Should I Upgrade to VoIP, or use PBX

We now use an Alcatel PBX, 15 years old, with Lucent 8410d digital phones. We have 200 users at one site, and 100 users at three remote sites, with data T-1s connecting them. Is VoIP absolutely the best way to go, or should I look at mid-range PBX solutions. If VoIP, is the Cisco brand the worth the extra money? Thanks. jc

Do you like Coke or Pepsi? Are you a Republician or a Democrat? Do you watch the Office or Heroes? The point is that there is alot of personal opinion in what you are asking. And a look of non-quangtifiables.
First choice, to VoIP or not to VoIP. WIth a 15-year only PBX, you are probably going to need a change anyway. The only serious options are a new IP PBX or an upgrade to the Alcatel that will enable IP. The IP-enabled option may end up being cheaper, because it allows you to keep existing handsets. It also reduces the amount of change that your users will face. However, it does tie you down to a single vendor and probably a single topology. And maintenance expenses will probably be higher.
A new IP PBX would probably be most people's choice here, but hey, it's a Cisco IPT forum. (If you go to a Ears, Nose, Throat doctor, he will probably tell you that you have a problem in your ears, your nose, or your throat.) This will probably included a larger initial outlay of capital and services, but in general, maintance will probably be cheaper. Now, if you go with an IP PBX, which do you go with? Obviously Cisco is the popular choice around here. It is expensive, but it also works. Lots of support is available and lots of trained and certified professionals can be found to install and support it. Asterix is the other major option, but this is the opposite of Cisco in a lot of ways. Cheap, difficult to find support, difficult to find people to install. However, when instaleld correctly, it works as well as Cisco. Some would say even better, as Asterix has a broader feature set. But typically the support issue is enough to drive most businesses away.
Aside from Cisco and Asterix, the only other IP PBX worth mentioning is Avaya's IP Office, but that is really more of just an IP enabled PBX/Key system. so probably not a canidate unless you are already using Avaya.

You are on Windows 2000, you do not have a "Firefox" button, and should consider yourself to be fortunate in that you still have menus and don't have to do anything to get the menus back instead of the "Firefox" button. (The same applies to Windows XP users).
Use the "File" menu to get to Import. You are not on Windows 7 or Vista, and don't have to put up with the nonsense added for Aero.
If you want the "Firefox" button you can get it with View -> toolbars -> (uncheck) Menu Bar. The menu bar and the "Firefox" button were supposed to be mutually exclusive (which is impossible in some cases without being incompatible).
Once you are using the "Firefox" button ...
Use the "Alt" key to view the menu bar (temporarily) containing File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, and Help. On Windows 7 and Vista, the menu bar was hidden by default in Firefox 4 and above. These menu items are more or less available under the "Firefox" button which has the most used of the built-in Firefox menu items available in a different format.
To get back to having menus again. "Firefox" button -> Options (second column) -> (check) Menu Bar
You can make '''Firefox 7.0.1''' look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered '''items 1-10''' in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6)]. Should I upgrade to Snow Leopard/ Lion using a MacBook Pro with 2.26 GHz Inetl Core 2 Duo Processor and 2GB Memory? Can my old macbook take it?

Yes. You should be fine with Snow Leopard, but Lion requires a minimum of 2 GBs of RAM. If you upgrade to Lion I would first upgrade your RAM to at least 4 GBs if your model supports it. Also, see:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

I am considering a base 21" iMac ($1099 @ Best Buy) for home use.  It would be my first Mac.  Is the base model powerful enough for everyday home use and some light video editing or should I upgrade the CPU, Ram and to a Fusion drive?
Purchasing with the upgrades through Apple would add about $800 over the Black Friday deal at Best Buy.  Just looking for some advice if I will be satisfied with the based model.

All models will do what you want. Upgraded models will do it faster than the standard models.
Just why are you thinking of switching to a Mac?

  • Using OSX10.6.8 need to upgrade what should I upgrade to

My Macbook Pro runs on OSX version 10.6.8.  It started running slow a few days ago I'm concerned about a virus. Want to upgrade to OS but not sure which OS I should upgrade to.  I'm not computer savvy so Im asking what OS should I upgrade to. I've been happy with my mac for 5 yrs.

My Mac is running normally at this point.  Slow speed is gone.   Here is the report:

  • I regularly have 15 MB of Available Memory - Should I upgrade or is there an issue I should solve first? EtreCheck report pasted below

    Hello,
My MacBook is running super slow. I downloaded Memory Clean from the App Store and I regularly have 15MB or free memory available.
In Activity Monitor I usually see the following:
    ~800 MB kernel_task
    ~500 MB softwareupdated
    ~500 MB Image Capture Extension
    In Console, I see mdworker.bundle errors attributed to UID's: 501, 503, 1422
My current UID from what I can tell is 502. Other UID's left over from various upgrades are 89, 99, 235.
Lastly, Drive Genius is giving me a Drive Integrity Warning. But I can't create a bootable clone.
I have no idea if the above problems are related. I'd like to think I just run a lot of stuff that eats my memory and upgrading the RAM would be the easy path. What say you all?

I had Leopard on may Mac. I upgraded to Mountain Lion using Snow Leopard. I can't use my video with Mountain Lion. Can I load Snow Leopard on an external hard drive so I can use it with my camera?

First, you cannot do this if you have a Boot Camp partition.
    Second: Create a new partition.
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
    Third: Install Snow Leopard.
Boot from your Snow Leopard DVD. Follow instructions for installation being sure that before you actually install Snow Leopard you have selected the new partition as your target destination.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo
          appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

  • Should I upgrade my 2008 iMac from 10.6 to 10.7 or 10.8?

I'm wondering (a) should I upgrade at all and what to and (b) if I do can I go back to 10.6 somehow?
    (a) I would like to have increased connectivity between my iMac and iOS devices via iCloud, and I like the new Mail app in Lion/ML. Anyone got experience with older iMacs running Lion or ML?  How well do they cope?  Any advantages or disadvantages of note?
If a lot of people find that performance is really bad on similar iMacs the following is not relevant. (I have increased RAM to 4GB (max) and have a 320 GB HDD)
I was thinking of some ways to upgrade that might allow me to just see how the iMac handles a new OS and still allow me to go back to SL if it slows down too much.
    1. Install Lion on a partition.  If it works well install Lion onto whole system, if not delete partition.
    2. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6 via a Time Machine backup (doubt that would work).
    3. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6  via a backup in other software (CCC for example – which I don't have yet – might work?).

First check that your Mac meets the System requirements for Lion...
    Lion Tech Specs  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/SP629
    See here to Buy it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
If so Contact Apple in your Country to Purchase a Lion Download code...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
    In the US...
    1-800-MY-APPLE or 1-800-676-2775
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
Also... Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using... Also note that Rosetta is no longer supported in Lion.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
You should also consider more RAM... Lion is a hungry beast...
You can use these Links to check which RAM is suitable for your Mac...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/
If in the UK... Go to http://www.crucial.com
It is Important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
Those sites also have videos on how to Install RAM should you need it...

  • Should I upgrade the hardware or replace the laptop?

I have a late 2006 model Macbook that I received in Decemeber 2006. I'm interested in purchasing a new Macbook, but am also wondering whether I should instead upgrade the hardware? The Macbook seems to always be pushing itself harder than it should as the fan is always audible and always has been, so much so that when I use Skype the person on the other line can't hear me very well because of it. It heats up like crazy too at every use. Sometimes it runs so slowly that it can take 45 minutes to even just close some tabs and windows down as it has to think about it first (spinning beachball). I'm in Uni at the moment and have been for a while now and would love for my laptop to run like it used to when I first got it, or even be able to update it's software (but even that's not possible because it's hardware isn't compatible). I've transferred a lot of my data onto an external harddrive to free up some space and help it run better, but it's still pretty slow in comparison to today's computers.
    Any ideas?

i would suggest going for a new Macbook or a refurbished one from Apple.
normally, i would suggest upgrading the RAM and swap the hard drive for a SSD.  unfortunately, that might not even work for you.
once you upgrade your apps to the current version, they tend to be more memory and processor intensive.
so upgrading your macbook might be a waste of money.
again, those are my thoughts and you can either go with it or ignore it.....
If you own a late 08 Macbook Uni like I do, then I would suggest to upgrade the RAM and go with a SSD to give it a couple of years more but because you have a 2006, buying a new one would be a better option especially if you want to install Mountain Lion.
    good luck..

They are Safari bookmarks and Snow Leopard Safari will open in Mountain Lion, but won't give you a window?????
Here are the bookmarks, since I'm now in Snow Leopard:

Advance warning - Mail worked fine.
I had fits with the last link I posted. At first it worked fine, then all of a sudden, it quit working. I now have iCloud - iCal syncing, but iCal is read only. Not a real big deal since you can log onto iCloud using Safari and post a new event.
I finally gave up on Address Book because it kept creating multiple contacts, which if you tried to merge or delete the multiple contacts, the contacts were deleted. It also worked at first and then stopped working as it should.

  • Should i upgrade my iphone 3g from ios 3.1.2  to 4.2?

should i upgrade my iphone 3g from ios 3.1.2  to 4.2? i cant use all the latest apps !

SSince Apple does not support downgrading the iOS I suggest you start a new question that gives a good title to a specific problem. Then in the body of the thread describe the problem in detail, tell us what steps you have tried so far to correct the problem, what happened, and what error messages you received.

  • Should I upgrade sistem on S660

I recently bought a Lenovo S660 from China. I live in Serbia, and this model is not sold in my country.
    - Android version 4.2.2,
    - baseband version S660 V26, 02/28/2014 17:50
    - Build number S660_S026_140228. In settings / about phone / no option to upgrade.
On the official website there is version 18/03/2014. Should I upgrade now or wait KitKat in September. I have a little problem with the proximity sensor. When I finish the call Phone does not turn on my screen to end the call.
Could someone explain how to perform system upgrade on this phone.
    thank you

Hi, I have had the same problem. But, I follow this instructions and now I have Kitkat 4.4.2 with multilingual software and Google playstore works.
Use this link, http://www.androidrookies.com/search/label/Lenovo   find ur phone and problem, ask Andy for help (he is the guy who knows everything). U have to do few steps to solve problems but nothing is to hard. I made it, so u can do it, too.

  • I have a 24-inch Mid 2007 iMac. Should I upgrade to Yosemite?

I have a 24-inch Mid 2007 iMac. Should I upgrade to Yosemite?  I was advised by genius bar that it would slow down my iMac.

According to sources such as http://mactracker.ca download database specs for
the iMac (24-inch Mid 2007) your computer can use more RAM than it has now.
Maximum Memory:    6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots:    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
•iMac: How to remove or install memory
And so it should work better even if you stay with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5.
The hardware upgrade will help the Mac OS + applications, in basic functions.
[This computer is already considered 'vintage' by Apple...]
Depending on the amount of use the computer has seen so far, it may also be
a candidate for a replacement hard disk drive; perhaps a larger capacity, too.
If you consider an upgrade, also consider a complete backup and a bootable
clone of the current (if updated to 10.8.5 with its applications updated) OS X
on an externally enclosed hard disk drive with its own power supply. You can
see a few of these that do not run on Mac port power, & standalone, at OWC.
{The company known as OWC is macsales.com, a fair example of mac-centric
    supplier of quality products for Mac community, awhile. Or so people tell me.}
Clone utilities such as superduper, carboncopy cloner, or disk utility can work.
Test a cloned OS X copy for boot-ability and other function before moving on.
Could be you'd be better off with this computer on Mt Lion than a later OS X.
And a newer later computer should also have hardware specs and some up-
ward expandability for use with the expected new & future changes to OS X.
Hopefully you can get some fair use and more years from your iMac 24".
And that means hope for the best, and plan for the worst. Backup, backup...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Flash CSE VS Flash 8, should I upgrade?

I am using Flash 8 now and about intermediate user, should I
upgrade to CS3 since I have not mastered 8? Don't really know what
    the advantages would be.

Adobe's prices everywhere outside the USA are out of line.
I'm in Hong Kong, where there is no sales tax and no VAT. But I am
still irked by the fact that an upgrade to Flash CS3 costs a full
US$100 more in Hong Kong than in the USA. Don't tell me about
shipping costs. Surface shipping even a partial container from the
USA to Hong Kong costs LESS per unit than sending it in unionized
trucks from LA to New York.
So it costs me less to ask a friend in the USA to buy Flash
for me at full retail, PLUS tax, and to spend $35 sending it to me
by mail or FedEx, than to buy it locally.
Meanwhile, Adobe and other software companies scream and cry
and wonder why there is so much computer software piracy in my part
of the world. Every time software companies try to rip me off I am
SOOOO tempted to take the tram down to my local computer center and
spend US$2.60 for a bootleg, fully cracked copy of Flash. No, I
won't really do it. But if they'd just set the prices the same
worldwide, I wouldn't feel that angry temptation at all.
