Should I seek a 3rd party for color/contrast?

I installed Mountain Lion a couple months ago.
Although there are a few feature I really like, Apple took away a lot of real basic stuff away for no apparent reason.
One change in Mountain Lion is the lack of color in icons (like in the Mail SideBar, and the in Finder SideBar).  They also took the contrast away (like in the Next/Previous buttons on Safari).
Sure, everybody has their opinion as to what they like and dislike.  Sometimes just preference.  But other times it's a matter of usability.  If you are older and/or your eyes are not as good as they once were, upgrading to Mountain Lion may make you feel like you've aged 10 years overnight.  The lack of Color and Contrast makes the OS harder to use for some.
There are some third-party tools/utilities that bring back some of the color and contrast found is older OS X version (e.g. Snow Leopard).
So my question is this.  Should I risk causing problems with my OS X by using these 3rd party utilities, or should I wait to see if Apple puts the color and contrast back into OS X?  Is Apple working on this, or are there too many more important issues to work on?

"and the Mac OS does not provide it"
Not strictly true; 10.6.8 and up have Quarantine with definitions for known trojans etc updated by Security Updates.

I want to send my G.B. song to a 3rd party for pro-mixing.
They need all the single tracks, but in a manner which is in perfect order as the song flows.
Is there a way? In wav files

    1. Solo each track? How?
click the headphone icon to solo a track
Will it end up in order?
there is no order, per se, you export each track one at a time
    2. Export ? It only says export to CD or send to itunes or iweb.
use send to iTunes, and after each export, rename the song in iTunes to whatever you want (likely the track number to make things easy for yourself later)
    3. without compression? Where is compression found?
sending to iTunes will send it uncompressed
    B.T.W. I am using G.B. 3.0.4 (104) Is this good?
GB4 might be better, but GB3 is fine.

  • Plug-in or 3rd party for Chroma keying with DV footage

We shoot Betacam SP, captured to DV with a DSR-45P DV/DVCAM deck.
From what I learn on the web, green is preferred if you edit on DV, due to the color sampling. (4:1:1 for PAL?).
However, it also depends on what background you have. Use green if you are in the forest, use blue if you are at the beach. Sort of.
The built-in chroma keying in FCP is OK, but not more than that. What do you recommend using?
I've found the dVMatte from www.dvgarage.com - is it good?

Just for DV media, the AdvantEdge plug-in from Ultimatte has a preset. It has a resampling method for 4:1:1 (or 4:2:0 if PAL) media like DV.

  • Why do I have to use a 3rd party for video calling...

I have downloaded the newest version of skype, and it says I am using BtvStack.exe for Skype. It will not allow me to make video calls from my desktop. How can I change this!? Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you are not using any Bluetooth devices with Skype, then you don't need this BtvStack.exe application at all.
In Skype open Tools -> Options -> Advanced settings. At the bottom of this screen you should see a menu item saying “Manage other programs access to Skype”. Click on this menu. Do you see any applications listed there?
If you see BtvStack.exe in the list, then remove this application.

  • 3rd party for archiving emails from MAIL 2

I am having problem with archiving email from Mail 2.
My mailbox is quite big (>3GB). It takes more time to open.
Do you know anyway to archive old emails to other location, then we just open old mails from that location?
I tried with Mail Scripts, unfortunately after archiving, I can't restore to original location.
    Thanks,

Yes, there really is only one piece of software to consider: the excellent MailSteward.
It's robust, flexible, well-priced, versatile, quick and extremely well supported. It'll allow you to set a variety of criteria against which to export emails, which they become fully visible, searchable and you can even reply to an archived message.
Attachments can be searched and emails re-imported back into Mail if you ever so need.
Really an outstanding piece of work! Good luck.

  • Falsely accused of installing 3rd party RAM into my macbook pro while just a month away from my warranty expiring

Hey, this is my first "post" here on Apple discussions.
Since i bought my Macbook pro in October 2011, my macbook has been given for servicing many times. We've always used the Authorised Service centre here in Singapore (QCD Technologies), and I can swear I have never taken my laptop to a third party. However, when I gave my laptop in for servicing yesterday because it wasn't booting up and instead beeped 3 times every time I tried to switch it on (suggesting faulty RAM), they told me that they can't work on the laptop until we talk to Apple because they claim that the RAM installed is not original (suggesting that we used a 3rd party for my macbook's repair). Needless to say we were extremely appalled because we have never consulted a 3rd party, and this makes it extremely clear to us that either QCD or Apple slipped up in their servicing/production without accounting for changing the RAM or are simply lying. If they don't have a log for it, then we know they made a mistake, however the problem is they can easily use this as an excuse to evade costs on their part.
Has anyone else experienced this? What should I do from here on?  I need my laptop for college quite urgently and It's very convenient that Apple is doing this just 1 month before my warranty after extending it, expires finally.

Have you taken the computer to the same repair place every time it was repaired? If so, suggest to them that they must have installed third party RAM. And, another fact to consider: Apple does not manufacture RAM - it always uses third party RAM. They do change suppliers, so different machines may have different brands of RAM. And, as mentioned: installing RAM does not void your warranty - you may want to point that out to the repair place as well. Although, to be fair, a senior Applecare rep once told me to reinstall the original RAM before sending in the machine for repair so no one could possibly blame the problems on third party RAM.
You can easily install RAM yourself; use one/both of the links provided by leroydouglas to purchase the correct RAM as three beeps at startup usually mean there is a problem with the RAM.

  • Do we still need a 3rd party firewall ?

Since AEBS comes with a build-in firewall, should we uninstall the 3rd party firewall ? And disable the firewall in OSX altogether ?
    Thanks

I've found that the new firewall in OS X Leopard is sufficient enough to protect my Macbook Pro while traveling. I have it set to "Set access to specific services and applications". When connected to the wireless SOHO I've also found the AEBS to have a very secure network firewall to protect the WLAN. Even when connected to the AEBS I still leave my Macbook Pro firewall enable so as to not forget when traveling to turn it back on. I haven't noticed any significant drop in network performance leaving it enabled while still connected to the WLAN via the AEBS. To test your firewall use free firewall test sites such as http://www.hackerwatch.org/probe/ Also if you want to encrypt your data then enable File Vault. For added security of your laptop data I'd suggest third party security tracking software such as LoJack or Undercover http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/
As for the IP address concern this is typical when visiting a website that the site you have specifically asked to visit will be able to see your IP address. You could try spoofing your address but it shouldn't be necessary and it may cause more problems when your surfing. Note: Just because the website you entered can see your IP address does not mean that your IP address is visible to a local hacker sniffing for open ports in your neighborhood. Both Leopard's firewall and the AEBS firewall allow you to set Stealth Mode so as to not broadcast your location and add an extra layer of protection making it more difficult for a hacker to crack your firewall.

  • LP9.1.1/10.6.3 -- 3rd party plug-ins question..

The last 4 nights on my new system have been stable---iMac i7/LP9.1.1/10.6.3
Now i'm missing my 3rd party plug-is which i have not installed yet.
    Stylus RMX
    Omnisphere
Maschine is in the mail and i may jump at the Komplete 6/Kore 2 bundle sale.
What should i expect with 3rd party plug-ins and Logic 9.1.1, am still in 32bit mode, but lots of horror stories about noise on first note, crashes etc.
I bought this system for film scoring kinda stuff, so internal logic instrumenst are not enough for me.
    Please advise.
    Thanks
    Faisal

I would suggest to make sure Logic is in 32bit mode when you first run it after installing your plug-in's. I had the darndest time trying to get my Komplete and Sample Tank's to show up- then it dawned on me that I was in 64-bit. Ran in 32-bit and the plug in manager found all the 3rd party stuff.
Once you have it installed (remember that a lot of plug-ins should be ran first in their standalone mode to authorize)- switch back to 64-bit and all should be good (for the most part).

  • 3rd Party RAID Card options - must make a decision

I've been on the Mac with NLE for high end corporate work since early 90's but only now moving from a 10 bit uncompressed SD edit suite to FCP and I need your valued feedback for a Mac Pro arriving soon. I've spent hours poring over all forums, Apple and otherwise, to select the right raid solution. The situation is that we will edit NTSC into 2009 and make the transition to HD later in the year. So, the initial set-up will be three 1 TB Seagate 7200.11's with a 320GB for O/S (and perhaps more in optical bay for scratch, etc.) I prefer to install the three video drives internally and go with a hardware driven card (Raid 5) that also provides support for external drives if we add later. Caldigit's is the only card that appears to cover all the misc. requirements but the forums list issues with 3rd party storage vs Caldigit's box. Other cards have pros and cons so I'm asking you to tell me what is working in your shop and also whether I should just purchase a 3rd party external enclosure and set up the Seagates there. If so, card recommendation is also critical.

    Hi,
I find installing a RAID 5 inside the Mac Pro has too many limitations. I would rather keep the boot drive in its own internal bay and be able to mount a boot camp disk or other backup disks internally when needed.
A better solution for most users is to mount the RAID 5 externally. The FirmTek SeriTek/5PM enclosure and the HighPoint RocketRAID 2314 combination provides a high quality external RAID 5 solution that is quiet, fast and dependable. You can learn more about it here:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/firmtek/5pm/
    http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-5pm/

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000NAXGIU/arizomacinusergr
There are other solutions that work well too. However, the controllers tend to be much more expensive. RAID 5 users looking for a quality solution at a very reasonable price will find the SeriTek/5PM and RR2314 combination works well.
If you don't mind paying more the Areca ARC-1680ix-12 SAS controller reviewed by AMUG is another high performance option that works well with SATA direct connect enclosures. You can read more about it here:

  • Using 3rd party binary in script that is run as job

    Hi all,
I have several scripts to do various tasks with IIS logs we receive from all our various web servers.  One script unzips logs, another logparses to grab a few fields then sftp to a 3rd party for analysis, another will encrypt the original zip files
in prep for ftp to 3rd party, another will ftp to that 3rd party, and yet another will analyse the logs with our in house analytiscs application.
I want to have a master script that will run these other scripts as jobs so that it will control when to start certain scripts based on the state of the jobs.  It all seemed to work great as I was setting up test jobs, until I added '3rd' party executables
like 7-zip, ftp.exe, winscp, etc...  The jobs would just go to failed state when they hit the executables.
That's not my current problem though as I found out that if I used the
-windowstyle hidden option for start-process then everything ran as expected, that is until I wanted to log output from the 3rd party app.  FTP for example.
    I tried this:
    $ftpexe = "C:\windows\System32\ftp.exe"
    $ftpscr="d:\scripts\ftpscrtmp.txt"
    "open 111.1.1.1`r`nSomeFTPuser`r`nSomepassword <..bunch of other ftp commands>" | Out-File -FilePath $ftpscr -Append -Encoding "ASCII"
start-process -wait -filepath $ftpexe -argumentlist $ftparglist  -RedirectStandardOutput $ftplog -windowstyle hidden
However, asking powershell to redirect output of a hidden window was probably like asking someone to cover their eyes and read a book and it let me know it.
I have tried without using -windowstyle hidden and not having any luck.  I want to capture the output of the ftp commands so that I can make sure the file was transferred successfully.  If I run the script without -windowstyle hidden and not as
a job it works, and I can test the output.  I really want to be able to run this script as a job AND get the output of the ftp to a file... advice?
    Thanks in advance!

This works with no problem for me.
    Start-Process -wait -filepath ftp.exe -argumentlist  '-s:c:\scripts\ftpcmd.txt' -RedirectStandardOutput c:\scripts\ftp.log
I get no window and the file gets written.
This is my ftp command file:
    open ftp.microsoft.com
    anonymous
    [email protected]
    ls
    bye

  • Seeburger Adapter: Party for AS2 - Synchronous MDN

Hello, I have to AS2 related questions:
    1. We send a message via sender proxy which then has to be sent to an AS2 receiver. According to the documentation that I have a Party has to be created for applying AS2 IDs.
I have created a party for the external AS2 receiver, but should I also configure a Party for the internal SAP system, that sends the message via proxy? We already have a business system with communication channel configured for the proxy sender, so I am wondering whether I have to set up an additional party and use a business service for the SAP system? Any advice on that_
    2. In between I also use an integration process, because apart from MDN we get two more AS2 messages used as acknowledgment that have to be correlated to the original message.
Now I am wondering how I can correlate a MDN in the integration process? I request the MDN synchronously however I doubt that I can use a synchronous interface as I have to set up a separate MDN sender even though the MDN is requested synchronously. Do you have any experience in dealing with such scenarios?
    Thank you very much.

No you don't need sender Party. But while creating the receiver Agreement overwrite the Sender Party with you company Identifier (so that receiver can identify teh source of the message)

Sorry never worked on this. But will MDN have any detail for you to correlate!!!!?

  • PY Outsourcing to 3rd Party

    Hi SAP Gurus,
We have a requirement to process Gross Payrun for our UK client and send the payroll outsourcing file to the 3rd party.  Would like to know if it is possible to send the PY data as IDOC to the 3rd party for UK.
    Thanks

I also have the same question?
can we use SAP XI for the interface? how about IDOCs? what difference does it make to the implementation?

  • Migration of EmbeddedLDAP to 3rd Party LDAP

    Hi,
Is it possible to migrate the complete authentication process of EmbeddedLDAP
used by Weblogic 8.1 to any 3rd Party LDAP system ? Even the system user (default
user : weblogic created during the domain setup) authentication should happen
on a 3rd Party LDAP system. EmbeddedLDAP can at the most act as a bridge between
Weblogic 8.1 and 3rd Party LDAP system. Is there any solution to this problem?

    Mandar

I do not believe there are any restrictions on removing the default authenticator.
When you boot the server make sure the user/pass is valid in the 3rd party LDAP
and they have the proper admin/oper privileges to boot the server.
You might want to configure the server with two authenticators first to verify
you can successfully authenticate to the 3rd party LDAP before removing the default
    authenticator.
