Should I update iPhone 5s from iOS 7.1.2 to 8.1?

I have been holding off on updating my iPhone 5s which is currently running iOS 7.1.2. Now that 8.1 has been released, should I update?
I have seen recommendations for those to update from earlier versions of iOS 8 but couldn't find anything for those who are still on iOS 7.

My daughter has bought a 3gs which is currently running 4.1. Can it be updated any further and how would she do this? when the phone is plugged into iTunes and we click the update button is just says iTunes is running the latest version and doesn't update the phone.

Trying to update iphone 4 from ios 4 to ios 6! whys it saying its going to take so long?

so im trying to update from ios4 to the latest software update. the phone used to be my dads but now he gave it to me so i reset the entire phone so there's nothing in it at all. like brand new. i know you cant do it on the air so im doing it through itunes. i clicked on the option that said download and update so it happens straight away however it says "iphone software update (17hours remaining)" and its been going on for previously at least an hour. this is ridiculous. is it meant to take that long because im updating from ios4 to ios 6 and missed out ios5?

just like to correct: im on iOS 4.3.1
also additional info:
- secondly i have restarted my phone and restarted itunes many times & i have the latest version of itunes
- restarted everything again. i synced my phone for the fun of syncing hoping that might help although i didnt have anything to sync but anyway now its reduced the time & said "8hours remaining" but in the space of 10minutes went up to "11hours remaining" seriously? please help .

sync'd the phone on itunes after itunes updated
commenced 5.0.1 update
but after 1.5 hours there was no progress
diconnected from itunes
did soft reset
then was asked to restore iphone which it is doing now several hours later
is this a common problem?
what should i do?

it finally finished the restore after a long time, now I'm restoring from backup
perhaps ill finally have my phone back

Before I start, yes, I do have the latest version of itunes installed to my pc. I plug in my iphone, select it and click check for an update and a small window comes by and says: This version of iphone software (4.2.1.) is the current version. My friends have iphone 3g and they updated to ios 6 with no problem... I´m really desperate because I´ve been trying to solve this problem for months, please help

It's already running the newest iOS version it can; while an iPhone 3G can't be updated to iOS 6, the iPhone 3GS can.

On opening the app "Find my iPhone" I add my password and sign in, to be greeted with a screen that says;
"Update Find My iPhone. A new version of Find My iPhone is available from the App. Store. You must install the update to continue using the app. Update now"
On hitting the "Update now" button I'm taken to the relevant page on the App Store, to be told that I cannot update as it needs IOS8 to be able to continue and as my iPhone is only a 4 cannot install IOS8.
I'm left going around in circles. The only thing would be to delete the app, but looks like I could not re-install the version I would need. Any body have any thoughts or suggestions? (Apart from updating my phone, I have a few months left on the contract!)

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I have tried as you suggested, and when opening the "purchased" apps some have the icloud logo next to them, but I only have "OPEN" against "Find My iPhone". When opening it up, it goes through the same routine; needs to be updated before proceeding, and wouldn't update because I don't have IOS8.
Anything else I could try, or am I doomed!

When I try to do this using iTunes on my MacBook Pro (OS X v 10.5.8), with my iPhone in its cradle, clicking the "Update" button in Tunes gets a message saying "This version of iTunes (10.6.1) is the current version." I can't get the iOS update to download.
When I try to update to the iPhone directly, I get a message saying "iOS 6.0.1 failed verification because you are no longer connected to the Internet" at the Verifying Update step. I noticed that this message refers to iOS 6.0.1, even though I want to update to 6.1. It is possible that, a few weeks ago, I may have downloaded but not installed v 6.0.1.

I tried powering down and re-starting the iPhone (as suggested at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275). This seems to have cleared the "...not connected to the Internet" problem, and iOS 6.1 is now in the process of downloading.
