Should i upgrade my iPhone 4 from 5.1.1 to 6.1.2?

I haven't upgraded my Iphone 4 in a while because I heard that the OS upgrade would significantly reduce performance. now that there have been many new versions, should I upgrade to the latest OS 6.1.2??
what's the good, the bad, and the ugly of it?
Thanks!

I appreciate your response. Thanks. I ask because I had heard way back, when the 4S first came out, "don't upgrade the OS unless you want to screw up your phone" -- this was even implied to me by an Apple store employee, along with several friends in addition to what i heard through the grapevine.
I suspect by now, perhaps these issues have been resolved? do you yourself, or know someone, who has an iPhone 4 (not 4S) who has upgraded the OS without major problems??
sincerely, thank you for your advice.

SSince Apple does not support downgrading the iOS I suggest you start a new question that gives a good title to a specific problem. Then in the body of the thread describe the problem in detail, tell us what steps you have tried so far to correct the problem, what happened, and what error messages you received.

there should be a back up on your friends computer of your phone when it was restored. If there is all you need to do is restore from that backup and your good to go, I just hope that you did not plug your phone into there computer 2 times.
The first thing you will need to do is turn of automatic sync and then you can plug your phone in and restore from the backup that should have been made

Restore the device using the most recent backup.
If you have not backed up the device recently, then there is nothing to restore.

  • Should I upgrade to Tiger from Panther on a 6 year old G4?

Although my machine excedes the minimum requirements for Tiger, I have held off on upgrading for a long time, because when it first came out, I heard reports that it was much slower than Panther on older macs.
I now, however, have two pieces of software that I want to run that require Tiger, so I am debating again whether to upgrade. My computer is stable and runs well, and I don't want to hurt that or slow it down significantly.
My computer is a dual 550Ghz G4 with 640 mb of Ram and about 5 Gigs of free boot drive space. I did get the DVD rom drive installed when I bought it, so that shouldn't be a problem.
    Should I upgrade?

    Hi Matthew,
since you already run 10.3.9 it does not make much sense to upgrade. Many of the new features of Tiger will not run on your computer due to limited hardware resources. If you are happy with Panther, stay with it until you buy a new computer. My G3/900 iBook runs happily with Panther as well.
BTW: 10.4. Tiger is NOT slower than Panther, in some situations it is even faster.

they don't claim it but it is. I have never had a problem with the 2008 macbook, just the desktop. Narrowed it down to this after trying everything else speaking with Scottrade, Oracle and Apple.
I tried to downgrade but got lost at the utilitoes terminal part. any easier way? Apple wont help me downgrade through my care program and I have no idea.

  • Should i upgrade my iPhone 3GS to iOS 6.0.1 ?

    Dear folks.
A couple of days ago I bought an unlocked, apparently little used iPhone 3GS 32GB. To my surprise, the phone was still running iOS 3.1.3 (quite unusual to find this old iOS on a 3GS in December 2012). I checked out for typical jailbreak-apps and I didn`t find any. It looks pretty "innocent" in that respect, and it works like a dream. The battery seems to last boringly long. The only things that I would like to have on it are few but important (to me): I want to be able to turn off/on cellular data myself(always on on 3.1.3) and I need two apps that are no longer available for iOS 3.1.3 : Shazam and Maps With Me. NOTHING ELSE
I know that iOS 6 is available for the 3GS, but I`ve heard stories of 3GSes running into trouble after having been installed iOS 6 on. Like not reckognizing the SIM card, randomly rebooting, and having their batteries rapidly draining.
What should I do? Shall I upgrade and get the stuff I miss, but risk ending up with a troublesome phone? Or shall I stick with what I have but enjoy a good working phone?
I would be grateful for any suggestion.

Hi Michael! Thanks for the reply
I live in Norway, and the phone has been either provided by a Norwegian carrier, or bought unlocked from the Norwegian Apple Store. You can check yourself by going to Settings-General-About-Model and type the model number (MC133KN in my case) here: http://iphonefrom.com/en/MC133KN  But it`s unlocked, I placed a Lebara SIM in it and it works perfectly.
If it has been carrier-locked then most(if not all) Norwegian carriers are selling the phones on a 12 months subscription contract. When the 12 months are up, the phone is being unlocked by the carrier either automatically, or upon customer`s request(depends which carrier you use).
It`s good to hear that your 3GS works well with the iOS 6, still after having read about issues after upgrade I have a feel that the upgrade to iOS 6 may be a hit or miss.
I read on a forum that early iPhones can only support 3 major upgrades. Can that be true?

  • Should I upgrade to Maveriks from 10.6.8 or go to Mt Lion instead?

I've heard that upgrading to Maveriks can cause a lot of problems for an older MAC like mine.  My model meets all the requirements for the upgrade, but I have read a lot of horror stories about Maveriks and am concerned with messing up my computer.   Should I just upgrade to Mt Lion instead?
And if so, is there a free download? Someone told me it costs $20 but I know Maveriks is free.....   thx

The Mountain Lion upgrade is not free. Mavericks is free. If your computer can survive Mountain Lion then it can survive Mavericks. But if it's too old for even Mountain Lion then stick with Snow Leopard.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Should i upgrade to lion from leopard (10.5.8)

Besides the basics, I really don't have much knowledge on using Macbook Pro.
Lately I've run across some issues with my macbook pro. Being that my 3 year apple care is expired and not renewable. I have been contemplating upgrading to Lion. If I do this, any thoughts to how much it cost? and would I have to upgrade to snow leopard prior to doing so?
    thank you for your thoughts

The software cost is $29.00 for Snow Leopard then either $30.00 for Lion or $20.00 for Mountain Lion. But there may be additional costs in order to meet hardware requirements.
    Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
If your computer can run Mountain Lion then you only need to start with Snow Leopard from which you can go directly to Mountain Lion.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

  • Should I upgrade to Mavericks from OS X Lion (on iMac Intel late 2009)?

I've been using Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 on my iMac (late 2009) for a long time and have no complaint about it — and I wonder if I'm missing something in not upgrading to the newest OS. But will upgrading at this point create problems where currently I see none? Advice, please. Thanks.

And, here is a different view on Yosemite: I don't care for the changes in the user interface and I don't care about icloud integration; nor do I like the fact that some of my apps (iMovie, iDVD, etc) no longer work in Yosemite - I won't use the latest iMovie as it has lost many of its capabilities in editing and export quality options. So, although I am running Yosemite on my MBP, my iMac will remain with Mavericks so I can use the apps I want to use.
FWIW, you won't be able to get Mavericks unless you've purchased/downloaded it previously - Apple pulled it when they introduced Yosemite.

  • Can anybody tell me how to upgrade my iphone 4 from 4.2.1

can anybody tell me how to upgrade my iphone from 4.2.1

Connect your iPhone to the computer with which you normally sync and
use iTunes to update to iOS 6. Future updates can be done over the air
    using only a wifi connection.
