Should I let the Powerbook sleep while it is encoding in iDVD?

Should I let my Powerbook sleep when I'm burning a DVD or discimage? Will letting the Powerbook sleep interrupt the encoding process? Thanks, Janice

Hello, Janice,
Welcome to the discussions!
I would have answered, NO, keep your Powerbook on and don't let it sleep, but then I did a search for you and found the thread below. You could have found this thread by doing a search in iDVD discussion with the terms 'encode' and 'sleep' (That is how I found it!). You will find as you use the discussion forums that many times your question has been addressed, or you will find some similar questions, and you will definitely find out new information.
So, have a look at this thread. There are conflicting opinions here, but I would go with Len Goff's suggestions as he is very knowledgeable:

Should I let the battery run down before charging my iPad or iPhone or iPod Nano to help the battery last longer?  I took a class at Verizon and they said let it drain completely and it would last longer.  Thanks

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. Hi, I have a macbook pro.  I use it a lot for college and I was wondering, should I always plug my laptop to the charger or should I let the battery die before recharging my laptop? Is there a difference?  The battery of my laptop is supposed to last how long?

I have just got my iPad2 and am very pleased with it. I have a question regarding the monthly (recommended) battery full charge.  Should I let the battery completely die down to nothing at all before I plug in to recharge or would this complete drain be bad for my iPad?

It's not bad for it - on this page www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html it says :
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

  • Should i let the laptop on charge?

    Yo,
    I just bought a MBP retina 13" 2014.
Can I let the laptop on charge when i'm home even if its fully charged or is going to screw up the battery in the long run ( such as my previous labtop..)?
    Thanks you.

There is no problem with leaving the AC charger connected even when the battery is fully charged.

  • Can the computer sleep while encoding?

I am currently in the process of making a DVD from iMovie using iDVD. While I knew it would take a long time to go through all the encoding, I didn't count on it lasting this long.
I have to pack up the computer and take it home, possibly before it finishes the process. My quesiton is this, can I close the lid on the computer while it is still encoding without having to start over? Can it sleep and pick back up where it left off, or better yet, can I change settings so it won't go to sleep when I close the lid? It has been going for about three hours now, I would really hate to have do it all over again.
Second question: I have made DVD's using iDVD before, and although they have been about the same length (actually with many more effects than this one), none of them has taken this long to encode. We have been sitting in the "encoding audio" phase for nearly all of the time this go 'round. I hear this is not uncommon, but how will I know if iDVD has frozen?
Thanks for any suggestions, I have about an hour before I have to close the lid....

    Len,
Something you do for while you're on the boat picking up your DVD-Rs?
    You got it!
.... or almost. I shoot underwater video and on the boatride home I sometimes have a lot of time (1.5-2 hrs). So one day I decided to try my luck - and it worked.
    OK, that's the last time.
Man, I sure hope so ....
I knew I should never have written that comment .... LOL.
Actually, I'm quite amazed that closing the lid would return you to the process...and finish successfully.
Have to add here: I only tried this when creating a disk image. But it always worked.

  • How long should i let the "LJP 1100_P1560_P1600_Full_Solution.exe" run on my computer?

It takes 50% of my CPU. Now it's working for an hour.

Turn it off.  Leave it off.  Leave it unplugged.
Take it to Genius Bar for evaluation and let them be the first to turn it on after checking HD, RAM, logic board, etc.
Water is accident and you will pay for repairs.
    Good luck.

  • Should I run the Mac Pro while it is open?

I think that the loud fan noise coming from my Mac Pro is the GPU. It's a loud humming fan noise. I want to try holding the fan down on it while the computer is running to see if it stops making the noise, but I'm afraid to open the Mac while it's running. Is it OK to open it while it's running?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but this is the first Mac Pro I've used, and I'm afraid that I will break my $1000 computer.

Thanks for the recommendation. Hardware Monitor reported the same temperatures as iStat Menus, but it's more feature-robust. I like that guy's note on how it's not an App Store App
I actually opened my Mac while it was running and held down the GPU fan, and the weird lawnmower noise was coming from it. Some blasting from a compressed air can seemed to fix it, but the main fan is still a bit noisy. I think it's just worn down (since this is a used PC that I bought) and could use some lube.

  • Should i let Main() exit while worker threads are still running?

what is the Java Best Programming Practices for the issue of having the
public static void main(String[] args) { ... }exit before the worker Threads that is starts exit?
letting main() exit first, or making it wait, has no practical difference.
yet, when others look at my code, what should it look like?
should i thread.join() on all worker threads, before main() exits?
imo: it appears to be bad style to let the main() exit while my session with the jvm is, essentially, still running.
yet, it is extra code that is not necessary.

    Strike that. Reverse it.
    i.e.

    1) Have main join the threads, and comment that you're doing so simply to preserve the notion of main as the umbrella for the program.
    2) Make the threads daemons, and comment at the end of main that the daemon threads, and hence the program, may still run after main has completed.

    should instead say:
    1) Make the threads daemons, and have main join the threads, and comment that you're doing so simply to preserve the notion of main as the umbrella for the program.
    2) Make the threads non-daemons (the default), and comment at the end of main that the non-daemon threads, and hence the program, may still run after main has completed.

  • Putting to sleep while updating

Right now I'm downloading Mac OS X 10.5.6 update and my question is does putting the computer to sleep affects download? Because previously the computer was asleep for a while and then the package didn't work.

Never put a computer to sleep during an update. You can lose everything.
If you put it to sleep during a download, the download will terminate improperly and may need manual removal from the HD.
You can let the screen sleep, but never the computer, during any operation.

I have a new Mac Book Pro Retinal.  Should I leave the charger connected while I am at my desk or should I disconnect the charger and all the battery to full cycle?

I leave mine plugged in when at a desk most of the time.
The battery will slowly discharge from 100% to 95% even on wall power, then recharge to 100% ... to save usage of the recharge circuits.
At least once a month I use it on battery and let the battery run down to about 40%.
DO NOT run to "dead" ... that will shorten battery life.
BTW: My battery currently (after 1 year) can still hold 101% of factory-designed charge.
