Should I keep using keywords in addition to faces?

Normally I would use keywords to identify each person in my photos. Now that I have faces, should I stop using keywords to identify people? What do you guys think?

I agree with Larry. If you want to share your photos with others with PC their applications will only read the keywords, titles and description metadata and not the faces. Keywords are, IMO, very important.

If there are features you need that were dropped in CC2014, such as the oil paint filter, then by all means install both. Personally, I have uninstalled CC as well as CS 6 and earlier. I can always reinstall if I need them. Having only one installed version makes inter-program operations much simpler, as the OS knows just which program to use for opening a .PSD, for example.

Keyword parenthesis when using Keyword Controls

I am learning about keywords using the Keyword Controls and Keyword Presets, but sometimes when I bring keywords to the middle column, it includes the folder name in parenthesis after each tag. Is this something I should ignore? (It seems to only happen for the default Aperture keywords.) I'm not sure why it is there to begin with.
Also, is it possible to get assigned keywords to export and then translate as "tags"?

No,better not!
The keywords with additional brackets are specialisations of the keywords categories in parenthesis - not parts of a folder.
You seem to have a problem with duplicate keywords; you can check by creating a Smart Album at the top level of your Library Albums, based on keywords; probably when you add a rule "keyword is" you will see a list like this:
Some keywords appear twice ore more often, and the duplicates have a second keyword added in parenthesis.
Typically this happens, if two conditions hold:
you import images that have keywords assigned,
and this keyword is already defined in your Aperture Library, but not at the top level of the hierarchie of keywords, e.g., you have a hierarchie of keywords Animal -> Bird -> Sparrow.
If you import an image labelled "Sparrow", Aperture will create a new keyword "Sparrow" at the toplevel of keywords, and all your older images will be labelled Sparrow (Bird). These two keyword versions -"Sparrow" and "Sparrow (Bird") - are distinct keywords, and you need to merge them.
To clean up duplicate keywords, use the "Keywords HUD". There you can enter any keyword that appear twice at different levels of the keyword hierarchy into to the search field and merge the keywords by dragging the toplevel versions to the lower levels of the keywords hierarchy. Post back, if you need further help on how to do that.
Some of the duplicate keywords in my example have been caused by importing from iPhoto. In this case Aperture appended (iPhoto) to iPhoto keywords, to distinguish them from the keywords already defined in Aperture. Also the predefined Aperture keywords are defined in a herarchichal keywords list; so if you import (or reimport) images with standard keywords, you will automatically create duplicate keywords.

Searching Japanese using keywords

When searching using keywords in the awesome bar, it converts any Japanese characters to their percent-encoded forms (sorry if I'm using the wrong terminology here). This is no problem for most searches, for example http://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=%E3%81%A0%E3%81%AE　and http://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=だの both give the same result and load the same page without issue.
However, some searches (I've only noticed this with amazon.com and amazon.co.jp, but presumably it could happen on other sites) do not play nice with this conversion. For example, entering "amazon だ" ("amazon" being my amazon search key) gives me the URL http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=%3F, which instead searches for "?" for some reason. If I manually substitute だ instead of the %3F (giving http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=%E3%81%A0), it conducts the search as expected. I don't really know what's going on here (i.e., why Amazon is showing it as %3F when it should be %E3%81%A0) but hopefully someone more familiar with this can shed some light on the situation.
EDIT: I should note that non-Japanese searches work just fine. In addition, no sites (that I've tried) have had problems with Japanese searches other than Amazon.

I believe vaz meant check your network settings on your router.
Also Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

How do you use Keywords?

I'm curious how you use Keywords. I started to go into my pictures today and add them. I went first to the first Event I had and looked for any pictures of my kids. I was going to make my Keywords pretty broad. If they were aged 0 - 5, then that was my Keyword. But, then I had a picture of a brother and a sister, where the brother was 8 and the sister was 4. What to do? Then I changed it from 0-5 to 0-10. I've tagged about 300 of them that way, but now I'm wondering if it's worth the time. I know I can also use multiple Keywords, but that just seems to be a lot of work.
For reference, I name all my pictures when I input them. I use the following format: name of person - event (if pertinent) - town - year, so that might come out as Chip - Halloween - Golden - '08. That way, I find it pretty easy to find whatever I might be looking for.

The BEST system of keywording is the system you will actually execute. So your priority should be figuring out what you are willing and happy to do on a fairly regular basis.
Since it already sounds like your system is a hassle, I don't know that your keyword needs to reflect the age---you can easily search on KW: Kids and Date Range: (whatever the young years would be) after the fact, and save yourself trouble while tagging. Or set that up as a Smart Album, and then once you've done the "okay when the kid was 0-4 that would be the dates 1990-1994", you don't need to do it again.
Certainly, though, you should be open to multiple keywords on the same photo--that's the power of keywords, to categorize the same photo in multiple aspects.
I don't bother naming my photos, but unlike TD, I create a lot of smaller events and name them pretty carefully, similar to your photo names. I use keywords for recurring themes, like Me, Family, Friends, Rivers, Flowers, or places I visit multiple times. Things with a beginning and ending, I lean on the event name to track, eg "Christmas Eve, Christmas--Opening Gifts, Christmas--Dinner, Christmas--Hanging Out".
I find it very important to use the shortcuts, so that I can skim through 300 pix from a national park and just hit f to apply the Family keyword, m to apply the Me keyword, w for pictures of water, l for pictures of flowers, etc. (The keyword pane must be open to use the shortcuts)
I tend to set up a smart album based on a keyword about the same time I set up a keyword, so that the list of smart albums helps me remember what I am doing with keywords. Also, thinking in terms of which albums you want to be browsing helps figure out how you need to keyword the photos--when your relatives or friends come over, what do you want to show them?

I tried to read about home sharing, but it sounds like everyone has to have the same id.

Create NEW account/ID for them using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before. Make sure you specify a birthdate that results in being at least 13 years old
Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card
Use the new ID on their devices but only for:
Settings>Messages>Send and Receive
Settings>FaceTime
Settings>GameCenter
and Settings>iCloud if you want her to have separate Contacts Calendar and some other things.
Continue to use the same/common Apple ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores so you can share purchases.

Keep using cs5.5 or buy cs6 master?

hi is 5.5 master still considered a fair updated version for basic graphic design use in 2014 or should i buy cs6 master? or should i just keep using 5.5 and dont waste money on cs6 master because it wont get updated like creative cloud. i am trying to skip the cloud, im too poor for that.

I don't know what's wrong with my Mac Mozilla Firefox, version 3.6.8, but today, it started alerting me about an error message on the "Error Console". In every website I visit, it tells me: "The 'charCode' property of a keyup event should not be used. The value is meaningless." Is this possibly caused by a virus?
I saw a pop-up which did not allow me to click it when I scatter the windows on my Mac. I was using Private Browsing, with pop-ups disabled, but one pop-up managed to get passed my settings, and open in another window. It would not allow me to select it, so all I did was to close Firefox, and start a new session. So far, everything has been normal, I also deleted the cookies it installed.
But, I still keep seeing that "Error Console" notice under my "Tools" on the Menu Bar, and when I clicked on it, it listed errors (such as what I listed above).
Would someone explain this to me?

The messages you see in the Error Console are mostly to assist the web site's author in resolving compatibility problems. Some of them can assist you in determining why a web site doesn't work as intended. The one you mentioned doesn't sound that suspicious, except that it occurs on many sites. Perhaps one of your add-ons is trying to monitor what you type?
To diagnose whether this is caused by an add-on or one of your settings, you could try the following:
First, make a backup of your computer for safekeeping. To back up Firefox, see [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information].
Next, try starting Firefox in Firefox
[http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode Safe Mode]. Be careful not to "reset" anything permanently if you didn't back up.
Does that resolve the errors? If so, then an add-on usually is the culprit. If not, try creating a new (blank) profile: [http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles Managing profiles].
If the new profile works correctly, you can choose between further research on your old profile or moving key settings like bookmarks from your old profile to the new one. Photoshop CC or Photoshop CC 2014: which should I be using?

This may be a dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway: I have both versions of Photoshop installed on my Windows PC: CC and CC (2014) I only want one version because two versions is confusing (see below). Which one should I be using?
Here's why two versions is confusing: When you do ctrl-E (cmd-E on Mac) in Lightroom 5 to edit a photo in Photoshop, then if no version of Photoshop is running, Lightroom 5 will launch the most recently installed version of Photoshop. In my case, the most recently-installed version is Photoshop CC 2014, which I installed using the Creative Cloud Desktop App when Adobe released it. I did not have a problem until one day I manually launched Photoshop CC from an old desktop shortcut and installed some action sets. The next time Lightroom launched Photoshop, my actions were missing! Yes, I know I installed them in the wrong version, and it is my fault. But this would not have happened if there was only one version installed on my PC. Or if Adobe gave better guidance. Their FAQ is confusing.
So I'll ask again: I want only one version of Photoshop. Which one should I keep?

If the latest version performs well with no problems, then that's obviously the one to keep. This is the one that gets updates.
Careful about uninstalling CC with CC2014 still on the system. The earlier version may take file associations with it - sometimes easily fixed, sometimes not. The safe procedure is to always uninstall in reverse version order, then reinstall the newer version you want.

You can use the external drive you want with your Mac. However, the "for Mac" external drives come prepared to connect them and start using them, and probably you will have to do some additional steps with your external drive.
First, you will have to format the external drive with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", the only filesystem compatible with OS X. If you have got files on the external drive, you have to copy them to your Mac before erasing the drive. What program should I be using?

Hello friends,
I am wanting to make a 3-5 sec video clip taken portion of a movie that I have on my HD and email it to a friend.
I figured I could do this in iMovie, yet the file will not import. The original format was MPEG-1. I read that iMovie would only import MPEG-4 (why only MPEG-4!?), so I converted the file to MPEG-4 yet it still will not import.
Should I be using a different program for this? I don't want to spend any money right now. I have all of the iLife programs, and all the bundled stuff that comes with a current model iMac. In addition I just purchased Toast, but Toast is not for editing is it?
If there's no way to make iMovie work for me, is there a free download out there? Is there another program on my system that I could use for this?

How to use keywords in a correct way for Acrobat Pro AND Spotlight

When I enter keywords in a PDF using CMD-D in Acrobat Professional I also want to find those keywords via OS X Spotlight. At the same time I to be able to use keywords when I enter keywords in PDFs using Preview.app.
What's the path to do this, and how do these three applications work together to provide a consistent search. I also need to know the details like do I enter keywords in Acrobat with komma or without, with a space before the komma or not etc.
The goal is to be able to have a constistant, compatible workflow for keywords/tags in PDFs using Acrobat, prevoew.app, and other applications; in order to manage large amounts of PDF files.

Thank you for your answers. I hope I can ask some more of your time because it is not totally clear yet.
I tried your suggestion to change the stroke width. This has no effect, other than the stroke width, the curves stay filled. It would be nice to show this in a picture... And I just noticed that I had the arguments wrong in my example (been playing around with it too much), the null and green should be the other way round. But also this did not make any difference. Specifying the fill color with the same color as the background color of the map is a workaround though.
Adding the theme_name to the feature attributes is an option, but would that be possible with predefined themes? At the moment we have all the theme definitions in the database.
The most important question however is how do I draw a single feature, based on some condition. The only method I can find in the MapViewer api is drawLiveFeatures with no feature args which "Draws all the live features that are returned to this client from MapViewer". I must be overlooking something.
