Should I remove Java plug-ins?

I've heard there's a security problem with Java plug-ins.  Should I remove them from my MacBook?  If so how?

Thanks for the help.

    I've been going entirely on the almost universal statement that installing Lion does not install Java by default. I'm very aware of the fact that older versions of OS X actually rely on the use of Java for some system functions, but I've been told that is no longer the case. If that were so, then there is no need for any Java to be present, yet you say it is there and you aren't the only one who has told me that.
    But exactly how much Java is installed by default? Obviously not enough to use it for browsing. In the days of the Java 6 Preferences app, it used to alert you that Java was not installed and offer to do so.  What happens with standalone apps like CrashPlan in Lion that require Java, do they have enough, by default, to run?
    The only Java component missing in these OSs is the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Peruse those installations, looking in these directories, and be enlightened:
    /Applicatons/Utilities/->Java Preferences.app
    /Library/Java/
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/->JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
    /System/Library/CoreServices/->
            Jar Launcher.app
            Java Web Start.app
            JavaVersion.plist
    /System/Library/Frameworks->
            JavaFrameEmbedding.framework
            JavaScriptCore.framework
            JavaVM.framework
    /System/Library/LaunchAgents/->
    com.apple.java.InstallOnDemand.plist
    com.apple.java.updateSharing.plist
    /System/Library/Java
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/->
            JavaApplicationLauncher.framework
            JavaLaunching.framework
    to name a few, but probably not all the Java components installed with OS Xs. Then, stop saying Java's not installed, when only the JRE component is missing.
    There has been speculation from some that perhaps it migrated from an older system or that Lion was installed on top of the older system. There's also some confusion these days about what actually constitutes a "clean install".
    AFAICT, it's speculated wrongly. As for the clean install, I define it to occur when the user wipes the drive, installs the OS, sets up everything, and then installs all 3rd-party software. Then, the installation is clean. If there's any migration involved, then it's not clean. i've not done one for over ten years and my OSs started with 9.2->Jaguar->to the current three.

  • Java Plug Ins

    What is the security problem with Java plug ins and do I need to disable Java plug ins on my Mac computers?

    The newly discovered zero-day flaw in Java 7 is so serious that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has warned users to disable or uninstall it, and Apple has disabled the Java 7 plugin on Macs through its OS X anti-malware system, in order to protect users from a potentially serious security issue.
    You should disable Java (if not already done) until either the US Department of Homeland Security, or Oracle, declare it safe and Apple restore the facility. Javascript should not be disabled (it has nothing to do with Java).
    However, if you need the Jave 6 JRE and plug-in, MadMAC0 has posted at
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20107182?ac_cid=tw123456#20107182
    Apple has also posted (Oct 22/12) the approved solution for restoring the Java 6 plug-in:
    Java for OS X 2012-006: How to re-enable the Apple-provided Java SE 6 applet plug-in and Web Start functionality.

  • "How to remove incompatible plug-ins" in the Mail.

    I have installed Intego/virus barrier and after removed it. Every time I open the Mail now I receive the message: "Incompatible plug-ins disabled". I have to press OK, the mail works fine, but is annoying

    The basic question is ... How did you remove it?
    Many? Most? apps install things in various system directories independent of /Applications where the app itself resides. Simply dragging "the app" to the trash does NOT delete these items.
    "Theoretically," the vendor provided an "un-install" script.
    You might find the info you need here:

    Otherwise you might need to contact Intego directly.

  • Automation: How to allow java plug-ins to run when the page is invoked via Selenium FF driver?

    My automated test involves navigating to a webpage on a remote system (via Selenium Firefox Driver) which runs a Java Plug-in to launch an embedded Java Applet. When the test first ran, I connected to the remote system (via Remote Desktop) and manually selected "Allow and Remember" as the plug-in was trying to run. However, this only addressed that first instance; it didn't address subsequent instances where I wanted to run the same test, same server (same plug-in).

    Sure, it's been in every newspaper and network TV news. Java browser plugins below v1.7.10.19 are vulnerable to exploitation and have been disabled by Apple, Firefox & Chrome.  You either need to update your installation to Oracle's Java 7 update 11 or do without.

  • I am not sure its safe to update my java plug ins so i ignored it. everything else is updated. what should I do? nothing?

    I read all the reports about how unsafe java is. I am very leery about updating it or even touching that plug in. do I need java and what does it do? I see it says I need to update it. but I did not even go there.

    If you use Java, you should always keep it up to date (The latest version if Java 7 update 11). That being said, if you don't use it (it's normally used by some websites for games and other content) you should disable it.

    Drag the items to the trash, empty the trash & restart your comp.
    Prior to doing the above, go to Option key>Finder>Go>Library>Preferences.  Trash all the Twitter & Facebook plist files that you find.
