Was wondering when I go into Control Panel and click on add and remove, well question is, all those old updates, should I keep them or is it safe to remove them??

Keep them this is one place where it is advised to keep the old one as archived as a safe measure to protect from newer driver failures.

  • Hello. My safari (and i keep it updated) cannot open PDF files. Should i install Adobe Reader and which version????? I have Mac Book Pro running OS 10.9

My safari (and i keep it updated) cannot open PDF files.Should i install Adobe Reader and which version????/ I have Mac Book Pro running OS 10.9
    Please help me!!!!

    Back up all data.
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, there should be a setting in its preferences such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected. Otherwise do as follows.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others — I don't have a complete list.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Is it okay to delete old updates of itunes?

Just cleaning my machine and was wondering if it was possible to delete the old updates in add/remove programs. I have the 11/17/05, 1/10/06, 6/28/06 and the latest version 8/6/06. Is it okay to delete the previous versions?

    Those are not iTunes.
Those are the iPod Updaters to update the Firmware on the iPod.
If your is working fine, you can delete them.
However, you should keep the latest version yours has.

  • Software Update server keeps downloading updates when set not to

When I first setup our server (10.5.x) for software update, I looked over the option to to uncheck the box for automatically downloading updates from Apple. Since then, it has downloaded pretty much everything. I've unchecked that option and also selected it to delete old updates. It keeps downloading updates and won't delete older updates. We've since upgraded to 10.6.2. Same thing. I've even manually deleted ALL of the updates only to watch them all come back. Any clues?

Welcome to the wonderful world that is the Software Update Service
I have the same problem and have yet to find a sensible answer to this problem. I have three Macs at home and only need a small proportion of the updates that Apple supply yet no matter what I do, I can't seem to stop SUS downloading everything even though I don't want it and have told it not to download.
Best of luck getting any sense out of Apple on this. I'm going to try a home made solution to get round this problem.

  • I keep gettin updates from my app store but yet when I go in and update all it starts the update and then pops up and tells me that the application cannot be downloaded at this time. I have had to delete a few apps bc this isn't working.

I keep getting updates from my app store but yet when I go in and update it starts the process but then a message pops up that says the download cannot be done at this time. I have had to delete a few apps because of this. I have also signed out and signed back into my account and turned my phone on and off and still does the same thing. Help!

    Hi tmcrae
First check that your device is not full, maybe you may have to delete some photos or apps to make space to do updates. if its not full then you will have to try pluging it into your pc/mac running itunes then doing a backup and restore. Then you should be able to do your updates.
Sorry but i cant think of any other way if its showing as installed already but is not there.
    Hope that helps

  • Any reason not to trash old updating software?

My utilities folder contains ipod updating software going back to 2003. Is there any reason not to send the old versions to the trash? It takes up a fair amount of space.
    Thanks.

You may want to keep the very last version of the stand-alone iPod Updater app. There may be some rare case where the update/restore feature integrated into iTunes does not work properly, and you want to try it with the old updater. Note: Although iTunes gets regular updates, the iPod software version for the old iPods (installed by iTunes for update/restore) remains the same.
Of course, if you no longer have the iPod(s) from that time, it would serve no purpose. iPods that were release after that point would not work with the old updater.

  • Installing SSD and keeping old HDD in the MacBook pro

    Greetings guys,
I would need a hint or two. I have late 2012 MacBook pro 13', and I want to install Samsung SSD into it to improve it's performance. Now, I am musician, and I am using software instruments a lot, and I have tons of those installed on my HDD. I know how to replace HDD with SDD, but I want to :
    1. Keep old HDD by geting rid of the DVD drive for storing the data
    2. Transfer the whole system to the SSD with the operating system (I'm runing 1.8.5 Mountain Lion), and all the installations with it.
Should I just back up my system, replace the HDD with SSD, put HDD into DVD drive slot and just use Time machine from the external HDD on fresh SSD and that's it? Or is there more to it, please advise! Thanks!

    That's fine.
However, what you can do is to clone the HDD onto the SSD without using a Time Machine backup, so you do not need an external drive. You have to do this after installing the SSD inside and putting the HDD in the DVD drive.
After putting the HDD in the DVD drive, turn on your Mac and it will start up in the HDD. Then, open Disk Utility and use it to format the SSD with a GUID partition table and "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as "Format" > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
After that, Disk Utility provides you a Restore option to clone a drive onto a different one, so put your HDD as "Source" and the SSD as "Destination" > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html
Choose the option you want. The option you mentioned and the one I described are valid

  • I want rsync only download new files and keep old files

I install Arch i686 in home and in home I do not have internet connection , so at work I download all packages I need with this command
    rsync -avrt --bwlimit=58 rsync://mirror.datacenter.by/arch//extra/os/any/ /home/ddd/i686/
and move them to home and then copy them to
    /var/cache/pacman/arch
    and install packages with pacman
after two days , I run this command
    rsync -avrt --bwlimit=58 rsync://mirror.datacenter.by/arch//extra/os/any/ /home/ddd/i686/
and I see rsync get last packages again and use many Bandwidth
how I tell rsync only download new files and keep old files

    rsync manpage says the following:
-u, --update                skip files that are newer on the receiver
          --inplace               update destination files in-place
--append                append data onto shorter files
--append-verify         --append w/old data in file checksum
I guess you need to add -u flag.
Reading manpages is the highest virtue in GNU/Linux.

  • WHY is the old updater still appearing in the menu bar???

    ^THIS.
I'm still astounded that the old updater icon still appears in the menu bar, and that it's also creating a mess up there. It's redundant -- the cloud icon should be all we need for update notifications.

  • SQL Developer Keeps finding updates (1.2.1.32.02)

    Hi,
I have just patched my SQL Developer (Windows XP Pro) (extensions tab shows version 1.2.1.32.00) and the automatic update wizard keeps finding a new patch (1.2.1.32.02).
It says it's installed it, but after a restart (including an additional manual one) my extensions tab shows version 1.2.1.32.00 and the update wizard finds the new update again.
Help! (or is it the "Groundhog Day" patch).
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Matt,
Yes, there is a new Check for Updates. It should force the second restart we require and it should update the front panel in the Help -> About to 1.2.1.32.05. If you were on a 1.2.1.32.00 build then the only extension that is updated under your extensions list is the SQL Developer extension, which is 1.2.1.32.05.
You can run the Check for Updates against a 1.2.0.29.98 build (i.e. the initial 1.2 release) or against the new 1.2.1.32.00 build. In both situations had you run the Check for Updates last week, this update will clear the issues you might have encountered.
You should not keep getting prompted for repeated updates. While it's starting to feel like my stock answer these days, please restart your install and this should clear.
    Regards
    Sue

  • WSUS 3.0 started to show old updates

Hi, a couple of weeks ago my WSUS 3.0 started to show old updates as needed (starting from 2009). I notice they are all Windows Server updates (2008R2 and 2012), there are no Win XP/Vista/7 updates.
Recently I ran "Server cleanup wizard" after a couple of years from the last time (not my fault), and I notice that it failed at the first point "unused updates and update revisions". If I try again, it fails always at that point, while
if I run the wizard without this option it ends successfully, deleting updates and freeing disk space.
I searched on my servers some of the updates marked as "needed" to check if they were already installed, and it seems they are really not installed, but it is very strange because we usually approve all updates one time a month, in fact before
these updates showed, there were only a few updates with status "needed" (the last arrived and not yet approved).
One detail more: servers involved in updates, are rebooted very rarely since they are in a internal, production network. For example, last update of a group of them was sept 2013.
    What could have happened?

Hi, a couple of weeks ago my WSUS 3.0 started to show old updates as needed (starting from 2009). I notice they are all Windows Server updates (2008R2 and 2012)
Quite possible if new -unpatched- servers have been introduced into the network.
I searched on my servers some of the updates marked as "needed" to check if they were already installed, and it seems they are really not installed
Also... believe it or not... sometimes updates get 'uninstalled'. It's also possible that they were
    never actually installed.
I notice that it failed at the first point "unused updates and update revisions". If I try again, it fails always at that point, while if I run the wizard without this option it ends successfully, deleting updates and freeing disk space.

  • IOS 7 App Store showing old updates / showing updates and not letting me install

I noticed two issues with the iOS 7 App Store starting last night.  I'm not sure if it's a temporary issue, since the issue seems to be server-side on Apple's part, or if it's a long-term issue.
I am running iOS 7.0.2 on an iPhone 5s.  I do not have automatic updates for apps turned on (I like checking what an app is updating before installing it).  I have tried force quitting the App Store app and restarted my iPhone.
The first thing I noticed last night was that the App Store showed an update for Hulu Plus on my iPhone but wouldn't let me install it.  On my iPad (3rd-gen) running iOS 7, it let me install it.  This morning, it let me install it.  After, I noticed another badge on my App Store app icon with a "1", and it said there was an update for 94 Seconds, but wouldn't let me install it either.  Then when I expanded the details, I noticed the date on it was from July 30, 2013.  I already had that update installed over 2 months ago.  Screenshots for that issue are below.
Is anhyone else experiencing anything similar?  Any solutions?

    Thanks for the quick response.
I do indeed seem to recall that happening with an app previously.
However, this time it was two apps (Google and Tivo).  I figured they'd get flushed out when more updates (for other apps) hit the App Store. However, when that happened just now, while it did show "update" for those old updates instead of "open", I could not select "update all" up top and had to press update next to each of the (now 4) apps.  The real issue though is that it (of course) can't further update Google and Tivo and gets stuck.  So I can't update any of my apps now.
When I went back into App Store I then got the blank screen that shows nothing under updates but the "Purchased" slider up top.  I thus had to reboot.  I can get back into the App Store, and got an error regarding the Tivo update not being available (this was a Jan 10 or so update that had already been installed), but there it still sits in the updates.  Interestingly, Google did "update" and fall off the badge indicator.  I selected only my true/new updates, so now I'm just stuck with a false Tivo update/badge.
I should add that I am on 7.0.4.
EDIT: Tivo "updated" after the reboot too.  So, bottom line is that you're (I'm) stuck with the false updates until a real update comes through, and then I have to go through that song and dance to clear out the false flags.

  • Why to I have to repeatedly update apps with old updates I've already updated?

I keep having to do updates on apps.  I understand new updates, but I keep seeing updates that are even over a year old that I have already updated several times before.  This is getting kind of old!
    Am I doing something wrong?

  • Should I keep video in .avi or .mov h.264 formats -- or both?

We have older Canon cameras that shoot video in .avi format. I export these from QuickTime Player 7 in H.264 format (high quality, key frame rate 24) before uploading them to our MobileMe Gallery for online viewing. The .mov H.264-encoded video is often 1/3 to 1/2 smaller.
I'd rather just keep the .mov files around and delete the original .avi files, but I'm worried about being able to read the files 20 years from now. Should I keep both formats around, or does H.264-encoded video stand just as good a chance of being readable in 20 years as .avi?

The AVI container enjoyed popularity because it didn't have (use) many industry standards. Your 4 year old camera used AVI to save some money (not having to pay licensing fees to the MPEG-4 Group).
If you're happy with the H.264 video codec version of your source files and they work as expected, I recommend deleting the AVI version to save hard drive space. You could back them up on external media (hard drive or DVD as data) if you wish.
