Should I replace WRT54GL v1.1

I have a WRT54GL v 1.1 and after reading the problems people have encountered updating the firmware, I've decided it may be best, since my router is old anyways and doesn't support n, to upgrade to a new router.
I of course would rather not spend any money (since I'm not working now anyways) but if you have any kind of sure proof way for me to flash my current router without having to spend hours trying to troubleshoot it I would really appreciate it?
This thread really got me scared: WRT54GS v1.1, GS v2, and GS2.1 models can brick after a hard reset no matter how it is done. See this thread and the solution in Vulcan's post: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=45024
I wouldn't even know how to apply this solution!!
If you know my current router is going to give me problems "what is a cheap or reasonably priced router that I can buy and upgrade the firmware to dd-wrt without headaches?"
Thanks for your help.

Getting a new router I should say is the smart thing to do due to the fact that our technology now is evolving into a very fast phase with innovations every now and then. Apparently, your network will benefit from those technologies they offer. Though one cannot guarantee a device's sustainability because the reality bites that not all is really what it seems but of course there's always a way to go over it.

I went to my local Apple store last weekend with a similar issue on my 2007 C2D MBP and they quoted me a price of around £60 (excluding VAT) to replace the optical drive. That's about the same price as the external optical drive a bought for my RMBP.
Alternatively you could just buy a 3rd party external drive if you want to save cash but note that the external Apple superdrive is not compatible with MacBooks with built in optical drives.

    EmadJamal,
the battery won’t melt because of long connection to the AC charger, although that has the potential of reducing the battery’s life.
Do you have access to a second 60 W AC charger to test with your MacBook Pro, or access to a second 13-inch MacBook Pro against which your AC charger could be tested?

  • Should I replace the HD?

as mentioned in a former topic, I had a severe crash after installing SL.
Everybody advised me to change the HD, although every tool I took proved it to be o.k....
Since I reinstalled Leopard (not SL), everything seems to be fine, except using the migration assistant, which does not seem to work, so I could not prove if my usual stuff (i.e. Logic studio/CS4) runs properly.
Should I replace the HD? Does the HD still cause problems?
    Any help?

I don't disagree with most of what you say but a few things might be worth considering.
AFAIK, all modern ATA drives use some form of low level error correction & detection, typically CRC, & automatically map out blocks that fail that test after some number of retries. This occurs on all normal reads of physical blocks & is independent of the host computer.
Utilities like TTP at one point (& possibly still today) supplemented this by performing tests that in effect artificially reduce the number of retries to a very low number on the theory that the drive will allow "weak" blocks (those that take several retries to pass error correction tests) to continue to be used until they fail, causing data loss. These "weak" blocks would then be mapped out in some way by the utility. IMO, the value of this is debatable because in effect it assumes that a third party vendor knows more about preventing data loss than the manufacturer of the drive. It also can map out blocks that have no real problems since this kind of "soft" error (failed CRC on a single read) occurs routinely in modern very high density drives.
Absent this kind of utility overruling the disks own checks & mapping out what might be perfectly good blocks, it is sometimes useful to check how many spare blocks have been mapped in & just as importantly how many remain because this tells you something about a suspect drive's continuing reliability. This is where I see vendor utilities and/or SMART Utility for the Mac being of some value. However, since most drives' built-in SMART systems monitor the same thing, I don't think most users need to worry about this … at least for internal drives for which SMART monitoring is supported by the OS.
BTW, by "increasing frequency" of bad blocks, what I meant was something I have observed in the past: when the bad block count suddenly starts growing, it is usually a sign of impending drive failure. Usually this is because the drive's platter has shed magnetic media, perhaps because of a head crash, & the debris are getting trapped between the head & platter & gouging out still more media. Again, if SMART monitoring is available for the drive, it should detect this.

I recently bought Ipad 3, should I replace it with Ipad 4? Does it matter to replace? Is it worth?

If you bought it from Apple within the past 14 days, you can get a refund and buy the iPad 4. Other stores may have a different return policy. Otherwise, you'll have to sell the iPad 3.

When I opened it and tried to drag the icon into my application file, I got a pop-up message saying that a newer version of Firefox existed and did I want to replace it. Should I replace my Firefox 5 or is there something else I can do?
I'm afraid I'll lose my browser.

    * Download a new copy of the Firefox program: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install.
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded.

  • Isopropyl Alcohol got under the screen, should I replace it?

I was cleaning my commuter yesterday with Isopropyl Alcohol as one of my mom's co-wokers said it was the way to clean he screen. After this happened I read that constant contact causes an LCD screen to become brittle to the extent it cracks. When should I replace my computer? When it shows sign of cracking or now?

Ok, you used Isopropyl Alcohol on the screen but it hasn't cracked.
But you got some under the screen, meaning you used too much.
Just wait for it to dry, it will eventually.
Alcohol breaks up the human oils that creates smudges on the screen, your supposed to tab a little on a cloth and then wipe the oil away, then use a new clean spot and repeat, removing the oil onto the cloth as the alcohol evaporates fast.
No liquid is to get insdie the machine, especially the built in keyboard.

  • Should I replace failed hard drive in imac 4,1 or run from external or mac mini?

My hard drive failed in my iMac 4,1 (early 2006 intel). I am running from an external drive, but slow. Should I replace the hard drive ($300 at Apple), purchase a better external to run from or a mac mini? I'm trying to determine if it makes sense to invest further in this iMac since its 5 yrs old already. Can any one offer some insight/opinion?

    Hi moreenie
Your profile does not indicate your geographic location, but there are Authorize Apple Service Providers that can and will do the work for considerably less than your local Apple Store.
    http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
Call around, at less than $200 to replace the Hard Drive, it makes a little more sense to fix and use it for another year or two...
I replace the Hard Drive in my Early 2006 a couple of years ago not because it died, but because it became to small.
Sorry I can't honestly help you decide, because I'm torn and can't decide for myself. Not liking the Glossy iMac's, I've also been toying with the idea of either a Mac-Mini or used Mac Pro? My biggest problem with the Mac-Mini is, that by the time you do a few upgrades it cost as much as a base iMac.

My iphone 5 gets hot while using it and while charging too.... Please help me what should i do?? Should i replace the battery....??  Because it gets hot even within 5 minutes also....  And it is happening from 2 weeks daily.

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...
    Restart / Reset   >  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Backing up, Updating and Restoring  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you try all these steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...
Be sure to make an appointment first...

  • When should I replace my battery ?

Just wondering when the battery should be replaced. I have noticed when its fully charged i get at the most 5 hours where when I bought it I was getting 7 hours.

    According to Apple:
When your battery no longer holds sufficient charge to meet your needs, you may choose to replace it. If your notebook came with a built-in battery, you should have the battery replaced only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
I would add that if the battery status indictor shows that the battery requires service, that evaluation may be necessary by an Apple Authorized Service Provider. More information here.
