Should I use a second library / catalog for clip art photos

Hi!
I've used LR for several years for my personal photos - editing & tagging & sorting etc. I've only ever used the one catalogue - hence putting this in the beginners forum.
I also have on my laptop a range of stock photos and clipart.  This is beginning to increase as I do more on blogs/websites etc. and I need to manage it - and be able to find what I need.  I have considered getting picasa, as I didn't want to mess up my personal lightroom catalogues and have millions of unrelated tags, but then I thought about starting a second catalogue specifically for stock pictures.
But I would like to ask some more experienced users their opinions.  Is lightroom viable for cataloguing stock photos (I may do some editing of them, though the primary purpose would be tagging)?  If I start a second catalogue will the tags be completely separate and not impinge on my own photos?  Or there any pros/cons I need to consider?  Would picasa or some other tagging software be better suited (I had heard that picasa also tagged things like colour automatically)?  If I keep all of the stock photos on an external hdd will that impact on my decision making process?
Many thanks for your time!

I use two catalogs but one is only used when on the road. I will add metadata to photos but I never do any development work on the laptop catalog. As soon as I am back home, the first thing I do is export the working catalog on the laptop and import it into my primary catalog on my Mac Pro. The second catalog is only a temporary thing. I had tried maintaining two catalogs at one time using one for my working catalog and a second for my archives but that also became unworkable since I always had to search them both to find what I was looking for. LR only allows one catalog to be open at any point in time so switching back and forth became more than just a little annoying. Now I work out of the one catalog which contains both the working files as well as the archives and the catalog on my laptop is only live when I travel and even that only if I plan to be gone for more than a few days. For your situation I would toss my vote on the side of a single catalog as well. The metadata is a great way to distinguish images coming from other sources making it easy to locate them or distinguish between one of your own images from a stock image. If you want a more visual way, you could use one of the color labels as well. Add the label and then set your preferences to shade the background with the color and you can tell instantly in Grid mode which images are stock by the background color of the cell (I tend to be visual in my thinking). I would still add a keyword such as "stock" or "stock image" though.

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.

My 2011 MBP has begun running slow with frequent 'spinning beach ball' events. I'm running Yosemite and wondered if I should of use the original install disk for a maintenance reinstall. I presume I'd have to download Yosemite again, though I'd be happy just using Snow Leopard again too.
    Thanks for the help.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Should I Use Boot Camp or Parallels for use of a Windows Desktop?

    I am migrating from a PC to a Mac; I want to take advantage of having a Windows desktop to run some apps until i buy Mac equivalent software;
    I have Tiger, but am installing Leopard this weekend;
Should I Use Boot Camp or Parallels for use of a Windows Desktop?
I am tempted by not having to reboot, but i don't want my mac to slow down?
I am a photographer and use Photoshop and other graphics intensive programs.

    Hi,
to achieve full computing power while in Windows you have to use BootCamp and for Photoshop and other apps of that caliber in Windows its the best.
For apps less demanding using Parallels (VMWare Fusion) is sufficient enough and the slight downgrade in speed is negligible.
You should however (if not already done) max out the RAM of your Mac.

  • Why should I use BO BI 4.0 for my existing SAP NetWeaver ?

    Dear Sirs,
Question about BusinessObjects BI 4.0 & SAP Netweaver 7.0.
In my company we use NetWeaver for a year. We have some reports on portal, so we have some analysis via www. It seemed to me that this is enough for us.
Now on the market is available new version of BusinessObjects - version 4.0.
    My question is :
Why should I use BO BI 4.0 for my SAP BW?
What will I gain by implementing BO BI 4.0 in conjunction with SAP BW?
Can I use existing reports on the new platform?
Can you give some links to documents, presentations and notes to answer these questions?
    Best regards,
    Emmo

    Hi Emmo2000,
    Please see my answers below:
Why should I use BO BI 4.0 for my SAP BW?
What will I gain by implementing BO BI 4.0 in conjunction with SAP BW?
Please see this SDN article which covers a lot of the new features of BI4.0 :

Can I use existing reports on the new platform?
There is the ability to integrate BexWeb applications via our BI Launchpad. I'm not sure if this is what you are referring to but the following should clarify:

Can you give some links to documents, presentations and notes to answer these questions?
For detailed information on the BI4.0 suite, I would direct you towards our product documentation:

I hope this is helpful and fully answers your question.

  • Reducing AI size for clip art (wmf or emf) CS3 on Windows

    Hello All -
I was actually in an Adobe workshop last week with an Adobe goddess and she was not able to answer this question - so unfortunately, I do not have much hope. But the last question I asked on this forum was answered so quickly and accurately I thought I would give it a shot!
I am creating clip art for a client who has decided they can only use .wmf or .emf files for their application. My illustrations, when exported to .wmf, are around 3MB. Obviously, for clip art this is much to large, since these files are typically around 7-15 KB.
I have tried numerous ways to reduce my file size drastically, (including merging, saving as older versions, tiff's & png's and reimporting, correcting in photoshop...) and the only way that has produced a small enough file size was to remove any beauty in my illustrations and make them completely flat, solid, colors. At first, the client was pleased with the results, but has now decided they are not pleased and want to be able to use the original illustrations that I provided and still have a small file size.
    Suggestions?

Your client is painting you into an impossibly small corner, and for no reason. Large posters such as you will be producing are printed on expensive inkjet plotters, operated by professional print service bureaus. Those people use professional graphics programs, including Illustrator. They would most likely prefer either native files (ie: Illustrator) or PDFs. Your client is asking for impossibly small EMF files because... well there’s no way to logically finish that sentence. Probably that’s the format they grew up with or that they were told works best with Microsoft Word. Perhaps it did, too, in the 1990s.
Since quality of image is probably the most important factor, anything you do to make smaller size or EMF compatibility a priority will compromise that, probably for no good reason. See if the print shop will accept PDF. See if the client can work with PDF, if the client feels some need to work with the files.

  • Looking for clip art pictures for birthday invitation. What is a good spot for that?

Looking for clip art pictures for Birthday invitations. What is a good spot to find these or how do I acess this on my mac.  New to mac.
    Thanks

Do a search for clip art using your favorite search engine - Google or Bing are good places to start.

  • What should you use a second SSD for?

    Hi
I have a few SSD drives and want to maximise the speed my Mac boots up but also in the apps I use.
One of the drives is a Scratch Disk I use for FCPX.  Should I keep my iTunes Library, Apps, Mail and Photos on a separate SSD to my boot
drive to maximise speed opening app and accessing files.
I did think, by doing this would make a clean install or upgrade in the future a much easier process too.
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

If you don't need to frequently access data in your Home folder, then I would (and I do.) Or you can move folders to a slow drive and put aliases to them on the SSD (this is how I do it.)
How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu. You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed. When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

  • How do I use my second hard drive for storage, not back up?

Hi, I bought a second hard drive to store files (not back-up for my system), but when I moved some files over to drive two and then deleted the same files from drive one, they also deleted from the 2nd drive! Fortunately I could reverse the process and there was no loss, but what now? How do I disconnect the two so I can use the second as storage?
Thanks and happy Easter for those of you who celebrate it. Kate (Porter)

Whilst I normally drag files around, a copy and paste still should have created a replica on the destination drive.
That the second is mounted internally makes my describing it as an external drive inaccurate, but wouldn't cause the problem.
So that still leaves the scant possibility that the original source is itself an alias.
Was the copy and paste done in a Finder window or was it done via some other application's window?
I look forward to an update on this unusual event.

  • Should I use a separate JAVA instance for ADS

My customer has Enterprise portal and R/3 installed already.  Now they want ADS installed.  Would it be best to install a new JAVA instance for ADS or should I use the existing JAVA instance that is installed for the portal?  I think the customer is preferring to use a separate instance so nothing already installed breaks.  Also, if I do use a separate JAVA instance, should I connect to the portal through SLD?
    Thanks,
    Peggy

    Hello,
Installation of new java instance for ADS (or) using the one available inthe portal java instance depends on the following factors:-
    1) How much extra load can the existing java instance handle
    2) What is the user case and expected load for ADS in the customer landscape?
    3) Whether ADS will be used exclusively for portal ?
Following link may give you a better idea of whether to use ADS within applicaiton portal (or) use standalone ADS

  • Should I use a shared library?

    Hi,
This is the setup. I am working in two different applications, one to be compiled for desktop use (AIR) and one to be compiled for the web. They are part of the same project and use the same visual components, but they are completely different apps. When a visual component is changed in one application then it should also change in the other one.
Is this a good situation to use a shared library fla?
I am new to the concept of shared libraries and I am considering the options.
On one had I would not have to update 2 applications everytime I change something, on the other, I would always have to recompile the library folder when I do the smallest changes to a component.
Could you give me your opinion in this?
    Regards,
    Ana G. Pino

    Thanks for answering.
I have been trying to look for the  best set up and I am not a fan of RSLs either. Do you have a recommendation of another way that I could set this up? Could you tell me your reasons for not liking RSL? And if you have worked with them any advice on how to approach them?
I know... too many questions, but I am really lost.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Ana

  • Is the 2010 answer about firesheep encryption boxes still valid? I'm using an online library catalog; no sign-in needed. I didn't have

I work at an extension campus for a community college and have never had this problem before when searching the college's library catalog. Every time I click to open a book record or see the next page in a list of books, this Security Warning box appears. That is a lot of unnecessary steps to delete this box every time.
joanie 11/16/10 6:02am is the answer I looked at for my problem.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firesheep
Firesheep was developed to display the possibility of a website having a secure login shift to a non-encrypted page and exposing the user to session hijacking vulnerabilities. IOW, using HTTPS for the login and then sending the user to regular HTTP pages afterwards
If you're not logging in to that website, I don't understand why Firesheep would raise an alert. IMO, that extension isn't needed any longer - the webmasters who care about their users would have fixed their website years ago, and the webmasters who don't care and haven't fixed it yet won't do anything at this late date. Nothing the user can do about websites that raise an alert like that, except to "know" to avoid those websites in the future.
You may want to ask your school's IT department about why you are getting that alert, and see what they say about it.

  • What tools should I use to create a UI for an AEGP plugin for CS6 on a Mac

I see that for CC the suggested UI tool is HTML5, but what should be used for developing a plugin that must also run in CS6 on a Mac?

For CS6, you can create panels using ScriptUI, to add a custom panel to the Window menu.
A script like this would be installed here: ..\Adobe After Effects CS6\Support Files\Scripts\ScriptUI Panels\
For ScriptUI, there is some documentation in the JavaScript Tools Guide, accessible from the ExtendScript Toolkit application > Help > JavaScript Tools Guide; and also here - http://www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/scriptui.html

I am making a graphic for an HD (1920x1080px) in Photoshop and I wanted to know which dpi Should I use? 72dpi?100dpi?300dpi?
I dont want this to bee seen bad in a big screen...=S
    Thanks in Advance,

PPI only applies to print. Don't set it to anything.
Photoshop defaults to 72 but the number is irrelevant for screen design.

  • Should I use Camera Raw 5.0 for JPEG photo editing?

    Hello,
I have Camera Raw 5.0 through Bridge CS4 and I shoot photos on my Nikon D40X in JPEG.  Should I NOT be using Camera Raw to edit my non-RAW photos?  Is it degrading my images?  I noticed when I did some editing and saved the photo, the new photo size was about 25% of the original JPEG size.
    Thanks in advance!!

To tell you the truth, you might be better off just shooting RAW in the first place... but I'm surprised by your decrease in size... I can only echo the suggestion to check the JPEG quality box and the file format used.  You didn't crop it to some different resolution, did you?
PS: I'm getting into photo editing pen tablets.  You might try one some time for editing.
