Should I make the plunge? Feedback wanted

I've got an offer to sell my 3GS for $250, I'm eligible for an early upgrade. 16 gb iPhone will run me $399. Should I make the move???

I'm in the same boat. Wondering if I should sell 3gs that is only about 3 months old (bought it then a week later iphone 4 was announced) to upgrade to the 4. Figure I could get 250 out of mine and would only be out of pocket 150. Seeing all the issues I may wait for a bit, or at least till I can get at store and set up there to see if there are any problems before I leave there rather than order online and cross my fingers.

  • How large should I make the Windows partition in Bootcamp?

I've just taken delivery of a shiny new 17" Macbook Pro and I am planning to install Windows 7 on it and run SolidWorks 2010 as well as all the Mac side stuff (Adobe CS4, vectorWorks etc). The question I have is what do the experts here think I should set as the Windows partition size? I have a 500GB drive to work with.
Also, is it best practise to separate Windows files (eg the SolidWorks files) and the Mac files? Should I aim to have all the Windows native app files on the Windows partition or is it OK to mix and match (ie keep everything on the Mac side and access them from Windows)?

right. I've installed both the 64bit and 32bit versions of Windows 7 and Office 2010 CPP (plus all OS/driver updates from Windows Update as well as other necessary apps (like anti-virus, DropBox, 2GB of personal data)) on a 60GB BC partition and wound up with about 43GB free. I'm not sure what everyone else is installing but you do NOT need a huge partition/drive for Windows 7. 60GB will do you just fine (and believe it or not, Windows is my default OS. I use Snow Leopard for iTunes, Photos (all multimedia), web cam/skype, and have the lion share of my 500GB drive allocated to OSX.
Things are working very well with this configuration.

  • Should I Make The Switch?

I am a DROID guy, plain and simple. I love the droid line of phones and i enjoy using Android. BUT, it dosen't come without its share of problems. The droid x is my favorite phone but I have had to replace it 3 times because of many lock ups and freezing and constant rebooting. My third droid x screen went out. I now have the HTC Thundebolt. Its been working fine but on and off. I am having alot of data issues and its frustrating. Htc said fixes are coming and verizon offers me a replacement..And the thing that led me to this post was that my thunderbolt suddenly crashed on me, i lost everything on my SD card. I wanted to wait for the droid x2 but i have had enough. I don't like replacements because i always buy my phones full retail, so thats not a problem.
I have used my aunts iphone for a bit and find it to be quite elegant and simple to use.I also find the size to be perfect for me too although thats not an issue coming from a droid x. I know people complain that the iPhone dosen't have live wallpapers or widgets but even a tech support rep from htc told me to conserve battery i should use widgets at a minimal and use a static wallpaper instead..I'm just looking for a phone i can depend on and not worry about it crashing on me and losing everything.
I do alot of browsing but its mostly research and reading, listening to music, videos, taking pics, etc. And of course a phone that has good reception and can  keep a reliable signal. I have two weeks to decide because i am going on vacation. Sorry about the long post but i just wanted to share my experiences and get opinions from my fellow community members. And yes i am in a 4G area but because of the data issues i don't mind using a 3G phone. My contract will be up in July 2012 so i need a phone to last me until i'm ready to buy something else. So there it is, should i stay with DROID or will your opinions make me jump ship to the i4!
    Cheers

Your post confuses me... You say you buy your phones full retail, but then say your contract runs out in Jul 2012, and that you need a phone to last you until then... Why would it matter how long it lasts if you have the luxury of purchasing them at full retail price?
It seems as though you've answered your own question, as well. You say you like using your aunt's iPhone and like how it feels, runs, etc. There's your answer. If you have the money to blow on it, why not just get one and you can switch back to your Droid and sell it if you end up not liking it

  • Should I make the switch from PC to Mac?

Hi. I have recently bought a 120GB HD Sony Laptop (PC) and am wondering if you would recomend I take it back for a MA699LL/A Macbook that has 60GB HD.
Does anyone own that model? And is it pretty fast?
And if this is in the wrong forum, sorry, I am new to the Apple forums.
    Thanks. =)

More than fast enough for web browsing, word processing, etc. In fact, it's overkill for simple tasks like these.
As with most laptops, it doesn't make a great gaming machine - the graphics card is not really intended for heavy 3D. If you were wanting to install Windows on it as well, you probably want a bigger hard drive, but there are other options - if you only need to run a few Windows programs, Parallels works very well. Parallels is a virtual machine, meaning that it can run Windows or Linux on top of OS X, at near native speeds.
I bought my Mac Pro intending to dual boot to Windows, but haven't had to resort to that - Parallels does the job nicely. In fact, it's fast enough to do heavy .NET or Delphi development with no noticeable lag.
Once you become used to OS X, you won't want to run Windows.

  • How large should I make the partition for Windows XP?

I am mainly using it for light gaming, the partition means how much of the hard drive is used for windows and windows-based programs/games it can use, right? What does Windows alone need, and what would you suggest? I have about 100GB total disk space left on my macbook.

This will in part depend on the copy of Windows XP you are using to install. If it is the absolute latest copy you could get it should come with SP3 built in, which will reduce the amount of space necessary. If it is Windows XP SP2 or earlier, you will need significantly more space. I suggest 4.5 - 5 gb just for XP alone, especially in the latter case. After that, find the maximum space that your programs can use on installation, add it all up, and add at least 10% to that. Next, take your amount of physical RAM and add at least that much to your previous total (this accounts for the pagefile). That would be your bare minimum to allow for Windows XP. As long as you don't expect to store significant amounts of data via Windows, that amount can be all you need.

  • TS1702 Why can I not down load an app outside the us store it won't let me be because I am in Spain in theory with your Apple ID you should down load the app you want

Any one know why does these happens I want to get an app from my apple store in Spain and apparently my account is not valid because I am out side the Us

You can only purchase from a particular country's App Store if you have a registered credit card in that country and if that credit card is tied to a physical address in that country. So unless you have a credit card in Spain registered to an address in Spain, you can't buy from their App Store.
If you meet the criteria and you need to change the store that you are currently in....
Go to Settings>iTunes and App Stores>Apple ID
    Tap your ID
    Tap View Apple ID
    Enter your password
Go to country/region in the popup window to change the store

  • Should I make the jump from iPhoto to Aperture?

Hi - I'm getting a new iMac and need to import two separate iPhoto libraries - one from a kaput PowerMac G5 (time machine backup) and the other from a more recent Macbook - around 20k photos in total with a fair amount of duplication. Getting the transfer right is my biggest concern so my question is would Aperture be the best way to go about this? I'm generally happy with iPhoto features etc but am intrigued by Aperture's expanded features. That said, my skill set is around the hobbyist level. Appreciate any insight to help me get off the fence!

    Do you shoot raw?
Do you want more control over printing?
Those are two important reasons to upgrade from iPhoto. The upgrade is neither easy nor quick, and Aperture has a long but steady learning curve. Even if you decide to give Aperture a try, I recommend getting your iPhoto Libraries (and everything else) spic-and-span on your new iMac before making the transition to Aperture.
There is a trial version of Aperture available -- and several good intro videos on Apple's site. Give it a thorough test with some sample shots -- yours and others -- prior to committing to the change.
iPhoto is a good bistro. Aperture is a 4-star restaurant. They meet different needs, at different costs (in both money and time).

  • Should I take the plunge?

    Hi Folks
I've come to this forum, because I'm on the verge of requesting FTTC broadband. Our exchange and cabinet have just gone live for Infinity, and I would certainly benefit from faster upload as I regularly upload large audio files.
However, all the reported problems on here cause me to hesitate.........
I'm very close to the cabinet, and the BT wholesale checker suggests I should get virtually maximum speeds on both download and upload.
So what's the story?..... Are the majority of customers happy - are these hassles affecting a minority, whether the disconnects or slow evening speeds?
I could go with TalkTalk, (my present ADSL provider) but it will still be BT who will need to fix any issues, so thought I might as well just take the service from them directly......

    garyevs wrote:
I am in the same position, also considering signing up for BT Infinity.
It seems that people are really complaining about the lack or ineffective support they receive when they do have a problem.  It seems that the BT service desk just go through the motions rather than actually getting things fixed.  Is there a plan to return this service to the UK, as this may improve things ? No plans.
I have a couple of other queries I hope someone can help with:
Do BT throttle the service at any time, or block any ports ? No throttling on any of the Totally Unlimited Packages
Are there any restrictions to users using a VPN ? No
My current provider provides a webpage showing connection logs etc, is this type of thing available ? Depends what you are looking for. Nothing is provided by BT in the form of a log that shows what or when you connected but you can access the Homehub router stats.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Should I take the plunge and upgrade to Snow Leopard?

I have a MacBook Pro with 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB memory.
I have just upgraded my printer after the last one died, so now have no real reason stopping me to upgrade to Snow Leopard. The question is though, is there any real good reason to do so?
With 4GB of RAM I'm probably not going to get any benefit from the 64bit architecture, so I'm wondering whether I'm better off just waiting until the release of OS X 10.7?
    Any thoughts?

My vote, Upgrade. It is great. Among many other things, the one thing that is noticeable and also impressive is the speed at which everything happens in SL. Way quicker than previous OSs. Also, some apps are upgraded like preview, image capture etc.
You might want to look at the reviews from last year.

  • Who makes the SSD in the 2012 MacBook Pro 13" i7 8GB Ram model?

Looking to make the plunge from PC to Mac finally but finding difficulty in seeking answers to my question. Considering a MackBook Pro 13" i7 2.9 GHz 8Gb Ram, thinking about whether or not to upgrade to a 256 SSD. I posed a question earlier to an Apple tech who couldn't or refused to enlighten me on what the brand name of the SSD was. In earlier forums I had noticed they used toshiba (TS) or samsung (sm) I'm just trying to figure out what I'm spending $300 +/- on. I have also watched some videos from Mac users and from Samsung on how to install an SSD so I'm just trying to figure out if it is wise to upgrade from apple or do it my self. The SSD I was considering was the Samsung 256 830 series. Any insight this Army Veteran would be very appreciative.

yes, it's much better to do the upgrade yourself - buying the Samsung SSD is a good choice for your Macbook.
it's quite easy to clone your drive - i'll include a link on the step by steps at the bottom and you can use it for reference if you wish to do so.
with regards to Trim, you can download and install Trim Enabler - here's the link for it.
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/37852/trim-enabler
the advantage of enabling trim is for performance on the write speed.  you can either enable it if you wish to do so or leave it off.  see what works best for you.
here are the steps for cloning your hard drive to your new ssd.

  • What specs would make the perfect MacBook Air for college?

I've decided I'm going to get a MacBook Air for college, but I want to make sure it's the best possible for my four years as an undergraduate so I don't have to get a new one over this time period.
For the processor: how much of a speed difference will there be between the i5 and i7? I'm thinking the i7 will be a better choice, but I really don't know what the difference will be.
For RAM: 4gb should be plenty for four years, right? Right now I have a late 2008 aluminum MacBook with only 2gb of RAM and only recently did I notice it to start getting slow.
Storage: My biggest concern. Will 256gb last me four years? I will be bringing an external hard drive, but I plan on only really using that for Time Machine backups and storage for photos. Should I make the jump to 512gb?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

The $100 upgrade from 4GB to 8GB (personally) I think is a total no brainer. RAM is one of those things that you can never have enough of and whatever decision you make at time of purchase is the one you're stuck with for the life of the machine. I can't tell you how many times I've had a user with the 2GB model from the previous generation complain of sluggish performance over a lack of available RAM. If it was hundreds of dollars I could see but it's not, especially when you factor in the cost of the machine. Over the course of three years the RAM upgrade translates into $2.78/month and you'd be "future proofing" yourself.
As with previous generations, Apple only lets you upgrade from 256GB to 512GB if you buy the higher end model. Which means you're looking at $1999 for the 13" model with 512GB (4GB of RAM) and $1899 for the 11" model (4GB of RAM). Absolutely not worth it, unless you absolutely have to have 300-400GB of data available locally.
I came into the conversation to clear up wrong information. If there's one thing I've learned in my time posting, more points doesn't mean good information. The OP, who's new, had a question about buying decisions and was given bad information. You've never corrected someone when they wrong? Doubt it...
Regrettably, because this an open discussion forum, we're all free to respond to whoever and whenever. It's very possible that the OP may not know the technical differences between the various CPUs and thus would base his purchasing decision on your false information. Imagine his surprise when he's told that his i7 CPU is a dual core and not a quad core.
Seeing you've asked (so eloquently I might add), I'm happy to provide information on the CPUs.
The i5 in the 13" MacBook Air is an i5-3337U, the i7 is an i7-3667U. Both machines when benchmarked against one another in a PassMark CPU test scored as followed:
    i5 - 2,652
    i7 - 2,841
A difference of 189 points. You're a numbers guy, Kappy. So if real estate property #1 is worth $2,652,000 and real estate property #2 is worth 2,841,000 how much more is that property worth? It's sure not 25%.
My apologies to the OP for the divergent of your topic, but I think it's important when a frequent poster who's opinion is highly regarded but (other) members on here to be corrected when bad information is provided. I know I would expect the same correction if I recommended something incorrectly.

Having the same issue here. I unfortunately purchased a book on iTunes, then went to download iBooks, but can't due to their recent update/upgrade.  My kids iTouchs are all 6.1.5 , So I'm guessing that if you did not have iBooks previously purchased that you are now S.O.L. if you want to read a book on your iPod??
I am rather frustrated that I spent money on a book that they can't read.
Is there another app that will let them read it?

I want to upgrade to snow leopard from 10.5.8. Im hesitant to proceed because I'm running iPhoto 7 and word 2004. I want to be sure these programs will still run and I won't lose my photos or the events I have ordered them by. Should i make a partition on my new Iomega external and clone it just in case? I'm running time machine and backing up all the time onto an old LaCie, and right now I have a copy of my iPhoto library on new Iomega, which I recopy every couple of weeks. I got the computer new several years ago and it came with iLife and 10.4 OS I think.

Word 2004 is almost 10 years old, you will not be able to upgrade beyond Snow Leopard with it. IMHO you have gotten your money's worth out of the application and need to upgrade to Office for Mac 2011, this will work just fine and read your old files just fine too. What will not run beyond SL are all PowerPC (PPC) apps such as Word 2004. You will need to update, upgrade or replace any PPC based apps you want to use. I would recommend taking a little time and check for updates to each of your apps. Then open System Profiler (Applications - Utilities - System Profiler) click the Applications link on the left and then look for any PPC based apps, those are the ones that will not run. You can upgrade to SL just fine with the apps you currently have however if you want to go beyond SL (it's already 2 generations behind) you will need to update or upgrade your apps. You can take your time doing it but eventually you're going to have to begin

    - Have you tried a reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Try syncing  the iPod to your computer. Then delete from iTunes and sync. that should delete it from the iPod. Then redownload it.

  • How do you get an Ipod Classic to make Genius mixes using the songs you want?

My Ipod Classic is now about four years old. it's the grey, 160gb model. the hard drive doesn't click, so it's in stable, working condition, as far as I can tell, but lately, I've been having a few problems with it. first and foremost, it's stubbornly refusing to make Genius Playlists for me, using the songs I want. Secondly, it's not playing some songs. now, the second issue isn't new, and I've fixed it before, but that brings me to my third issue.
when opening Klondikes (because that's the only game I play on my ipod out of the three that come with it) the other day, it gave me an error message stating "game cannot be opened because ipod is full" or something like that. I have 160 gigabytes of storage, and all I have on there is music.
anyway, back to the Genius problem.
So I'll tell the Ipod to make a new Genius Mix from a selected song. in this case, I'll use Alestorm's "Keelhauled" for example. I made an edit of the song, decreasing the tempo, and drawing out the length of the song to 4:20. every single time, the ipod will use that instead of the original.
Say I use "I See Fire" by Ed Sheeran (from The Hobbit, of course). the ipod uses the Kygo Remix I have.
Say I use "One Eight Zero" by Grendel. it uses the remix.
Say I use "The Sunk'n Norwegian", by Alestorm. the Ipod uses the Acoustic version.
Say I use "7 Days to the wolves", by Nightwish. it actually uses that song, and not the Instrumental version.
for "Whispers In The Dark", by Skillet, it doesn't use it, or the Instrumental version cause it can't find a match. (not a problem, just extraneous information.)
Say I use "We Can Make The World Stop" by The Glitch Mob. it uses a piano cover.
the trend I'm noticing here is that it only applies to songs with remixes. but as I have 1408 songs on my ipod, and need to be at work in an hour, I'm not going to look through everything to find every single instance of this.
the ID3 tags for these songs are correct.
Now, this is likely just a tagging issue, but the software should treat them as different songs. after all, most of them are stored in completely different blocks of memory. most of these are even different genres than the originals. and in the case of Keelhauled, because I exported the remix from Garageband, I'm listed as the Artist.
can someone please explain to me what's going on with my ipod, or give me some insight into what's going on under the hood?

A "classic" iPod is really a hard drive with a media player tacked on.  Like any hard drive (including your computer's), it can develop data corruption.  For example, maybe you mistakenly or accidentally disconnected it from the computer while it was syncing.  Or you dropped it, while the iPod was trying to access its drive for song data.  Or the hard drive can be getting worn out and unreliable.
The Restore will not fix the problem if the hard drive is becoming faulty.  But if the data corruption was caused by something else, the Restore should fix it by erasing the hard drive to give it a "fresh start," like reformatting your computer's drive and reinstalling the OS.
