Should I use -10dBV, +4dBU or low gain for synths? Or a DI box?

Hi Guys,
I've recently purchased an RME UFX audio interface which I'm running with Logic, and I'm not quite clear which setting I should be using for synths that are coming in through the line inputs of the RME.
The options are -10dBV, +4dBU or low gain. I know that there is a preferable setting, however I'm not clear on what it is (or what the different uses for these settings would be).
I recently read in Sound on Sound that even if an interface has line level inputs, it's always a lot better to run synths and keyboards through a DI box. Is this actually what I should be doing? Or do the above setting options mean that I don't need to worry about a DI?
I'd love any advice on this from someone who is clearer on it than I am!
Cheers and thanks,
Mike

Most synths are either switchable for +4 or -10 output. If not, they are usually -10. If the level seems low when the interface is set to +4 then set it to -10. Low gain is probably a hi impedance guitar level input.

  • Should I use Standard C++ Containers and Stuff for games and other real time activities?

    Hello,
    I'm a C++ developer using VS 2012 and VS 2010 for developing AAA titles. I have read about not using STL and other stuff provided in the standard headers that come with VS. I read most of the stuff on the websites based on game programming and some
    are really from the people well known in the industry. I have seen cases where they wont even use vector, list, map and others and not even use utility functions and algorithms. In such cases they write those containers and stuff themselves which has almost
    the same interface and so much of debug and implementation time spent on such huge code.
    I have two questions:
    1: Isn't the C++ implementation that comes with VS optimized for the platform for better performance? Isn't it using some intrinsic functions that people on the client end doesn't know about and supplying their own implementation would indeed be
    more slower in basic container operations such as insert, remove, find, swap, copy? Lets assume that we supply our own custom allocators for faster memory management to every container that we use. Also, they take care of fragmentation, alignment and stuff.
    Why develop custom containers with almost same interface, why not spend that time on writing allocators and other stuff that might actually help?
    2: There are times when we include a lot, a lot, of unnecessary stuff through the standard headers in a huge code base. Unnecessary, because we only needed a thing or two from such huge headers including other huge headers and so on. Now, I know templates
    aren't instantiated unless used, same goes for the members functions inside them and blah blah. Since, these are precompiled headers, it is safe to assume that there is no compile time hit for that unnecessary stuff. My question is, is there any hidden effect
    of such inclusions on code size (executable) that grows with the huge growth of the code base? In my opinion there shouldn't be, but I wanna know I'm not mistaken just in case.

    Hi
    I can tell you a story about one of our projects. We had to implement a block management system for harddisks (like the parts of file systems that allocate, free blocks and do the bookkeeping stuff). Now, one guy was convinced, that we should use the STL,
    because it's easy to use and very well optimized and things like that. An other one said, that he would implement it by hand. So we decided to do both for a little test. The result was, that the hand implemented thing was much easier to write and much faster...
    and the one using STL saw, that some classes were so slow, that he couldn't believe it... he then tryed to build some classes by hand and exchange them (e.g. array classes and stuff like that) and it was way faster than the STL and he wrote them in minutes
    (!)... since then nobody wanted to use STL again... we don't even try it. It ended that we wrote our own string and array classes and stuff like that... easy little things that we understand. Now it's easy to use and fast and still flexible, because we know
    what it's doing...
    ... but, that's just a story about our development and of course, we're often programming very close to the hardware and also using assembler languages often... so, I don't know what this tells us... you have to decide :-)

  • What programs should I use to make an interactive ebook for ipad?

    What programs should I use to make an interactive children's ebook for ipad?

    Adobe has a DPS add-on for InDesign (http://www.adobe.com/products/digital-publishing-suite-single.html) and it handles all the page transitions as well as swapping between portait and landscape. I think the way most people work is the pages are built in inDesign and regions of animation from EA are added second. But if every page had full screen animation, I suppose you may want to build your pages in Edge first.

  • If we have 3 iPhones, and use the same iTunes for all content, should we use 3 Apple IDs and authorize for all 3 or just use 1 ID?

    I want to enable us to share all apps, music, videos and photos, but enable each phone to keep its contacts and history separate. If I use 1 ID, all new purchases will go on the same credit card, which I'm not sure is ideal, but not horrible. Since we use the same computer and iTunes using only 1 appleID, and the phones are new to the equation since it was only iPods before, what is the best way to handle a family with 3 phones that can share all entertainment content, but not all phone-related stuff? I saw that you can use one AppleID for purchases, but another for iCloud. That may be the best solution, but I don't know enough about this yet to move forward yet- migrating from Android...
    Appreciate the help.

    Thanks for the help, but a follow up question now.
    My iPhone won't arrive for a little while, but my wife already got hers and she wants to set it up now. Using my Apple ID for the purchases, if she starts setting hers up, can she change her iCloud ID to something else quickly? It keeps telling us that we have to sign in with the AppleID first.
    Should we just set up an iCloud account via normal internet before trying all this via iPhone?

  • Should i use Business system or Business service for a 3rd party file sys?

    Hi Gurus
    My requirement is to send a file from 3rd party client system to SAP ECC system.
    I want to confugure a file sender CC to pickup the file and send it to ECC system thru proxy.
    Now, after going thru the SAP definitions of 3rd party Business system (if the system is present the landscape and technical details are available) and Business service (if system's technical details is not available because it is not present in the landscape. Only the interface details are available, for ex: external webservice), i am not sure which one to use.
    What is the use of using a 3rd Business system instead of using business service in my current situation?
    In both the cases, i can use a file sender CC and pickup the file from a folder using FTP protocol.
    What is the criteria based on which i need to take this decision?
    And finally, how are the system name & host name details, which we given during 3rd party technical system definition in SLD useful?
    Many Thanks
    Chandra

    Hi Chandra
    Its always preferred to use Business service for communication with systems outside the landscape. As it does not refer to any SLD components and safe to use on internet etc.
    What is the use of using a 3rd Business system instead of using business service in my current situation?
    If you want to use 3rd party system you need to define party based communication and it acts as a party in production environment. You can also create a Standalone sytem in SLD for your use. Standalone technical system mostly refers to standalone Java applications in landscape.
    n both the cases, i can use a file sender CC and pickup the file from a folder using FTP protocol.
    What is the criteria based on which i need to take this decision?
    If your communication is party based and the 3rd party you refer is a party for ERP then it make sense to use a third party communication and use party name as well.By this i mean business wise. Else its always good to use Business service.
    And finally, how are the system name & host name details, which we given during 3rd party technical system definition in SLD useful?
    To use this third party system you need to register products on TS else you will not be able to see any Interface etc while configuring in ID. you need to add all details to it in SLD.
    Thanks

  • What should i use to download videos besides paying for itunes?

    okay well i have limewire and i have downloaded like 3 episodes of family guy and some music videos. i downloaded them in .mov cause the guy at bestbuy said i had to. soo wat site could i download from, or wat other formats can i download. or how do i convert formatts to fit my ipod.

    Yes be smart by mentioning that you seal music via p2p software. But also realize that the only format that you can use to sync videos to the ipod is specified on the technical specs of the 5g ipod here:
    "H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
    MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats"
    Those are the only video formats supported by the 5g ipod.
    I am going to guess you are using windows operatong system so to convert video you will need this software:
    http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/
    get support for this software here
    http://www.pspvideo9.com/forums/index.php?c=8
    this is not apple software so dont ask questions here for this software.
    Well to get other video you could always BUY THEM if you can do that. Hope your smarts get better!

  • Should I use a Rewire or Firewire connection for audio/midi input?

    From Logic which is better?
    I'm leaning towards Rewire since in the past I've had problems with processors over-heating and I don't think Firewire would help with that. Sometimes when I mix with my mouse it seems the midi information doesn't travel through and this why I'm looking for new cabling.
    thanks for help

    From Firewire, Usb and Midi in mixing as a Control-Surface won't make a difference in Mixing!
    It will in Recording but surely not Mixing, what is it you a really trying to do?

  • What email program should I use?

    I have Safari 1.3.2 which I assume is the final upgrade for 10.3. I changed my browser to Firefox because of some of the problems with Safari. I was a long user of Netscape, including their email program. I want to keep Panther as my operating system. Should I use the Safari 1.3.2 for email? Want would you recommend for email, something different?

    Hi again,
    Yes, the Navigator Composer/Mail bundle... it's a good one if you like it. Has a lot of extra's to it. If you want to check out others, have you tried the one that comes with MacOSX? It's simply called Mail. It's the one I use now... it's simple, has some extra's and is all I need. Some like Microsoft Entourage which comes with the new Mac as a trial and is bundled with the Microsoft Office Suite... if you have that bundle. I find it has much more then I want to be a simple program, maybe some office types could use all that stuff, but I don't.
    Camino is just a browser. SeaMonkey is the Mac version of Netscape... it has all the elements of Navigator... composer, mail, browser and with all the same icons... it is just more Mac-Friendly then Navigator can be. This one would be worth a look if you are used to Netscape (since Netscape is now without support and has been acquired by AOL), and SeaMonkey is still going and improving.
    A stand alone mail program called ThunderBird on the Mozilla web-site is also an alternative if you want something different to try out. I have given it a look, but again it has too many bells and elements for my simple use style.
    So, I have grown used to Mail which is a natural for this Mac... works well, simple and yet some bell's to enhance with. But, you, can now give some others a look/feel and see what you think.
    Enjoy

  • 64 bits: why should I use it?

    Just for the sake of discussion: If I have a program offered in 32 and 64 bit modes, why should I use the 64 bit version?
    For example, the well known Videolan Player, aka VLC Media Player, recently updated to version 1.0.2, comes in 32 an 64 bit flavors. When would one version be used in lieu of the other?
    And saying "because it is bigger and hence better" is not true. Even Apple points out in the developer pages about the 64-bit fallacy: in that mode, all data structures duplicate in size and if the hardware remains the same, performance will suffer cause you have to push twice the amount of information.

    I just did a test with VLC Player (version 1.0.2), I played the same video in both 32 bit and 64 bit modes (NOTE: NOT talking about the kernel, but the program). Played it several times in both modes and even alternated between modes. In 64 bit mode it caused one of my processors to spike to 104% usage for the first 20 sec before dropping to 4-5%. In 32 bit mode processor usage remained at 4-5% the entire time.
    Played the same video in Quicktime Player X in both modes and saw no difference (used 5-8% processor usage).
    So to answer the question about when to use one version over the other I would say if one version causes notable problems/issues and the other doesn't than use the one that doesn't. Generally you shouldn't see a noticeable difference except in high-end programs that are crunching massive amounts of data.

  • Which exchange 2013 setup file should I use ?

    I am seeing exchange 2013 RTM setup file for download from microsoft, as well as exchange 2013 CU3 setup file. This is my first exchange 2013 box. which file should I use to install exchange ?
    Anand_N

    Hi,
    For new installs you should usethe most current build, CU3: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41175
    Cumulative Update builds are full Exchange server installers so there is no need to install RTM version and then apply CU.

  • Should we use main method in JCO

    1/
    Should we use main method in JCO.. Connections does not seem to be simple java programes... so why should we use them??? just for the sake of running the programme?
    2/ And the below mentiond programme.. there is nothing called Connect1. Still the that class is created ..
    do not you thik it has to be <b>TutorialConnect1</b> object and constructor,
    import com.sap.mw.jco.*;
    public class TutorialConnect1 extends Object {
       JCO.Client mConnection;
       public Connect1() {
         try {
           // Change the logon information to your own system/user
           mConnection =
              JCO.createClient("001", // SAP client

                "****", // password
                null, // language
                "<hostname>", // application server host name
                "00"); // system number
           mConnection.connect();
           System.out.println(mConnection.getAttributes());
           mConnection.disconnect();
        catch (Exception ex) {
          ex.printStackTrace();
          System.exit(1);
      public static void main (String args[]) {
        Connect1 app = new Connect1();

    Hi
    The main method is used in the learning stages to know how the program is executing.In real time scenarios we do not use the main method.If you use a main method it is just like a stand alone program to know the basics.
    In your program the class name and constructor name is different
    Make sure both are same or otherwise create an object with default constructor given by jvm and then call a method
    Thanks

  • Should I use default Raw or convert to DNG?

    Hello,
    I have olympus SP570UZ and use LR 3. I'm not a professional photographer but do a lot of photography and shoot in raw. My question is should I use the default raw file for import/editing or should i convert to dng? does it effect editing capabilities and degrade the result when i convert to dng?
    I work on laptop and it seems a lot slower in loading default raw files. Will this improve my overall work time and lower load on cpu and space, but my first priority is picture quality?
    Thank you.

    Converting to DNG is really a matter of choice not necessity. If your camera is already supported by Lightroom / Camera Raw then there is little to be gained by converting the images to DNG at the beginning of your workflow. Many who champion DNG will keep their images in the camera vendors raw format until they've completed their edits and only then convert the final image to DNG.
    In answer to other questions. Performance - DNG is not some magic bullet that will increase the performance of your family saloon into that of a Porsche. Space - The lossless compression used by DNG is more efficient than that used by the majority of other raw formats, but only saves space if you trash the originals after conversion. (Note - trashing your original raw files is not something that I would ever recommend let alone suggest.) Quality - There should be no difference in quality between the original raw file and the DNG version.
    FWIW, DNG was originally proposed as standard "capture format" but as time has gone by and few camera vendors jumped on board Adobe's position has changed to "DNG is ideal as an archiving format". The latter is probably the less time consuming and more future proof approach. As mentioned above,it's also the approach adopted by many of those who champion the DNG format.
    No doubt someone else will come along and add their tuppence worth for one or the other, but if previous threads on the same subject are any guide you'll still be left wondering. Try typing your original question into Google and see the mass of info and opinion that already exists. I can hear the sound of Hornets buzzing already.
    Disclosure - I use DNG not raw throughout my workflow. This means that my thumbnails and previews accurately reflect the Adobe rendering in all of the applications "I" use. "I" don't use the camera vendors software (i.e. Canon DPP), so have no issues with the fact that it does not support DNG.
