Should I restore Java Shared Archive in 10.3.9

Does anyone know if restoring the Java Shared Archive (JSA) is still necessary on a Mac running OS X 10.3.9, QuickTime 7.1.2, and Java 1.4.2? I know that restoring the JSA was an optional step for those users whose Java implementation stopped working under the combination of OS X 10.3.9 and QuickTime 7.0.4. But, I'm wondering if it is still necessary (optional or not) now that QuickTime 7.1.x is released.
Here's why I'm asking. I recently updated my dad's iBook G4 to OS X 10.3.9 and QuickTime 7.1.2. The iBook went straight from 10.3.8 to 10.3.9 and QT 6.5.2 to 7.1.2. I applied Security Update 2006-003 (which, apparently, automatically included the Java Update for Mac OS X 10.3.9). I performed each of these many upgrades one at a time. I repaired permissions and/or rebooted between each update and I'm pleased to say that there were NO problems with the installations and the iBook is working just great!
The only update I haven't yet done is the Java Security Update 4.0. I plan to do that in the next day or so. Anyway, when I upgraded my Power Mac G4 to OS X 10.3.9, I lived through the QuickTime 7.0.4 / broken Java nightmare! I still haven't applied the Security Update 2006-003 or the QuickTime 7.1.x updates on my Mac because I was wary of Java being broken again. But, I was willing to use my dad's iBook as a guinea pig! I hoped that going straight to QuickTime 7.1 would avoid the broken Java problem. Apparently, it (or the Java Update for 10.3.9) did avoid the problem. I'm more comfortable with the idea of updating QuickTime on my own Mac.
But, as I said, I'm wondering if I should restore the JSA on my dad's iBook.

After successfully updating my dad's iBook and not running into any problems, I decided to update my own Power Mac G4 from QuickTime 7.0.1 to 7.1.2.
Well, my Java applications are broken AGAIN! I don't get a segmentation fault error message when I type java -version in Terminal. My own amateur Java programs run. Safari doesn't crash and Java applets work properly. But, standalone Java apps crash just like they did with QuickTime 7.0.4 installed!
I was perfectly willing to stay with QuickTime 7.0.1 indefinitely but I want to buy TV shows from the iTunes Music Store and I can't do that unless I upgrade QuickTime to at least version 7.0.3 (which I believe is where the conflicts with Java began)!
Are there any other Panther users who have found a solution to this catch-22?

  • Java - Shared archive: sharing disabled for server vm ?

    Hi,
My mac is PowerMac G5(1.8Ghz) + leopard server 10.5.1.
    I have a question.
After typing *java -version*, the following messages are shown.
*Shared archive: sharing disabled for server vm*
    *java version "1.5.0_13"*
*Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_13-b05-237)*
*Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_13-119, mixed mode)*
What is *Shared archive: sharing disabled for server vm* ?
    Using my other macs, iMac(Intel 1.8GHz) and PowerBook G4(1.5GHz) + leopard client-10.5.1,
    the message is
    *java version "1.5.0_13"*
*Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_13-b05-237)*
*Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_13-119, mixed mode, sharing)*
    So, the difference is "sharing".
    Anyone know what it means?

I'm getting the same message. I'm intrigued. This would seem to be something to do with the new version of Java
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_13-b05-237)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_13-119, mixed mode, sharing)
I don't get the message when doing java -version, but I do get it when starting JBoss:
./run.sh: line 80: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Invalid argument
run.sh: Could not set maximum file descriptor limit: unlimited

  • Restore iPhone from archived, time-stamped backup

    Hi all,
Long story, but after having the battery of my iPhone 5 replaced I now need to restore from an archived, time-stamped backup that iTunes created when I last restored my Phone.  Current iTunes version, IOS 8.1.3, up-to-date Windows Vista.
I can't figure out how to get iTunes to see that backup and let me use it ... only the current incremental backup is visible in iTunes.
Any help will be hugely appreciated!  TIA - John

Uninstalling & reinstalling iTunes won't have any benefit.
Assuming you haven't done it already go to Edit > Preferences > Devices and tick the box against Prevent iPod, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically.
How many folders are listed under %AppData%\Apple Computer?
How many backups under Edit > Preferences > Devices?
This is how my three backups are represented by three folders:
Assuming there are two folders, but only one backup listed I would close iTunes, copy the entire Backup folder to another location for security, then rename the folders so that the dated folder replaces the current one. In the example above I would probably add -Bad to the second folder name, and then remove -20141204-010305 from the third. When you restart iTunes it should be possible to restore the data from your older backup set.

  • TimeCapsule archive feature - how do I access/restore files from archive?

I used to archive feature of the time capsule to back up the time capsule to another disk. Is there a way to restore from the archive with TimeMachine?  When I use the Browese Other Backup Disks option, I do not see the archive as an option.  Any ideas of how to proceed.  I have searched, but no luck finding a response addressing this so far.  Any help is much appreciated.  Thanks, mb

The archive will be a direct copy of the material on the TC.
So plug the USB drive into the computer, and mount the sparsebundle then you will see the backup under that and you should be able to then see it in Time Machine.
Exactly the same as you would do for a disk from the TC.

  • Hi, I had to re install my itunes library from a hard drive to my new laptop. Now I cant sync my iphone because itunes thinks all songs are new and basically doubling all albums. Should i restore iphone or is there a better way?

hi, i had to re install my itunes library from a hard drive to my new laptop. Now itunes thinks i am trying to add new albums and saying there isnt enoug space. should i restore or is there a better way.

Have you tried exporting a 10 second section of the footage to see if the issue shows up once the seqeunce is actually exported from the timeline. I edit on CS5 with windows 7 pro at work quite often and have no issues so I assure you that isn't the issue. I also edit with AVCHD footage when at home and work quite freqeuntly as well so I'm positive that isn't the issue. It sounds like a GPU driver has been corrupted in the way it interacts with premiere pro. What type of GPU do you have? If it supports MPE's GPU acceleration have you tried turning it off and seeing if that makes any difference?
Anyways though try to export a 10 second test section of your timeline to see if when the clip is exported from premiere it will play normally in windows media player or vlc or w/e media player you want to use. If it exports fine then you can almost be positive it's a corrupted video card driver. If that's the case I'd re-install your GPU's driver and also check your gpu makers website to see if they have a updated driver avaiable.

  • I have had to reset my iPod Classic 160gb but each time I connect to my itunes it keeps saying it is in recovery and should be restored. When I restore it, it just tells me I need to restore it again. Can anyone help?

I have a Sonos system with an ipod dock and was experiencing problems when using my ipod. The people at Sonos suggested resetting my ipod, so I did. Now, unfortunatey, my ipod isn't working properly. When I connected it to my itunes it said that it was in recovery mode and should be restored. I restored it and a message said it would appear in my itunes. But it just keeps saying that it needs to be restored. I've tried removing my itunes software and reloading it again but nothing changed.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

I've been going entirely on the almost universal statement that installing Lion does not install Java by default. I'm very aware of the fact that older versions of OS X actually rely on the use of Java for some system functions, but I've been told that is no longer the case. If that were so, then there is no need for any Java to be present, yet you say it is there and you aren't the only one who has told me that.
But exactly how much Java is installed by default? Obviously not enough to use it for browsing. In the days of the Java 6 Preferences app, it used to alert you that Java was not installed and offer to do so.  What happens with standalone apps like CrashPlan in Lion that require Java, do they have enough, by default, to run?
The only Java component missing in these OSs is the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Peruse those installations, looking in these directories, and be enlightened:
    /Applicatons/Utilities/->Java Preferences.app
    /Library/Java/
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/->JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
    /System/Library/CoreServices/->

    com.apple.java.InstallOnDemand.plist

    /System/Library/Java
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/->
            JavaApplicationLauncher.framework
            JavaLaunching.framework
to name a few, but probably not all the Java components installed with OS Xs. Then, stop saying Java's not installed, when only the JRE component is missing.
There has been speculation from some that perhaps it migrated from an older system or that Lion was installed on top of the older system. There's also some confusion these days about what actually constitutes a "clean install".
AFAICT, it's speculated wrongly. As for the clean install, I define it to occur when the user wipes the drive, installs the OS, sets up everything, and then installs all 3rd-party software. Then, the installation is clean. If there's any migration involved, then it's not clean. i've not done one for over ten years and my OSs started with 9.2->Jaguar->to the current three.

Visited sites are not appearing in History on my iPad1. Should I "Restore"??

Go to Settings>Safari>Private Browsing and see if you have that turned on. Turn it off if you do.
EDIT - I had never turned on private browsing and I just enabled it now. The browser turns a darker color so I assume that you would see that and know that private browsing is turned on.
Quit Safari and restart the iPad.
To close or quit Safari - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that doesn't work, try a reset of the iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
One final thought - are you sure that you are looking in the correct folder for your History? You may be in another folder that you created in the Bookmarks area of Safari.

is not as pure as Java, but it is an improvement over
C++ and it has a few things, like operator

Stop! Stop the tomatoes! Please!Ugghh, operator overloading. What a nasty nasty thing that was. Why change something you have been seeing since you were in diapers to mean something else. + should alwalys be plus because we have all grown up knowing that. Imagine if you had a child and for the fun of it you taught him growing up that his left hand was his right hand, think of all the confusion he would have when he is learning how to drive and his instructor tells him to take a left. Even though he may learn that what he believes is left is now right he will always first think of his left hand as his right.
