that and that should clear it up for you.

  • Will my mid 2010  macbook pro work with a dell monitor

I need to buy an external display for my MacBook Pro (mid 2010).  I'm considering a dell UltraSharp U2412M 24-inch.  Will this be compatitble?  I tried a ViewSonic and couldn't get my Mac to play nice re: resolution.  Will I have any better luck with the Dell?  (And yes, if I could afford it, I'd replace my Apple Cinema display in a heartbeat, but that stays at work and I must go...)  thankyou!

I think it will work.  You would need a mini displayport to (single link) DVI adapter to hook up that monitor.
Not sure what kind of problems you had with the ViewSonic but I'm guessing the Dell is probably a better monitor anyhow.

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
The first step should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
