Should I organise on import or later?

At the moment most of my photos are not in iPhoto, they are sort organised in folders by date/events, eg Holiday 10, Xmas 11 etc
I have recently joined Crashplan, although I also use Time Machine.
So at the moment CrashPlan isn't backing up them folders just my iPhoto library.
So as I have loads of photos to import still, should I just import them all to iPhoto now and organise later so they are backing up, or will that be to disorganised to do. Or should I import them folder at a time, organise/tag/faces/places etc and let it backed up piece meal?
I have them backed up on an external HDD, but obviously want them backed up online.
Cheers

Which shoe do you tie first? Left or right? There's no right answer just the one that you're comfortable with.
Just a thought: We see posts on here from folks asking about the "best" cloud back up for iPhoto. I think there are a couple of considerations in this.
1. Does the service support iPhoto specifically - remember it's a database and if you're going to be writing to it it needs to be sitting on a disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - and there aren't many of those on the Internet.
2. Time: iPhoto libraries get very big very fast. Libraries in excess of 100 gigs are commonplace now, and now that everyone carries a camera of some form pretty much all the time, they are only going to grow bigger and bigger. Have you condsidered how long it might take to restore a library from an online back up? What speed will they allow you to download at? How good is your Internet connection? I mention this as we have seen reports from people complaining that it takes days to restore from online back up.
However, you're dead right. You need offsite back up incase something terrible happens to your home. FWIW this is what I worked out - and because the photos are backed up to SmugMug I can also access them from anywhere and share them with friends and family very easily.
My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to  two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.
Hope that helps.

  • Which should I use to import my photos in tho my MacBook Pro - iPhoto '11 or Lightroom 4 ? And, why, please ?

    I have two questions, please.
    1. Which should I use to import, edit and manage my photos - iPhoto 11 or Lightroom 4, and why?
    2. How do I save my edited photos as albums and export them to be stored in my Apple Time Capsule for members of my family to import and add to their Apple devices.
    Thank you.

This is an impossible question for anyone to answer for you. Only you know what you're shooting - Raw or Jpeg? Are you a Pro or an Amateur? If you're an Amateur are you a serious hobbyist or just a guy who snaps pics at the kid's birthday parties to send to Grandma.
You can compare the feature sets of the two apps. In a nutshell:
iPhoto is a $15 app. It's designed with the family snapper in mind. For that you get a lot: Lossless processing, complete management, lightweight editing, integration throughout the entire OS.
LIghtroom is about $150 these days. It's designed for a professional setting.  For that you get lossless processing - but a lot more fine control, less management, powerful editing, no integration with the OS.
From a photography point of view, if you're a pro or a serious hobbyist then there's no discussion. If you're not, then LR might well be a sledgehammer to crack a monkey nut.
If you want all the convenience of iPhoto with the power of Lightroom, check out Aperture.
As to your Q2: depends on your answer to Q1. But that's not an intended use of a Time Capsule.

“Which Firewire cable should I purchase to connect a late 2006 Intel-based iMac with a 400 port to a Mid 2010 IMac with an 800 port?”

To connect both iMacs, you need a FireWire 400 to 800 adapter, and a FireWire 400 cable, so you will be able to connect both Macs

  • How should I organise my apple accounts?

    Hi there
We are struggling to work out how to organise our Apple accounts, and wondered if anyone could provide some guidance.
We have a variety of devices (iPads, iPhones, MacBook) - but we are not coordinated at all across a family of 4. What we really want to be able to do is to store all our pictures, music and files in a central place that can be accessed across all devices. We got an Apple Mac Mini over Christmas with the purpose of being the central location.
My husband has all the music installed on his iTunes account, but on his MacBook. We understand that you can have multiple Apple IDs, multiple iTunes accounts and multiple iCloud accounts - it is all rather confusing, and not sure what the best way to set up the Apple Mac Mini so that we can coordinate the files so that they don't clog up my iPad and that we can share the files we have.
For example, should we have one generic iTunes account, and the iTunes library installed on the Mac Mini and everyone in the family have one iCloud account to allow the content to be shared across devices?
Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed?
    Many thanks!

    Copied from my initial post:
Lithium batteries, like the battery in your phone, don't like to be discharged below ~ 30% of capacity often. In fact, frequent full discharge/recharge cycles will kill these batteries.
The two biggest killers of Lithium batteries are frequent full discharge/recharge cycles & heat.

  • What user should be used when importing a Power Pivot model into SSAS tabular?

I created a Power Pivot model using my own userid.
In SSDT I can import that model but it saves the model in my own My Documents folder. In SSMS, other users can browse the data in that model.
If I tell SSDT to save the model in the Public user's My Documents, the model is not visible in SSMS for anyone to see.
If a colleague imports the model, it can be seen in SSMS but there is no data when it is browsed.
There seems to be a tie up with the user id I used when the model was first created. Is it possible to break that link, or should we have a user id specifically for creating and deploying Power BI models via SSAS tabular?

unless you have a huge mail store that is way to long.
Might be a corrupt PST file. The import locks when one of those is encountered.

  • What type of memory card should I purchase for my iMac (late 2009)?

I'd like to increase the memory on my computer, as I'm running some pretty hefty programs (Parallels with Quicken, CS6, and some architecture drafting softwares) that really bog down the processing response time. I believe that I have two slots in the back of my machine, to add memory to, but have no clue what to purchase.  I'd love to know what type of memory card I should purchase (or how to find out), in addition to the best place to buy it.
    Thank you for your feedback!
    Specs:
    iMac: 27-inch, late 2009
    Running: OSX Mountain Lion (10.8)
Processor: 3.06GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory (existing): 4GB 1067MHz DDR3
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB

    Great idea! Thanks.

  • Where should I start to import my table of data to FLA?

    Good Morning,
I am  cartographer/graphics specialist by trade but am working to apply  these  skills to flash.  I've had great luck so far moving my projects  out of  Illy and making them interactive through AS3.
I am at the point where I'd  like to incorporate tables of attribute  data specific to my movie  clips.  For example, tables of demographic  info specific to US  counties.  I'd like to make these data queriable by  clicking on a  specific county (mc).  I've been reading some tutorials  and it sounds  like I should convert my data to xml (from a CSV or XLS)  and then import  the XML to my stage and start learning the ins/outs of  calling on its  values.
Am  I starting down the right path?  First off, I've not found a very   straightforward way to get my data into XML.  It originates in a DBF and   i could easily convert it to tab-del text, csv or anything else.  Any   suggestions?
Also,  should i rethink where I am starting with this and not use XML   altogether, maybe using something else?
    thanks in advance....
    -josh

for relatively simple data using an xml file is the way to proceed.  for more complex (or extensive) data, using a sql database is the way to proceed.

  • How to save or export your iTunes playlist to re-import for later use?

    How can that be done?

If you copy your entire iTunes folder to the new iMac, (that would include all the database files in the iTunes folder -- not just your music folder), then you should have your playlists in the new library.

  • How should I organise my video clips?

I don't take video seriously, just have some video clips from my digital camera. What is the typical way of storing video clips? I have music, TV shows and movies in itunes, photos in Lightroom. Is iPhoto good for managing video clips, and are they then accessible from iMovie?

Please have a look at my post at:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5649660?tstart=0
where I describe what files should be present for iMovie 9 to work for someone else with a similar problem.  They must either be in the users Movies folder on the start up drive or at the root level of any other partition or connected external drive.

  • How to make a package and import it later

    Hi folks,
this is a very basic question but it is not working to me so i will appreciate your comments.
I had programmed many classes that are going to be used in many projects so they must be part of a library. Tell me whether or not this procedure is correct ?
Compile those classes into .class files. Create a package with the jar application putting the .class files into a single file called my_utils ( .jar or .zip ?). Import the package from other projects using the import directive and storing the my_utils file in the project's library directory. Is this correct ?
    Many thanks in advance
    Marla.

If you want to create a package and then put the package into a jar file, first compile into .class files (in appropriate package directories), then jar all of the .class files.
    Here's a link for a tutorial on packages. http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/interpack/packages.html
    Here's a link for a jar file tutorial. http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/jar/index.html
You do not have put the .class files into a jar. Java packages are used for organizing classes, managing class name space, and controlling access to classes. Java jar files are a way to put multiple classes into a single file while compressing the content. Jar files can contain multiple packages and packages do not have to be inside of jar files.

  • Which format camcorder should I buy to import the way I want?

I currently have an old Sony digital8 camcorder which works fine, but I find myself using my regular digital camera (Canon SD100) to shoot video because I don't have to import video in real time. It just pulls the video files right out of iPhoto from when I import my photos off the camera. I'd like to get a new camcorder, but I want the new one to be able to work the same. Maybe not import into iPhoto, but import as a file and not real time. What a hassle when I have to sit there and playback and record a 45 minute movie of my father-in-laws 70th birthday party into iMovie, before I can even work on it. I'm not sure if any of the DVD formats will let me do this or if I have to playback the movie again. Is a hard drive camcorder my only solution? Any info would be great. Thanks.

I like Canon MUCH better than Sony. Sony is a direct competitor of Apple and as such I think they support Apple with reduced enthusiasm.
Canon makes excellent equipment and their technical support people always seem Macintosh savvy (They were very familiar with iMovie).
    http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategoryid= 173
I use my Canon with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08. (and occasionally with iMovie 08)
