Should I set up my mac air or time capsule first?  Both seem to need each other

I got a mac air and time capsule.  Which sould I set up first.  I have tried setting up both but I seem to get stuck as both need to be set to to work together (of course).  Any suggestions?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Set up first the MacBook Air. When you have set up the MacBook Air, turn on the Time Capsule and open AirPort Utility to set up your Time Capsule

Hi.. I'm new to mac, I've got a mac book air and time capsule is it possible to save music, video from iTunes Store directly to time capsule leaving my 128GB Mac free? If so  please help..

You can move your iTunes library.. Apple have explicit instructions to do it. If the library is moved to the TC and accessed over wireless, the efficiency of the whole system will drop dramatically..
A file you download goes.. Modem---TC--Laptop--Back to TC--Store on disk. Double looping the wireless slows it dramatically..
As far as using TC for your iTunes.. you CAN.. but SHOULD YOU?
    Store files on the TC.

This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.

My mac air says hard drive full and 90% is full of 'other' which I cant work out what 'other' is as i Have transferred most to my external hard drive.
Do you know how I can tell how large each file is taking up and what my 'other' category could be?
    thanks

Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
    - Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
      Empty the Trash.
    - Start iPhoto.
      Empty its trash.
      Restart.
    Backup:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions.  You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second if you plan to offload some files.  (See suggestions for where to purchase hard drives at the end of this message.)

    Deleting files:
Then use the free application OmniDiskSweeper http://www.omnigroup.com/more to explore your volume in descending order by size so you can attack the problem from the top down, deleting the largest unwanted files first.  Delete with caution and do not delete any system files.  Remember to empty the trash after trashing the files.
Additional reference on freeing disk space:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html
    Offloading files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk.  Use ODS again to find them.  This will be at least your second hard drive.  Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s).  Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled).  Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then  > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.

  • ADVANCED: Is manually editing a SparseBundle partition the best approach for backing up 2 Macs to 1 Time Capsule?

Problem/Question: I want to back up 2 macs to 1 Time Capsule, AND provide each of them with an equal amount of space.
    Issues:
    — to ensure one doesnt "out backup the other" - AND since it isnt possible (practically) to Partition the HDD within the Time Capsule
or in other words: to prevent 1 computer from taking more space for itself by providing an equal amount of backup space to each computer)
*Without manually removing the HDD inside the Time Capsule, docking it and partitioning it in DiskUtility and then remounting it into the Time Capsule...
I understand that it is possible to restrict the size of the SparseBundles, so in theory, one could make at 2TB Time Capsule have a 1TB a sparsebundle for EACH computer, and thus would leave each computer with a maxium 1TB each of backup space.
Following Pondini's instuctions for SparseBundle editing here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/A8.html
Is this reccomendable? Any issues I would encounter? or other suggestions for how to proceed?
    Thanks
    —James
PS - Manditory complaining moment: Why can't Apple just enable a Partioning option in AirPort Utility so we dont have to worry about this?!

The disk space is not adequate for the operation.. archive off the existing backup if you need it.. then start a new backup from each computer.. once you have a new clean backup then set one to 1TB (remember a 2TB only formats to 1.8TB though, so you really should set one sparsebundle to 800GB.. and leave the other one to fill the remaining space.. the disk must have 10-25% free space remaining for backups to work.
    Note what Pondini says..
It may not "stick" on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and 10.6.4, and on some occasions, Mountain Lion.
This is not a 100% solution.. Even on ML it did not work reliably.. and if that is the case you can almost predict Mavericks will be worse... before it gets better.
James died before Mavericks came out so unfortunately we have no more information.. but Mavericks and how it handles sparsebundles could well be different.

  • Can we share our photos in the family on different mac´s with Time Capsule?

Can we share our photos in the family on different mac´s with Time Capsule?

It depends on the size and number of photos you are sharing around.
Nothing wrong with putting a copy of the photos on the TC if that works for you. Each person can access the photo just fine like that.
I am not saying don't.. just beware of the risks so do it prudently..
But if the library is too large, you will steal space on the TC that should be used for backups.. if all the computers in the network are backing up to it, don't use too much of the spare space.
Better to buy a firewire drive (or USB but firewire 800 are much faster) and connect it to a computer that is regularly turned on. Share that drive to the network. It will then also be backed up correctly to the TC although again be careful of the amount of files, and still keep a straight copy backup somewhere else.
I am recent convert so workflow on the Mac is not my forte.. so perhaps some of the wiser heads can also drop in and post a reply.

  • New Air Port Time Capsule Not Working With Old Airport Express

I have been running a home network comprised of a Air Port Time Capsule (A1254) and 5 ea Air Port Express (A1264) for several years with no problem.
The Air Port Time Capsule (A1254) died and I replaced it with an Air Port Time (A1470). Now none of the Air Port Express (A1264) work, all flashing yellow. All other network functions seem to work okay, Time Capsule Backup, Apple TV, Internet …
I am using AirPortUtility 6.3.1 for setup but do not see any way to setup the Air Port Express.

Reset the Express to factory and start over.. they should work.. are you using all 5 in extend wireless mode?
When you reset the Express click on the wifi icon in the top menu area.. and the newly reset AEx will appear in the list.. click it and Airport utility will open and attempt to automagically connect it to the TC.

  • How do i move my tv shows, movies and books from my mac to my time capsule to free up space on my mac?

how do i move my tv shows, movies and books from my mac to my time capsule to free up space on my mac?

Probably the easiest way is to drag the files from the iTunes window to the external drive.  Make sure they have copied.  Delete them from iTunes.  Hold down the option key and drag the copied files back to iTunes.  This will add them back but mapped to their new location and the option/alt key will stop the files from being copied to your Media folder on the internal drive.
In future if you are adding a batch of files in one go you can set preferences temporarily to store media on the external drive, then change back again.  See also:  iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507

How I can set up the DynDns inside the Time capsule, or only with the Time capsule I have external access from a PC for ex.?

MobileMe service is finished.. to get remote access to the Mac or TC you use iCloud account.. but that is for files.. not to access web cams.
Without dyndns client in the TC, you can perhaps run dyndns on the computer or video recorder..many of these will have clients built into them.
Even better get a static Public IP from your ISP.. that is the correct professional way to do it.
Or you can use whatever broadband modem you have and remove the TC as the main router.. simply bridge it. Use your adsl router for connection. Almost all adsl have built in dyndns.
Sorry your language is very hard to follow.. and I am sure you are finding my answers similarly difficult.
Basically the TC is about the hardest device to setup because it is lacking important networking functions.
Get a vpn router and use vpn connection is far superior to any other method. But you cannot do it with TC.

  • When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other?

When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other? In the Migration tool, I was only given the option of choosing the computer when it appeared on the same network, and didn't see an option to connect them to each other. Even though they're both connected to the same network with a wired connection, the migration is painfully slow.

Yes. The following quotation is from About Windows Migration Assistant
These are the preferred network connections, in order:
Use a CAT6-certified Ethernet cable that is in good condition to connect the Ethernet port of the PC directly to the Ethernet port of the Mac or Ethernet adaptor (USB or Thunderbolt). You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
Use CAT6-certified Ethernet cables that are in good condition to connect the Mac and PC to your home network router/hub/switch. You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
For wireless, use the fastest wireless signal possible (802.11n 5Ghz). Try to have the PC, Mac, and the wireless access point all in the same room close to each other.

  • How to change mac address on time capsule

    Hi there,
How to change mac address on time capsule?

There are routers that allow you to create/clone a mac address to whatever you like. Since many companies use the mac address to 'register' a unit connected to it's system, you usually just have to let them know you've changed your router and they will reset your system to accept connections from the new device.

  • HT1178 Air port time capsule

Does the Air port time capsule have to be permanently connected to the WAN input to provide a wireless network ? I have a wireless network in my house and where I want to keep my Air Port Time Capsual i have no WAN conectoin anywhere close!

I am trying to interpret your question.
I have a wireless network in my house and where I want to keep my Air Port Time Capsual i have no WAN conectoin anywhere close!
What you really mean is ethernet connection?? A LAN connection?
You would never connect the TC to WAN.. unless you mean to replace your main router.. !!
If you are happy using the TC as the main router or even as a bridge router and just continue to use your current wireless network, you would plug it into the main router whereever that is located. It doesn't matter where.
The TC can join a wireless network.. but it is seriously poor..
Here is how.. look at the screenshots here.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5719954?tstart=0
It is super slow.. it will cause the TC to become a dumb client on the network.. it will no longer have ethernet ports.. or a WAP.. just don't.

  • Air Port Time Capsule, Sonos Play 1, iTunes, Apple TV

    Hi,
I'm looking at purchasing an Air Port Time Capsule 2TB and a Sonos Play 1. I'd like to run all my iTunes from the APTC to the Sonos Play 1 and the films onto my Apple TV. I'd like to do this without having to turn on my macbook pro.
My macbook pro only has a 500gb harddrive and is maxed out for space. Being able to do this would save having to turn on my laptop just to listen to music or watch a film.
Will this be possible or does anybody else have any ideas?
    Help would be appreciated
    Carl

Sonos may be able to play the music but you cannot stream the movie without itunes running. The TC is NOT a media player.. it is a dumb store for files.
With iTunes you have no choice but to run a computer.. but the iTunes can be stored on the TC if you must..
A large USB drive plugged into your laptop is faster, more reliable and can be backed up by Time Machine.. A TC cannot be backed up by Time Machine, it is slow and will have issues with the library and running iTunes.
It can be pressed into duty.. but will never shine.
