Should I leave router on 24/7

I'm sure this has been asked before, but is it best to leave the router on all the time. At the moment I switch mine off at night and then back on again in the morning but I've read that this may not be the best thing to do.
Any thoughts?

As I understand it, if the BT servers find they can't connect to you, then they reduce the speed until they do. So turning it off would seem like a fault and give reduced speed when you switch back on.
sorry but that is wrong.  you can switch off your router at night and on again next morning without any problem but your conenction will be better if left on 24/7
only if there are a few resets in a short space of time will the DLM increase your noise margin and reduce your conenction speed.

  • Should  I leave my macbook plugged in when I'm not using it?

Should I leave my macbook charging cable plugged in when I'm not using it?

It won't hurt anything (i.e., it won't overcharge). It isn't a good idea to leave it plugged in 100% of the time. One common recommendation is to use the battery at least one cycle per month without ever deeply discharging it. Ways to do that would be to use it on battery power until it is discharged to 50% twice during a month or to 80% 5 times during a month or some other combination that adds up to roughly 100% usage once per month at a minimum. Another way of stating that is that you should use the battery sometimes.

I have an old mac book pro built in 2006. I just use it in the kitchen to go on the internet--which it does fairly well. It's running OS 10.6.8. Would it be risky to upgrade to the OS 10.7.4 Lion. Or should I leave well enough alone? I was hoping that the upgrade would allow me to use an old version of Kindle for Mac. I need to get the machine into 2012 functionality. If I can't do it, no worries.

The very early 2006 MBPs are limited to Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  If your MBP is a model Identifier 2.1 or 2.2, then you can install Lion (10.7.5).  Note that the transition to Lion might mean that some applications will not be compatible so updates or substitutions would be needed.
I have a 2006 MBP, Model Identifier 1.2, and it is running Snow Leopard very efficiently.  It is just a bit slower than newer ones, especially in the graphics area.  Otherwise is is a very good machine.
    Ciao.

  • Should We Leave 10% of Disk Space Free??

I'm wondering if anyone knows whether we should be leaving the usual ten percent of drive space free on these SSDs in the iPads like we should with normal disk drives? I've been looking around to see if anyone is talking about this but can't find any discussion. I'm having a hard enough time not totally filling up my iPad so it would be tough to leave 10% available for system operations.
(for those that don't know, with the spinning platter style drives it's important to leave at least ten percent of your drive space free so the system can read/write to it. Completely filling up a disk drive can cause serious corruption. I'm just not sure how SSD works.)

You actually don't need to leave a fixed percentage free .... you just need some free space in general.
For example, if you buy a 40 Gb drive, you may want to leave 4 Gb free (I would personally only worry when I got down to about 500 Meg free). But if you bought a 720 Gb drive, no way should you leave 72 Gb free and unused for "system work".
In any case, I haven't heard anyone suggest that you need to treat SSD's any differently than mechanical drives.

  • Should i leave charge plug when it is fully charged?

Should i leave charge plug when it is fully charged? I read that my macbook pro with retina display (Early-2012) has 1000 charge-cycle. If i do not unplug it when it is fully charged, it won't count plus for charge-cycle. However, is it beneficial?
    Thanks a lot.

You can leave it plugged in whether using it or not. It will not harm the battery:

New imac 27(Intel based, bought 2013) slow wifi connection with my Verizon fios actiontec router. All other wireless devices in the house(ipad 3gen,MacBook Air ,hp laptop) have a much faster connection. Should I change router settings to G only, switch channel from auto to maybe 6,channel width to 20mhz? Already changed security settings to WPA2.  Currently router is running in mixed b and g mode.

If you have one computer running on G they will all run on G. All ROUTERS are backward compatible, in otherwords if you have a group of computers and all of them are N compatible and one or two are G They will all work but the N computers will run at N and those that are G will run at G speed not N.
It can get confusing but really it is simple. The newest is 802.11 AC and ic used with the newest Mac Computers made available in November 2013. So if you have the newest Airport Extreme that is 802.11ac and the newest computers that are AC compliant your speed will be 5 times faster than anything on the market right now.

  • Should I leave the email open on my MBP

Hello all, should I leave my mail open or closed on my MBP?  I like to know when I have mail and thought that I might just leave it up?  Also I do like to hear a mail sound when mail comes in.

That is up to you. No harm will come to your Mac or the mail program by leaving it open.

  • Should I leave my imac turned on all of the time?

Should I leave my imac on all of the time....and if so why?..Thanks

The debate is as old as computers themselves.    The most important thing to remember, is lightning is a machine's worst enemy, and no surge protector can defend against all lightning strikes.  As the proverbial Clint Eastwood said:  "Do you feel lucky today?"
Look at your energy usage on your electric bill on a similar month weather wise with and without the computer on all the time.
See if you can run with Energy Saver on without freezes, as many third party devices don't support Apple's low power mode.
Once a month it is good to run in Screen Saver instead of Energy Saver as cleaning up happens on the system upon wakeup from sleep, or in the middle of the night if only Screen Saver or nothing is running but applications.   Energy Saver delays that cleanup.  You can get Macjanitor or Anacron to run that cleanup when you want.

  • Should I leave my time capsule on 24/7

Should I leave my time capsule on 24/7

+I don't see any additional benefit of an 24/7 TC...+
You will place far less stress on the power supply and electronics within the TC by leaving it on rather than subjecting it to a sudden rush of current every time you power the device back up.
In addition, when you power it down, you lose your connection to the network. Forcing the TC to re-establish a network connection every time you start up is bound to cause some network difficulties sooner or later.
Apple designed the TC without a power switch for a reason. The device will on average, last longer and perform more reliably if you leave it alone.

  • I have a new Mac Book Pro Retinal.  Should I leave the charger connected all of the time that I am at my desk or should I disconnect the charger and allow the battery to full cycle?

I have a new Mac Book Pro Retinal.  Should I leave the charger connected while I am at my desk or should I disconnect the charger and all the battery to full cycle?

I leave mine plugged in when at a desk most of the time.
The battery will slowly discharge from 100% to 95% even on wall power, then recharge to 100% ... to save usage of the recharge circuits.
At least once a month I use it on battery and let the battery run down to about 40%.
DO NOT run to "dead" ... that will shorten battery life.
BTW: My battery currently (after 1 year) can still hold 101% of factory-designed charge.

  • What should my default route be with a VPN?

I have a remote site that is connected to my main site using a VPN over the internet. ALL traffic on the remote site should come back to the main. On the remote site I have the outside interface configured with a crypto map indicating that the peer is my Main site's outside ASA (VPN endpoint) interface. The VPN functions and most of the traffic seems to be flowing correctly, except..
When a user tries to telnet to a site the packets seem to be going out to the internet instead of through the VPN tunnel? The way I came to this conclusion is I did a traceroute on the router to the IP of the Telnet server and see that it goes to the internet and gets lost. A traceroute from the user's station shows it goes out their router and just times out afterwards.
There is 1 static route on the router specifying the default route as the ISP's interface. This is the correct next hop but with my crypto map configured on the interface and with the peer being my main site, is this configuration correct? Should my default route on the router be my VPN peer's IP as the next hop or the ISP's?
Also do you think this is the reason why packets are getting routed to the internet instead of back to my Main site?  Thanks for any help!!

Thanks for the reply Karsten. I'm thinking now that the issue is actually back at my Main site and not at the crypto map. When I was on the remote router and did the traceroute (which went to the internet) I think it was only because I didn't specify which specific interface to ping from.
I still wasn't sure about that next hop though so thanks for answering that!  -Mark
