Should I upgrade Panther or not? from OS 10.3.4 to 10.3.9?

For nearly two years I've been using iMovie 4.0.1 without any serious problems, only ones that I could sort out using helpful links from this forum. This includes a large quantity of iMovie edited movies burned sucessfully (with iDVD) to disks which work O.K. on my TV. I'm very apprehensive about upgrading because I remember reading in this forum that many people started getting iMovie problems after the upgrade (iMovie won't launch or 'crashes' etc.). One person, I recall, even said 'I wish I'd never upgraded' so it seems there are 'bugs' in the upgrade. However, I've been advised by my local Mac specialist that I should upgrade to the 10.3.9 version of Panther. Would I be best leaving things as they are or would I be better of with the upgrade (i.e. have the 'bugs' been sorted)?

eMac PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
eMac PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iMovie 4.0.1 and iDVD 4.0.1

Don't fix it if it ain't broken.
Unless you DO have problems, don't update.
Thank you , Lennart. I'll stay with 10.3.4.

SSince Apple does not support downgrading the iOS I suggest you start a new question that gives a good title to a specific problem. Then in the body of the thread describe the problem in detail, tell us what steps you have tried so far to correct the problem, what happened, and what error messages you received.

  • Should I upgrade to Macericks now from 10.6.8 on my i-Mac(mid 2007, core 2 duo?). Will Mavericks be more secure than 10.6.8 ? 10.6.8 has been great, it runs great with all my apps but am concerned about future supportibility?

Should I upgrade to Mavericks now from 10.6.8 (i-Mac, mid 2007, core 2 duo)? Will Mavericks be more secure than 10.6.8 ?  I have the latest version of 10.6.8 and have upgraded my memory to 4GB. This could be one reason for me to make the move now.
10.6.8 has been great, it runs great with all my apps but am concerned about lack of support now. I know my PC apps will not work but maybe some apps that work now will "walk away" from 10.6.8 and then there's the security question of above.
I am also concerned about iPhoto 9 transition to i-Photo 11 and compatibility of my Time Machine WD Passport HD (format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) based on several questions in applicable forums.
Thanks for your help in this important decision!

If I were you I would stick with Snow Leopard. It's much better suited to your old hardware. That said:
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later

                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Should I upgrade my iPad mini from iOS 6.1.3 to iOS 7.1.1? Thanks in advance

Should I upgrade my iPad mini from iOS 6.1.3 to iOS 7.1.1? Thanks in advance

No, it's not true. If someone were to buy it from you then it would have to be completely restored as new at which time only the then current version of iOS can be installed. Having an older version on it now makes it worth no more than if it had 7.1.1 installed.
When you sell or give it away the new user cannot use anything on the device that is registered to your Apple ID. That's everything. You will need to turn off Find My Phone, remove the phone from your @icloud.com Find My Phone, then erase it completely. Unless you do that the device is useless to another owner. Erasing it will result in having the new iOS version installed.

  • Should I upgrade iPad (1st Gen) from iOS 4.2.1 to iOs 5.1.1?

I am using iPad (Wi-Fi only) from last 2 years mainly for web surfing and emails. iOS 5 is sure slick and tempting. Should I upgrade or not? I dont want iPad to get sluggish after update, in that way I am better off with iOS 4.2.1 running smoothly on it. Help pls.!

    I dunno sabatoge.
It seems like it would be nice to have ipade 1st gen to get 6.0
But it would certainly help safari from crashing.     Still.
I wouldn't,t say that 5.1.1 is the LAST UPGRADE.          Apple might still do something.

  • Should I upgrade to Snow Leopard from Leopard on Early 2009 Mini?

Just got an Early 2009 Mini on eBay.  Here's the specs:
2 Ghz Core 2 Duo Intel CPU, 120 Gb Hard drive, 4 GB RAM and a Super Drive optical drive
Wondered if it should be upgraded to SL or not.  How does Snow Leopard compare to Leopard?  Also, I've noticed on eBay that there's Full Retail versions of Snow Leopard available for sale.  I've only seen upgrade versions, not full.  Is this true?
    Thanks.
    silverado93

I've got a 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo (2nd Gen) and had OS Tiger originally on it.  I've sinced went to Leopard and then Snow Leopard through the OS releases.  I found that since my original HD was only 80 Gb (it died on me last year and now have a 500 Gb) that the stream lined snow leopard was a great benefit as it made every program on the computer (Ilife, etc) smaller in size.  The only downside for me was that the USB webcam i had was not supported by with snow leopard and stopped working.  The Ecamm company who sells a usb driver online for usb based cams to work with macs do not support snow leopard OS and will not make a driver for it.  So I've gone back to Leopard for the time being.
On another note, with the older mini that i have, when i bought Ilife 11 and installed it, i found that the new iphoto program was very slow and lagged so much, that it was bothersome in comparison to the previous iphoto in ilife 10 which never had an issue.  It was not worth the upgrade for this machine and i have gone back to ilife 10 as a result.
And since my machine is older, my internal speaker has recently died, preventing me from using external speakers.  So just a note, that these items may fail, but are replaceable.

  • Should I upgrade my 2008 iMac from 10.6 to 10.7 or 10.8?

I'm wondering (a) should I upgrade at all and what to and (b) if I do can I go back to 10.6 somehow?
    (a) I would like to have increased connectivity between my iMac and iOS devices via iCloud, and I like the new Mail app in Lion/ML. Anyone got experience with older iMacs running Lion or ML?  How well do they cope?  Any advantages or disadvantages of note?
If a lot of people find that performance is really bad on similar iMacs the following is not relevant. (I have increased RAM to 4GB (max) and have a 320 GB HDD)
I was thinking of some ways to upgrade that might allow me to just see how the iMac handles a new OS and still allow me to go back to SL if it slows down too much.
    1. Install Lion on a partition.  If it works well install Lion onto whole system, if not delete partition.
    2. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6 via a Time Machine backup (doubt that would work).
    3. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6  via a backup in other software (CCC for example – which I don't have yet – might work?).

First check that your Mac meets the System requirements for Lion...

Also... Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using... Also note that Rosetta is no longer supported in Lion.

You should also consider more RAM... Lion is a hungry beast...

  • Should i upgrade my iPhone 4 from 5.1.1 to 6.1.2?

I haven't upgraded my Iphone 4 in a while because I heard that the OS upgrade would significantly reduce performance. now that there have been many new versions, should I upgrade to the latest OS 6.1.2??
what's the good, the bad, and the ugly of it?
    Thanks!

I appreciate your response. Thanks. I ask because I had heard way back, when the 4S first came out, "don't upgrade the OS unless you want to screw up your phone" -- this was even implied to me by an Apple store employee, along with several friends in addition to what i heard through the grapevine.
I suspect by now, perhaps these issues have been resolved? do you yourself, or know someone, who has an iPhone 4 (not 4S) who has upgraded the OS without major problems??
sincerely, thank you for your advice.

  • Should I upgrade my NVIDIA drivers from version 301.42 to 314.07 on my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro (6,2)?

    Hello,
I was wondering if it would be wise for me to upgrade my MacBook Pro nvidia drivers from version 301.42 to the current version 314.07? Reason, I am asking this is because my MacBook Pro has the nvidia GeForce GT 330m processor with 256mb of video memory and I haven't updated my Windows 7 64bit Home Premium display drivers for about 7 months. At the time I installed the 301.42 driver it was the latest WHQL release, and back then I did the upgrade after installing the Bootcamp 4.0 drivers (from the Bootcamp Assistant which had the 26X.XX driver version), Windows 7 SP1, and all Windows Updates. I used a clean install on those drivers. So far, I haven't had any problems with the 301.42 driver which makes me sometimes double think whether I should upgrade the drivers or not to the 314.07 version. As a result this is why I go to these forums and ask what could be the best course of action in my case?
    Thanks in advance!

Yes you should by all means update to the latest Nvidia drivers on the windows side of things. I presume you are using bootcamp (since thats really the only place this is relevant).
    But yes! you should

  • Should i upgrade 2007 mac mini from leopard to lion?

I have a mid-2007 mac mini and would install the two 2G ram cards, but I'm not sure that the newer os would significantly improve things. Many posts suggest that it may be slower. Any thoughts?

The poster said "I never installed Rosetta with my Snow Leopard upgrade, " thus he does not have any software to replace

  • Should I upgrade to Flash Builder from Creative Cloud ?

I'm using Flash Builder Standard 4.6 and Extension Builder 2.
Have just signed for Creative Cloud and need to know if installing the Flash Builder Premium from Creative Cloud will be a smooth process and I can continue working on my extensions without pulling out my hair
I believe the version in CC is 4.7 instead of 4.6, in this case what should I be aware of ?
    Thanks

Thanks for your answer, it seems it's still problematic and without design view .
Will stay with the old version.

  • Why should I upgrade tx fm firmware from installed 1.

My muvo 256 tx fm works fine playing my full ripped wma cds.what am i missing if i dont upgrade the firmware to the .9 that is available on this site?I dont want to miss any features but i dont want to mess up the players good performance so far.

This decision is totally up to you, a number people have updated the firmware (on many diffrent models) and CLAIM to have had either problems while upgrading or to have some problem later on. I for one haven't updated the firmware on my Zen as of yet, i am waiting a little while longer to see what other problems people have. I am like yourself who appear to be sceptical about these firmware upgrades. I don't know weather the firmware is responsible for this malfunctions or just operator neglect.

  • How can I get notes from my ipad to my mac?

I am being driven crazy trying to do something that should be simple - moving some notes from my ipad to my macbook pro.
I have tried Googlemail and it wont let me add any attachments on the ipad.  I've tried downloading software but can't find anything that works with the operating sytems I am using.  I want to throw this stupid ipad in the bin!  Can anyone help?

Do you want to sync notes from the iOS Notes app to your Mac? If so, it's very easy, but not necessarily intuitive, as Notes notes on iOS sync over to Mail notes on Mac OS X. Duh, right? This will change, finally, with Mountain Lion, when Mac OS X will finally get a dedicated Notes application which will sync with iOS's Notes app. For some reason, it will still use an email account to do it, though, instead of iCloud.
For this to happen automatically, you need to enable Note syncing within Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars. You'll need to have an email account that supports this. iCloud, AOL, Yahoo, and others will do so.
Other options are to use Dropbox. Dropbox is a third-party service and app collection which works on nearly any device and is free for up to 2gb of storage. Install the Dropbox application on your Mac and the Dropbox app on your iPad. You can then use TextEdit or any number of other applications to create and edit plain text messages on your Mac; you just need to remember to store them within your Dropbox folder. You'll need a good text editor for your iPad; fortunately, there are plenty – I'm partial to Nebulous Notes.
