Should I restore from Time Machine, replace hard drive, or neither?
I appeared to have a full functioning Macbook Pro, until I ran Onyx, and after scanning my hard drive, it said that there were issues and restarting in recovery mode and repairing the disc should be done. Both Disk Utility and DiskWarrior were unable to repair the damaged hard drive.
Obviously replacing the hard drive would sort out the problem, and I realise that it might be a sign of the start of a failing hard drive... OS X said to backup, erase my drive and restore, so should I do a restore from Time Machine?
Or should I just leave things now until there are more signs of failure?

OnyX runs the same Disk Utility program that's in your Applications/Utilties folder, it uses the Terminal/command line verision. The Disk Utility program is a GUI front end to the Terminal version.
OnyX launched the Terminal version of Disk Utility in other words, and so it's Disk Utility that is telling you that there is a problem with the drive it's unable to repair.
it said that there were issues and restarting in recovery mode and repairing the disc should be done.
Disk Utility on the Macintosh HD partition (in OS X) is telling you to boot into Recovery HD partition and use that version of Disk Utiltiy to repair the Macintosh HD partition. To do this you hold the command and r keys down and boot the computer.
Both Disk Utility and DiskWarrior were unable to repair the damaged hard drive.
Yes because to be able to repair the Macintosh HD partition it can't be booted from, why you instead boot from the Recovery HD partition instead.
Obviously replacing the hard drive would sort out the problem
You don't need to go that far at this point, unless the drive is having mechanical issues.
OS X said to backup, erase my drive and restore, so should I do a restore from Time Machine?
You have software issues, when booted from the Recovery HD partition that version of Disk Utiltity says it can't repair the Macintosh HD partition then it's time to erase the Macintosh HD partition and restore from TimeMachine.
However there could be a problem if the data on your TimeMachine drive is not current or is also corrupted which it copied from the failing internal drive.
You might want to perform data recovery steps first to grab your data off the Macintosh HD partition so you have a clean copy.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
If this is all above your head, your local PC/Mac repair shop will image your current boot drive to a new extenral drive, then erase the Macintosh HD partition and reinstall OS X for you or restore from TimeMachine etc.
They will hand you the external drive with your files and everything which you can pick through to restore back to your machine.
It all depends how important your data is, because if you go and erase the Macintosh HD partition, your destroying one of your copies leaving only one on the TimeMachine drive, which might be in worst shape or outdated without your knowledge.

Restore from time machine after hard drive install
I just had apple replace my hard drive on my Imac. I backed up everything with my external hard drive My Book. Tried to do a restore with Time Machine and it won't do it. I get a message that come up that says "Time Machine can't be modified or deleted because its required by Mac OS X. What steps am I missing to restore with Time Machine?

We recently had the hard drive replaced on our Mac as part of Apple's replacement programme. Prior to sending it off for repair we did a final Time Machine back up, which was completed successfully. SInce getting the computer back we restored everything from the backup disk using Time Machine, which all worked fine, however now we are having problems with it completing regular backups. We receive a message each time telling up that the backup disk doesn't have enough space on it. It is telling us that it needs in the region of 370gb and only has around 30gb available. The computer hard drive is in the region of 350gb and the hard drive is a 400gb one. It is almost as if it is not recognising that the data already on the disk is the back up of this computer and is trying to complete a completely separate back up as opposed to just updating the backup already on the disk.
Has anyone else got any experience of this and therefore could give me some hints on what to do. I am reluctant to wipe the backup drive and start again, however I would prefer not to have to buy another hard drive if I can avoid it as this one is technically big enough
I look forward to getting some responsesHi, I never use TM myself.

Restore from Time Machine or Clone Drive?
If I am moving everything to a new hard drive is it better to restore from time machine or just clone the drive using something like carbon copy cloner?
Unless you encrypted the backup you should be able to open the backup.bachupdb folder and copy items out of it.
It is just a folder like anyother where all your files got placed by time machine. I have accessed mine every now and then and just copied the data I need directly from that folder.
Open a finder window and browse to that folder and open it. -
Restored my iMac from Time Machine now Hard Drive has doubled! Need Space!
I Restored my new (refurbished) iMac 2010 (Snow Leopard 10.6.4) from Time Machine now the Hard Drive has doubled 450GB to 900GB. I want to recover the space on my hard drive, What do I do?
Side Note: My previous iMac (2007) died so I went and bought a refurbished model here. My old iMac had 10.6.8 installed versus my "new" iMac has 10.6.4 installed. I can't restore from my Time Machine since it was from another model.Since it's a new (refurb), boot with the install disc, wipe the HD, and reinstall the OS. On first boot, don't migrate, but create an admin account using the same username/password combo as on the TM backup. When finished, run Software Update, and bring it up to 10.6.8. Then, mount the TM HD and try restoring. Life would be so much easier if you had a bootable backup/clone. Instantly able to migrate.

Full Restore from Time Capsule after hard drive failure
Authorized agent replaced hard drive after it failed. Installed 10.5.5 and currently attempting to do a full restore from Time Capsule - progress is slow and in question after 22 hours. The backup size approx. 100 gb.
Screen reads "Transferring Information" at the top, progress bar is moving, and bottom of the screen reads "Looking for applications and documents to transfer" and hasn't changed for 22 hours.
Is this normal? how long should 100 gb take to restore?think about the speed of wifi here
speed at 802.11n = a theoretical 540Mbps (less in real world scenarios)
Mbps = Mega bits per second
MBps - Mega bytes per second
8 bits = 1 byte
8 mega bits = 1 mega byte
How long would it take you to download a 1 gig file from the internet wired into your modem? About 10-20 min? And that is taking into account that the info is being uploaded hardwire. Now imagine that same file over wireless in your home being upload by the Airport card in your computer. People over look upload speed when considering these things. The wireless upload speed of your Airport card is what is limiting this. Just a limitation of the technology, not a fault of Apple just stating the numbers here. -
Restore from Time Capsule after Hard Drive Crash
The HD on my iMac crashed Christmas Day. I have been running backups on Time Machine to a Time Capsule since I purchased the iMac (and also backing up a MacBook Air), but never had any occasion to see if it worked.
I yesterday got the computer back with a new HD installed. When I tried to do the restore from Time Capsule from the Setup Assistant which ran on start up, I could not get past the initial screen. It kept hanging up on "Opening Time Capsule," and then on one occasion it found only the MacBook Air back up volume.
After some research here, I tried running the utility after booting from my Snow Leopard disk. This time, it immediately found the backups from both computers, but hung up on opening the iMac backup.
After more research, I ran the disk utility and repaired the HD on the iMac. It finally worked -- I woke up to a "Restore Complete" message (it started around 10:00 pm last night). The iMac started up without a hitch to the way it looked Christmas morning. The only problem I have noticed is that my most recent events in iPhoto are empty. The thumbnails are there, but no pictures. I tried to rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager, but no luck. Any ideas?
The other thing I noticed is that I had to reauthorize the computer for my iTunes purchases. Will Apple fix that so it doesn't chew up my last remaining authorization?think about the speed of wifi here

I am keeping my work files on an external drive which are backed up using Time Machine onto my computer's hard drive. I set it up this way so I can take my actual work drive with me if I need it. However, I just noticed that I can't see any of those files in time machine if the drive itself isn't plugged in, which makes this method useless. Is there any way to get to those, or do I need to reconfigure my backup system? I always thought if something happened to my hard drive I'd have a backup, but that won't work if I can't get to the files.

Cannot restore from Time Capsule after hard drive replacement (recall)!
Hard drive was replaced on a recall from Apple. I have spent weeks on the phone with Applecare whose conclusion now is that a WD drive I had connected about a year ago (and which was disconnected and software uninstalled) has corrupted the files on the Time Capsule (?) Anyone heard of that?
I am a photographer and all my photos are there (?) The capsule appears to be quite full.
Anyways Apple won't pay for recovery since they say 3d party software caused the issue.. WHY DO THEY SELL THOSE DRIVES IN THE STORE THEN?
Solutions anyone?See Pondini's <a href="http://Pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html">TM FAQs</a>, for starters.
As for why they carry 3rd-party stuff in the stores, that's to satisfy their customers desires, but they don't guarantee them to work. WD externals have s a history of being crapola w/Macs, since they're focused on windows boxes. -
Clicked on a suspect link--should I restore from time machine?
Hey, was hoping I could get some advice. I accidentally clicked on what I belive was a phishing link. I didn't enter any account information on the site nor did I seem to download or install anything. But I'm pretty sure I have installed Java at some point and most certainly did not have it disabled--so from what I have read it sounds like there is a possibility that I could have picked up some malware from this site. I cleared my browser cache and and shut down my iMac and haven't brought it back up yet. i've changed all my major passwords on another machine. So here's what I'm looking for some insite on: I have a time machine backup that is a week or so old stored on an external drive that wasn't attached to my iMac at the time. Do I restore my machine from the time machine from back up? Would that be sufficient or would I need to first delete the drive and reinstall the OS? Am I totally overreacting? Any advice would be welcome, thanks!
As long as you didn't download or install anything there is nothing you need to do.

Transferring data from Time Machine external hard drive to band new mac
My husband bought me a brand new Mac but then powered it up to play with it and bypassed the magic transfer option at the very beginning which would have allowed me to transfer my backed up info from my old mac to this new one.
Is there a process that I need to go through now to make sure this information transfers correctly or do I just plug in my external hard drive and let it do its thing.
My worry is that I do something wrong and Time Machine doesn't know that I need to transfer to a new mac, it sincs with the new mac and the old data gets somehow erased.
Paranoid? Oh yes!
Thanks for any help....Time Machine transfers of backed up info to any Mac are not automatic, nor does any backed up info get erased from the Time Machine backup when you do a transfer. You have two options for copying Time Machine backup files to the new Mac:
1. Use Migration Assistant (found in Applications/Utilities) to migrate (copy) items to the new Mac. Select "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" as the migration method, then select the Time Machine backup of the old Mac, then select the items you want to transfer. You can select some or all of the user accounts on the old Mac, Applications (all or none), Settings files (Time Zone, Machine, and/or Network), & "Other" files & folders (which are any other root level files & folders not included in the above).
If you have already set up your network, time zone, etc. settings while playing with the new Mac then there is no particular need to migrate the old ones. If you migrate Applications, Migration Assistant will not replace newer versions with older ones, but it may transfer some old apps that don't work with Snow Leopard. This won't do any harm, but you may want to delete the incompatible apps as you discover them to save space on the new hard drive.
If you have created a new user account on the new Mac with the same name as some account on the old Mac, you will have to either give the old account a new name for the transfer or replace the new account with the old one, which will erase any user files you have created in the new account. Thus, you should save any such files to a backup if you want to keep them.
2. Use Time Machine itself to restore selected files or folders from the Time Machine backup of the old Mac to the new one. Open Time Machine from the Dock, choosing "Browse Other Time Machine Disks…" from the popup options. Again, choose the Time Machine backup of the old Mac, & then select whatever dated backup you want to restore items from.
All this is harder to explain than to do in actual practice -- for the first method you get on-screen guidance for each step & for the second the interface is pretty intuitive. -
Hi, I have been using an external hard drive as a backup for my Mac using Time Machine. I was under the impression that once the backup drive became full, it would start to delete previous versions of the backup. However, instead of doing that, it has just stopped working and I now cannot access the hard drive via a Mac or a PC. On the PC, it does at least show up in that it will allow me to disconnect it safely but I cannot do anything else with it.
I am now looking to reformat it, and start again from scratch - but can't do this as it doesn't show up anywhere. Does anyone have any advice about how I can get this working again?
Thanks. Can you see the drive in Disk Utility? If so, try selecting it and using the Mount button in the top menu. You can also run repair disk and repair permissions.

Restore from time machine to other drive
I have a new iMac with the SSD drive inside - I have an 'old' Time Machine backup of my older computer - I already used Migration Assistant to move and update etc. the Applications themselves on the SSD -- but I want to restore the DATA from the TM backups [i.e. the user folders and contents] to an external drive connected to the computer -- how do I do that???
NathanL1192 -- it's very weird but when I look on your page it shows the beginning of your Reply but when I Come directly to this page there is no reply from you?? That is true whether or not I am signed in = see below = so I know you replied and had an answer but I can't find enough information to be sure! Thanks. - the picture below is of what I see when I look at this page = no reply, tho I know you did one.

Safari Crashes On Startup after restore from Time Machine after hard disk crash
I have a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.4, 4 GB memory , 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. My 160 GB hard disk crashed two weeks ago and was replaced by the apple store. I was backed up on a 500 GB Time Capsule and restored my system from that source. Everything works appropriately except Safari (Version 5.1.6).
Steps taken to date based on discussions here:
1. Updated all software
2. Booted in safe mode, still crashes
3. Booted as guest, still crashes
Any additional help I can get would be appreciated. In the meantime I have been using Firefox, but all the links that go from email or browswer messages load Safari and it crashes every time.
Thanks, G. Silver

I think I solved this. From another question on the forum, I found the following:
Download and install Safari 6 from this link (it's the link used by software update to download Safari6 for Lion 10.7.4) :
http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/37/23/041-5058/lr5tynbldi18zcrqo8a8uq88 rnjushqliu/Safari6Lion.pkg
I did this and Safari 6.0 is now up and running without crashing and all my bookmarks etc were preserved.
Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction. I would stll be interested in why Software Update wouldn't download Safari 6.0.
All the best,

Imac won't restore from time machine backup after HD (hard drive) recall replacement
I have an imac bought in 2011, running Snow Leopard. It required an HD replacement due to the 1 TB Seagate recall - the replacement was done by a certified Apple repair station yesterday. Before the guy left he started a backup/restore from my latest time machine backup set. It failed. I attempted it two times and got error messages that it failed and the computer needed to be restarted to try it again. No luck. I called the guy back and he told me to call Apple Care. Not thrilled about that response since the guy had just left my house I did what he told me to do. (A quick sideline here: I recognize that a time machine backup should be no big deal and SHOULD work everytime, but it doesn't. It irks me that Apple is replacing my HD through no fault of mine and yet they don't allow the restore of data to be a "covered" expense in this process - this isn't just because this was an authorized repair guy - the Apple store would have done the same).
Back to the issue. When I called apple care they pretty much had me try the same thing again with an earlier back up set. To my knowledge, it didn't work. I say this because it looked like it was working and when I came back to the imac later, it had restarted and once again booted to the OSX install. (The boot disc is still in the imac). When I tried to boot from another location, one did not show up to boot from so I assumed that the data didn't transfer and it forced another restart. So, I tried something else. I tried to re-install the snow leopard OSX without using the restore function. That appeared to work and then when the machine restarted it asked if I had another mac and I chose the option to get the files/apps/etc. from my time machine backup. The computer chose what I can only assume is the most recent backup set (It chose what I know to be a subfolder that appears under the dated backup folder - Macintosh HD--which btw is confusing seeing as that's always the name of the HD on the imac). I again stepped away from the computer so it could do its thing for two hours. When I returned, I was back to the MAC OSX screen that asks you to choose a language. There were no more options to choose DISK UTILITY or RESTORE FROM BACKUP, etc. When I clicked on English it took me right back into the screen where you say whether you have another Apple that you want to transfer data from. I realized that the imac must have restarted and I assumed maybe it was because the boot disk was still in - except how do you get the disc to eject? I also initially assumed that the backup had somehow failed again and triggered a restart. I tried to choose the option to just set up the machine without transferring data and when I got to the choose a name for your HOME folder message I tried to enter the same name I had it as before and it wouldn't allow me to do so, saying that that name was already in use. I also tried a different name and that didn't work either - got the same message (I assume if it is not the same name that it won't sync up with the time machine data from the backup set). So, I almost tried the "select time machine backup" option again until I looked at my HD space. Clearly, there is space that has been used. HD space was 997 at the start and now it's 636. My initial thought is to somehow get back into the setup area where I can use disc utility and erase the whole thing and then start over but 1) I don't think it's going to work even if I could get back there 2) I have no idea how to get this thing to reboot into that mode 3) I can't get the boot CD out to even try to restart to see if this thing did what it was supposed to, SO NOW I AM TOTALLY STUCK! I have not called Apple Care back because quite frankly they were useless the first time. I have a call into the repair guy but who knows how much help he will be. In the mean time, I have a million things to do and a computer that isn't working - Whoever said Apples never have issues needs to be seriously censored!
A few other notes: I use Time Machine Editor to run my backups weekly. It was set up that way from the get go by an Apple rep who came to my house to get us up and running. Editor should not effect the way that time machine does its work, so I doubt there is relevance but thought it worth mentioning.
One other note is that the Apple Care agent tried to have me do something called a "Source" something or other from the disk utility screen but when she realized that my backup file (shown by date) contained many other sub files (11-27-12/MacintoshHD/MyNamesIMAC/etc.), it was not possible to run this operation - thus we aborted. Sorry I don't remember the name of the process and unfortunately now can't access that option to go find it.
If you can help me, I would be eternally grateful! I am open to having a phone conversation if you are willing to give me your email to mail you my number. I have so much work to do this week and this was the last thing I needed. Did I mention this was supposed to be EASY?
I used to be quite the geek with my PC - still on the learning curve with the mac but not enjoying it. I am fairly tech savvy and I can follow instructions for a step by step solution if you've got one.I got a recall and had the drive replaced. I have retored 3 timesa dn even had apple do the job and it is still not right. I still can't get a simple ghost of the data from time machineback tot he new drive.
This is Apple's explaination as taken from their web page.:
Restoring your entire system from a backup
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Recovery system (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility.
Note: If "You can't restore this backup because it was created by a different model of Mac" appears when restoring a backup that was made on a different Mac, follow the onscreen instructions.
I even posted this information on the community and apple removed it... because they don't like the:
Off-topic or non-technical posts
Non-constructive rants or complaints
But here is my experieince:
Take in 27iMac running 10.6.8, 5-7 days, what a joke, my boss will be happy to pay for a week without working. Finally get, "if you have TM back up, 3 days." Get machine back with 10.6.3, hit the R recovery, click TM back up, runs for 2 hours, reboots, looks great. Box up take back to office... update to install - OH NO, still running 10.6.3. Updates crash with no specific error on install, BUG PROBELM, nothing runs.
Call Apple... after hours, tells me to boot using 10.6.2 disk, wipe, reinstall OS, udate to 10.6.8, THEN do the restore. GREAT! Only thing 10.6.2 DVD won't read... now back on phone... take back to the store, Genius says, he'll ix it just like it was. PROMISES it'll be fixed.
Pick up next day, supposedly, booted to disk, wiped drive, reinstalled, updated to 10.6.8 and THEN did the RIGHT restore... Looks GREAT... apps run and 10.6.8 OS. Back to the office... NOT RUNNING right!!!... fonts messed up, drop box app needs new install, cocktail needs upgrade, Fetch not working, memorized paths gone... back ups locked out of permissions... ***!!
4 hours on phone with apple and still no rsolution - to missing "settings". Seems there are THREE WAYS TO RESTORE (according to apply tech)... Running MIGRATE ASSISTANT and being able to choose your files, including settings, "R" RESTORE after they load a new OS... or NOW WAITING for them to send me a bootable 10.6.3 disk and then boot from disk, w/o installing OS and doing a restore from TM. I think this is done via the disk Utilties application.
So now can't back up without doing a full 400 GB back up since permissons are screwed and possibly destroying any good back ups... can't work, like having hands tied behind back. WAITING for solution! Very upset!!!
I did my first restore just like they said and now an 10 days without proper machine. Just FYI. I thnk I am going to make the store do the tech work so I have somthing to fall back on.
