Should I upgrade my iphoto panther to Leopard or export and fresh install?
My Panther iphoto library got corrupted some how and I had to create a new library. I did not like this because it changed all the order of my photos and I could not organize them the way they were. I still have the corrupted library on my hard drive. I never deleted it for fear that I did not get all of my photos onto the new library. I think I pretty much did but not for sure. The dates that I imported the original library pics were all correct. Now that I had to redo the library half the dates are wrong because it's going by the created dates on the photos instead of the day they were imported. It's all very confusing to me.
Anyway.....now, I just purchased a copy of Leopard. I was thinking of doing a fresh install instead of upgrading my g4 in hopes that I would start with a clean slate. Only problem is trying to back up all those photos and then reimporting them. Do you guys think I should not mess with it or buy a firewire external hard drive, export or back up my files, do a fresh install and then re-import? One of the reasons I also want to start fresh is because my daughter went in and started deleting a bunch of folders she did not think she needed and I had to get thousands of files out of the trash. I don't know if I put everything back into the correct place. Come to think of it. My itunes library was corrupted as well and I had to create another one of those. So I have 4 libraries of music and photos filling up my 120 gig hard drive. Sounds like a good time for a fresh install upgrade right???

iPhoto '08 is not included on the Leopard upgrade - it is on the iLife '08 upgrade (a separate purchase from the OS)
And upgrading the software will not fix a corrupted library - you need to have a good clean working library before you upgrade iPhoto

Snow Leopard - Erase HD and Fresh Install or Just Upgrade Leopard in place?
Hi All,
Normally when I upgrade my Macs I will completely erase the HD and then do a fresh OS install with subsequent App and data reload. I find this helps me clean up old apps no longer used, etc with a fresh start.
Anyone have thoughts with Snow Leopard and best approach? You've opened a can of worms since no one has their hands on it yet. Wait till tomorrow.

Which is subject to change tomorrow or later once I get my hands on testing the release version of Snow Leopard. -
Should I just upgrade or do a delete and fresh install?
Ok I have my copy of Leopard and I'm ready to install on my MacBook. Should I just do an upgrade, or backup my files and do a complete delete and fresh install of Leopard?
What did you do, and why?
Thanks
DaveHaving done a lot of reading on this issue at many forums and sites (like MacFixIt) before I tackled the upgrade, I found the following:
1) Do not do a default upgrade.
2) After people had a chance to test the upgrade paths once 10.5 came out, the majority of comments I read suggested the archive and install.
3) The erase and install was highly recommended at first, but after a few days, when the dust settled, this recommendation didn't appear as much.
My first machine, I did a bootable backup and then an erase and install. All went well until the migrate wizard started copying files from the backup - it couldn't successfully restore one user's files (and it turned out to be me, with admin rights), so I had to manually set myself up. Fortunately, this was a test machine, so the problem didn't bother me. For the two other macs I have, I did an archive and install, and in both cases everything worked perfectly. If you go this route, be sure to delete the "previous systems" folder once you are satisfied with the upgrade. -
I recently upgraded to iphoto 11 v. 9.2 and now iphoto crashes every time I try to upload photos. I have tried to upload from my camera via usb, from my iphone, and from the memory card directly and it crashes every time. What can I do to fix this problem?
It was the folder that I trashed.

My Lightroom kepps stopping just after being loaded. My Lightroom is 5.4 64 bits installed on a Dell PC with Windows 8.1(upgraded from 8). I have uninstalled Lightroom and re-installed it with the same result. What could be the problem?
Try resetting your preference file next: http://www.lightroomforums.net/showthread.php?14226-Resetting-(or-Trashing-)-the-Lightroom -Preferences-file

I just upgraded from Panther to Leopard and need to upgrade my PhotoShop 7.0 to CS3. What do I need to do to insure the upgrade is successful? And... what do I need to pull from my OS 9 before I delete it?
*"What do I need to do to insure the upgrade is successful? "*
You shouldn't have to do anything...just install CS3.
Regardless, since Photoshop is not an Apple product, you should post your questions on Adobe's discussion forums, rather than an Apple forum that focuses on the isntallation of OS X:

Should I upgrade from iPhoto 9 to 11?
Hi
I have been holding back from upgrading from iphoto 9 to 11, but I recently got a new Macbook air with Mountain Lion and iPhoto 11 pre-installed.
My main iPhoto library is on my iMac which is still running Snow Leopard and iPhoto 09.
I have a very large library with approx 30,000 pictures built up over 7 years.
Ideally I want to be able to use iPhoto on both computers and I thought moving the library to a external drive would be the solution.
So far I have copied my iphoto library onto a USB3 external drive and tried to use it with the new iPhoto. Obviously it says I must upgrade the library first. But I have seen so many reports of issues with the iPhoto 11, is it going to be worth the hassle to do this, or should I find a way to install iPhoto 9 on my new Macbook instead?
I have played around with the iPhoto 11 and quite like the full screen editing view, but stability and confidence in the library is paramount, and I don't want to go ahead if it is going to be unreliable and buggy. Have they fixed most of the bugs now?
Would you guys go ahead and upgrade, continue with 09, or consider moving to Lightroom or another more stable product?
thanks
DavidOK, so I took the plunge and upgraded the database for the library I stored on the external drive, to use with my macbook.
The upgrade went smoothly, and very fast - much faster than expected as it took about an hour!
Now I am trying to verify that everything is A-OK before I buy iPhoto 11 on the iMac and start to use this external copy as the master.
I have found one issue so far, and could do with some advice. All the phtots and events seem to be there, however when I try and edit a photo, almost all photos (but not all, I would say about 75%) say "Image cannot be edited. This photo was previously edited with another application or with an early version of iPhoto. Duplicate this photo to edit it.".
Is this normal? Most of my photos were created in iphoto 9, some may have been edited in photoshop and resaved to iphoto, but all originated from an upload into iphoto originally.
Any ideas as to whether this can be solved or if I have to duplicate every single picture manually if I want to edit? That would be a pain!
thanks

backup Hi,
I have iphoto 8.1.2. Should I move to Iphoto 9. Most things i find when i google is all about how buggy it is and slow and the fact that it doesn't handle video files. But these pages are more than a year old.
Also, i have my iphoto library on a external USB HDD & have time machine running on a NAS for backup (it does backup the USB drive too). Should i have any other form of backup for my library or will Iphoto 9 recognize this library?
Thanks a lot!Only you can decide
There are several threads on this forum already about the limits of online reviews, especially on store and forum sites. An example might be your statement that "it doesn't handle video files". In fact, iPhoot 11 handles more video formats the any earlier version.
My experience is that iPhoto 11 is rock solid. This forum is no busier than it was with earlier versions of the app, and I'm a regular here since 2007.
When you install the new version it will ask to upgrade the library for its new formats.
I always make an extra back up before updating anything. But that's just me. As long as the external disk is formatted Mac OS Extended you should have no issues. -
Should i upgrade 2007 mac mini from leopard to lion?
I have a mid-2007 mac mini and would install the two 2G ram cards, but I'm not sure that the newer os would significantly improve things. Many posts suggest that it may be slower. Any thoughts?
The poster said "I never installed Rosetta with my Snow Leopard upgrade, " thus he does not have any software to replace

I get a warning when I try to order that I should upgrade iphoto before ordering. However, my 2010 MacBook is too old to accomodate the iphoto upgrade. I just want to be sure that my book will print ok since i'm spending nearly $200 on it! Can someone answer yes or no???
For your information a 2010 13" Macbook can run Mavericks and thus the latest iPhoto 9.5.1.
This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks. It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1: every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2: If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1.

How can I reinstall iPhoto? It's crashing after a fresh install of Leopard
I ran software update and did the 10.5.1 update. The disk utility finds no problems. Created a new account and iPhoto crashes there before it finishes launching. Everything else seems to be working. Is there anyway to just reinstall iPhoto from the Leopard DVD without redoing the whole install... that takes a very long time.
Lynn:
First try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and try launching iPhoto again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
Should I upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite or go for a new install of Yosemite?
I just asked this, got an answer, but it shows as restricted. I can't access my question, so I'll repost. Dammit!
Macbook Pro 15.4” Retina, October 2012, 500g, 8g RAM. In anticipation of the release of Yosemite, I have been ready to back everything up, screenshot all of my apps, print them so I can pick and choose after the install from where I have acquired everything. I am on a business scenario, not a typical home user. I use five external hard drives, so I can get it sussed.
I am a Windows convert, I still Bootcamp Win 7 because of some Sony video software I need to use for business. Upper end Photoshop user. I will be installing Final Cut Pro X as a replacement for the video apps when everything settles. I have researched and see that my BluRay production will take a hit because I will have a learning curve and there seems to be a bug with Final Cut Pro X and BluRay production. I'm sure it will be resolved by the time I am ready to switch. No biggy. I will be cutting the Microsoft cord when that takes place. I'm just giddy over it. Seriously.
What I want to know, and this is a very noob question, is, I want to erase and format my hard drive to accept Yosemite when it hits the release date. I want to go with a clean install rather than an update.
To all of you seasoned and dyed in the wool Apple people, if you were two years into Apple as I am, would you install Yosemite, when it is released, as a stand-alone, fresh install instead an update install? I know it will wipe everything, but I want to build from the ground up as an OS install. Start over, as it sounds.
Do you people think it an imprudent act to wipe everything and start over or a better idea to update with the Yosemite release over/on top of Mavericks? I know there will be bugs. I dealt with the Mail bug in Mavericks, then they fixed it. I know there will be issues, there always are.
Does it even matter?
Thanks for your attention and for looking,

I had thought the fall release of Yosemite would be a release candidate (baked.) Am I wrong? I know it's hard to know.
Through my years as a Windows user, I always waited at least a year after their OS releases before jumping on them.
There is no good answer anymore. All of the responses you have had in this thread are excellent. But Apple keeps changing the plan. I say wait until the 2nd minor release of Yosemite. The first 10.10.1 will be a bug fix release, probably within 3 weeks. The second will be a security update two weeks later. That is the point where it will probably be safe to install. You'll have a good 8 months of usage before having to worry about upgrading again. Also, this strategy applies to all releases, not just major ones. Apple doesn't do "bug fixes" like you may have been used to in the past. Builds 10.10.1, 10.10.2, etc. will be designed not to break any public interfaces, but that is as far as it goes. Otherwise, Apple is liable to change anything. The old adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it" simply doesn't apply anymore. Wait a week or two after each incremental update to see if there are big changes. Since you are a heavy Photoshop user, always check the Adobe forums before updating the OS. -
Mail in Snow Leopard (starting from scratch, fresh install, POP gone?)
Where is a good manual/FAQ/Help file that explains how to setup POP gmail accounts in the new Mail in 10.6??
Did a fresh install on a new machine, and can't for the life of me figure out how to set it up (keeps selecting IMAP by default, no matter what I do, then when I setup a POP account it just sits there).
How come it worked in 10.3, 10.4, and in 10.5 then in 10.6 it just acts all goofy and won't connect? Is this the definition of 'snappier'? I think so, because I'm about to.
Thanks.Like you I did a fresh install and when setting up my gmail accounts found the only available option of setup to be IMAP. I found the fix to this ANNOYING ISSUE.
Basically the auto-setup assistant that automatically starts in Mail w/ snow leopard looks to see if you enter "gmail.com" as your selected service and AUTOMATICALLY configures it to use IMAP instead of POP.
Now I have tried going in and disabling IMAP and entering all the correct POP settings after the wizard completes setup but I could never get a functioning connection.
The solution is to click the + sign to add an account but instead of butting "@gmail.com" change your address to "@yahoo.com". Type in the correct password and click continue. It will attempt to check the connection but will fail, click continue anyway.
From here you will have to change the POP settings from the defaults for yahoo to those of gmail. Remember those are pop.gmail.com; username is your ENTIRE email address. Ensure everything is right and click continue.
Again change the SMTP setting from those of yahoo to those of gmail's. Remember smtp.gmail.com!
Click continue and finish the setup. Once the account is setup you will have to change your address from @yahoo.com to @gmail.com and you are finished. Your account should connect and work just like it always did.

Leopard wireless issues and clean install
I've been wrestling with wireless problems since upgrading to Leopard (I've discussed my issues on this forum). I've tried all the suggested fixes I've found, but still have spotty wireless. I'm going to try a clean install next (erasing my hard drive). Any suggestions on how to do this and increase my chances of solving the problem? I'll have to install Tiger first, as I only have a Leopard upgrade disc (not full install).
Thanks in advance. There is an Upgrade DVD. It's called the "CPU Drop-In DVD" and was being shipped with new Macs that had already been built when Leopard was released. Several of my clients received their new Mac's with Tiger after Leopard was released. It was a choice of either take back the computers and reformat them and then repackage them. Apple chose to just include the disc.
I suppose the DVD could do a fresh install on a machine it came with, or one that matched certain criteria.
Many users of older machines have tried to use these DVD's to install Leopard to their Mac's that otherwise meet the hardware requirements for Leopard. It didn't work. The installer refuses to install to the older machine.
http://www.google.com/search?q=Leopard+drop+in+dvdproblem
I have no information about how the installer verify's the suitability of a machine, but using the DVD on another computer would violate the EULA.
Another thought... If you do a fresh install of Leopard you will probably want to reinstall iLife from your Tiger DVD's. iLife is not on the retail DVD, and I don't think it's on the drop-in DVD.
You may want to make a bootable clone of your existing Leopard installation with SuperDuper, just in case there are any problems with the installation or there is no improvement. Then you can just re-clone your backup to your boot drive to save time and effort. -
IPhoto is being difficult with exporting and previewing
I recently bought my Mac Pro off of a friend. He still had it under his name, and I changed it to my name under system preferences. I think it messed up the uploading, exporting, importing, and viewing of my pictures. I can upload them to the computer fine, but when I go to export or view them in iPhoto, all I get is a black screen. Exporting, and it tells me unable to create "users/(friends name)/documents/" Any help would be appreciated and I don't want to lose my pictures. I've already tried to rebuild the library with iPhoto Manager and with iPhoto itself. Thanks for the help!
JMHeck wrote:

It's a question of what exactly you did when you "changed it to my name under system preferences".
This is not exactly what you're looking for, but, IMHO, the best thing to do is to back up your photos (make sure they are the photos—double-clicking on one of them should open Preview) and anything else you want to keep to an external hard drive; then start up from the Install DVD, erase the internal disk (this destroys all data on the disk), re-install the OS from scratch, re-install your apps from the original installers, and restore your photos and docs.
This way, you start with a clean slate, which is what you want to do with a used computer (Mac or Win doesn't matter).
