Should I update my WRT54GS firmware?

I have a WRT54GS V1.1 router. I haven't updated the firmware since I bought the router in December, 2004. It is currently at version 3.37.2 of the firmware. The latest version is 4.71.1.
Should I risk a download?
I'm trying to get my daughter's new notebook to work off the router. We haven't tried everything, but I'm wondering if I need to update the firmware. It always seems that updating or upgrading software causes more problems than it solves.

If you are not having problems with that yet, don't... it's like a last resort thing...

  • Should I update my SMC firmware?

I use YES method to keep my both cores runing in its full speed over 7 seven minutes and returned no any random shutdown. Should I keep updating my SMC firmware?
My Macos is 10.4.6 and SMC is 1.4f8. I didn't have any update since this July.

Holding CPU at full load for 7 min without a problem does NOT justify that you don't need the updates. RSD usually takes time to develop. Despite of all the application updates, 10.4.8 and SMC firmware 1.4f12 are the two things you must have. They will make ur macbook run cooler by changing the fan behavior so you won't be pushing the limit of ur macbook as much as before.
Don't hesitate. I know some people think getting updates might not be a good idea after reading so many posts here. But keep in mind that this is a forum for us to report problems. The guys who never had a problem with their macbooks (which i tink is the majority) may never post here. Updates are not supposed to cause any problem, otherwise they wouldn't be released officially, don't ya think? If you did run into problems after update, it's ur macbook that is wrong, not the updates. It'll be better off that you just reinstall the whole OSx and get all the updates to obtain a clean system.

  • Should I update Intel MEI Firmware or not?

You know, there is this little chip on every last-gen laptop's motherboard (apple macbooks either) called Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI), and it has its own firmware that is upgradable. I'm currently running Windows 8.1 via Bootcamp on my MacBook Pro 13 (Late 2013 Retina, Haswell based), and it has the Intel MEI Firmware verion 9.5.3.1526, you can check it yourself using Intel MEInfo Tool (detailed info here):
The question is, can I update this firmware with the newer one that is available (version 9.5.41.1904) here? Is it safe or not? Anyone tried?

The benefits are the same as with BIOS\EFI update like bugfixes, improvements, etc. Probably, this new firmware resolves the known 30% CPU Idle issue, I don't know, but I want to try.
You may want to create a system restore point before you update, so you can roll back easily.
    Zhyrnov wrote:
Apple boards are nothing but the same Intel boards with Intel chips and logics using some kind of custom design, so I think it is not so much Apple-related thing.
Apple has written a lot of their own firmware, the latest example is the iMac 5K with ATI cards, which have issues with WHQL drivers. GPU drivers are also similar. Another example is the absence of WiDi on Intel hardware, since Apple has their own AirPlay. It is worth a test, if you keep careful backups of Windows and the OSX to be prepared for disaster.

  • WRT54GS firmware update

    Hi
I just updated my WRT54GS v2.1 from firmware v4.50.6 to v4.71.4 (yes, I'm not what they call the most careful network admin in my house), and I noticed 2 slight changes, I'd like you to confirm:
    1) On Setup tab, Basic setup page, I remember from previous version what was specified on Router name would be shown on "Connect to 192.168.1.1" login window, e.g. "The server 192.168.1.1 in ROUTERNAME requires a user name and password". After firmware update , it shows WRT54GS, ignoring what's I specified in Router name field. Is it same to you?
    2) On Status tab, Router page, it says "Current time: Not available". Help says "This shows the time, as you set on the Setup Tab". Setup tab only shows time zone setup though... I don't recall if it was available there in previous firmware version, but where is the clock adjust function?
    Thank you!

After upgrading the firmware on the router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure it. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
On the setup tab, you will find the Time settings.

  • When should I expect to see firmware update 1.1.1???

when should I expect to see firmware update 1.1.1???

It seems unlikely that they would phase it out on their own; see the recent European rollouts announced. I agree that it may go the way of the Newton, but that only based on Apple not updating the phone, fixing/patching. The Newton was an amazing device, it just never worked quite right. I had one. The iPhone is the same...sadly I have one of those too. I truley hope Apple continues to invest in the iPhone and evolve it into the phone some designer envisioned day one.

  • PS3 Game Update Stops (WRT54G)

Hey, I have been playing ps3 online for over a year now and had a different router in my old house.  We just got charter set up in our new house today and have a linksys (WRT54G) router.  I'm trying to update a new game's version but it gets to 10%-20% and just stops due to the wireless cutting out.  Sometimes it randomly signs me out to, but I was playing COD earlier and it worked fine.  Any ideas why I can play games fine, but the update stalls over and over?  Thanks!!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

To resolve this you should Upgrade your router's firmware...
    Download the Firmware from here
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
Also make sure that your computer is set to obtain IP automatically, disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer before trying to access the setup page...
If your Internet Service Providor is Cable follow this link
If your Internet Service Providor is DSL follow this link
Also on the router's Security tab uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings...
Under the Administration tab disable UPnP, under the set up tab change the MTU size to 1452...

  • WRT54G firmware question

I have a WRT54G v.2 router that has been working great for close to a year now. I've never updated the firmware and see  that there have been a couple of upgrades since I put it into service. If I choose to update do I need to do so progressively by downloading and installing each of the updates or can I just download the latest and call it good.
Updating the firmware hasn't crossed my mind because the router has work well, but I have a distant weak area in the house and am considering a WRE54G extender and am not sure that I need the lastest firmware for my router before I make that move. Thanks.

If you are running a Firmware earlier to fw : 4.00.2, then you should Upgrade your router's firmware as WRE54G won't work with an older firmware...
Download Firmware 2.95 MB (fw version : 4.21.1)...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device: -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave the username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...

  • Do I need to install  Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (Intel) and firmware

    Hiya,
I recently bought a new Macbook Pro,it is Mac OS X version 10.4.8, i am just wondering whether I need to install Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (Intel)?
I also tried to install MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.2, however it says the computer doesn't need to install it. And I checked my Boot ROM Version is MBP22.00A5.B00. After the update it should be: MBP11.0055.B08 (MacBook Pro 15 inch). So I don't know what to do?
    please help!
    Thanks.
    Catherine

"Do I need to install Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (Intel) and firmware"
You don't "need" to install anything. If you think you can benefit from the updates then go ahead.
"i am just wondering whether I need to install Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (Intel)? "
If it came with 10.4.8 preinstalled, then you do not need to install it.
"So I don't know what to do?"
Nothing. If it says the update isn't needed, then it's already been applied at the factory.

  • Should I update from SD23 to SD28 - Momentus XT

I realize there are numerous discussions regarding firmware updates and the Seagate Momentus XT but fearing my question would get lost among the others..I'm starting a new discussion on it here.  If it needs to be moved please do so but at least it will have the opportunity to be answered.
I am currently running the following:
    MacBook Pro 13" i3 2.3ghz with OS X 10.7.2 Lion
    Momentus XT 500gb with firmware - SD23
    Model:  ST95005620AS
    I've been running this______________^ since March 2011.
My question is simple.  Should I update the firmware to SD28?
The reason I'm so far behind is because I didn't realize there were updates.
    Thank you in advance,
    Phil

    Talked to Seagate representative:
He addressed my question without any problem and directed me to the following link which identifies whether or not your hard drive has an update available.
    http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931&NewLan g=en
There is a link within this webpage that checks your drive by model # and** serial #.  To those wishing to upgrade the firmware..check first.

  • Whats wrong with the servers i cant download update 5.1 firmware

whats wrong with the servers i cant download update 5.1 firmware ive been trying for 2 days it says i dont have permission to access the requested source

What says you don't have permission to access the requested source? That is not an error that should come up at all either from iTunes or when attempting an over the air upgrade. At least not an error that has anything to do with the servers.
It could be a permissions problem on your computer or an issue being caused by your firewall or antivirus software.

  • WRT54G firmware Mac DHCP conflict

I updated my WRT54G version 6 to firmware version 1.01.0 and (after 2 days when things worked fine) lost the ability for any of my 3 Mac computers (intel iMac and pismo powerbook) to get an IP address either by wired connection or wireless connection to the router. My Windows laptop connected just fine by wired and wireless connections. The Macs could see the router if manually set to IP 192.168.1.50, but did not get an IP address if set to DHCP. No amount of resetting router, modem and computers helped. I reflashed 1.01.0 using the PC but that did not help. I flashed back to firmware 1.00.9 and immediately got back wired and wireless connections with all of the Macs. There are at least three other reports of people solving exactly the same problem posted in the Apple discussion boards with other Mac models.

  • Should one update Embedded Controller program before a BIOS update ?

    Hello All,
I have an IBM Thinkpad 600E 2645 4AU that has an old version of BIOS that am trying to update to the latest.
I read on the net that before updating the BIOS its required to update the Embedded Controller program.
This is what I read and am quoting :
" It is also important to understand that Thinkpads from IBM have two separate firmwares: the BIOS, and the Embedded Controller program. A given BIOS version will require a certain version of the Embedded Controller program. The IBM documentation is sometimes unclear about the order in which these two firmwares should be updated. On most, but not all Thinkpads, the correct update order is Embedded Controller program first, and then the BIOS. Make sure to do the two updates immediately one after the other. Newer models from Lenovo update both the Embedded Controller program and the BIOS at the same time, so you don't have to worry about it."
Could anyone let me know if this applies ? I searched the Lenovo site for a  Embedded Controller program for my laptop model but found none. So wondering if this model would require the Embedded Controller program update ?
    Thanks.
    Alex

    OK, I've fixed this now.
I had Kaspersky Internet Security installed and had disabled it manually but it was obvisouly still blocking fundamental system changes like these.  I uninstalled KIS completely and then ran these updates again and all worked fine.
