Should I upgrade now?

My question is: "should I upgrade or change any of my software now -- to avoid problems in the future?"
I have an iMAC with Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X 10.6.8, and I use Appleworks 6.2.9 a lot.
(And I really don't understand what I just wrote!)
I use mostly simple spreadsheets, databases, and a genealogy program.
I'm looking for some advice from anyone who DOES understand what I just wrote.
Bob

First of all if what you just wrote is correct you really should correct your profile because your iMac is not a G5 also you are not running 10.3.9 either.
You are running the Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 which is the latest and greatest you can run and still use AppleWorks. So since you are dependent on AppleWorks, you should NOT upgrade to Lion. If you upgrade to Lion your will lose the ability to run AppleWorks.
Please be aware that AppleWorks has been declared obsolete. So you might want to consider migrating to another application instead.

  • Yosemite and CS6 - should I upgrade now?

I wish to hear from those who have installed the latest Mac OS. I am running a MacBook Pro 2013 with Mountain Lion. It's working fine with the InDesign Creative Suite 6 and I would stay there forever, but I am pressed to upgrade for a third party program compatibility. Does the current Mac OS work well with the In Design, Photoshop and LightRoom apps? Will I experience annoyances such as must reinstall the CS6 Suite, or performances slow down with this upgrade when working in PS on very large image files? Will my current InDesign 8.x documents be fully editable? Thanks for any part of answer.

If you're going to do this, deactivate the software, backup the data and do a clean install of Yosemite. Follow that up with a proper install (do not use migration) to reinstall you applications and restore you data.
Thanks Bob. …I know it's the proper way to do it, but it's a pain in the ... Not sure if I'm ready for that yet, too many apps to re-register.  So, installing a fresh system and retrieving the Applications and the Application Support folder is a sure way to troubles? …Don't tell me: the answer is YES, right?

I am trying to get my system current.  I am now running Mac OS X, version 10.6.8 (I believe this is "Snow Leopard").  What should I upgrade to?

The current system is OS X 10.8 which is downloadable from the App store, which you can upgrade to directly if your system meets the system requirements.  Note that starting with OS X 10.7, PowerPC-based programs will no longer run. So, for example, people with Office 2004 got surprised when they upgraded and found that the older Office programs would no longer run. Newer Office programs are OK.

  • Should I upgrade to Macericks now from 10.6.8 on my i-Mac(mid 2007, core 2 duo?). Will Mavericks be more secure than 10.6.8 ? 10.6.8 has been great, it runs great with all my apps but am concerned about future supportibility?

Should I upgrade to Mavericks now from 10.6.8 (i-Mac, mid 2007, core 2 duo)? Will Mavericks be more secure than 10.6.8 ?  I have the latest version of 10.6.8 and have upgraded my memory to 4GB. This could be one reason for me to make the move now.
10.6.8 has been great, it runs great with all my apps but am concerned about lack of support now. I know my PC apps will not work but maybe some apps that work now will "walk away" from 10.6.8 and then there's the security question of above.
I am also concerned about iPhoto 9 transition to i-Photo 11 and compatibility of my Time Machine WD Passport HD (format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) based on several questions in applicable forums.
Thanks for your help in this important decision!

If I were you I would stick with Snow Leopard. It's much better suited to your old hardware. That said:
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 with OS X 10.6.8. what should I upgrade to, for now?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.8. and I'm unsure about upgrading, but feel the need to. What should I upgrade to, for now? THANK YOU!

Keep your Snow Leopard installation and test Mavericks on a separate partition or external drive. You will probably want to have both options. Mavericks and anything else after Snow Leopard has changes to the user interface that many of us find pointless and irritating. And you won't be able to use any software that runs via Rosetta in Snow Leopard. You will have to upgrade software that needs Rosetta to a later version, or get something else entirely.

iOS6 and iphoto, iPad, Apple TV sync problem still unresolved. Turning on and off a few times per community advice have not helped. What should I do now? wait for an upgrade fix?
"&" is not the obvious bug/answer. Not sure what went wrong as I cannot select albums and events for sync. Situation is worse for iPad and Apple TV when error 1140 message popped up even before backup get completed.

Download and install the iPhoto 9.4.1 update, which was just released today. It may be the answer to your problems:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1598
Be sure that neither iTunes nor iPhoto is running when you install the iPhoto 9.4.1 update. After installing the update, then restart iTunes and iPhoto. By default, "All photos" is selected. Change this (it's no longer grayed out) to "Selected albums..." and you should be OK.

  • Should I buy now or wait for iMac upgrade?

After the recent iMac price reduction, should I buy now or wait until the end of the year for a potential upgrade? Does anybody think there will be much of an upgrade? Retina Display?
I am looking at getting an upgraded 27" with i7, 16GB and 3TB Fusion.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

General advice is if you don't need to buy then don't buy.  There is always something newer coming out in the next 12 months.  That said, also consider what you have now.  Sometimes newer models cut off older software or hardware and buying a new model may mean you have to buy all new software or some mission critical piece of hardware.  In a science lab where I worked they had old equipment for which there were no software upgrades for that model.  Buying too new a computer would have meant spending half a million dollars on related hardware upgrades dictated by the backward compatible software limitations of that $1500 computer.  They held off buying a new computer until they could afford new machinery.

  • HT202159 how long should an upgrade to Mountain Lion take? Our original download was interrupted by power outage and now seems to be taking forever.

How long should an upgrade to Mountain Lion take? Our original download was interrupted by power outage, it seems to be taking forever.

Update2: There is something very wrong with wireless on mountain lion recovery. I don't know what the problem is, but this link may explain:
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/10/os-x-mountain-lion-10-8-1-beta-released-for-dev-t esting-may-include-wi-fi-fix/
Wireless recovery would start out with over 25 hours estimated and kept on failing. It turns out to be a two step process of downloading a few Mbytes then a 4Gbyte .dmg file, but I couldn't even download the Mbyte file. I bought the thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in, restarted recovery and download of a little more than 4Gbytes took less than an hour. My limiting factor was probably comcast home internet rate of 12Mbps. The wi-fi wireless connection should be able to do over 100Mbps, so wireless shouldn't be much slower than wired, except wi-fi wireless is broken. Now that ML is installed and updated, wi-fi seems fine now, as I am using it right now, but I haven't tried downloading a big file yet.
Don't use wi-fi wireless for Mountain Lion recovery.

There's no need to go to the store if you don't want to. You can purchase and download the new version from the Parallels web site. In fact if you want to try it out, I believe you can do the download and get a two week trial version. Later you can purchase the serial number to make it official.
I cannot be certain about your data, but I did not lose anything when I updated to Lion and faced a similar situation.
    Best of luck.

  • Should I upgrade the hardware or replace the laptop?

I have a late 2006 model Macbook that I received in Decemeber 2006. I'm interested in purchasing a new Macbook, but am also wondering whether I should instead upgrade the hardware? The Macbook seems to always be pushing itself harder than it should as the fan is always audible and always has been, so much so that when I use Skype the person on the other line can't hear me very well because of it. It heats up like crazy too at every use. Sometimes it runs so slowly that it can take 45 minutes to even just close some tabs and windows down as it has to think about it first (spinning beachball). I'm in Uni at the moment and have been for a while now and would love for my laptop to run like it used to when I first got it, or even be able to update it's software (but even that's not possible because it's hardware isn't compatible). I've transferred a lot of my data onto an external harddrive to free up some space and help it run better, but it's still pretty slow in comparison to today's computers.
    Any ideas?

i would suggest going for a new Macbook or a refurbished one from Apple.
normally, i would suggest upgrading the RAM and swap the hard drive for a SSD.  unfortunately, that might not even work for you.
once you upgrade your apps to the current version, they tend to be more memory and processor intensive.
so upgrading your macbook might be a waste of money.
again, those are my thoughts and you can either go with it or ignore it.....
If you own a late 08 Macbook Uni like I do, then I would suggest to upgrade the RAM and go with a SSD to give it a couple of years more but because you have a 2006, buying a new one would be a better option especially if you want to install Mountain Lion.
    good luck..

  • Should I upgrade to Tiger from Panther on a 6 year old G4?

Although my machine excedes the minimum requirements for Tiger, I have held off on upgrading for a long time, because when it first came out, I heard reports that it was much slower than Panther on older macs.
I now, however, have two pieces of software that I want to run that require Tiger, so I am debating again whether to upgrade. My computer is stable and runs well, and I don't want to hurt that or slow it down significantly.
My computer is a dual 550Ghz G4 with 640 mb of Ram and about 5 Gigs of free boot drive space. I did get the DVD rom drive installed when I bought it, so that shouldn't be a problem.
    Should I upgrade?

    Hi Matthew,
since you already run 10.3.9 it does not make much sense to upgrade. Many of the new features of Tiger will not run on your computer due to limited hardware resources. If you are happy with Panther, stay with it until you buy a new computer. My G3/900 iBook runs happily with Panther as well.
BTW: 10.4. Tiger is NOT slower than Panther, in some situations it is even faster.
