Should I upgrade to iMovie 08?

Hi there, I'm new on here so bear with me...
I recently got a new Panasonic HDD camcorder (model SDR-H20). But I have iMovie HD 6 on my Mac, which, I'm learning, doesn't work with this camera.
Am I right in thinking that upgrading to iMovie 08 will enable this camera to work through the USB cable?
Any advice or other suggestions wold be appreciated!
Thanks

You need to do some research about iMovie 08 before you jump in. It is NOT an upgrade to the iMovie you have, but a completely new programme designed for those that want to make quick little movies for You Tube and such. Get to an Apple store and have a look at iMovie 08 to see the differences.
Whether you want to go with iMovie 08, or not, or maybe use both iMovie 06 and 08, you will be better off to return that cam for a miniDV tape cam which records in DV, the source all iMovies need to work with.

  • GMA X3100 Macbook-Should I upgrade to Snow Leopard?

I've read all kinds of horror stories about this Graphics Card GMA X3100 and Snow Leopard. I see that SL doesn't support it. I'm running ok on 10.5.8.
Should I upgrade or not? I'm mostly doing audio in Logic Pro and will be doing more HD video in iMovie for YouTube etc.
I like to hook up an older monitor to mirror my Macbook's. I've read where people have had problems with this after upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6.
Should I stay on 10.5 or will I get any benefit from 10.6? I'd like to get as close to up to date as possible if it'll be good for me. Thanks!

  • Should I switch to iMovie HD? ...and other questions.

I'm planning on purchasing a new camcorder that can film in HD. I want to know if it's possible to import HD footage from the camcorder into iMovie 4, or if I should upgrade to iMovie HD for better results.
If I SHOULD upgrade to iMovie HD, do you think that I should buy the latest version of iLife and install it on my iBook G4, which doesn't have that much space left, or should I just buy a new computer that comes with iMovie HD already installed?
Another question I have regarding the type of camcorder I should buy: I'll most likely be using iMovie (4 or HD, depending on the answer to my first question), and I'd like to know if it's possible to edit footage that was filmed on a DVD or a harddrive camcorder, or if iMovie just works with DV tapes.
Your help would be REALLY appreciated!

    Hello PhyootchurBoi,
iMovie 4 doesn't feature HDV support, so if you want to edit you'll need at least vers. 5 - but be warned that capturing HDV will not be realtime on your machine (depending on your exact specs it will probably capture at 1/4 speed).
While there should be no problems installing iLife 6 on your machine (again depends on exact specs), iMovie 6 does not perform as well as iM 5 (at least not on my iBook G4, 1.25 GHz - it's rather sluggish). Some iMovie 6 features also require the installation of OS X 10.4 Tiger.
If I SHOULD upgrade to iMovie HD, do you think that I should buy the latest version of iLife and install it on my iBook G4, which doesn't have that much space left ....
Hard disk space is critical when working with video - I'd suggest that you get an external hard drive (min 250 GB) and make room on your startup disk.
.... or should I just buy a new computer that comes with iMovie HD already installed?
Only you can know if you need/want/can afford a new computer. A fast desktop machine certainly helps with editing HDV - but then again, it's not at all imossible on an iBook .... set up the right configuration, max out the RAM, and you should be good to go.
.... and I'd like to know if it's possible to edit footage that was filmed on a DVD or a harddrive camcorder, or if iMovie just works with DV tapes.
All camcorders that record to DVD or HDD - be they HDV or SD - record in some MPEG flavor, which is generally not editable in iMovie (or not without lengthy conversion).
HDV, as recorded to MiniDV tape, on the other hand, is also an MPEG Stream, which will have to be transcoded to either DV or Apple Intermediate Codec in order to be edited.
In any case the old rule is still valid: "iMovie is meant to work with firewire connected MiniDV camcorders"
    hope this helps

  • I have iMovie 09 and have successfully used an older Sony Handycam to directly capture and record. Now I have a Sony HDR-PJ230 and it is not recognized. Do I need to upgrade to iMovie 11 or ???

Now I have a Sony HDR-PJ230 and it is not recognized in iMovie09. Do I need to upgrade to iMovie 11 or ???

    Hi jcm2656,
iMovie ’09 does not support the Sony HDr-PJ230 camcorder. See this article for a list of cameras supported for that version of iMovie -
    iMovie '09: Camcorder Support
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290#1
iMovie ’11 however, does support it. See this article -
Apple - iLife '11 Help - iMovie ’11 Supported Cameras
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html
Note that iMovie does not support footage recorded in 1080-60p from this Camcorder.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Brett L

  • Upgrade to iMovie'09?

Is upgrading from iMovie '08 to iMovie '09 really worth it? I got my new macbook in December, a few weeks before iMovie '09 was released.

There are some good posts early on in the iMovie 09 thread. You could start there.

  • I regularly have 15 MB of Available Memory - Should I upgrade or is there an issue I should solve first? EtreCheck report pasted below

    Hello,
My MacBook is running super slow. I downloaded Memory Clean from the App Store and I regularly have 15MB or free memory available.
In Activity Monitor I usually see the following:
    ~800 MB kernel_task
    ~500 MB softwareupdated
    ~500 MB Image Capture Extension
    In Console, I see mdworker.bundle errors attributed to UID's: 501, 503, 1422
My current UID from what I can tell is 502. Other UID's left over from various upgrades are 89, 99, 235.
Lastly, Drive Genius is giving me a Drive Integrity Warning. But I can't create a bootable clone.
I have no idea if the above problems are related. I'd like to think I just run a lot of stuff that eats my memory and upgrading the RAM would be the easy path. What say you all?
    -Jeff

  • Should I upgrade my 2008 iMac from 10.6 to 10.7 or 10.8?

I'm wondering (a) should I upgrade at all and what to and (b) if I do can I go back to 10.6 somehow?
    (a) I would like to have increased connectivity between my iMac and iOS devices via iCloud, and I like the new Mail app in Lion/ML. Anyone got experience with older iMacs running Lion or ML?  How well do they cope?  Any advantages or disadvantages of note?
If a lot of people find that performance is really bad on similar iMacs the following is not relevant. (I have increased RAM to 4GB (max) and have a 320 GB HDD)
I was thinking of some ways to upgrade that might allow me to just see how the iMac handles a new OS and still allow me to go back to SL if it slows down too much.
    1. Install Lion on a partition.  If it works well install Lion onto whole system, if not delete partition.
    2. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6 via a Time Machine backup (doubt that would work).
    3. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6  via a backup in other software (CCC for example – which I don't have yet – might work?).

First check that your Mac meets the System requirements for Lion...

    See here to Buy it...

If so Contact Apple in your Country to Purchase a Lion Download code...

    In the US...
    1-800-MY-APPLE or 1-800-676-2775
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
Also... Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using... Also note that Rosetta is no longer supported in Lion.

You should also consider more RAM... Lion is a hungry beast...
You can use these Links to check which RAM is suitable for your Mac...

  • Should I upgrade the hardware or replace the laptop?

I have a late 2006 model Macbook that I received in Decemeber 2006. I'm interested in purchasing a new Macbook, but am also wondering whether I should instead upgrade the hardware? The Macbook seems to always be pushing itself harder than it should as the fan is always audible and always has been, so much so that when I use Skype the person on the other line can't hear me very well because of it. It heats up like crazy too at every use. Sometimes it runs so slowly that it can take 45 minutes to even just close some tabs and windows down as it has to think about it first (spinning beachball). I'm in Uni at the moment and have been for a while now and would love for my laptop to run like it used to when I first got it, or even be able to update it's software (but even that's not possible because it's hardware isn't compatible). I've transferred a lot of my data onto an external harddrive to free up some space and help it run better, but it's still pretty slow in comparison to today's computers.
    Any ideas?

i would suggest going for a new Macbook or a refurbished one from Apple.
normally, i would suggest upgrading the RAM and swap the hard drive for a SSD.  unfortunately, that might not even work for you.
once you upgrade your apps to the current version, they tend to be more memory and processor intensive.
so upgrading your macbook might be a waste of money.
again, those are my thoughts and you can either go with it or ignore it.....
If you own a late 08 Macbook Uni like I do, then I would suggest to upgrade the RAM and go with a SSD to give it a couple of years more but because you have a 2006, buying a new one would be a better option especially if you want to install Mountain Lion.
    good luck..

  • Should I upgrade to Tiger from Panther on a 6 year old G4?

Although my machine excedes the minimum requirements for Tiger, I have held off on upgrading for a long time, because when it first came out, I heard reports that it was much slower than Panther on older macs.
I now, however, have two pieces of software that I want to run that require Tiger, so I am debating again whether to upgrade. My computer is stable and runs well, and I don't want to hurt that or slow it down significantly.
My computer is a dual 550Ghz G4 with 640 mb of Ram and about 5 Gigs of free boot drive space. I did get the DVD rom drive installed when I bought it, so that shouldn't be a problem.
    Should I upgrade?

    Hi Matthew,
since you already run 10.3.9 it does not make much sense to upgrade. Many of the new features of Tiger will not run on your computer due to limited hardware resources. If you are happy with Panther, stay with it until you buy a new computer. My G3/900 iBook runs happily with Panther as well.
BTW: 10.4. Tiger is NOT slower than Panther, in some situations it is even faster.

should i upgrade my iphone 3g from ios 3.1.2  to 4.2? i cant use all the latest apps !

SSince Apple does not support downgrading the iOS I suggest you start a new question that gives a good title to a specific problem. Then in the body of the thread describe the problem in detail, tell us what steps you have tried so far to correct the problem, what happened, and what error messages you received.

  • Should I upgrade sistem on S660

I recently bought a Lenovo S660 from China. I live in Serbia, and this model is not sold in my country.
    - Android version 4.2.2,
    - baseband version S660 V26, 02/28/2014 17:50
    - Build number S660_S026_140228. In settings / about phone / no option to upgrade.
On the official website there is version 18/03/2014. Should I upgrade now or wait KitKat in September. I have a little problem with the proximity sensor. When I finish the call Phone does not turn on my screen to end the call.
Could someone explain how to perform system upgrade on this phone.
    thank you

Hi, I have had the same problem. But, I follow this instructions and now I have Kitkat 4.4.2 with multilingual software and Google playstore works.
Use this link, http://www.androidrookies.com/search/label/Lenovo   find ur phone and problem, ask Andy for help (he is the guy who knows everything). U have to do few steps to solve problems but nothing is to hard. I made it, so u can do it, too.

  • HT1338 I have an older macbook pro running OSX 10.6.8. Should I upgrade the OS?

    SHOULD I UPGRADE FROM 10.6.8?

10.7 or above will not run your PPC based programs, so that's a cost.
10.7 or above will need 4GB or more RAM, so that's a cost.
10.7 or above is slower than 10.6, so that's a cost in performance
If your machine is out of AppleCare, then if 10.7/10.8 hoses your machine somehow (like it did mine), then your screwed and have to buy a new one.
If the machine originally came with 10.4 or 10.5, then you certainly don't want to upgrade past 10.6.8 and slow it down, just run it until the wheels fall off.
I only advise Early 2011 machines and later to upgrade to 10.8, then only under AppleCare.
Apple is issuing security updates for 10.6, installed anti-virus, and it has about 30% version market share, so your safe for now.

I am trying to get my system current.  I am now running Mac OS X, version 10.6.8 (I believe this is "Snow Leopard").  What should I upgrade to?

The current system is OS X 10.8 which is downloadable from the App store, which you can upgrade to directly if your system meets the system requirements.  Note that starting with OS X 10.7, PowerPC-based programs will no longer run. So, for example, people with Office 2004 got surprised when they upgraded and found that the older Office programs would no longer run. Newer Office programs are OK.

  • Rephrase..Have 2009 iMac running snow leopard should I upgrade to Mavericks

Rephrase..Have 2009 iMac running snow leopard should I upgrade to Mavericks

If your machine meets the specs, the latest is Yosemite; make sure you check all the requirements as your machine falls right at the back end of being supported - meaning that it will not run at its maximum speed due to an older processor. You'd also need an absolute minimum opf 4 GB RAM - 8 would be much better.
