Should I upgrade or wait it out?

I recently dropped my iPhone several times within the span of 2 months (first in a tub of soapy water, then twice from chairs).  of course now it has issues like it doesn't make a ringing noise (custom or otherwise) or texting noise.  Ipod function seems to still work though.  So, naturally I have pondered what to do.  Should I plunk down several hundred $ for a new phone (I just resigned with Verizon when I got the iPhone) or should I wait for the Iphone 5?  There's also the Iphone 4s but it sounds like that's not that much different than what I have.

You do know, I hope, that none of your older PPC apps, if you have any, will work in ML or in 10.9. But my guess is 10.9 will most likely be available from Snow, since you can get to the App Store from there. I doubt Apple will make ML a requirement; there are a lot of people still using Snow.
Besides that, 10.9 will be fresh out of the box and there may be bugs that will be needed to be worked out or around. I would never get the very first version of an OS. Maybe not even the second point update.

  • Should I upgrade or wait one more iteration?

Happy with your iPhone 5s?  I have the 4s and I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade or wait one more iteration.  My current model has 16GB and if I upgrade, I'd probably do the 32GB for $299 as I could use a little more memory for music and photos.
    Thanks.

    I enjoy mine. I have a 32GB 5s. I have had the iPhone, the iPhone 3g, 4, 4s and now the 5s.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 and AVCHD - Should I upgrade or wait?

    Hi All
I currently use Premiere Pro 5.5.2 on a Mac Pro and OS 10.7.3. Most of my footage now is AVCHD, from various camcorders, including Sony FS100 as well as several Panasonic and Canon at 24P, 30P and 60P at 17mb/s to 28mp/s bitrates and LPCM and AVCHD audio. I also do use XDCAM EX and Canon DSLR H.264 footage.
I'm really wanting to upgrade to CS6, it looks fantastic, however I have heard reports of various bugs that make it work less efficiently or not at all with AVCHD footage. Maybe the latest upgrades fix these issues, but I'd like to get some input from people who have actually used CS6 with Mac OS 10.7 and AVCHD files. I don't want to transcode first, this was my primary reason to switch from FCP to Premiere Pro a couple of years ago, don't want to go back!
Thanks much for any and all advice you can give me.

The Adobe GodHead (CEO) sleeps very well at night. takes home a wonderful
salary. and takes many a vacation thanks to all of us suckers that buy into
    Adobe's buggy software.
A forum is a place to let it out not hold it in. This doesn't mean foul
language, but it does mean telling it like it is.
I've heard that the AVCHD fix is due 17 June of this year; only in the CC
    version.
This means that there will be a constant fire under your but to make that
monthly payment; if not. you're out; and if you had any files in the cloud,
you'll have to re-up to get em out. Ouch!
I went through all of this with Avid for a decade and in the end I was the
loser and the CEO was the winner.
Don't buy anything until you see it work.

  • Should I upgrade or wait? I purchased, but have not installed.

I purchased Lion, but have hesitated on installing it because of the problems I have heard about. Does anyone have an opinion?

To answer this, you should consider these questions...
How dependent are on your Mac?  If it has problems, does this affect your job and livelihood?  Can you afford to have to put some time into managing little problems?
If you have 4GBs of RAM or less, please read this thread - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3238726
Are there compelling reasons why you should rush to Lion?
How easy would it be to revert to Snow Leopard if things go wrong?  (Can you easily replace the system disk or restore an internal disk to its prior state?)
Do you have a good, safe backup procedure in place now in case of nasty happenings?
These questions will probably allow you to decide.
In my case, I have two Macs, an iMac used for my key, but not income-earning work, which is still on SL.  I don't want things to go wrong on this system.  And a MBP, which is now on Lion.  If it messes up, I know I can pop the Lion system disk out and put the SL system disk in.

  • Should I upgrade to Yosemite or wait?

I'm ready to upgrade to Yosemite if it's ready for Prime time. Any comments?  Should everyone upgrade or wait for a few revision fixes?

    Heres my take.
    1. If your computer is running without problems currently > WAIT for 10.10.( 2 - 5 )
    2. If you are working on some major projects and need your computer > WAIT for 10.10.( 2 - 5 )
There appears to be way too many issues in the current version such as Mail, Compatibility, Wifi, Migration, Etc (if you read through the Apple Community Boards) to be making that leap in my opinion.  If you can wait it out and resist the temptation to do it (and lets face it, it really is like that candy bar you can't have), you might find yourself to be a happier person with a little less gray in your hair and aggrevation in your life.
IF have another computer to use, then do it.  LOL
Again my opinion.  Good luck in your final decision.

  • Should I sell it or wait it out?

I waited in line on July 20th to buy a Mac Mini Server with a quad core processor, hoping it would make a great media server.  I already have an AppleTV but I figured this would be even better and more flexible.  In the process, I retired a Hackintosh.
Anyway, I can't get it to work for its intended purpose.  Here are the issues:
    1. With more than one account logged in, video will not play for any length of time.
    2. With only one user logged in, video stutters.  Especially 1080p content.
    3. Occasional freezes at the login screen when fast user switching.
I decided to do a fresh install of Lion and briefly, the situation improves.  Over time however, the above problems return.  I tried to pin it down one one particular 3rd party program but was unable to, so I restored one of my Time Machine backups.
Another issue not mentioned above is that even with a perfectly fresh, seconds old, install, using screen sharing to connect to the virtual display (secondary logged in account) causes video to stop on the active account.  I confirmed this on my MacBook Pro as well.
Anyway, my concern with waiting it out is that I feel the Mini Server may not get as much attention when it comes to fixing bugs as, for example, the Air.  I don't want to wait a year to be able to play video with my media server.  I've also considered installing Windows on it (gasp!) but I'm not sure how good the boot camp drivers are for this machine.
    Thoughts?

I have installed all updates.  It's got 8GB and I'm playing the video to a Samsung Plasma connected via HDMI.
Anyway, I'm sure I have done this before but yesterday I decided to comb through the console logs and address any issues that I found.  There were 3 different issues.  One was caused by having the Wiki Server turned on and another was in relation to postfix.  The last one involved moving com.apple.ReportCrash.Self.plist from /System/Library/LaunchAgents to /Library/LaunchAgents.  For some reason the system was unable to find it in the default folder.  After that, the problem seems to have magically dissapeared!  Hurray!  I was able to watch an entire movie with no sticking or stuttering whatsoever.
I should probably try to pin down which of these changes alleviated the problem and send a bug report.  I may do so if I have the time.

  • Just installing a few updates from the Mac App Store for mountain lion on my 2010 MacBook Pro, during this it made a noise and then the screen and keyboard went off, like it is off. What happened, is it off...or should I just wait it out?

    What kind of noise?
The only things I can think of that make noise are fans and disks. Fans usually will not cause the computer to shutdown as you describe. My guess is your disk drive died. I hope you made a backup prior to start the ungrade.

  • My iMessages don't work since updating. It says the Messages database is being upgraded, please wait while it finishes or Quit Messages and relaunch it later. How do I get them working again?

My iMessages don't work since updating. It says the Messages database is being upgraded, please wait while it finishes or Quit Messages and relaunch it later. How do I get them working again?

    Back up all data.
Quit Messages if it’s running. Force quit if necessary. Relaunch it and test after each of the following steps. If the problem isn't resolved, quit again and go on to the next step.
    Step 1
Make sure you know the ID and password you use with iMessage. Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select
              Change Settings for Keychain "login"
In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
    If the box marked
              Keep login keychain unlocked
    is not checked, check it.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain.
From the Category list in the lower left corner of the window, select My Certificates. Look carefully at the list of certificates in the right side of the window. If any of them is marked with a red "X" as expired or invalid, delete it. Also delete all items with "iMessage" or "com.apple.idms" in the name, whether valid or not.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences... ▹ Certificates
There are three menus in the window. Change the selection in the top two to Best attempt, and in the bottom one to  CRL.
Log out and log back in.
    Step 2
Hold down the option key and select
              Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Move the following items from the Library folder to the Trash (some may not exist):
              Containers/com.apple.corerecents.recentsd
              Caches/com.apple.Messages
              Caches/com.apple.imfoundation.IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent
              Containers/com.apple.iChat
              Containers/com.apple.soagent
              IdentityServices
Leave the Library folder open. Log out and log back in.
    Step 3
Go back to the Finder and move the following item from the open Library folder to the Desktop:
              Messages
Note: you are not moving the Messages application. You’re moving a folder named “Messages.”
If Messages now works, delete the Messages folder on the Desktop. Otherwise, quit Messages again. Put back the folder you moved, overwriting the newer one that may have been created in its place.
    Step 4
In the Preferences subfolder, there may be several files having names that begin with any of the following strings:
              com.apple.iChat
              com.apple.ids
              com.apple.imdsmsrecordstore
              com.apple.imessage
              com.apple.imservice
Move them all to the Desktop. There may also be a file with the name "com.apple.imagent.plist". Move that to the Trash.
Also in the Preferences folder, there's a subfolder named "ByHost". Open it and do the same thing.
Log out and log back in. Test again. This time Messages should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. You may be able to put back some of the files you moved to the Desktop in this step. Relaunch and test after each one. Eventually you should find one or more that causes Messages to malfunction. Delete those files and recreate whatever settings they contained.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit Messages again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were. You don’t need to replace the items you moved to the Trash. Stop here and post your results.
If you later decide that you don’t like the results of Steps 3 and 4, you can undo them completely by quitting Messages and restoring the items you deleted in those steps from your backup.

  • Should i upgrade to Tiger?

i have a 1.25ghz eMac g4 w/ 512 RAM. ..should i upgrade from 10.3.9? or do you think it will be slow on this machine?

    Hi jonathan berry2;
First of all let me say that the upgrade from Panther to Tiger improved the performance on my old G4 so much I was able to delay the hardware upgrade until the PowerMac Quad came out six months later.
I don't generally recommend hold off on either operating system or hardware upgrades but in this case since Leopard is so close I would suggest waiting. If you wait you can see if your system can run Leopard which I suspect it will be able to then you can get Leopard. If not, you can get Tiger probably at a discount.

Normally I'd say clone your internal drive to an external, install Mavericks on the external and try it out that way (something I happened to do yesterday), but since the connections you have for a low cost external are  slow, it wouldn't be a fair comparison. In any case, while the real benefit of staying current should be increased security, the recent security issue with Mavericks that was heavily covered in the popular media (imagine that!) suggests waiting a bit to upgrade might be a good idea, and Lion is still supported.

  • Should i upgrade to windows 10

Hello, I wanted to know whether i should upgrade to windows 10 or not.  I have checked my pc with the windows 10 app and it says your pc meets all requirements. But i wanted to know whether windows 10 is a stable operating system or not.  When i purchased my pc it ran windows 8 and i upgraded it to windows 8.1 . My pc has some minor glitches since then. Most of them got fixed but there are a few. I didn't found windows 8.1 as a stable OS, it has glitches and is not fluid. And if windows 10 is good, then tell me how should i upgrade. I have seen there are two types of upgrading. One is you move all your files and software to windows 10 and another one is you start completly fresh. So what should I how and should i upgrade ?

@AA7, Hello and thanks for posting on the HP support forums.  At this point I would wait for a few months for all the bugs to be worked out with the OS and compatibility with software and drivers. It normally takes a few months for an OS to take ist stride when dealing with hardware and software.Keep an eye on the support page for your notebook.  Once the drivers and software for windows 10 become listed then upgrade. Thanks for the post and have a great day.You know it is a real shame that HP didn't advise people to do this before we upgraded. Now you admit that your drivers do not work with Windows 10. Bunch of idiots!

It is indeed all down to what you need to do with your machine.   Snow leopard is an excellent OS and as Baltwo suggests you have to check out your current apps and programs because PPC won't work on any higher OS than the one you have.
Andy's comment is very interesting and, I suspect, insider knowledge based     Certainly I would wait for Mavericks now it is on the horizon ... and then add six months or so for the bugs to be ironed out.
Good luck, whatever you do.   I'm staying with Snow Leopard.

  • 300w PS, 3.3v-24a, 5v-30a, 12v-12a Should I upgrade my Power Supply?

This post is a spin off of a couple of previous posts I started which raised a few new questions. Here goes: I have a 300w PSU (about 4 years old), 3.3v-24a, 5v-30a, 12v-12a. MSI VIA KM266 Pro, AMD Sempron 2500+, Kingston 256 Mb, Creative Platinum Live 5.1, HP CD burner, WD 80 Gb HD, using on board video for now. What I am wondering is should I upgrade my PS, or should I wait until I get a new Video card? Does my PS have what it takes? I have checked out a new 450w PS, and the rails weren't much higher: 3.3v-30a, 12v-17a. Does this make much difference? Any suggestions on a new PS, oh forum gods ?

IMHO YES! Upgrade now. Antec TruePowers 430 or 480 are what I use.

  • I regularly have 15 MB of Available Memory - Should I upgrade or is there an issue I should solve first? EtreCheck report pasted below

    Hello,
My MacBook is running super slow. I downloaded Memory Clean from the App Store and I regularly have 15MB or free memory available.
In Activity Monitor I usually see the following:
    ~800 MB kernel_task
    ~500 MB softwareupdated
    ~500 MB Image Capture Extension
    In Console, I see mdworker.bundle errors attributed to UID's: 501, 503, 1422
My current UID from what I can tell is 502. Other UID's left over from various upgrades are 89, 99, 235.
Lastly, Drive Genius is giving me a Drive Integrity Warning. But I can't create a bootable clone.
I have no idea if the above problems are related. I'd like to think I just run a lot of stuff that eats my memory and upgrading the RAM would be the easy path. What say you all?

  • Should I upgrade to Tiger from Panther on a 6 year old G4?

Although my machine excedes the minimum requirements for Tiger, I have held off on upgrading for a long time, because when it first came out, I heard reports that it was much slower than Panther on older macs.
I now, however, have two pieces of software that I want to run that require Tiger, so I am debating again whether to upgrade. My computer is stable and runs well, and I don't want to hurt that or slow it down significantly.
My computer is a dual 550Ghz G4 with 640 mb of Ram and about 5 Gigs of free boot drive space. I did get the DVD rom drive installed when I bought it, so that shouldn't be a problem.
    Should I upgrade?

    Hi Matthew,
since you already run 10.3.9 it does not make much sense to upgrade. Many of the new features of Tiger will not run on your computer due to limited hardware resources. If you are happy with Panther, stay with it until you buy a new computer. My G3/900 iBook runs happily with Panther as well.
BTW: 10.4. Tiger is NOT slower than Panther, in some situations it is even faster.
