Should I upgrade (purchase) from 10.4 server to 10.5?

We have a simple setup. Not using mail server, home directories, web server. Mainly file sharing and FTP. Have a couple simple shared folders with permissions setup, not using ACL's as I heard they can be difficult to "get right".
So the question is, does Leopard Server improve the manageability (ease of) over 10.4.
Why do I need Leopard Server?
BTW, how does the iCal Server work? Good or Bad

I'd like to chime in and just say that not everyone is having a bad experience. From being completely new to OS X Server, I've been relatively pleased with everything so far. I'm starting from scratch and not doing anything too crazy with Directory Services or Kerberos or anything, but I do have iCal Server up and running along with the wiki and File Sharing.
I will say the iCal settings are cluttered and a little confusing to wrap your mind around but it is definitely possible to get working. I haven't had any of the aforementioned AFP problems. It seems like most (not all) people are having problems when the Open Directory node is not the Master node, or when people have upgraded from 10.4 instead of a fresh install.
If you're looking to start a new service, like Final Cut Server, I'd say go for it. If you have a solid 10.4 install right now, I'd say wait until 10.6 and start from scratch unless you NEED 10.5 for something, but that goes for ANY program or operating system, not just OS X.

  • Should all tracks purchased from ITunes store remain available?

I have about 80 tracks purchased from the iTunes store. Suddenly about 8 of them are "not found" and have an exclamation mark beside them. I also cannot locate them on my HD and I know I haven't deleted any. It seems to be a random selection of tracks and not a sequence of 8 in a row. The error about "not found" pops up every time I sync. How can I locate these? I thought anything purchased from the Itunes Store was there all the time, older purchased tracks are still there so there is no rhyme or reason to this.

  • Should I upgrade JRE from 1.4.1 to 1.4.2?

    Hi,
We have a bnuch of JDBC-oriented Java applications, that do a lot of string manipulation and database queries (using JDBC) as well as using JDOM to process XML. There are around 20 applications and they run 24 hours/day and send messages to each other via JMS (which uses a separate commercial J2ee application).
I am considering upgrading the entire 'system' of applications from 1.4.1_05 to 1.4.2 simply to be 'supported' if a minor patch update is required - as was recently for the commonwealth games in Australia.
Although I've read the list of changes and the bug fixes between 1.4.1 and 1.4.2, I'm not too comfortable updating without hearing about other experiences and/or general advice from people who actually create these releases.
My thoughts on the upgrade path (eventually to 1.5) is to upgrade the system of 20 or so applications to start using 1.4.2 JVM - while the classes remain 1.4.1 compiled.
And if that works, and we're in 'supported' zone, we can later down the track move to 1.5 and recompile all the applications under 1.5.
That is to say, I feel that there is some unwanted risk in trying to recompile everything to 1.4.2 now. The applications are all up and running 24 hours a day so I need to minimise disruptions.
Does this sound reasonable? I can appreciate the desirability of running the same JVM that compiled the classes but should that really make any difference between minor versions? Isn't the basic purpose of minor releases to avoid compability problems but to provide various essential fixes and features? (I know minor release are no longer planned).
In other words, from what I understand, upgrading just the JRE from 1.4.1 to 1.4.2. should be a no brainer and practically without any risk at all. Is this how it's supposed to be in theory?

  • Upgrading 8703e from Blackberry Professional Server

I have a user with a Sprint 8703e device.  He saved some personal pictures on the device and now wants them emailed to his home email.  This option is not available on the 8703e.  I read that the OS needs to be upgraded to do this.  I made a HUGE mistake of connecting his device to my pc and ended up merging our contacts.  (Nightmare!)  I have never upgraded a device from the BES.  Can someone direct me to some documentation or tell me how to do it so I can get those pics emailed to him.  Once I get that done I am going to wipe his device and reactivate.
I love learning by fire...just wish it wasn't the president of the company

    Hi there!!
So, the user is on BES? And you want to use the BES email account to send the pictures from the device to his home email address? And you suspect that the device OS requires an update in order to allow this? Do I have that all correct?
So -- what OS is the device on now? And where did you read that the device OS would be in control of this?
I think that, as a BES device, BES controls this...but I'm not positive...check the BES settings and be sure that the attachment service is even active.
Edit -- and the 8700 series documentation is here:
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/docs/subcategories/?userType=1&category=BlackBerry+Smartphones&...
I don't know if that includes anything regarding updating via BES -- that'd be in your BES documentation, I'd think...

  • Upgrade path from Snow Leopard Server to Lion Server

Just curious what the method is for upgrading a server currently running snow L. to Lion. Do you just buy the app and install? Will everything "reboot" exactly as is was? (Users, groups, share points, security settings, firewall, etc)
As you can imagine any changes to a server in an office environment can be stressful.
Also if anyone has successfully upgraded their servers to Lion and has feedback I would appreciate it.
    - C42D

    Hi there,
I would wait a little to have the early bugs in both OS X Lion and OS X Lion Server sorted out.
One common upgrade path i follow :
    - Backup system disk
    - Backup data disk
Why save both disk for an upgrade (as you already backup the data disk don't you ? ) and not only system ?
Imagine that once you update your server to OS X Lion Server, it updates some data too (mail database and so on) and you want to go back to OS X Snow Leopard Server...that would render your data unusable !
Regarding OS X Server in general:
    - Backup Open Directory
    - Backup Services configuration
    Hope that helps

  • What OS should I upgrade to from 10.0.3 so I can surf with my iBook?

I just got high speed DSL at home and want to browse the Internet on my 2001 model iBook.
I have the airport card working with our wireless connection and have just installed the most memory I can put on the iBook. However, OS 10.0.3 and Internet Explorer 5.1 Preview Version that shipped with the computer just aren't up to today's web. Pages are missing information and IE shuts down often.
What OS system can I safely upgrade to so that my iBook isn't overwhelmed? Can anyone recommend a browser (an earlier version of Firefox?) that will let me read the paper online in the morning?
    Thanks!

OSX 10.2 "Jaguar", then free upgrade to 10.2.8 will open the doors while you can still have the same old look and feel ( 10.3.x introduces an ugly new metallifized Finder )
Jag is supported on your Book and takes not so much resources than Panther or Tiger ( most bloated OSX ever in my opinion ).
10.2.8 Runs Netscape 9,Firefox 2.0,Seamonkey,Opera 8.x,9x, Omniweb 4.5 and many many other actual Browsers.
You could even replace Apples Mail ( which has Junk-Filters in it ) with Thunderbird or any modern emailer.
It supports also the current Flash-Plugin, DIvx 5.2 and Java 1.4.1
Safari 1.0 is included in the 10.2.8 Update Package.
jaguar has ichat, isync, ical, imovie, iphoto included and can run later ilife editions up to version 04. itunes is supported up to version 6.0.5 which is all you need for podcasts and the music-store ( only Hi-Def Video,AppleTV,iphone and all those new stuff requires a later itunes ).
Jaguar is faster than Cheetah ( yours OSX 10.0.x ) or Puma ( 10.1.x ), has bundled lots more stuff and features ( like Rendezvous or built in Tablet / Handwriting support ) and is a solid base for lots of apps that are still around, Photoshop CS,CS2 or Microsoft Office x and 2004 for example .

  • Should i upgrade maps from 1.2 to 2.0?

    Hello,
I just bought N82 3 days back, it comes with the version 1.2 of Nokia Maps.. I would like to know if it is advisable to upgrade.? I have read many people facing problems after upgrade...
Will there be more detailed and updated maps in version 2?
Further, I have been given a 3 month trial for voice navigation, which i have not yet activated.. will i be able to use the trial if i upgrade?
    Too many questions.. sorry
    Thanks

I would advised you to activate your trial BEFORE you upgrade to Maps 2.0, because activating licences issued for 1.2 in 2.0 has been one of the problems.
However, as said above, 2.0 has a number of improvements and is a much tidier system all round. Extra features including a walking mode, so you can use it to find your way around towns on foot, and a satellite view of some major cities which is a nice touch.
    Kind regards.

  • Should I upgrade Firefox from v 8.0.1 to v 11.0 which is incompatible with ZoneAlarm Add-on, or continue to wait?

Have not upgraded Firefox because get warning of Incompatible Add-on -- ZoneAlarm Security Engine 1.5.350.0 . OS = Windows XP; ZoneAlarm current version; Firefox = v 8.0.1 . Want to upgrade Firefox but concerned about the ZoneAlarm not providing protection. Please advise.

This solved the issue. Installed latest ZoneAlarm that just became available. Then was able to update to Firefox v11.0 with no issue of the ZoneAlarm add-on being incompatible. Thank you!!!

  • Upgrade question - Should I upgrade from 10.3.7 to 10.3.9 or jump to Tiger?

Hi. Thanks in advance for reading my thread.
    Here's my dilemma.
Lately I've been unable to use certain programs and view some web pages which I believe is due to my OS being 10.3.7. For example, I can't upgrade to Quicktime 7 (which I need to perform some tasks - including fully use my video Ipod I think) and I've been having programs "Unexpectedly Quit" quite often. (I do repair permissions consistently and I use Mac Janitor weekly).
However, the main programs I run, Avid Xpress Pro 4.6, Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD, Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Microsoft Office 2004 all are running pretty well.
It appears that if I upgrade to 10.3.9 I will be able to upgrade to Quicktime 7.0 which would be helpful. But, upgrading scares me because I have 3 random firewire drives and I've read about problems with certain chip sets etc. In fact, in the recent past I lost a couple drives due (I think) to a chip set issue with a particular enclosure.
If I upgrade to Tiger I'm afraid of having issues with the programs I am currently using (like Adobe, FCP, and Avid).
I'm looking for any recommendations and opinions on what I should upgrade to. Keep in mind I'm a definitely not a Mac Genius.
    Thanks for your help.
    Steve K. in L.A.
Power Mac G5 Dual 2 ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.7)   2.5 gb Ram, ATI 128 mb

Upgrading would be a good idea. You can download the 10.3.9 Combo Upgrader directly from Apple's website (www.apple.com/support/downloads/.)
Photoshop and Office will work OK. I believe so should FCP. As for Avid you should check with their website to determine if the version you are using is compatible. If not you should be able to upgrade.
Upgrading to Tiger may be another matter. Although Adobe apps and Office will work OK, I'm not sure about FCP or Avid. Upgrades may be necessary for compatibility. Upgrading to Tiger will require purchasing the Tiger retail installer package.
To avoid any Firewire problems disconnect all FW drives before updating. Also be sure to do the following:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Transfer purchases from iPhone before upgrade to 3.1.3

    Hi all -
I hadn't synced my iPhone in a while (gasp) and when I did, I didn't have time to do a full software update. When I just went to finally do the 3.1.3 upgrade, I ran into some trouble.
I first did a full backup and sync. I then went to hit "Upgrade" and it gave me the ""There are purchased items on the iPhone that have not been transferred to your iTunes library..." message. I did both the File > Transfer Purchases from iPhone and also the right click on my iPhone under Devices and chose Transfer Purchases. So, now I should be clear, right? Wrong.
    Still getting the error message.
All of the purchased music in my iTunes library shows up as transferred in my Music in iTunes. So, could it be an App or something else? And, shouldn't that have transferred when I used that option (as noted above)?
Any help? I want to get the upgrade done and move on. Thx!

I'm having the same issue and have had this issue for a while with both my 3GS and my wife's 3GS. I verified that all songs purchased on my wife's phone were showing up in iTunes and then ignored the message stating I still had purchases that had not been transferred and updated to iOS4 anyway.

  • Should I upgrade to Macericks now from 10.6.8 on my i-Mac(mid 2007, core 2 duo?). Will Mavericks be more secure than 10.6.8 ? 10.6.8 has been great, it runs great with all my apps but am concerned about future supportibility?

Should I upgrade to Mavericks now from 10.6.8 (i-Mac, mid 2007, core 2 duo)? Will Mavericks be more secure than 10.6.8 ?  I have the latest version of 10.6.8 and have upgraded my memory to 4GB. This could be one reason for me to make the move now.
10.6.8 has been great, it runs great with all my apps but am concerned about lack of support now. I know my PC apps will not work but maybe some apps that work now will "walk away" from 10.6.8 and then there's the security question of above.
I am also concerned about iPhoto 9 transition to i-Photo 11 and compatibility of my Time Machine WD Passport HD (format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) based on several questions in applicable forums.
Thanks for your help in this important decision!

If I were you I would stick with Snow Leopard. It's much better suited to your old hardware. That said:
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Should i upgrade from photoshop cs3 extended to photoshop cs6 non extended

hi im just wondering should i upgrade from photoshop cs3 extended to photoshop cs6 NON extended...... would i loose options from my extended version?
also i dont use photoshop cs3 that much, does anyone think its worth me upgrading?
    thanks
    lee

    Good day!
I think I read that with 2013 the upgrade path would be shortened, so you are probably not eligible for upgrading anymore.
Apart from that the benefit of purchasing the current version of Photoshop naturally depends on what you are doing with Photoshop (both in terms of which features you use and how much you use the application overall).
Smart Objects have been improved quite a bit, Puppet Warp is an interesting feature, Configurator allows for the easy creation of custom Panels that can combine Tools, Commands, Actions etc.,  …
But to judge the programm yourself you could just install the trial – mind you, the trial is Photoshop Extended, so you may want to consult the Reference on which features you would not get with Potoshop Standard.
You might also want to look into Cloud Licensing – or at least »Adobe« wants you to …

  • Standard Upgrade Path from VMWare Server?

I've been using VMWare Server for years to test my software. Specifically I have 2 "beige box" PCs running CentOS running VMWare Server running various versions of Windows Server as domain controllers and file servers as well as numerous workstations. I have a complete mini multi-domain Windows network. When I run the tests for my software it really pushes the 2-3 vms involved with a lot of network communication and some disk activity.
With care and some brute force this has worked well. At least I don't need a stack of PCs. And it's free so it's hard to complain. But unfortunately it's not terribly reliable. The web interface stops working - sometimes only after a day. Clocks drift causing authentication issues. Generally bad things happen if I try to run more than 2 images on the same server. I've gotten to be pretty good at combating these problems but I'm hoping to find something a little more reliable.
So now I'm willing to actually pay for something (gah!) and I would like to upgrade. But VMWare has so many products I just have no idea what I should be looking for.
What is the standard upgrade path from VMWare Server?
    Mike

Ok. Two people say use ESXi so I guess I'll just try to burn an ESXi DVD and see what it's like. But ...
Is performance really good enough to compile large projects and do backups over and so on?
VMware Server has worked well enough for me over the years but performance was not like real hardware. But the real problem was reliability. If I ran more than 2 VMs at a time, eventually they would just get their tentacles in a tangle and I would have to kill them and delete lock files and bah! I'm going to assume by your endorsement that ESXi doesn't have any of these problems.
Also, the machine I'm using is a lowly DELL i660 i3-3240 with 8GB of memory. I paid $429 USD for it at a local consumer electronics store! This is no server. Will it even work?
