Should i install mac osx or keep os 9.2.2?

Ok when i got my powerbook it had 10.2 on it but it only had 64 megs of ram. It ran sluggish but i did like having osx finally and the never crashing was pretty cool bit it was too slow and i am sure memory played a big part of that. My question is, now i have 320 megs of ram, should i keep os9 or go to x? I have a 10.3 cd which i heard was faster then 10.2. All i use this computer for is the internet and a few older games, should i even bother? With the new memory and os9 it runs very well and i am happy with it. Just having the new system makes it not seem as outdated. I wouldnt worry about upgrading the os til i get a new harddrive anyways, which will most likely be a 40 gig 5400 rpms to replace my stock 6 gig 4200 rpm. Also i have the lombard that wont let u have ram in the upper slot for osx. Can u put ram in the upper slot after the install of osx is done? Thanks in adavance for the answers, you guys are great!
Powerbook G3 Lombard DVD/CD, 400 MGHZ 6 GIG hardrive, 320 RAM   Mac OS 9.2.x

LM,
Since the Lombard natively supports 10.3 and you want to have OSX on the powerbook, no reason not to update from 10.2 > 10.3. As with any OS upgrade, make sure you have backups so you can return to your previous configuration if necessary...and this includes OSes.
I would install the 256MB in the lower slot, then test your installed 10.2. If OK, put the 64MB in the top slot and test. If it will not start up properly and/or freezes during use, remove the 64MB module.

  • Problem installing Mac OSX on my new MacBook hard drive...

    Hi,
i am beside myself again...(i just visited my local Genius bar this afternoon). Any help would be most appreciated! :o)
i purchased a 2.5 inch SATA Fujitsu 120GB laptop hard drive for my new MacBook. Followed the awesome* instructions on "how to replace/upgrade hard drive", and took out the original Toshiba HD. What the instructions* failed to mention was that i would eventually need to use a Torx screwdriver (star-shaped) to remove the caddy/carriage from the Toshiba HD. Got that the next day and replaced the Toshiba 80GB with my new 120GB Fujitsu drive..., it slipped into place nicely but i did notice that the Toshiba had four short wires protruding out to the right of the contacts, which my new Fujitsu didn't have... hmmmm...?!
anyways, tried to install Mac OSX on the new drive, booted up with the install disc... went thru' chosing the language (English), agreed to the second step... but when it came time to install, there was NO icon at all in the box where i am asked where i want to install it!!!
so i go to disk utilities, and see that my Fujitsu HD is indeed recognized, but none of the buttons in first aid are active... so i can't check it.
i figured that had to do with the four little wires, so i replaced the original Toshiba and made a reservation with Genius Bar to ask for assistance.
this afternoon, i explained my problem and was told the four wires have NOTHING to do with it... Lawrence (the genius) told me to (actually, first he said Apple does not recommend my doing this... and that i should go to a 3rd party computer store such as Dino to get help!) go back to disk utilities and partition, then erase this drive and then i will see the icon for this drive in the install box.
Well i did everything i was told to do and... still, there is no icon for my Fujitsu HD! :o(
I was able to partition, after which there was a disc0 under the Fujitsu drive on the left side of the disk utilities. When i go to system profiler, and click on ATA... it too shows the Fujitsu drive... but i cannot install because there is NOTHING to click on at the installation step! the "continue" button is not active and only the "back" button is actively mocking me!!!
i know many of you have successfully upgraded your hard drive... what am i doing wrong? Would a different brand work better? I know Seagate is quite popular, and OWC sells a Western Digital version as well as a Hitachi... do those four little wires make a difference? Would the Seagate come with those wires???
i am going crazy... thanks, and sorry for the long post, just wanted to let you know what i've done!
    blue skies,
ps. please feel free to email me at [email protected] if you think that would be better! :o)

    Hi,
...after getting back from school, my MacBook was STILL in the process of verifying and "supposedly" repairing... since i was gone for over 10 hours, i finally assumed the drive was either defective or just incompatible, and quit disk utility.
...this morning i went out and bought a new Seagate 120GB SATA (they didn't have 160GB SATA drives, only 160GB ultra-ATA drives) 2.5 inch HD. This one DID have those four wires to the right of the contacts... (i don't know how important they are), and after changing and exchanging the Toshiba/Fujitsu HDs, it was a breeze putting in the new Seagate drive.
Erased > patritioned > and sure enough, the icon showed up and the biggest smile showed up on my face as i finished installing! :o)
I contacted the original seller of my fujitsu hd (it was a 2.5 inch, 120GB, serial ATA notebook drive) and he was kind enough to say "just pack it up and send it back for a refund!" (minus shipping and re-stocking fees of course! :o)
Just wanted to mention that, the fujitsu hd WAS recognized by disk-utility and at the bottom left of the window it said that the fujitsu was "GUID partitioned"..., so i am still scratching my head as to why it didn't work?!
I want to thank everyone that offered advice, it was helpful and i feel more comfortable with my MacBook after this trying and very frustrating episode! :o)
    blue skies,

  • How to make a image file from Pre installed Mac osx ? "PLEASE HELP :("?

hey guys ..Thanks u for the time.
So i have this eMac which has crashed and i have got may hands on another eMac.. and it works
... the only problem is.. I can take my eMac to the working eMac to do Target Mode or any thing...
    So Help me..
My question is .. Is there a way to make a .DMG image file from pre installed mac osx OR
Is there a way to may a recovery disc??

You can use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy everything from the working eMac onto the non-working eMac while the working eMac is running. If your eMac will still do target mode into the working one, you can download the above software, select the booted drive as the source drive, and your eMac's drive as the target, however it is possible this will not work.
When you say your eMac crashed, what exactly happened?  It is possible that the hard drive in your eMac failed or is failing, so in order to get it running again you would need to replace the hard drive.  On the eMac, this repair is somewhat involved, and you have to be very careful because it exposes the CRT, which has several areas which can be extremely dangerous to touch if not properly handled.  CRTs retain a great deal of voltage, even when unplugged, sometimes for weeks, and they can give you a nasty shock if you touch them in the wrong place.
Also keep in mind that cloning from the working computer to the non-working computer will ERASE any data that you have stored on that eMac, so if you don't have it backed up anywhere, you may want to attempt that with target mode before proceeding.
    Good luck!

  • I want to go back to Snow Leopard but I get "you have to install mac osx.app 23.1.1

I have a new 21.5 iMac I just purchased July 9 so I was able to download Lion for free under the up-to-date program.  After installing Lion I decided I wanted to go back to Snow Leopard for various reasons. When I restart with the original Snow Leopard DVD that came with my machine and holding the C key down, I get the window for Mac OS X install DVD.  I click the icon to install SL and another window pops up stating "You can't use this version of the application. Install Mac OSX.app with this version of Mac OSX. You have to install Mac OSX.app 23.1.1"  To answer the question before hand....I don't have a time machine backup.

Thanks for all your help guys. I had trouble with my first install of Lion, it seemed buggy and when I tried some of the suggestions you offered, my machine did not always react the way it should have. I thought that was weird because it's a new iMac, only three weeks old. Pondini pointed me in the right direction and I think Lion is stable now. This worked after a few tries, not sure why I wasn't getting consistent results but it worked eventually.
    1. Shut the computer down.
    2. Hold "command" and "R" and turn on the computer (I believe this is recovery HD from the internet because it wasn't working from my hard drive)
    3. After a few unsuccessful tries, and repeating #1 and #2, I finally got a window to reinstall Lion. This took about an hour to download and after that things went as expected.
As long as Lion is more stable than it was on my first install, which it seems to be now, I'll just stay with it. After this experience, I would say "make sure you need the features in Lion, and that all your current programs are compatible with Lion before you forge ahead."
    Thanks again

  • Just installed mac osx snow leopard upgrade and connected my printer to it too, and realized I have no sound anymore

Just installed mac osx snow leopard upgade and connected my printer too, and realized I have lost sound!   Can anyone help?

In case I misunderstood, did you mean that the 10.6.3 version of Snow Leopard was the upgrade?  If so you need to update via 10.6.6 to 10.6.8.  These updates can correct minor system upsets.
And ... did you also repair permissions both before and after you upgraded.   You should do this when you progress via 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 too.

  • APPLE ID TROUBLE. I NEED PREVIOUS OWNERS APPLE ID TO RE-INSTALL MAC OSX ON MY COMPUTER =-PLEASE HELP-=

So 2-3 weeks ago I was deleting some files off my Macbook Pro. All of the sudden my computer crashed, and switched the
language, and the screen was flashing. After trying to fix it, and figuring out the problem, I could not figure it out so I decided to re-
install MAC OSX. I erased my whole hardrive and went to the title screen. It wanted me to enter my APPLE ID, but it wanted me to
enter the apple id that was for the PREVIOUS owner. Which I had no clue (it also wanted the password.) So now I am stuck.
I don't know if I should take it to the apple store or what, but this is very annoying. I really need someone's help. Please help me!
    Thankyou, God Bless

    ralph40,
when you bought your 13-inch Mid 2009 MacBook Pro from the person on Craigslist, did you also receive two grey installation DVDs with it? They would have originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro; one has a bootable version of Mac OS X for your model (either 10.5.7 or 10.6.0, depending upon when it was manufactured), and the other has your model’s Apple Hardware Test and its iLife apps. If you didn’t receive these two grey installation discs from the seller, then you can purchase a replacement pair from Apple.
If you have either the two grey installation DVDs or the white retail Snow Leopard DVD, and your internal disk is now completely erased (including its recovery partition), then you can reïnstall Mac OS X from the DVD, and associate the MacBook Pro with your Apple ID, which will end the association with the previous owner’s Apple ID. Once Mac OS X is reïnstalled, run Software Update to get to 10.5.8 (from 10.5.7) or 10.6.8 (from the grey 10.6.0 disc or the white 10.6.3 disc), If you’d installed 10.5.7, then you’ll need to install Snow Leopard from the white retail disc to get yourself to 10.6.8. Once you have 10.6.8 installed, you can then download Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks through the Mac App Store if you wish.
If any of the apps on your MacBook Pro had been purchased through the previous owner’s Apple ID, then note that you’ll need to purchase them yourself through your own Apple ID, since apps downloaded through the Mac App Store (including, but not limited to, Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks) are non-transferable. Any apps that were purchased through the Mac App Store using your own Apple ID will be redownloadable gratis by holding down an Option key when you select the Purchased tab.

  • If I buy a new pc intel i7 CPU... can i install Mac OSX Lion?

can buy a new pc intel box + Mac OS from Apple store and I can just:
    - put the DVD mac osx into the DVD and
    - boot up the machine and start up with DVD and it will install Mac OSX ?
    Thanks

    No for three reasons:
    1) Mac OSX can only be installed on an Apple computer as per the licensing agreement.
    2) There are no DVDs available for OS X Lion.
    3) The boot sequence from the USB stick will not allow you to install on a PC, not even to format the drive to OS X Journaled.
Just buy a Mac if you want to use one. The user experience is based around the symbiosis of software and hardware (which is something you should surely understand as an app developer. If you don't, you won't get far at all).
Trust me, you won't regret spending a little more on a quality product that will last and retain its value.

  • Cannot Install Mac OSX on this Computer!! HELPPPP!

Well here is the situation. I have a PowerMac G4 (Digital Audio). i had it upgraded a year ago to a 1.53Ghz G4 Processor, 1.5 GB Ram, I have a 160GB HD, and a 40GB HD. All the firmware is up to date. i went to Install leopard and the OS didn't recognise my system configuration. i called Apple and well all i got was " That I basically made a custom PC and Leopard will not recognise the Hardware and configuration. "Cannot Install Mac OSX on this Computer" was the message I got
So I had to revert Back to Jaguar and I'm hating it. Any help on this one, or should I cut my loses and sell Leopard?

am currious too as i have a g4 dual processor 800 and am wondering if it will install on it. the dp has plenty of hp to run it. if yours is showing as a 1.5 in profiler should install. but one glitch could be many sonnet upgrades do a trade off and a faster processor but they down clock the fsb speed to get it. check and see if fsb is at least 133. i do pc service for a living and love mac for my own use but apple is a bit arrogant on it's software as to install specs and not offering a uninstaller option. on that windows is a lot more friendly and flexable.

After installing Mac OSX Snow Leopart 10.6.3 my HP Photosmart C5500 won't scan to computer.  The printer is working. What do I have to do to be able to scan again?

Often, you have to download updated vendor software drivers when you switch operating systems. HP doesn't list a C5500 on their web site, however, here's the link to the OS X 10.6 C5540 software.  If you have one of the other C55xx models, look for the updated driver/scan software on their software/driver download section of HP.Com.

  • When I am re-installing the Mac OSX snow leopard onto an older Mac I run into the window that says select the disk where you want to install Mac OSX but nothing is there to select

I am trying to re-install the Mac OSX snow leopard onto an older I mac with a new hard drive.  I run into the "select the disk "where you want to install Mac OSX but there is nothing in the window to select. Any advice?

After you install a new hard drive, you need to boot to another drive to initialize it to MAC OS Extended (journaled) format and create the partition(s) on the drive. You do this using Disk Utility. Otherwise, the mac operating install process doesn't see a formatted disk to install to.

  • I'm trying to install Mac OSX on an external drive with my Mac Mini

A few days ago, I picked up my new Mac Mini. I'm using the install disk included with the Mini in an attempt to install Mac OSX 10.4.5 onto my external hard drive - a LaCie d2 200GB.
The installer knows the LaCie is there - but it won't let me install it there. I had no problem doing this with my last Mac (Power Mac G4). Does anyone have any suggestions?
Mac Mini Duo Core 1.66Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   LaCie d2 Firewire Hard Drive 200GB

If you are using an Intel mac mini you need to change the partition scheme. Without doing this the Intel Macs cannot boot from the drive.
To do this you need to open Disk Utility, select your drive (not the partition), then select the Partition tab. In there you'll see an Options… button. Click on it and change the partition scheme to GUID Partition Table. Click OK and then apply the reparitioning.
Please be aware that by making this change you will be able to boot your Intel Mac from the drive although a PowerPC drive will no longer be able to use the drive as a boot drive.

  • Quicktime Player states "You can't open the application QuickTime because the Classic environment is no longer supported."  I just installed Mac OSX Snow Leopard.  What do I need to do?

I just installed Mac OSX (10.6.8) and can not get Quick time player to work.  When I go to the Apple site to download a version that will work, it states that Quick Time Player automatically comes with OSX.  What do I need to do to use Quick Time Player with 10.6.8

Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl923
Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link  even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
(Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".)

  • Installing Mac OSX Leopard Server 10.6 on a Mac Air

    Hi
Im trying to install Mac OSX Server 10.6 on a Mac Air which have Lion developer preview 4 on it, i try to install from
a .dmg file thats stored in the downloads folder when it runs it give me a message "resturt to begin installation" with a
restart button, i click it and then computer restarts and nothing happens why ?
also the server file is big 7 GB so i failed to burn it on dvd or copy to external hard disk and install from there

You will want to use a external double-layer (DL) DVD disk that you've recorded, or use an external disk configured to boot the distro.
Also make a full backup of your boot disk before you load this, as there is no "downgrade" option to get back to whatever version of Snow Leopard client you might be using on the box.
Please (also) read the HT4313 support article.
    And for completeness...
This particular configuration isn't supported by Apple.
Mac OS X Server doesn't "like" DHCP addressing, and that can be common on portables.
