Should I sleep HD and monitor?

I have a program that will shut down if the computer goes to sleep.  My energy settings are:
Turn display off after 1hr
- Prevent computer from sleeping auto when the display is off (I'm not sure this makes any since if I have the monitor turning off after 1hr?)
- Put hard disks to sleep when possible
- Wake for network access
- Enable Power Nap
At night, I lock the screen so the monitor isn't affected right (same as sleep)?
I have an SD HD.  Is there any reason to put the HD to sleep?
I'm trying to figure out if I need to put anything to sleep so the program above will remain open.  I can always set the screensaver (for when I'm gone).

Hi thanks for your reply but can you be more specific .. I am new with apple thing
Is it okay if I often shutdown the Mbp (2 or 3 times a day) ?.. I travel a lot

  • No screensaver and monitor sleep mode

    Hello guys,
I have the following problem with my Mac Pro (Early 08) and MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz. Both are Mac OS X 10.5.4.
I have installed the latest Security Update 2008-005. After installation both computers have similar problem with Screensaver and display sleep mode. Both simple don't start. I mean that my laptop and desktop computer don't start screensaver and after some time they don't turn off attached monitor (respectively built-in display).
I also tried to change time of both things (screensaver time and "monitor sleeping mode" time) to different time. I also restarted both computers few times already.
My laptop seems working after these "changes and restarts", but Mac Pro doesn't. Monitor is always on.
Please, do you have any info regarding this? I am quite possitive it was caused by mentioned security update, since before that update, both worked perfectly.
    Thank you for any help.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your monitor and screensaver work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.4 Combo Update . This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
    Let us know.

The button on my Ipod Touch (the big one just below the screen) will not work when I press it. Nothing happens, when before it would wake my IPod out of sleep mode, and exit out of programs I was using (ex. ITunes or Safari to main screen) . Now, no reactions. When I press the button, it appears to be more indented then it was before. What should I do? Do I need to get it fixed or replaced, or is this a problem I can fix on my own? Whatever it is, I really need some advice. Thanks in advance.

  • [SOLVED] systemd-udevd using 100% CPU and monitors go to sleep on boot

    Hi,
Turned my PC on this morning to find an issue with the monitors going to sleep immediately after booting. The boot process is usually slim autologin to a cinnamon session. I can see as far as entering my LUKS passphrase, followed by a few additional lines, followed by blank monitors and monitors entering power saving mode.
Booting with nomodeset on the kernel command line allows me to boot to a terminal and I can login etc, but obviously X doesn't start. I'm using xf86-video-ati drivers.
When booting with KMS enabled I also have a runaway systemd-udevd process which is thrashing my processor and I'm unable to kill it (I've tried kill -9 and still it persists).
The PC was working fine when I shut it down last night. No updates have been performed since, and no configuration changes have been made. I did notice that the power management dialog in the settings failed to open though.
Any suggestions would be welcome please, as I've now lost half a day trying to get this resolved.
    TIA
    X.
Edit: I've also tried downgrading xserver to 1.15, xf86-video-ati and the associated dependencies with no change.
Edit2: I've also disabled slim and rebooted and the same thing happens - so I don't believe it's an issue with X but with KMS.
Edit3: Booting with acpi=off on the kernel command line also fails with the same result.

Turned out to be an issue with libdrm. Apparently I had run some updates yesterday before shutting down, but they didn't appear in pacman.log; instead I found them by looking in the pacman package cache and found:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 110072 Jul 29 22:59 lib32-libdrm-2.4.56-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 160996 Jul 29 22:55 libdrm-2.4.56-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
Downgraded [lib32-]libdrm packages to 2.4.54-1, rebooted, and success.

I have read your post on how your monitor goes into sleep mode and will not wake up, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To rule out any sleep mode issues with the monitor, I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
Step 6. Try a different cable connecting your monitor to your computer
If the above steps did not resolve your issue you can try the monitor on a computer or other device to see if the issue persists. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

  • MBPro and monitor not staying asleep; new problem

Suddenly my new MBPro and its 24" monitor won't stay asleep!.
I ordinarily use the 24" monitor, leaving lid on my MBPro shut.
At night, I choose 'sleep" from the Apple menu and the mac and monitor sleep.
Suddenly, past couple of days, when I do this,
-monitor sleeps and then within seconds it pops awake
-If I raise the lid of my MBPro, the monitor of the laptop is black, does not come up until I use Software preferences to "detect display"
-only way I can keep both monitor and mac asleep is if I leave the lid of my MBPro up, then choose sleep, then the mac and monitor rest.
I suspect one of the recent sofware updates may be doing this.
    Anyone else experiencing this?
Should I reset the PMU on the monitor?
(Does anyone know the precise steps todo this; I know about removing the battery and holding power key for 5 seconds but have been given different advice on removing power cord or not)

I've got a very the similar problem. Brand new iMac 24" that shipped with Leopard -- my first Mac after jumping ship fom the Windoze side.
I had iTunes updating it's album artwork and since it was taking a while, I went to bed. When I turned out my light, I realized the screen had not yet gone to sleep (a good 15 minutes after it should have). So I set up a Hot Corner to put the display to sleep. When I put the mouse there, the monitor would go to sleep, but wake up within 10 seconds. At first I thought it was just the mouse moving as I walked away, but it wasn't.
I ended up turning the computer off because the big beautiful screen was throwing too much light. Since, I rarely turn my computers off and they're usually doing SOMETHING, this is really annoying.
Admittedly, I haven't tried some othe the potential solutions above, but this has to be the same bug. Screen saver stays on, monitor comes out of sleep.
    Any help would be.....well.....helpful.

  • IPod Touch 4th Gen. iOS 5.1.1 - Sleep Mode and Other Questions

    Hello,
I have an iPod Touch 4th generation with iOS 5.1.1
    1) RE: Sleep Mode - I found this on another thread and it's regarding iOS 4.3.1.
Is the same still true for iOS 5.1.1?
If so, what is recommended for sleep mode - Airplane mode or Wi-Fi off - or is either one ok?
Wi-Fi is always ON with the 4th generation model running 4.3.1 when it is sleeping unless you either turn off the Wi-Fi or turn Airplane mode ON.
    2)  I only use my iPod Touch on my home Wi-Fi and do not use any cloud based syncing or iTunes Wi-Fi Sync.  I do all my syncing manually from my MacBook Pro via USB to the iPod Touch.  The way I do things is purchase what I need from my MacBook Pro via iTunes and then manually sync it to the iPod Touch.  But there may be times, in the future, where I would want to purchase directly from the iPod Touch.
I recently updated my AppleID with my new email address via my MacBook Pro.  But, I noticed that on my iPod Touch under "Settings" "Store" that it still shows my old AppleID.  I have all Automatic Downloads set to OFF.  How do I update the iPod Touch to reflect my new AppleID?
    3) When I'm using Safari and I navigate to several websites, how do I easily get back to my home page (which is set to Yahoo!)?
Probably a dumb question but I can't seem to figure it out.  I've set Yahoo! to my homepage but I would think there should be or is (and can't find it) a button/icon like on my MacBook Pro Safari to take me directly back to the homepage.
Thanks in advance for the help!

    - Unless you use bluetooth, airplane mode and wifi off are the same as regards to battery drain. I like use airplane mode sinc that is directly under Settings.
    - Go to Settngs>Store and sign out of existing account and sign in with the updated one
    - I have no idea for the Safari question

  • My ipod touch is frozen on a screen with the ipod logo and the usb charger cable...i cannot get rid of it...i let the battery die...i held the sleep button and the power buttons..anyone have any ideas?

my ipod touch is frozen... the screen has a picture of the itunes logo and a usb charger. I have held the sleep button and the power button to reset and i have let the battery die and started to recharge...niether worked. any ideas???

Try charing it to 50% at least.
If all else fails, try putting it in DFU mode. Connect it to iTunes, (iTunes may not detect the device, but that's ok) hold the power and home buttons down for 10 seconds, then release the power button but keep holding the home button until it goes into DFU mode. iTunes should detect it and ask for a restore.

  • Transporting MBP: Sleep, Hibernation and dangers to hard disk

I used to transport my MBP by closing the lid and putting it in my backpack. Recently, however, it started to overheat when I do that. At first I thought it was some bug, maybe it hadn't gone to sleep properly. But then it happened again. I started to manually putting it to sleep before closing the lid, but no luck. It happened again. It happened 3 or 4 times in about 2 months and then the computer stopped working properly and I had to take it to professionals. They said I should NEVER put it in my backpack in sleep mode. Maybe if it's a 5min trip only, but not otherwise. They said the hard disk is not completely shut off in this mode and so carrying it around in movement may damage it. They checked my computer and said that indeed it was a hard disk problem, and that now that it was changed it's working fine. They said I should always shut it down before transporting it, which is a pain. (I live in Rio and it's above 30ºC most of the year, maybe that contributes to these heating problems, don't know…)
What annoys me is that I haven't found any official statement about it by Apple. I know people who never turn it off and even I did it without any problem for years with my previous MBP (well, in fact it died one day out of the blue and I have no clue why). Actually I can only assume based on discussions that the computer actually goes to sleep mode when I shut the lid, and I can only speculate about what this actually means because I haven't found any official information regarding it. I found that there's a mode called "hibernationmode 25" which is supposed to be essencially the same as shutting down the computer and saving the current RAM data to the hard disk. But I haven't found any official statement confirming this. I don't know if it really is as safe to carry it shut down as in this mode. Does anybody know where I can find official information about this? Or if there's any reliable way to contact Apple itself and actually get a reply?
    Thanks!

The Expert, Professional, you spoke to has NO clue. When any computer is put to Sleep, irrespective of what OS is installed (OS X or Windows) and what version of that OS, the only part that is supposed to be kept alive is the RAM and even that will go to sleep and dump it's contents onto the hard drive after an extended period of time if the system also has the hibernation mode set to do so. It then goes into a Deep Sleep state basically turning off completely.
I suspect what you are seeing it the system is trying to go from standard sleep mode to the Deep Sleep Hibernate mode and when that happens it must partially wake up to write the RAM data to the hard drive. At that point your system is not going back into either sleep mode or the Deep Sleep mode and that is when it heats up.
There are also many reports of Mac's of all ages crashing when trying to wake up from sleep and most of the time this is after it has gone into the Deep Sleep state and when you try to wake it the system doesn't or can't put back into the RAM the data that was written to the hard drive causing the system to hang and force a hard shutdown and restart.
I personally solve that problem by turning off the Hibernate system and deleting the Sleep Image file that is used to store the RAM data. So my MBP never going into that Deep Sleep state and I have never had a problem waking it whether after a few minutes or a day or so of being asleep. And it has never woken up on its own in my computer bag.
But to answer your question, statement from that Professional, the hard drive turns off completely when the system is put to sleep.
